Analytical damage tables for crystalline silicon

Abstract: Tables describing the damage profiles created after ion implantation are presented for a wide range of impurities at three tilts and twists (7°/22°, 0°/0°, and 45°/45°), showing the tilt and rotational effects on the damage profiles. While postimplantation damage is well understood in amorphous silicon, damage tables suitable for crystalline silicon, in which channeling effects are dominant, were not yet available. The impurities of concern are B, C, P, N, F, Si, As, Ga, Ge, In, and Sb. Energy ranges from 0.1 to 1000 keV. The Monte Carlo simulations are performed by the binary collision code CRYSTAL-TRIM implemented in DIOS utilizing its full cascade capability. The coefficients are extracted by a technique, called s ling calibration of profiles, which allows any damage profiles between two energies to be predicted by interpolation. This technique overcomes the limitations plaguing some of the most common analytical impurity and damage models.

Abstract: Strontium-exchanged titanium silicate, Sr-ETS-4, is a new molecular sieve with promises for exciting applications in gas separation. The literature mentions poor thermal stability and low adsorption capacity as the drawbacks of the as-synthesized Na-ETS-4 and therefore the need for cation exchange. Upon ion exchange, Sr-ETS-4 shows appreciable kinetic selectivity between methane and nitrogen, which can be improved further by controlled dehydration. In this study, we trace the changes at the molecular level behind this improvement. By combining distributed information in the literature, it is shown that the governing factors are changes in pore geometry with progressive dehydration, changes in ion occupancy, and relocation of cations due to Sr exchange.
Tribological Properties of Nanoparticle-Laden Ultrathin Films Formed by Covalent Molecular Assembly

Abstract: The tribological properties of ultrathin films containing nanoparticles encapsulated in immobilized dendrimers are investigated. The films were formed by covalent molecular assembly in supercritical carbon dioxide, and the Au nanoparticles were formed in aqueous solution. End-capping of the terminal amine groups of the dendrimer by fluorinated species resulted in a reduction in the size of the nanoparticles formed. The resulting film structure displayed a lower coefficient of friction when the nanoparticles were formed after fluorination. The observed improvement in the tribological properties is attributed to the reduction in agglomeration of the nanoparticles due to the presence of the fluorine moieties.

Abstract: We report the formation of Pd-Pt nanoparticles within a dendrimer-laden ultrathin film matrix immobilized on a solid support and constructed by covalent layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly using supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) as the processing medium. Particle size distribution and composition were controlled by precursor composition. The precursor compositions are optimized for Pd-Pt nanoparticles and later extended to the formation of Fe-Ni nanoparticles. As an ex le of the application of nanoparticles in tribology, Fe-Ni nanoparticle-laden films were observed to exhibit better tribological properties than those containing the monometallic species, thereby suggesting that combination of nanoparticles can be used to derive greater benefits.

Covalent Assembly of Gold Nanoparticles: An Application toward Transistor Memory

Abstract: This work reports a versatile approach utilizing covalent assembly of functionalized gold nanoparticles for organic field-effect transistor (OFET) based memory devices. 11-Mercapto-1-undecanol functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) having size of 5 ± 0.5 nm were synthesized and immobilized onto SiO(2) substrate through covalent binding using a functionalized polymer as a surface modifier. The pentacene OFET-based memory devices utilizing such covalently bound gold nanoparticles with nanoparticle density of 5 × 10(11) cm(-2) exhibited a large memory window (7.7 V), high on/off ratio between memory states (10(5)), and long retention time (>10,000 s). The present synthetic route for memory devices incorporating covalently immobilized gold nanoparticles has several advantages such as solution processable, enhanced device stability, low-cost, and low-temperature process and will be a step toward realization for low-cost, lightweight, flexible, logic display driver, and flash memory applications.

