Effects of rheological variations, erosion, and geotherm characteristics on tectonic setting and seismic activity in the Val d’Agri (Southern Italy)

Abstract: Over the last decades, many studies highlighted the close relationship between thermal structure, surface processes, and tectonic forces in controlling the deformation of the lithosphere. The contribution of these key factors, however, is not constant in time and may result in a complex deformation history, as already observed in many regions around the globe. In this view, the rheology of the crust is pivotal to leading regional tectonic evolution.Among the factors that may cause remarkable strength and rheological variations in the crust, the presence of fluid phases is undoubtedly one of the most prominent. The mechanisms of rock-fluid interaction are still a debated field of research. However, it has been suggested in many studies that a major effect of fluids is enhanced seismicity of regions where they are present.In this framework, the Val d& #8217 Agri represents a perfect ex le of how crustal evolution can be influenced by several factors interacting with one another. In this region, we analyze the relationships between different mechanisms in the final structural setting of the region, with implications on the natural and induced seismicity. To this aim, we built up a numerical model that integrates the combined effects of rheological stratification of the crust, inherited zones of weakness, variations in the tectonic regime, surface erosion, and fluid presence. Our results show that variation in the strength of the evaporite layer between the carbonate platform and the basement has a profound impact on the tectonic style of the Val d& #8217 Agri. The uplifting and subsidence pattern in the region follows stages of slow vertical movements to stages of very fast uplifting and denudation, due to the activation of new tectonic structures where movement is enhanced. This reflects on pressure and temperature variations in time, that follow typical yo-yo patterns observed in several tectonically active regions. The present-day configuration of the VA is also influenced by the erosion rate. More in detail, a comparison between the observed structures in the area and our model& #8217 s results with varying erosion rates suggests that the VA has been subjected to medium to fast erosion during its evolutionary history. In addition, our model predicts the presence and orientation of faults where fluid percolation or injection at high pressure can generate clusters of microseismicity.

Abstract: Over the last decade, there has been an irreversible shift from hydrocarbon exploration towards carbon storage, low-carbon energy generation and hydrogen exploration. Whilst basin modelling techniques may be used to predict the migration of hydrocarbons through sedimentary basins on geological timescales, there remains little understanding of how fluids behave at the basin scale on present-day timescales. We apply the Darcy flow equation to present an algorithm to determine the basin-scale mobilities and maximum vertical velocity, $$v_{max}$$ v max , of CO $$_{2}$$ 2 , methane, hydrogen and hydrocarbons with depth for sandstone and carbonate. $$v_{max}$$ v max for CO $$_{2}$$ 2 and methane are on scales of m/year, whilst values for hydrocarbon fluids are an order of magnitude smaller than for other fluids. Our results indicate that the fluid mobility of subsurface CO $$_{2}$$ 2 may be sensitive to surface and near-surface temperature variations. $$v_{max}$$ v max for hydrogen is approximately 2–10 times greater than hydrocarbon fluids, yielding important consequences for the future use of basin modelling software for determining hydrogen migration for exploration and storage.

Automatic extraction of dislocated horizons from 3D seismic data using nonlocal trace matching

Abstract: Extracting key horizons from seismic images is an important element of the seismic interpretation workflow. Although numerous computer-assisted horizon extraction methods exist, they are typically sensitive to structural and stratigraphic discontinuities. As a result, these computer-assisted methods have difficulties in extracting noncoherent dislocated horizons. We have developed a new data-driven method to correlate, track, and extract horizons from seismic volumes with complex geologic structures. Our method correlates seismic horizons across discontinuities and does not require user input in the form of seed points or prior identification of faults. Furthermore, the method is robust toward litude changes along a seismic horizon and does not jump from peak to trough or vice versa. We use a large sliding window and match full-length seismic traces using nonlocal dynamic time warping to extract grids of correlated points for our target horizons. Through computed accuracy measurements, we discard nonaccurate correlations before interpolating complete seismic horizons. Because our method does not require manually picked seed points or prior structural restoration, it does not rely on interpretive experience or geologic knowledge. The proposed method is applied on different real and complex seismic images, with two case ex les from the southwestern Barents Sea, and one on the open source Netherlands F3 seismic data.

