Substantial work has already been undertaken to address this challenge over the past 10 years. Notably, recent developments have seen the increased adoption of some grain based alternatives being used by the aquaculture feed manufacturing industries. Lupin kernel meal use by this sector in particular is a prominent success story.
As the aquaculture feed industries begin to increase their use of alternative protein resources, such as lupin kernel meals, it becomes increasingly important to develop quality assurance (QA) assessment criteria for specific feed ingredients. The nature of these criteria will vary depending on the end use of the product. An improved understanding of the nutritional value and functional properties of the ingredients is also required to maximize the use of these ingredients by these industries and to begin the QA criteria development process.
Presently the extruded fin-fish feed sector (primarily salmonid feeds) is the largest aquaculture user of value-added grain products in Australia. However, it is apparent that further development of market confidence, through resolution of some of the nutritional value assessment and processing issues, is required for some additional aquaculture sectors (e.g. prawns) to encourage routine use of these products and work addressing these issues is planned in this proposal.
Furthermore, exploration of new product possibilities has already begun in the GRDC project with the development of a series of very promising lupin protein concentrates. However, further evaluation of the potential and constraints for the use of these new and innovative products within aquaculture feeds is needed and additional evaluation in Atlantic salmon and prawns is required.
Objectives: 1. To determine the nutritional value of selected grain products, developed as part of the linked CLIMA-GRDC project, when included in feeds for Black tiger prawns and Atlantic salmon. 2. To evaluate any potential nutritional limitations of the grain products in aquaculture feeds. 3. To provide grain producers, grain processors, aquaculture feed manufacturers and the prawn and salmon aquaculture industries with information about the nutritional characteristics and quality assurance criteria of grain products so that they can be marketed and used with confidence in aquaculture feed formulations. The specific issues that need addressing are: 1. The current wild caught abalone product being supplied to the trial restaurants of the program is not always presented to support the premium positioning. There appear to be issues with current processes and packaging that affect the product quality that have been seen by the project team during market reviews in China. Inconsistency in product quality heightens regulatory and customer scrutiny of quality and safety parameters. - The project will provide technical expertise and experimental support to assist current suppliers in optimising raw materials, labour, equipment and packaging and to develop a quality criteria system to supply product that meets the premium positioning in the current project.
2. There is currently a low level of engagement between the importers and the end user and consumer (restaurants and their customers). As the current project builds customer relationships, we have the opportunity to work closely with them to: - supply the technical requirements to ensure that authentic, safe quality products (current and new) are available through the direct supply channel to China. - develop new products variants based on direct end user feedback on what are required for the market. Development of new products and a market for them will help remove the price volatility and supply issues associated with a mainly live market and overcome one of the barriers to having Australian wild caught abalone on premium restaurant menus.

The existing aquaculture planning system delivers social licence by including the community in the process that examines the pros and cons of development in their region. Despite this, future opportunities for linkages and collaborative partnerships between industry and the community are less well understood.
Critical to building and maintaining a “social license to operate” are robust and collaborative partnerships between industry and the communities in which it operates. Such partnerships need to be structured to allow meaningful dialogue aimed at increasing the positive impacts of aquaculture development to the community as a whole, balanced against the potential costs.
Community perceptions of aquaculture vary widely. The challenge for planners and the industry is to understand regional perceptions in order to develop policies and approaches that respond to community concerns, improve community understandings and bolster the recognition and acceptance of this sector as a valuable community member.
Specifically, industry and policy makers need to understand the social and economic profiles of specific regions as well as community perceptions of the industry, as the foundation for designing a community engagement strategy that will: • establish a sound platform of social understandings and values from which the industry can develop its business case, and • maximise the benefit communities derive from sustainable aquaculture development.
This project has been designed as a pilot study to test methodology and to deliver outputs that will contribute to the needs mentioned above, thereby helping to increase public good outcomes from marine farming in Tasmania.
Objectives: 1. A recommendation of social return on investment (SRoI) metrics that can be incorporated into assessment of aquaculture development and activities 2.