Abstract: Molecular dynamics (MD) is set to replace Monte Carlo (MC) methods utilizing the binary collision approximation (BCA) in modeling dopant distributions after ion implantation in the low energy regime. Simultaneous nonbinary interactions come into play as the ion slows down unlike BCA, MD automatically accounts for multiple collisions between ion and its neighboring atoms. In this work, the energy limit below which BCA fails is estimated from density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a wide range of dopants. Impurity profiles are generated using the MD code, MDRANGE. A database consisting of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) profiles covering a wide range of dopants (B, C, F, N, P, As, Ge, In, and Sb) over the energy regime of 0.5–10keV at critical channeling directions have been set up. The MD simulated profiles show good agreement with SIMS data, which have been obtained either with a quadrupole—or magnetic-sector—based mass spectrometer.

Abstract: Ultrathin films containing dendrimers are fabricated on amine- and anhydride-derivatized silicon dioxide surface through alternate layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) with interlayer linkage established by covalent bonds. X-ray photoelectron and UV-visible absorption spectroscopies, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and ellipsometry were employed to study the interfacial chemistry, growth, morphology, and thickness of the assembled film. XPS analysis suggests that the PMDA/PAMAM interlayer covalent bond is established to completion, and functional surfaces for immobilization of the next layer are available after deposition of each layer. UV-visible absorption and ellipsometry revealed layer-by-layer growth of the film. The functional property film as a porous matrix was manifested in the reduction of the refractive index upon introduction of the dendrimer.

Abstract: We report the formation of Pd, Pt and Pd/Pt nanoparticles in dendrimer-laden assemblies immobilized within a silica gel matrix and constructed by covalent layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly using supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO(2)) as the processing medium. We show that the dendrimer plays a critical role in retaining the nanoparticle precursor within the silica gel. Smaller particle size, higher yield, a denser distribution of nanoparticles and greater stability were observed when the structures were assembled in SCCO(2).

Abstract: Ultrathin films were fabricated using synthesized hydroxyl polyimide (HPI) in a layer-by-layer fashion on amine-terminated substrates of silicon, quartz, and gold. The interlayer linkages were established by using terephthaloyl chloride as a bridging agent to form ester groups between HPI layers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were employed to study the interfacial chemistry, stepwise growth, morphology, thickness, optical property, and insulation behavior of the assembled film. The films show excellent stability and strength, which can be attributed to the covalent interlayer linkage.

Abstract: We demonstrate the controlled fabrication of aggregates of gold nanoparticles as a means of enhancing the charge-storage capacity of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) devices by up to 300% at a low biasing voltage of ±4 V. Aggregates of citrate stabilized gold nanoparticles were obtained by directed electrostatic self-assembly onto an underlying nanopattern of positively charged centers. The underlying nanopatterns consist of amine functionalized gold nanoparticle arrays formed using hiphilic diblock copolymer reverse micelles as templates. The hierarchical self-organization leads to a twelve-fold increase in the number density of the gold nanoparticles and therefore significantly increases the charge storage centers for the MIS device. The MIS structure showed counterclockwise C-V hysteresis curves indicating a good memory effect. A memory window of 1 V was obtained at a low biasing voltage of ±4 V. Furthermore, C-t measurements conducted after applying a charging bias of 4 V showed that the charge was retained beyond 20,000 s. The proposed strategy can be readily adapted for fabricating next generation solution processible non-volatile memory devices.
Layer-by-layer assembled gold nanoparticle films on amine-terminated substrates

Abstract: This work reports the fabrication and characterization of multilayered gold nanoparticle (AuNP) thin films on aminosilane functionalized substrates. The films are fabricated via layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly using as-synthesized, un-modified AuNPs and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) as the building blocks. While most literature reports that AuNP based LbL assemblies are constructed with a single interlayer binding force, this work shows that both coordination and electrostatic interaction are involved in the process of assembly based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic results. The stepwise film growth behavior is demonstrated by atomic force spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. It is found that the particles agglomerate with each other and form large clusters when the number of assembled layers increases.

