15 priorities for wind-waves research: An Australian perspective

Abstract: The Australian marine research, industry, and stakeholder community has recently undertaken an extensive collaborative process to identify the highest national priorities for wind-waves research. This was undertaken under the auspices of the Forum for Operational Oceanography Surface Waves Working Group. The main steps in the process were first, soliciting possible research questions from the community via an online survey second, reviewing the questions at a face-to-face workshop and third, online ranking of the research questions by in iduals. This process resulted in 15 identified priorities, covering research activities and the development of infrastructure. The top five priorities are 1) enhanced and updated nearshore and coastal bathymetry 2) improved understanding of extreme sea states 3) maintain and enhance the in situ buoy network 4) improved data access and sharing and 5) ensemble and probabilistic wave modeling and forecasting. In this paper, each of the 15 priorities is discussed in detail, providing insight into why each priority is important, and the current state of the art, both nationally and internationally, where relevant. While this process has been driven by Australian needs, it is likely that the results will be relevant to other marine-focused nations.

Extreme water levels, waves and coastal impacts during a severe tropical cyclone in northeastern Australia

Abstract: Abstract. Severe tropical cyclone (TC) Debbie made landfall on the northern Queensland coast of Australia on 27 March 2017 after crossing the Great Barrier Reef as a slow-moving Category 4 system. Groups from industry, government and academia collected coastal hazard and impact data before, during and after the event and shared these data to produce a holistic picture of TC Debbie at the coast. Results showed the still water level exceeded the highest astronomical tide by almost a metre. Waves added a further 16 % to water levels along the open coast, and were probably unprecedented for this area since monitoring began. In most places, coastal barriers were not breached and as a result there was net offshore sand transport. If landfall had occurred 2 h earlier with the high tide, widespread inundation and overwash would have ensued. This paper provides a case study of effective cross-sector data sharing in a natural hazard context. It advocates for a shared information platform for coastal extremes in Australia to help improve the understanding and prediction of TC-related coastal hazards in the future.

Climate windows for Polynesian voyaging to New Zealand and Easter Island

Abstract: South Pacific migration routes used in East Polynesian colonization (A.D. 800−1500) have been assumed to be commonly upwind, when based on an understanding of modern climate patterns. Instead, our novel paleowind field reconstructions at bidecadal resolution show that migration routes lay downwind from East Polynesia during known times of initial colonization of New Zealand and Easter Island. This finding is significant in showing that a windward seafaring capacity in Polynesian colonization voyaging was not essential, and that long-term temporal variation in sailing conditions due to the expansion of the tropics was important in shaping colonization histories. The paleoclimate reconstruction broadens colonization possibilities, and the method represents a new, globally applicable approach to understanding patterning in prehistoric maritime migration.

Borehole temperatures reveal a changed energy budget at Mill Island, East Antarctica, over recent decades

Abstract: Abstract. A borehole temperature record from the Mill Island (East Antarctica) icecap reveals a large surface warming signal manifested as a 0.75 K temperature difference over the approximate 100 m depth in the zone of zero annual litude below the seasonally varying zone. The temperature profile shows a break in gradient around 49 m depth, which we model with inverse numerical simulations, indicating that surface warming started around the austral summer of 1980/81 AD ±5 yr. This warming of approximately 0.37 K per decade is consistent with trends seen in both instrumental and other reconstructions for Antarctica and, therefore, suggests that regional- rather than local-scale processes are largely responsible. Alteration of the surface energy budget arising from changes in radiation balances due to local cloud, the amount of liquid deposition and local air temperatures associated with altered air/sea exchanges also potentially plays a role at this location due to the proximity of the Shackleton Ice Shelf and sea-ice zone.

