Abstract: The extracellular matrix (ECM) is the tissue microenvironment that regulates the characteristics of stromal and systemic cells to control processes such as inflammation and angiogenesis. Despite ongoing anti‐inflammatory treatment, low levels of inflammation exist in the airways in asthma, which alters ECM deposition by airway smooth muscle (ASM) cells. The altered ECM causes aberrant behaviour of cells, such as endothelial cells, in the airway tissue. We therefore sought to characterize the composition and angiogenic potential of the ECM deposited by asthmatic and non‐asthmatic ASM. After 72 hours under non‐stimulated conditions, the ECM deposited by primary human asthmatic ASM cells was equal in total protein, collagen I, III and fibronectin content to that from non‐asthmatic ASM cells. Further, the matrices of non‐asthmatic and asthmatic ASM cells were equivalent in regulating the growth, activity, attachment and migration of primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Under basal conditions, asthmatic and non‐asthmatic ASM cells intrinsically deposit an ECM of equivalent composition and angiogenic potential. Previous findings indicate that dysregulation of the airway ECM is driven even by low levels of inflammatory provocation. This study suggests the need for more effective anti‐inflammatory therapies in asthma to maintain the airway ECM and regulate ECM‐mediated aberrant angiogenesis.

Abstract: To provide consensus on how to plan, organize and implement exercise-based injury prevention program (IPP) in sports. Delphi. LimeSurvey platform. Experienced sports physical therapists from the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy member countries. Factors related to sports IPP planning, organization and implementation. We included 305 participants from 32 countries. IPP planning should be based on an athlete's injury history, on pre-season screening results, and on injury rates (respectively, 98%, 92%, 89% agreement). In total 97% participants agreed that IPP organization should depend on the athlete's age, 93% on the competition level, and 93% on the availability of low-cost materials. It was agreed that IPP should mainly be implemented in warm-up sessions delivered by the head or strength/conditioning coach, with physical training sessions and in idual physical therapy sessions (respectively, 94%, 92%, 90% agreement). Strong consensus was reached on (1) IPP based on the athlete's injury history, pre-season screening and evidence-based sports-specific injury rates (2) IPP organization based on the athlete's age, competition level, and the availability of low-cost materials and (3) IPP implementation focussing on warm-up sessions implemented by the strength/conditioning coach, and/or in idual prevention sessions by the physical therapist.

Abstract: This study examined the acute effects of combined tobacco smoking and exercise on immune-inflammatory responses in smoker populations with shorter or longer smoking history. The cohort comprised 14 young male adult (YSM) and 12 middle-aged (MSM) male active cigarette smokers matched for aerobic fitness and smoking behavior. Following an initial familiarization and baseline testing session, participants completed a smoking and exercise protocol. This protocol involved the inhalation of two cigarettes (12 mg tar, 1 mg nicotine) within 15 min, and following a 10 min recovery period, 40 min of cycling at 50% peak aerobic workload. Venous blood was obtained pre- and post-protocol for analysis of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1receptor antagonist (ra), IL-1beta (β) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and total leukocyte count. There was no baseline differences between age groups for IL-6 or MCP-1 (p > 0.05), although higher basal IL-1ra was evident in YSM (p < 0.05). Further, no significant differences existed between groups for post-exercise IL-1ra or IL-6 responses though MSM demonstrated an elevated MCP-1 at 4 h post (p 0.05) were observed although higher concentrations of basophils immediately post and 4 h post-exercise, and higher eosinophils at 4 h post-exercise were evident in MSM (p < 0.05). The current study highlights that prolonged elevations in MCP-1, alongside leukocytosis, accompany inhalation of tobacco smoke prior to exercise.