Abstract: Self-assembled organic thin films of dodecanethiol (DT), mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), benzotriazole (BTA), imidazole (IMD) and benzothiazole (BT) are formed by adsorption on the surface of copper thin film used in ultralarge-scale integrated circuits. The films are characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The inhibition of corrosion of these organic thin films is investigated in aerated 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization techniques. The presence of these films reduced corrosion by blocking the copper surface from the oxygen dissolved in the acid medium. The relative inhibition efficiencies of these inhibiting agents in preventing copper oxidation are found to be in the order of DT& MBT& BT& BTA& IMD. The effectiveness of the inhibitors increased with the temperature, concentration of the inhibitors, and duration of immersion in the solution. An adsorption model is proposed on the basis of variation of the impedance according to the inhibitor concentration. The stability and packing of the inhibitors on the surface appear to be the most important factors in determining the inhibitive efficiency of the inhibitors.

Abstract: An ultrathin film of oligoimide has been fabricated on amine-modified substrates of silicon and quartz through alternate layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and diaminodiphenyl ether (DDE), with interlayer links established by covalent bonds. The assembly was formed in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) and in solution (dimethyl acetamide, DMAc), and the imidization reaction was performed by thermal and chemical methods, in benzene and in the supercritical medium. X-ray photoelectron and UV-visible absorption spectroscopies, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and ellipsometry were employed to study the interfacial chemistry, growth, morphology, and thickness of the assembled film. XPS analysis confirmed the sequential deposition of PMDA and DDE through formation of amic acids. At each deposition step, surface functionalities for the assembly of the next layer were generated. The interfacial chemical reaction was almost complete in the SCF (supercritical fluid) medium, as compared to the conversions observed in conventional assembly. Both the PMDA and DDE molecules were assembled in an organized manner, resulting in uniform surface morphology. Uniform film growth was revealed from the increase of UV absorption intensity and film thickness. The overall growth and quality of the films in SCF medium were greater than that for films formed in DMAc. The results of this novel study show that an environmentally friendly solvent can be used to obtain mechanically robust and thermally stable ultrathin films with little loss of material during the imidization step. In contrast to conventional deposition of the molecular layers that utilizes liquid solvents, use of SCCO(2) avoids solvent effects and posttreatment for solvent removal, while ensuring facile transport during contact.

Polythiophene–gold nanoparticle hybrid systems: Langmuir–Blodgett assembly of nanostructured films

Abstract: In this work, we demonstrate a simple method of synthesizing nanoscale polythiophene-gold nanoparticle (AuNP) hybrid systems assembled by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. Regio-regular poly(3-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxymethyl)thiophene-2,5-diyl (PMEEMT) and poly(3-dodecylthiophene) (PDDT) were employed as the polymeric constituents. The presence of PDDT improved the hiphilicity of PMEEMT by addressing the phase separation that occurred due to convective hydrodynamic instability on the substrate. 4 layer stacks of 90% and 99% PMEEMT films exhibited uniform film structure with a significant reduction in phase separation. A detailed mechanism for minimization of the surface effect has been proposed based on the interaction of polythiophenes with the substrate. For the first time, an ex situ approach has been adopted to incorporate AuNPs into LB films without affecting the film morphology and uniformity. The incorporation of AuNPs into the polythiophene matrix, aided by the affinity of sulphur for gold, was strongly dependent on the molecular arrangement of the matrix, which in turn depended on the composition of the matrix. The hybrid polythiophene films exhibited enhanced conductivity and can be applied in sensors, photovoltaics and memory devices.
Enhanced super-hydrophobic and switching behavior of ZnO nanostructured surfaces prepared by simple solution – Immersion successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction process

Abstract: A simple and cost-effective successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method was adopted to fabricate hydrophobic ZnO nanostructured surfaces on transparent indium-tin oxide (ITO), glass and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. ZnO films deposited on different substrates show hierarchical structures like spindle, flower and spherical shape with diameters ranging from 30 to 300 nm. The photo-induced switching behaviors of ZnO film surfaces between hydrophobic and hydrophilic states were examined by water contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. ZnO nanostructured films had contact angles of ~140° and 160°±2 on glass and PET substrates, respectively, exhibiting hydrophobic behavior without any surface modification or treatment. Upon exposure to ultraviolet (UV) illumination, the films showed hydrophilic behavior (contact angle: 15°±2), which upon low thermal stimuli revert back to its original hydrophobic nature. Such reversible and repeatable switching behaviors were observed upon cyclical exposure to ultraviolet radiation. These biomimetic ZnO surfaces exhibit good anti-reflective properties with lower reflectance of 9% for PET substrates. Thus, the present work is significant in terms of its potential application in switching devices, solar coatings and self-cleaning smart windows.
Support in Daily Living for Young Adults with Neurodevelopmental Conditions in Sweden: A Qualitative Description of Current Practice