Holocene deglaciation, sea-level change, and the emergence of the Windmill Islands, Budd Coast, Antarctica

Abstract: A Holocene deglaciation sequence for the Windmill Islands was determined from the 14 C age of raised marine shorelines, lakebottom sediments, and Adelie penguin remains found in abandoned rookeries. A north-south gradient in the elevation of the upper marine limit was observed, with the highest marine limit (31-32 m) observed on Browning Peninsula and Hull Island at the southern edge of the islands. Correspondingly, the southern islands were found to have been deglaciated by 8000 (corr.) yr B.P. while the northern islands were deglaciated by 5500 (corr.) yr B.P. Isostatic uplift rates were calculated as 0.5 to 0.6 m/100 yr, with an estimated total uplift of around 53 m which indicates late Pleistocene ice sheet thicknesses of 200 and 400 m over the islands and adjacent Petersen Bank, respectively. The margin of the Late Pleistocene grounded ice sheet extended an estimated 8-15 km offshore which coincides with the location of the 200 m isobath.

Basal ice accretion and debris entrainment within the coastal ice margin, Law Dome, Antarctica

Abstract: Basal ice stratigraphy in coastal ice cliffs at the Law Dome margin has revealed the basal accretion of clean and debris-bearing ice, marine congelation ice and granular marine ice inland of the margin. Co-isotopic analysis of δ 18 O and δD isotopes together with solute chemistry were applied to determine the modes of accretion and debris entrainment. The marine congelation ice and the granular marine ice were formed from the basal freezing of desalinated sea water and the episodic mixture of basal meltwater and sea water, respectively. Two different debris-entrainment mechanisms were identified. Debris-band ice with debris concentrations of 6.3–33% (by volume) was formed from proglacial raised beach and shallow marine sediment incorporated by an over-riding advance of the margin. Two other debris-bearing ice types, dispersed debris-poor ice with debris concentrations & .3% (by volume) and laminated debris ice with debris concentrations 0.9–1.9% (by volume) were accreted further inland from the margin by basal regelation processes associated with the Robin (1976) heat-pump effect.

A glaciochemical study of the 120 m ice core from Mill Island, East Antarctica

Abstract: Abstract. A 120 m ice core was drilled on Mill Island, East Antarctica (65°30′ S, 100°40′ E) during the 2009/2010 Australian Antarctic field season. Contiguous discrete 5 cm s les were measured for hydrogen peroxide, water stable isotopes, and trace ion chemistry. The ice core was annually dated using a combination of chemical species and water stable isotopes. The Mill Island ice core preserves a climate record covering 97 years from 1913 to 2009 CE, with a mean snow accumulation of 1.35 m (ice-equivalent) per year (mIE yr−1). This northernmost East Antarctic coastal ice core site displays trace ion concentrations that are generally higher than other Antarctic ice core sites (e.g. mean sodium levels were 254 µEq L−1). The trace ion record at Mill Island is characterised by a unique and complex chemistry record with three distinct regimes identified. The trace ion record in regime A displays clear seasonality from 2000 to 2009 CE regime B displays elevated concentrations with no seasonality from 1934 to 2000 CE and regime C displays relatively low concentrations with seasonality from 1913 to 1934 CE. Sea salts were compared with instrumental data, including atmospheric models and satellite-derived sea-ice concentration, to investigate influences on the Mill Island ice core record. The mean annual sea salt record does not correlate with wind speed. Instead, sea-ice concentration to the east of Mill Island likely influences the annual mean sea salt record. A mechanism involving formation of frost flowers on sea ice is proposed to explain the extremely high sea salt concentration. The Mill Island ice core records are unexpectedly complex, with strong modulation of the trace chemistry on long timescales.

Insignificant change in antarctic snowfall since the international geophysical year

Abstract: Antarctic snowfall exhibits substantial variability over a range of time scales, with consequent impacts on global sea level and the mass balance of the ice sheets. To assess how snowfall has affected the thickness of the ice sheets in Antarctica and to provide an extended perspective, we derived a 50-year time series of snowfall accumulation over the continent by combining model simulations and observations primarily from ice cores. There has been no statistically significant change in snowfall since the 1950s, indicating that Antarctic precipitation is not mitigating global sea level rise as expected, despite recent winter warming of the overlying atmosphere.