Evidence for active upper mantle flow in the Atlantic and Indo-Australian realms since the Upper Jurassic from hiatus maps and spreading rate changes

Abstract: Histories of large-scale horizontal and vertical lithosphere motion hold important information on mantle convection. Here, we compare continent-scale hiatus maps as a proxy for mantle flow induced dynamic topography and plate motion variations in the Atlantic and Indo-Australian realms since the Upper Jurassic, finding they frequently correlate, except when plate boundary forces may play a significant role. This correlation agrees with descriptions of asthenosphere flow beneath tectonic plates in terms of Poiseuille/Couette flow, as it explicitly relates plate motion changes, induced by evolving basal shear forces, to non-isostatic vertical motion of the lithosphere. Our analysis reveals a timescale, on the order of a geological series, between the occurrence of continent-scale hiatus and plate motion changes. This is consistent with the presence of a weak upper mantle. It also shows a spatial scale for interregional hiatus, on the order of 2000–3000 km in diameter, which can be linked by fluid dynamic analysis to active upper mantle flow regions. Our results suggest future studies should pursue large-scale horizontal and vertical lithosphere motion in combination, to track the expressions of past mantle flow. Such studies would provide powerful constraints for adjoint-based geodynamic inverse models of past mantle convection.
Automated fault detection in the Arabian Basin

Abstract: In recent years, there has been a rapid development of the computer-aided interpretation of seismic data to reduce the otherwise intensive manual labor. A variety of seed detection algorithms for horizon and fault identification are integrated into popular seismic software packages. Recently, there has been an increasing focus on using neural networks for fully automatic fault detection without manually seeding each fault. These networks are usually trained with synthetic fault data sets. These data sets can be used across multiple seismic data sets however, they are not as accurate as real seismic data, particularly in structurally complex regions associated with several generations of faults. The approach taken here is to combine the accuracy of manual fault identification in certain parts of the data set with a convolutional neural network that can then sweep through the entire data set to identify faults. We have implemented our method using 3D seismic data acquired from the Arabian Basin in Saudi Arabia covering an area of 1051 km 2 . The network is trained, validated, and tested with s les that included a seismic cube and fault images that are labeled manually corresponding to the seismic cube. The model successfully identifies faults with an accuracy of 96% and an error rate of 0.12 on the training data set. To achieve a robust model, we further enhance the prediction results using postprocessing by linking discontinued segments of the same fault line, thus reducing the number of detected faults. The postprocessing improves the prediction results from the test data set by 77.5%. In addition, we introduce an efficient framework to correlate the predictions and the ground truth by measuring their average distance value. Furthermore, tests using this approach also have been conducted on the F3 Netherlands survey with complex fault geometries and find promising results. As a result, fault detection and diagnosis are achieved efficiently with structures similar to the trained data set.

Abstract: Cost and schedule overruns are endemic problems for offshore oil projects. This can be partly attributed to weather delays, resource limitations, and scheduling risks. The problem is further compounded because of the large number of interdependent activities, such as drilling and platform installation, typically involved in the buildup period of oilfield development. As a result, there is a pressing need to find robust project planning and scheduling models that consider these interacting components and associated risks in offshore oil projects. This study considers three techniques to optimize offshore oil project schedules while accounting for the impact of numerous field activities and potential delay factors these are mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), single-objective genetic algorithms (SOGAs), and nondominated sorting genetic algorithms (NSGA-II). The study compares the performance of each using a model that integrates field planning with scheduling while accounting for weather delays, resource limitations, and simultaneous operations (SIMOPS i.e., the ability to conduct more than one activity at once). The first two techniques (MILP and SOGA) optimize the oilfield schedule based on a single objective, which is to maximize net present value (NPV) or minimize project time. However, the maximum NPV schedule may result in a longer project time, whereas the shortest project time may result in a lower NPV. Therefore, the third method using NSGA-II finds Pareto-optimal schedules that balance these competing objectives. Four case studies are provided to compare the MILP and SOGA approaches with the suggested multiobjective NSGA-II.