Abstract: In Sweden, people living independently and requiring daily living support can access ‘housing support’, a form of practical, educational, and social support provided by the municipalities. About two-thirds of those receiving this support have neurodevelopmental conditions, primarily autism or ADHD. Many are young adults in the process of adapting to new roles and expectations in different life domains, including education, work, and accommodation. This study aimed to provide a qualitative description of support workers’ views on current practice in housing support for young adults (aged 18 to 29) with neurodevelopmental conditions. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with 34 housing support workers across 19 Swedish regions. An inductive qualitative content analysis approach was used. The interviews depicted a complex service, subject to organizational aspects (roles, responsibilities, availability, and allocation), the joint effort of key players (young adults, relatives, and support workers), and practical aspects of service provision (finding common ground for the work, and delivery of support). Some elements of the service were poorly designed for the target group. The support workers expressed a need for more knowledge about neurodevelopmental conditions, but also described new insights related to remote delivery of support. The results raise important questions about how housing support should be organized and delivered to strike the right balance between support and autonomy, meet specific needs, and ensure equal services across municipalities. Future research should adopt multiple perspectives and approaches, to help translate best practice and available evidence into a flexible and sustainable service.

Abstract: We report a facile and simple means of synthesizing a macroscopic array of ZnO nanorods with high feature densities using a modified hydrothermal approach that involves the in situ introduction of polyelectrolyte. The ZnO nanorod arrays with heights of 1.5 μm and diameters of 350 nm were consistently reproducible and were bestowed with the advantage of in situ process tunability offered by employing polyethylenimine (PEI) as a surface modifying agent. The fabrication combines benefits from the hydrothermal approach in terms of process simplicity and flexibility and from the use polyelectrolyte that offers a better nanorod surface, quenched defect levels and enhancement of the UV band edge emission. Structural and elemental analysis of the PEI-modified and unmodified nanorods emphasize the fact that the intentional introduction of PEI results in a nanorod with better surface quality as evidenced by photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The tunability of the feature dimensions of the nanorods and an analysis of the bulk and surface (surface defect) responses to the PL point to significant promise of high density orthogonal nanorods in a number of optoelectronic applications. While the defects in the ZnO nanorods can point towards the application of ZnO nanorods in charge trap flash memory devices, highly crystalline, size tunable, high aspect ratio nanorods find applications as building components in solid state lighting.

Abstract: In the present work, vertical ZnO nanorods (NRs) were grown onto ITO substrates by a simple two step chemical process at relatively low temperature by using successive ionic layer absorption and reaction method (SILAR) and chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The investigated on n- ZnO/ p-Polythiophene heterojunction device have been fabricated with ZnO nanorods. Structural analysis reveals that the grown ZnO NRs exhibit (002) reflection with higher intensity, indicating that the ZnO NRs grown in c-axis orientation. FESEM image shows the surface morphology of grown ZnO nanorods was of hexagonal wurtzite structure whose diameter varies from 200 nm to 1μm. Room temperature Photoluminescence exhibited strong UV emission at ∼386 nm and a negligible green band confirms the presence of very low concentration of oxygen vacancies in the well-aligned ZnO nanorods. The current–voltage (I –V) characteristics of the heterojunctions show good rectifying diode characteristics. These results indicate that hybrid device fabricated from solution process is a promising approach for future light-emitting diodes (LEDs) devices.
Covalent Molecular Assembly in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: A Comparative Study between Amine- and Anhydride-Derivatized Surfaces

Abstract: Layer-by-layer covalent assembly of an oligoimide on an anhydride- derivatized silicon dioxide surface is investigated using supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) as the depositing medium. The deposited films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ellipsometry (VASE), UV-visible spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, nano indentation, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the properties of the films compared with those of an oligoimide deposited on amine-derivatized surfaces. Films formed on the anhydride surface are more uniform and stable possibly because the silane precursor for the anhydride is anchored to the surface through two (-Si-O-Si-) tripods. XPS results indicate that the interfacial reaction resulting in amide formation is almost complete in the case of the anhydride, but not in the case of the amine. We infer that the twin tripods linking the anhydride group to the surface may have improved the accessibility of the functional groups for immobilization of the next layer, thereby contributing to the better quality.