Abstract: Abstract. Recent advances in proxy-model data assimilation have made feasible the development of proxy-based reanalyses. Proxy-based reanalyses aim to make optimum use of both proxy and model data while presenting paleoclimate information in an accessible format – they will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the future of paleoclimate research. In the Paleoclimate Reanalysis Project (PaleoR) we use "off-line" data assimilation to constrain the CESM1 (CAM5) Last Millennial Ensemble (LME) simulation with a globally distributed multivariate proxy dataset, producing a decadal resolution reanalysis of the past millennium. Discrete time periods are "reconstructed" by using anomalous (±0.5σ) proxy climate signals to select an ensemble of climate state analogues from the LME. Prior to assimilation the LME simulates internal variability that is temporally inconsistent with information from the proxy archive. After assimilation the LME is highly correlated to almost all included proxy data, and dynamical relationships between modelled variables are preserved thus providing a "real-world" view of climate system evolution during the past millennium. Unlike traditional regression based approaches to paleoclimatology, PaleoR is unaffected by temporal variations in teleconnection patterns. Indices representing major modes of global ocean–atmosphere climate variability can be calculated directly from PaleoR spatial fields. PaleoR derived ENSO, SAM, and NAO indices are consistent with observations and published multiproxy reconstructions. The computational efficiency of "off-line" data assimilation allows easy incorporation and evaluation of new proxy data, and experimentation with different setups and model simulations. Nourishment practices on Australian sandy beaches

Abstract: It is predicted that the coastal zone will be among the environments worst affected by projected climate change. Projected losses in beach area will negatively impact on coastal infrastructure and continued recreational use of beaches. Beach nourishment practices such as artificial nourishment, replenishment and scraping are increasingly used to combat beach erosion but the extent and scale of projects is poorly documented in large areas of the world. Through a survey of beach managers of Local Government Areas and a comprehensive search of peer reviewed and grey literature, we assessed the extent of nourishment practices in Australia. The study identified 130 beaches in Australia that were subject to nourishment practices between 2001 and 2011. Compared to projects elsewhere, most Australian projects were small in scale but frequent. Exceptions were nine bypass projects which utilised large volumes of sediment. Most artificial nourishment, replenishment and beach scraping occurred in highly urbanised areas and were most frequently initiated in spring during periods favourable to accretion and outside of the summer season of peak beach use. Projects were generally a response to extreme weather events, and utilised sand from the same coastal compartment as the site of erosion. Management was planned on a regional scale by Local Government Authorities, with little monitoring of efficacy or biological impact. As rising sea levels and growing coastal populations continue to put pressure on beaches a more integrated approach to management is required, that documents the extent of projects in a central repository, and mandates physical and biological monitoring to help ensure the engineering is sustainable and effective at meeting goals.

The International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE): an overview

Abstract: From its original formulation in 1990 the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) has had as its primary aim the collection and interpretation of a continent-wide array of environmental parameters assembled through the coordinated efforts of scientists from several nations. ITASE offers the ground-based opportunities of traditional-style traverse travel coupled with the modern technology of GPS, crevasse detecting radar, satellite communications and multidisciplinary research. By operating predominantly in the mode of an oversnow traverse, ITASE offers scientists the opportunity to experience the dynamic range of the Antarctic environment. ITASE also offers an important interactive venue for research similar to that afforded by oceanographic research vessels and large polar field c s, without the cost of the former or the lack of mobility of the latter. More importantly, the combination of disciplines represented by ITASE provides a unique, multidimensional (space and time) view of the ice sheet and its history. ITASE has now collected 000km of snow radar, recovered more than 240 firn/ice cores (total length 7000 m), remotely penetrated to ~4000m into the ice sheet, and s led the atmosphere to heights of km.

Characterizing black carbon in rain and ice cores using coupled tangential flow filtration and transmission electron microscopy

Abstract: Abstract. Antarctic ice cores have been used to study the history of black carbon (BC), but little is known with regards to the physical and chemical characteristics of these particles in the remote atmosphere. Characterization remains limited by ultra-trace concentrations in ice core s les and the lack of adequate methods to isolate the particles unaltered from the melt water. To investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of these particles, we have developed a tangential flow filtration (TFF) method combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Tests using ultrapure water and polystyrene latex particle standards resulted in excellent blanks and significant particle recovery. This approach has been applied to melt water from Antarctic ice cores as well as tropical rain from Darwin, Australia with successful results: TEM analysis revealed a variety of BC particle morphologies, insoluble coatings, and the attachment of BC to mineral dust particles. The TFF-based concentration of these particles has proven to give excellent results for TEM studies of BC particles in Antarctic ice cores and can be used for future studies of insoluble aerosols in rainwater and ice core s les.

