Abstract: A blanket of sedimentary and regolith material covers approximately three-quarters of the Australian continent, obscuring the crustal geology below and potential mineral resources within. Sedimentary basins also trap seismic energy increasing seismic hazard and generating noisy seismograms that make determining deeper crustal and lithospheric structure more challenging. The most fundamental question that can first be asked in addressing these challenges is how thick are the sediments? Borehole drilling and active seismic experiments using a controlled seismic source (e.g. vibroseis) provide excellent constraints, but they are limited in geographical coverage due to their expense, especially when operating in remote areas. On the other hand, passive-seismic experiments that involve the deployment of seismic receivers only (i.e. seismometers) are relatively low-cost and portable, providing a practical alternative for initial surveys. Here we utilize receiver functions obtained for both temporary and permanent seismic stations in South Australia, covering regions with a erse sediment distribution. We present a straightforward method to determine the basement depth based on the arrival time of the P-converted-to-S phase generated at the boundary between the crustal basement and sedimentary strata above. Utilizing the available borehole data, we establish a simple predictive relationship between Ps arrival time and the basement depth, which could then be applied to other sedimentary basins with some consideration. The method is found to work best for Phanerozoic sediments and offers a way to determine the sediment–basement interface in unexplored areas requiring only temporary seismic stations deployed for & 6 months.

Abstract: The Australian continental crust preserves a rich geological history, but it is unclear to what extent this history is expressed deeper within the mantle. Scattering of surface waves predominantly between 100-200 km depth by lateral gradients in seismic anisotropy, termed Quasi-Love waves, offer potential new insights. Across Australasia over 275 new scatterers are detected, and are found to be preferentially located near (1) the passive continental margins, and (2) the boundaries of major geological provinces within Australia. Such lateral anisotropic gradients imply pervasive fossilized lithospheric anisotropy within the continental interior, on a scale that mirrors the crustal geology at the surface, and a strong lithosphere that preserves this signal over billions of years. Along the continental margins, lateral anisotropic gradients may indicate either the edge of the thick continental lithosphere, or small-scale dynamic processes in the asthenosphere, such as edge-drive convection, tied to the transition from oceanic to continental lithosphere.

Limitations in sub-surface seismic imaging below the Moho, however, mean that is unclear to what extent, and to what depth, this rich geological history is expressed in the mantle. Studies of seismic anisotropy, which reflect past resent mantle deformation, can offer potential insights. One commonly employed technique is shear wave splitting, in which the wave polarisation is measured. New such results from seismic arrays deployed across central Australia, reveal a pattern of anisotropy that is consistent with past deformation of the Australian lithosphere that has been preserved for over 300 million years. Another informative technique is to use scattered surface waves, called Quasi-Love waves, that can detect lateral gradients in seismic anisotropy. The first such study for the region finds that scatterers are preferentially located near (1) the passive continental margins, and (2) the boundaries of major geological provinces within Australia. Such lateral anisotropic gradients within the continental interior imply pervasive fossilized lithospheric anisotropy, on a scale that mirrors the crustal geology at the surface. Abstract: & & The Australian continent, being void of plate boundaries, is often perceived as seismically quiescent. However, around 100 magnitude three or larger earthquakes are typically recorded in Australia each year, with a magnitude 6+ occurring every 8-10 years. Such intra-plate activity can pose a significant risk as they are often non-periodic, poorly understood, and sporadically recorded by sparse seismic networks across vast continents. Within Australia the distribution of intra-plate seismicity is non-uniform, but instead tends to concentrate along certain weak zones of increased activity. One such region is the eastern margin of the Gawler Craton in South Australia, one of the oldest building blocks of the continent. Recently several new temporary seismic arrays have been deployed in the region, transforming data coverage across South Australia. So far over 70 new local events have been recorded that would otherwise have gone undetected by the national network. After relocation the pattern of earthquakes becomes more spatially defined and appears to be closely tied to the edge of the Gawler Craton. Supporting evidence suggests that these events may be associated with a trans-crustal scale fault system that adds new constraints on the poorly defined craton boundary.& &

Probabilistic ambient noise imaging of the Macquarie Ridge Complex using ocean-bottom and land-based seismometers