Abstract: Engelhard titanium silicate, ETS-4, is a promising new adsorbent for size-selective separation of mixtures of small gases, a leading industrially important ex le of which is methane-nitrogen separation. Single component equilibrium and kinetics of oxygen, nitrogen, and methane adsorption in Na-ETS-4 and cation-exchanged Sr-ETS-4, measured in an earlier study over a wide range of temperatures and pressures, are analyzed in this study. The adsorbent crystals were synthesized and pelletized under pressure (without any binder), thus giving rise to a bidispersed pore structure with controlling resistance in the micropores. Change in equilibrium and kinetics of adsorption of the aforementioned gases in Sr-ETS-4 due to pore shrinkage with progressively increasing dehydration temperature has also been investigated. Differential uptakes have been measured at various levels of adsorbate loading, which has allowed the elucidation of the nature of concentration dependence of micropore diffusivity. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous models are examined on the equilibrium data, while a bidispersed pore diffusion model is able to capture the differential uptakes very well. On the basis of chemical potential gradient as the driving force for diffusion, the impact of isotherm models on the concentration dependence of micropore diffusivity is also analyzed. It is shown that pore tailoring at the molecular scale by dehydration can improve the kinetic selectivity of nitrogen over methane in Sr-ETS-4 to a promising level. The models investigated are evaluated to identify essential details necessary to reliably simulate a methane-nitrogen separation process using the promising new Sr-ETS-4 adsorbent.

Abstract: The assembly of two aminosilanes on silicon dioxide surfaces is investigated in this work. It is found that for 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS), a smaller concentration of the silane and trace amounts of water in the deposition medium, an optimum time, and a postdeposition thermal curing are necessary to obtain a high primary-amine content. By optimization of deposition conditions, uniform APS films with a primary-amine content of 88.6% were obtained. The dependence of the primary-amine content on the experimental parameters is related to the extent to which amines are lost to hydrogen bonding with each other or with the substrate surface. Whenp-aminophenyltrimethoxysilane (APhS) was used, the primary-amine content in the film reached 100% and the surface morphology was more uniform than that of APS films under the same conditions. This is attributed to the rigid phenyl component in APhS that reduces opportunities for hydrogen bonding. In a comparison of the immobilization capacities of the different aminosilane substrates for pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), it is observed that higher primary-amine content favors higher uptake, and the APhS film yields 100% PMDA coverage. We infer that primary-amine content could be a measure of the film morphology and accessibility of the substrate amine groups.

Abstract: Posttransplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is a well-recognized complication of heart transplantation and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have yielded wide ranging estimates in the incidence of PTDM due in part to variable definitions applied. In addition, there is a limited published data on the management of PTDM after heart transplantation and a paucity of studies examining the effects of newer classes of hypoglycaemic drug therapies. In this review, we discuss the role of established glucose-lowering therapies and the rationale and emerging clinical evidence that supports the role of incretin-based therapies (glucagon like peptide- (GLP-) 1 agonists and dipeptidyl peptidase- (DPP-) 4 inhibitors) and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in the management of PTDM after heart transplantation. Recently published Consensus Guidelines for the diagnosis of PTDM will hopefully lead to more consistent approaches to the diagnosis of PTDM and provide a platform for the larger-scale multicentre trials that will be needed to determine the role of these newer therapies in the management of PTDM.

Abstract: The continual downscaling of silicon devices for integrated circuits requires the formation of pn junctions that are progressively shallower, incorporate increasing levels of electrically active dopant, and sustain minimal implantation damage. In the case of boron implanted into preamorphized Si, the authors show that all these goals can be accomplished simultaneously through the use of an atomically clean surface, which during annealing acts as a large sink that removes Si interstitials selectively over dopant interstitials.

