Abstract: This paper considers the question of designing a fully image-based visual servo control for a class of dynamic systems. The work is motivated by the ongoing development of image-based visual servo control of small aerial robotic vehicles. The kinematics and dynamics of a rigid-body dynamical system (such as a vehicle airframe) maneuvering over a flat target plane with observable features are expressed in terms of an un-normalized spherical centroid and an optic flow measurement. The image-plane dynamics with respect to force input are dependent on the height of the camera above the target plane. This dependence is compensated by introducing virtual height dynamics and adaptive estimation in the proposed control. A fully nonlinear adaptive control design is provided that ensures asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system for all feasible initial conditions. The choice of control gains is based on an analysis of the asymptotic dynamics of the system. Results from a realistic simulation are presented that demonstrate the performance of the closed-loop system. To the author’s knowledge, this paper documents the first time that an image-based visual servo control has been proposed for a dynamic system using vision measurement for both position and velocity.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a simple non-linear observer for attitude estimation based only on output from a typical inertial measurement unit (IMU) and dynamic pressure sensor embarked on a low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle. In particular, we aim to provide a good quality attitude estimate in the absence of global positioning system (GPS) ground truth and with potential low-frequency bias and high-frequency noise in the IMU sensor measurements. In addition, the case where the IMU only provides gyrometer and accelerometer outputs is considered that is, there is no magnetometer output or it cannot be used due to local magnetic disturbances such as are common on a vehicle with electric motors. The proposed observer uses a simple centripetal force model (based on gyrometer and dynamic pressure measurements), augmented by a first-order dynamic model for angle of attack, to estimate non-inertial components of the acceleration. This estimate is used to correct the accelerometer output to provide a low-frequency estimate of the gravitational direction. This inertial direction, along with the gyrometer output, is then used to drive a fully non-linear attitude observer posed on the orthogonal group of rotation matrices SO(3). The observer is augmented with an integral state that ensures compensation of gyrometer bias. The resulting observer is simple to implement and fully non-linear. Experimental results are provided on a real-world data set and the performance of the filter is evaluated against the output from a full GPS/inertial navigation system (INS) that was available for the data set.

Abstract: In 1992, the eastern Canadian gillnet fisheries for northern cod and Atlantic salmon were largely closed. These large-scale fishery closures resulted in the removal of tens of thousands of gillnets known to inflict high levels of seabird mortality. We used this unprecedented opportunity to test the effects of gillnet removal on seabird populations. Consistent with predictions, we show that the breeding populations of ers (auks, gannets susceptible to gillnet bycatch) have increased from pre-closure levels, whereas the populations of scavenging surface-feeders (gulls low vulnerability to gillnet bycatch but susceptible to removal of fisheries discards) have decreased. Using the most complete series of seabird census data for the species most vulnerable to bycatch, we demonstrate a positive population response of common murres to reduction in gillnet fishing within its foraging range. These findings support the widespread but seldom documented contention that fisheries bycatch negatively impacts populations of non-target large vertebrates.

Abstract: Platelet inhibition is critical in reducing both short- and long-term atherothrombotic risks after acute myocardial infarction (MI), especially among patients managed with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Currently available antiplatelet medications, including adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor inhibitors, have demonstrated variability in efficacy and safety in clinical trials, yet few studies have examined contemporary "real-world" approaches to platelet inhibition and associated outcomes. TRANSLATE-ACS is a prospective observational study that will track up to 17,000 MI patients managed with PCI, from the inhospital to outpatient settings for up to 12 months postdischarge to provide a comprehensive picture of current treatment patterns and outcomes in routine clinical practice. TRANSLATE-ACS exemplifies a collaborative study design that efficiently builds upon a well-established PCI registry platform, and yet, through a systematic telephone interview follow-up process, provides important longitudinal clinical and economic follow-up capacity through 15 months after initial MI hospitalization. Furthermore, TRANSLATE-ACS incorporates a hospital-level, clustered, randomized substudy to investigate the impact of point-of-care platelet inhibition testing on subsequent patient management. Finally, TRANSLATE-ACS provides feedback through quarterly reports to participating sites on their care practices benchmarked to peer performance to support and promote longitudinal quality of cardiovascular care delivery. TRANSLATE-ACS not only addresses important clinical and scientific questions but also includes pioneering design features that will assist in the evolution of clinical registries.

Abstract: This paper introduces a port-Hamiltonian framework for the design of image-based visual servo control for dynamic mechanical systems. The approach taken introduces the concept of an image effort and provides an interpretation of energy exchange between the dynamics of the physical system and virtual potentials or ‘image Hamiltonians’ posed in the image space. The port-Hamiltonian framework leads to an elegant algorithm to estimate unknown image depth on-line even when the translational velocity of the camera is not measured.

Abstract: High quality research supervision is crucial for PhD training, yet it continues to pose challenges globally with important contextual factors impacting the quality of supervision. This article reports on responses to these challenges by a multi-institutional sub-Saharan Africa initiative (CARTA) at institutional, faculty and PhD fellow levels. The article describes the pedagogical approaches and structural mechanisms used to enhance supervision among supervisors of CARTA fellows. These include residential training for supervisors, and supervision contracts between primary supervisors and PhD fellows. The authors reflect on the processes and experiences of improving PhD supervision, and suggest research questions that CARTA and other training programmes could pursue in relation to PhD supervision in Africa and other lower- and middle-income countries.