Simulation of the net snow accumulation along the Wilkes Land transect, Antarctica, with a regional climate model

Abstract: Regional climate modelling in conjunction with accumulation measurements collected on Antarctic traverses of the International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ITASE) is presented as a tool for extending the spatial coverage of field measurements. The modelling of part of East Antarctica spanned the 7 year epoch 1980–86 where data covering the same period are available. The agreement between simulation and observation is improved when a parameterization of the snow surface redistribution processes, such as wind erosion, is included in the regional climate model. The modelled spatial distribution of the net snow mass transported in the boundary layer over coastal East Antarctica indicates that this mass is a significant component of the surface mass balance.

Low-resolution Australasian palaeoclimate records of the last 2000 years

Abstract: Abstract. Non-annually resolved palaeoclimate records in the Australasian region were compiled to facilitate investigations of decadal to centennial climate variability over the past 2000 years. A total of 675 lake and wetland, geomorphic, marine, and speleothem records were identified. The majority of records are located near population centres in southeast Australia, in New Zealand, and across the maritime continent, and there are few records from the arid regions of central and western Australia. Each record was assessed against a set of a priori criteria based on temporal resolution, record length, dating methods, and confidence in the proxy–climate relationship over the Common Era. A subset of 22 records met the criteria and were endorsed for subsequent analyses. Chronological uncertainty was the primary reason why records did not meet the selection criteria. New chronologies based on Bayesian techniques were constructed for the high-quality subset to ensure a consistent approach to age modelling and quantification of age uncertainties. The primary reasons for differences between published and reconstructed age–depth models were the consideration of the non-singular distribution of ages in calibrated 14C dates and the use of estimated autocorrelation between s led depths as a constraint for changes in accumulation rate. Existing proxies and reconstruction techniques that successfully capture climate variability in the region show potential to address spatial gaps and expand the range of climate variables covering the last 2000 years in the Australasian region. Future palaeoclimate research and records in Australasia could be greatly improved through three main actions: (i) greater data availability through the public archiving of published records (ii) thorough characterisation of proxy–climate relationships through site monitoring and climate sensitivity tests and (iii) improvement of chronologies through core-top dating, inclusion of tephra layers where possible, and increased date density during the Common Era.

The nature and origin of a jokulhlaup near Casey Station, Antarctica

Abstract: A jökulhlaup event of 6 months duration occurred near Casey Station, Law Dome, Antarctica, in late March (austral autumn) 1985. This was followed by sporadic outbursts during the austral autumn and winter of 1986. The event is the first recorded outburst of water from beneath a cold ice-cap terminus on Law Dome and, to the author’s knowledge, in Antarctica. From the results of oxygen-isotope and solute analysis, the water was found to have originated as basal melt water. It contained a high total solute load with a dominant enrichment in alkalis, indicting that it had been squeezed through subglacial sediments for an extensive time period. Evidence from the subglacial topography, basal ice exposures, and the sedimentology of nearby supraglacial moraines supports the presence of an ice-marginal subglacial water reservoir as the jökulhlaup source.

Large-scale influences on the evolution of winter subtropical maritime cyclones affecting Australia's east coast

Abstract: Subtropical maritime low pressure systems frequently impact Australia’s eastern seaboard. Closed circulation lows in the Tasman Sea region are termed East Coast Cyclones (ECC) they can evolve in a range of climatic environments and have proven most destructive during the late autumn–winter period. Using criteria based on pressure gradients, inferred wind field, and duration, an objectively determined database of ECC occurrences is established to explore large-scale influences on ECC evolution. Subclassification based on evolutionary trajectory reveals two dominant storm types during late autumn–winter: easterly trough lows (ETL) and southern secondary lows (SSL). Synoptic composites are used to investigate the climatological evolution of each storm type. ETL cyclogenesis occurs along the eastern seaboard at the confluence of warm moist subtropical easterlies and cool air over the continent that is advected from higher latitudes. SSL develop when a cold extratropical cyclone moves equatorward and interacts with warm moist conditions in the Tasman Sea. At seasonal time scales, a complex interplay of tropical and extratropical influences contributes to high-frequency storm seasons. ETL are more frequent during neutral or positive phases of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, cool sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the tropical Indian Ocean, and neutral to positive southern annular mode phases. SSL are more frequent during years with warm SSTAs in the eastern Indian Ocean, warm SSTAs in the western Pacific, and high-latitude blocking.