Abstract: Polymer composites are fabricated by incorporating fillers into a polymer matrix. The intent for addition of fillers is to improve the physical, mechanical, chemical and rheological properties of the composite. This study reports on a unique polymer composite using hydrochar, synthesised by microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization of rice husk, as filler in polylactide matrix. The polylactide/hydrochar composites were fabricated by incorporating hydrochar in polylactide at 5%, 10%, 15% and 20 wt% by melt processing in a Haake rheomix at 170 °C. Both the neat polylactide and polylactide/hydrochar composite were characterized for mechanical, structural, thermal and rheological properties. The tensile modulus of polylactide/hydrochar composites was improved from 2.63 GPa (neat polylactide) to 3.16 GPa, 3.33 GPa, 3.54 GPa, and 4.24 GPa after blending with hydrochar at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively. Further, the incorporation of hydrochar had little effect on storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G″). The findings of this study reported that addition of hydrochar improves some characteristics of polylactide composites suggesting the potential of hydrochar as filler for polymer/hydrochar composites.

Abstract: We introduce a model for damage accumulation up to amorphization, based on the ion-implant damage structures commonly known as amorphous pockets. The model is able to reproduce the silicon amorphous-crystalline transition temperature for C, Si, and Ge ion implants. Its use as an analysis tool reveals an unexpected bimodal distribution of the defect population around a characteristic size, which is larger for heavier ions. The defect population is split in both size and composition, with small, pure interstitial and vacancy clusters below the characteristic size, and amorphous pockets with a balanced mixture of interstitials and vacancies beyond that size.

Abstract: In this work we describe a general method for formation of Pt nanoparticles within an ultrathin film matrix and its application for non-volatile memory (NVM). Our approach involves the formation of Pt nanoparticles within ultrathin film matrix formed by covalent layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and second generation of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer in supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO(2)). The hyperbranched component in the film structure serves to confine nanoparticle size and improve distribution. The memory effect and retention capability is demonstrated by means of a metal-insulator semiconductor (MIS) device fabricated using the nanoparticle-laden thin film as the insulating layer.

Abstract: A novel type of composite thin film consisting of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and polymide (PI) was fabricated through layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly. To fabricate such films, bare AuNPs and a poly (amic acid) bearing pendant amine groups, namely, amino poly (amic acid) or APAA, were synthesized and assembled in an LBL fashion. Without any organic encapsulation layer on their surface, AuNPs were bound directly to APAA chains at the amine sites X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study suggested that the binding was based on a combined effect of metal-ligand coordination and electrostatic interaction, with the former dominating over the latter. An approximately linear growth of the film started from the second layer of AuNP as revealed by the UV-vis spectroscopy, and the degree of particle aggregation was higher in the first AuNP layer than in the subsequent layers due to the differences in the density of binding sites. The resultant assembly was heated to imidize the APAA, thereby creating a robust composite structure.

Abstract: Poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (PSBMA) films known for their resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption, cell/bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation were produced by surface initiated polymerization on a silicon surface via a batch reaction system in CO2 expanded liquid (CO2-EL) medium. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was carried out using 2,2'-bipyridyl as ligand and CuBr as a catalyst in water/methanol mixture with trichloro[4-(chloromethyl)phenyl]silane (CMPS) used as the initiating species. The films were grown in the CO2-EL environment at a range of conditions and thickness up to 10nm. In contrast to films produced by conventional solvent systems at atmospheric pressure, the polymer films grown by the CO2-EL process showed uniform thickness and pin-hole free topography. Most importantly, the CO2-EL processed PSBMA films showed no trace of copper (used as the catalyst), thus obviating the need for post-deposition processing and avoiding adverse effects of the metal leaching during service. Finally, PSBMA films from both the conventional and CO2-EL processes were exposed to Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and the results showed that, while in both the cases the cell proliferation rate was inhibited by the charged polymeric brush surface, the CO2-EL-processed brush exhibited inhibition to a larger extent due to the reduced occurrence of pinholes. The process can be easily exploited effectively when carrying out surface initiated polymerization on non-flat topographies, such as in trenches and nanostructured features with high aspect ratios.