Joint Use of Optical and Radar Remote Sensing Data for Characterizing the 2020 Aniangzhai Landslide Post-Failure Displacement

Abstract: The ancient Aniangzhai (ANZ) landslide in Danba County, Sichuan Province of southwest China was reactivated after a series of complex hazard events that occurred in June 2020. Since then, and until June 2021, emergency engineering work was carried out to prevent the further failure of the reactivated landslide. This study investigates the potential of joint use of time series Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) and optical pixel offset tracking (POT) to assess deformation characteristic and spatial-temporal evolution of the reactivated ANZ landslide during the post-failure stage. The relationships between sun illumination differences, temporal baseline of correlation pairs and the uncertainties were deeply explored. Surface deformation along the line-of-sight (LoS) direction was retrieved by the time series InSAR processing with the two Sentinel-1 datasets, revealing a maximum deformation rate up to 190 mm/year. The large horizontal displacements were also detected from the POT processing using 11 optical images acquired by the PlanetScope satellite (3 m spatial resolution), showing a significant increase of about 24 m between 24 June 2020 and 11 June 2021. The time series analysis from the InSAR and optical POT results revealed that the reactivated ANZ landslide body is gradually slowing down to a steady deformation status since its occurrence in August 2020, indicating the effectiveness of engineering work on the prevention of further landslide. A slight acceleration was detected from both InSAR and optical POT time series analysis between May 2021 and June 2021, which could be caused by the increased rainfall in May 2021.

Abstract: Mantle convection is a fundamental process responsible for shaping the tectonic evolution of the Earth. It is commonly perceived that mantle convection is difficult to constrain directly. However, it affects the horizontal and vertical motion of the lithosphere. The former is observed in the spreading rates, while the latter leaves various imprints in the geological record. In particular, the positive surface deflections driven by mantle convection create erosional/non-depositional environments, which induce gaps (hiatus) in the stratigraphic record (i.e., an absence or thinning of a sedimentary layer). Modern digital geological maps allow us to map long-wavelength no-/hiatus surfaces at continental scale systematically.Here we compare our continent-scale hiatus mapping to plate motion variations in the Atlantic and Indo-Australian realms from the Upper Jurassic onward. In general, we find the datasets correlate except when plate boundary forces may play a significant role. There is a timescale on the order of a geologic series, ten to a few tens of millions of years (Myrs), between the occurrence of continent-scale hiatus and plate motion changes. This is consistent with the presence of a weak upper mantle. Furthermore, we find significant differences in the spatial extent of hiatus patterns across and between continents, which means they cannot simply be explained by eustatic variations but should be linked to variations in the upper-mantle flow.Our results highlight the importance of geological datasets to map the temporal evolution of geodynamic processes in the deep Earth. Also, they imply that different timescales for convection and topography in convective support must be an integral component of time-dependent geodynamic Earth models. Studies of horizontal and vertical motion of the lithosphere to track past mantle flow would provide powerful constraints for adjoint-based geodynamic inverse models of past mantle convection.

A case study on semiautomatic seismic interpretation of unconformities and faults in the southwestern Barents Sea

Abstract: Recently, there has been a growing interest in automatic and semiautomatic seismic interpretation, and we have developed methods for extraction of 3D unconformities and faults from seismic data as alternatives to conventional and time-consuming manual interpretation. Our methods can be used separately or together, and they are time efficient and based on easily available 2D and 3D image-processing algorithms, such as morphological operations and image region property operations. The method for extraction of unconformities defines seismic sequences, based on their stratigraphic stacking patterns and seismic litudes, and extracts the boundaries between these sequences. The fault-extraction method extracts connected components from a coherence-based fault-likelihood cube where interfering objects are addressed prior to the extraction. We have used industry-based data acquired in a complex geological area and implemented our methods with a case study on the Polhem Subplatform, located in the southwestern Barents Sea north of Norway. For this case study, our methods result in the extraction of two unconformities and twenty-five faults. The unconformities are assumed to be the Base Pleistocene, which separates preglacial and postglacial Cenozoic sediments, and the Base Cretaceous, which separates the severely faulted Mesozoic strata from prograding Paleocene deposits. The faults are assumed to be mainly Jurassic normal faults, and they follow the trends of the eastern and southwestern boundaries of the Polhem Subplatform the north–south-trending Jason Fault complex and the northwest–southeast-trending Ringvassøy-Loppa Fault complex.