Abstract: Snow accumulation and surface microrelief distributions, together with the surface katabatic wind pattern and elevation profiles, are presented for the eastern Wilkes Land katabatic wind zone. The broad-scale net accumulation distribution displays a strong negative correlation with elevation but on the mesoscale there are significant variations with respect to the elevation profile. The accumulation distribution was found to be dependent on slope aspect. Higher accumulation rates were observed on the north-east (windward) slope than those on the north-west (leeward) slope for the elevation range of 1870 m–2230 m. These higher accumulation rates are associated with the occurrence of longitudinal dunes deposited by precipitation, during synoptic events. The dependence of the accumulation distribution on aspect implies that synoptic and orographic processes are the major control on the depositional regime, and that maritime synoptic systems regularly penetrate eastern Wilkes Land to at least 2300 m elevation.

Abstract: The late Quaternary glacial history of the Amery Oasis, and Prince Charles Mountains is of significant interest because about 10% of the total modern Antarctic ice outflow is discharged via the adjacent Lambert Glacier system. A glacial thrust moraine sequence deposited along the northern shoreline of Radok Lake between 20–10 ka bp , overlies a layer of thin, aragonite crusts which provide important constraints on the glacial history of the Amery Oasis. The modern Radok Lake is fed by the terminal meltwaters of the alpine Battye Glacier. The aragonite crusts were deposited in shallow water of ancestral Radok Lake 53 ka bp , during the A3 warm event in Isotope Stage 3. Oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) analysis of the last glacial-age aragonite crusts indicates that they precipitated from freshwater with a δ 18 O SMOW composition of -36%, which is 8% more depleted than the present water (-28%) in Radok Lake. A regional oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) and elevation relationship for snow is used to determine the source of meltwater and glacial ice in Radok Lake during the A3 warm event. This relationship indicates that Radok Lake received meltwater from the confluence of both Battye Glacier ice and an expansion of grounded western Lambert Glacier ice in the Amery embayment.

Abstract: Antarctic Ice Sheet elevation changes, which are used to estimate changes in the mass of the interior regions, are caused by variations in the depth of the firn layer. We quantified the effects of temperature and accumulation variability on firn layer thickness by simulating the 1980–2004 Antarctic firn depth variability. For most of Antarctica, the magnitudes of firn depth changes were comparable to those of observed ice sheet elevation changes. The current satellite observational period (∼15 years) is too short to neglect these fluctuations in firn depth when computing recent ice sheet mass changes. The amount of surface lowering in the Amundsen Sea Embayment revealed by satellite radar altimetry (1995–2003) was increased by including firn depth fluctuations, while a large area of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet slowly grew as a result of increased accumulation.

Back to the Future: Using Long-Term Observational and Paleo-Proxy Reconstructions to Improve Model Projections of Antarctic Climate

Abstract: Quantitative estimates of future Antarctic climate change are derived from numerical global climate models. Evaluation of the reliability of climate model projections involves many lines of evidence on past performance combined with knowledge of the processes that need to be represented. Routine model evaluation is mainly based on the modern observational period, which started with the establishment of a network of Antarctic weather stations in 1957/58. This period is too short to evaluate many fundamental aspects of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean climate system, such as decadal-to-century time-scale climate variability and trends. To help address this gap, we present a new evaluation of potential ways in which long-term observational and paleo-proxy reconstructions may be used, with a particular focus on improving projections. A wide range of data sources and time periods is included, ranging from ship observations of the early 20th century to ice core records spanning hundreds to hundreds of thousands of years to sediment records dating back 34 million years. We conclude that paleo-proxy records and long-term observational datasets are an underused resource in terms of strategies for improving Antarctic climate projections for the 21st century and beyond. We identify priorities and suggest next steps to addressing this.