Abstract: Co-combustion of hydrochar with lignite was investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis. Hydrochars were produced from coconut fibers and eucalyptus leaves under hydrothermal conditions at 250°C. The hydrochar was added in varying amounts to lignite for combustion. The results indicated that hydrothermal treatment decreased the volatile matter content and increased the fixed carbon content of the biomaterials. The elevated energy density and decreased ash content of the hydrochar improved its combustion behavior when co-fired with lignite for energy production. The hydrochars derived from coconut fiber and eucalyptus leaves had similar chemical compositions and showed similar influences on lignite combustion. Hydrochar addition increased the burnout and shortened the combustion range of the hydrochar-lignite blends. High combustion efficiency was observed due to the synergistic interactions between hydrochar and lignite during the co-combustion process. A kinetic study showed that the combustion process of hydrochar-lignite blends followed first-order reaction rates.

Abstract: A two-dimensional fabrication method was employed to assemble ultrathin multilayer films with specific three-dimensional structures by making use of interlayer and intralayer covalent bonding. The films were assembled in a layer-wise fashion on a silicon surface using bi- and multi-functional molecules as building blocks and strengthened by lateral cross-linking. The fabrication process could be controlled at the sub-nano-scale with the roughness of the surface after deposition of each layer within 0.2 nm. The film showed better resistance to harsh environments than randomly cross-linked or linearly linked films of comparable thickness. The combination of covalent LbL assembly and lateral cross-linking has significant potential as a method of fabrication for assembling nano-structures for a variety of applications.

Abstract: This work reports a versatile approach for enhancing the stability of nonvolatile memory devices through covalent assembly of functionalized gold nanoparticles. 11-mercapto-1-undecanol functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with a narrow size distribution and particle size of about 5 nm were synthesized. Then, the AuNPs were immobilized on a SiO(2) substrate using a functionalized polymer as a surface modifier. Microscopic and spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize the AuNPs and their morphology before and after immobilization. Finally, a metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) type memory device with such covalently anchored AuNPs as a charge trapping layer was fabricated. The MIS structure showed well-defined counterclockwise C-V hysteresis curves indicating a good memory effect. The flat band voltage shift was 1.64 V at a swapping voltage between ±7 V. Furthermore, the MIS structure showed a good retention characteristic up to 20,000 s. The present synthetic route to covalently immobilize gold nanoparticles system will be a step towards realization for the nanoparticle-based electronic devices and related applications.

A comprehensive scoping review of ability and disability in ADHD using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health-Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY)

Abstract: This is the first in a series of four empirical investigations to develop International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) Core Sets for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The objective here was to use a comprehensive scoping review approach to identify the concepts of functional ability and disability used in the scientific ADHD literature and link these to the nomenclature of the ICF-CY. Systematic searches were conducted using Medline/PubMed, PsycINFO, ERIC and Cinahl, to extract the relevant concepts of functional ability and disability from the identified outcome studies of ADHD. These concepts were then linked to ICF-CY by two independent researchers using a standardized linking procedure. Data from identified studies were analysed until saturation of ICF-CY categories was reached. Eighty studies were included in the final analysis. Concepts contained in these studies were linked to 128 ICF-CY categories. Of these categories, 68 were considered to be particularly relevant to ADHD (i.e., identified in at least 5 % of the studies). Of these, 32 were related to Activities and participation, 31 were related to Body functions, and five were related to environmental factors. The five most frequently identified categories were school education (53 %), energy and drive functions (50 %), psychomotor functions (50 %), attention functions (49 %), and emotional functions (45 %). The broad variety of ICF-CY categories identified in this study underlines the necessity to consider ability and disability in ADHD across all dimensions of life, for which the ICF-CY provides a valuable and universally applicable framework. These results, in combination with three additional preparatory studies (expert survey, focus groups, clinical study), will provide a scientific basis to define the ICF Core Sets for ADHD for multi-purpose use in basic and applied research, and every day clinical practice.