Abstract: Submerged paloeshorelines preserved on the continental shelf indicate the depths of the most frequent (modal) low sea-levels within the glacial stages of the Late Quaternary. Here we have determined the south-east Australian shelf configuration when sea level was 40 m and 60 m below present-day sea-level (depths of the most persistent paleoshorelines within the last 120 ka), and we resolve the wave climate variations influencing the sediment transport pathways over this period. We present evidence demonstrating that the combination of shelf morphological evolution, changes in sea-level and variations in wave climate is responsible for latitudinal changes in sediment transport and deposition during the interglacial states. The paleoshoreline and shelf evolution is key to understanding the distribution of present-day shelf sand deposits and the contemporary sand budget response to future wave climate changes.

Abstract: In spring 2014, thousands of green algal balls were washed up at Dee Why Beach, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Reports of algal balls are uncommon in marine systems, and mass strandings on beaches are even more rare, sparking both public and scientific interest. We identified the algal masses as Chaetomorpha linum by using light microscopy and DNA sequencing. We characterize the size and composition of the balls from Dee Why Beach and compare them to previous records of marine algal balls. We describe the environmental conditions that could explain their appearance, given the ecophysiology of C. linum .

Abstract: The Holocene sea-level high stand or “marine limit” in Wilkes Land, East Antarctica, reached ∼30 m above present sea level at a few dispersed sites. The most detailed marine limit data have been recorded for the Windmill Islands and Budd Coast at the margin of the Law Dome ice cap, a dome of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). Relative sea-level lowering of 30 m and the associated emergence of the Windmill Islands have occurred since 6900 14 C (corr.) yr B.P. Numerical modeling of the Earth's rheology is used to determine the glacio-isostatic component of the observed relative sea-level lowering. Glaciological evidence suggests that most of EAIS thickening occurred around its margin, with expansion onto the continental shelf. Consequently, a regional ice history for the last glacial maximum (LGM) was applied in the glacio-isostatic modeling to test whether the observed relative sea-level lowering was primarily produced by regional ice-sheet changes. The results of the modeling indicate that the postglacial (13,000 to 8000 14 C yr B.P) removal of an ice load of between 770 and 1000 m from around the margin of the Law Dome and adjacent EAIS have produced the observed relative sea-level lowering. Such an additional ice load would have been associated with a 40- to 65-km expansion of the Law Dome to near the continental shelf break, together with a few hundred meters of ice thickening on the adjoining coastal slope of the EAIS up to 2000 m elevation. Whereas the observed changes in relative sea level are shown to be strongly influenced by regional ice sheet changes, the glacio-isostatic response at the Windmill Islands results from a combination of regional and to a lesser extent, Antarctic-wide effects. The correspondence between the Holocene relative sea-level lowering interpreted at the margin of the Law Dome and the lowering interpreted along the remainder of the Wilkes Land and Oates Land coasts (105°–160° E) suggests that a similar ice load of up to 1000 m existed along the EAIS margin between Wilkes Land and Oates Land.

Snow-accumulation variability from seasonal surface observations and firn-core stratigraphy, eastern Wilkes Land, Antarctica

Abstract: Annual accumulation records were derived from two firn cores drilled at GD03 (69° 00’S, 115° 30’E, 1835m) and GD15 (69° 00’S, 130° 48’E, 2155m), which are separated by 750 km along the 2000 m contour in eastern Wilkes Land. The accumulation records, spanning the period 1930–85, show that annual accumulation has increased by 25% from 1960 to 1985, resulting in the highest accumulation rates in the 55 year records. Annual accumulation layers were identified in the firn cores using a firn-stratigraphic model (based on the observed characteristics and variability of the seasonal snow-surface layer) together with seasonal oxygen-isotope ratios. The accumulation records support other evidence for a similar recent increase across Antarctica. The greater increase over the long-term mean for 1930–85 in eastern Wilkes Land was observed at GD15 which is located on a northeast aspect slope near Terre Adèlie. It is suggested that the increase is the result of changes in the general atmospheric circulation pattern which have produced a higher annual frequency of precipitation events.