Abstract: The Macquarie Ridge Complex, located at the boundary between Indo-Australian and Pacific plates in the southwest Pacific Ocean, hosts the largest sub-marine earthquakes in the 20th century, not associated with ongoing subduction. We deployed 27 ocean-bottom seismometers, of which 15 have been recovered successfully, to understand the origin of the sub-marine earthquakes and their potential earthquake and tsunami hazards to Australia and New Zealand. Additionally, we deployed five land-based seismometers on Macquarie Island.We explore state-of-the-art processing methods to analyze the new seismic dataset from the retrieved seismic stations. One of the goals is to image the tectonic settings beneath the MRC. Here, we present a first-order tomographic model and its relevant uncertainty estimate of the region constructed from ambient noise surface waves using a probabilistic inversion framework. The tomographic image will be complemented with receiver-based imaging results such as those from P-wave coda autocorrelations and receiver functions to confirm the existence of possible geometries. The results are expected to supply a fresh understanding of the tectonic settings under the MRC and unpuzzle the origin of the significant underwater earthquakes in the 20th century.
Comparison of different uncertainty techniques in urban stormwater quantity and quality modelling

Abstract: Urban drainage models are important tools used by both practitioners and scientists in the field of stormwater management. These models are often conceptual and usually require calibration using local datasets. The quantification of the uncertainty associated with the models is a must, although it is rarely practiced. The International Working Group on Data and Models, which works under the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, has been working on the development of a framework for defining and assessing uncertainties in the field of urban drainage modelling. A part of that work is the assessment and comparison of different techniques generally used in the uncertainty assessment of the parameters of water models. This paper compares a number of these techniques: the Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE), the Shuffled Complex Evolution Metropolis algorithm (SCEM-UA), an approach based on a multi-objective auto-calibration (a multialgorithm, genetically adaptive multi-objective method, AMALGAM) and a Bayesian approach based on a simplified Markov Chain Monte Carlo method (implemented in the software MICA). To allow a meaningful comparison among the different uncertainty techniques, common criteria have been set for the likelihood formulation, defining the number of simulations, and the measure of uncertainty bounds. Moreover, all the uncertainty techniques were implemented for the same case study, in which the same stormwater quantity and quality model was used alongside the same dataset. The comparison results for a well-posed rainfall/runoff model showed that the four methods provide similar probability distributions of model parameters, and model prediction intervals. For ill-posed water quality model the differences between the results were much wider and the paper provides the specific advantages and disadvantages of each method. In relation to computational efficiency (i.e. number of iterations required to generate the probability distribution of parameters), it was found that SCEM-UA and AMALGAM produce results quicker than GLUE in terms of required number of simulations. However, GLUE requires the lowest modelling skills and is easy to implement. All non-Bayesian methods have problems with the way they accept behavioural parameter sets, e.g. GLUE, SCEM-UA and AMALGAM have subjective acceptance thresholds, while MICA has usually problem with its hypothesis on normality of residuals. It is concluded that modellers should select the method which is most suitable for the system they are modelling (e.g. complexity of the model's structure including the number of parameters), their skill/knowledge level, the available information, and the purpose of their study.
Refining the Moho across the Australian continent

Abstract: In recent years, there has been a considerable expansion of deployments of portable seismic stations across Australia, which have been analysed by receiver function or autocorrelation methods to extract estimates of Moho depth. An ongoing program of full-crustal reflection profiles has now provided more than 25 000 km of reflection transects that have been interpreted for Moho structure. The Moho data set is further augmented by extensive marine reflection results. These new data sources have been combined with earlier refraction and receiver function results to provide full continental coverage, though some desert areas remain with limited s ling. The dense s ling of the Moho indicates the presence of rapid changes in Moho depth, and so, the Moho surface has been constructed using an approach that allows different weighting and spatial influence depending on the nature of the estimate. The inclusion of Moho results from continental-wide gravity inversion with low weighting helps to resolve the continent-ocean transition and to provide additional control in the least s led zones. The refined distribution indicates the presence of widespread smaller-scale variations in Moho structure. Strong lateral contrasts in crustal thickness remain, but some have become more subdued with improved s ling of critical areas. The main differences from earlier results lie in previously poorly s led regions around the Lake Eyre Basin, where additional passive seismic results indicate somewhat thicker crust though still with a strong contrast in crustal thickness to the cratonic zone to the west.
The influence of lithospheric thickness variations beneath Australia on seismic anisotropy and mantle flow

Abstract: Rapid plate motion, alongside pronounced variations in age and thickness of the Australian continental lithosphere, make it an excellent location to assess the relationship between seismic anisotropy and lithosphere-asthenosphere dynamics. In this study, SKS and PKS shear-wave splitting is conducted for 176 stations covering the transition from the South Australian Craton to eastern Phanerozoic Australia. Comparisons are made with models of lithospheric thickness as well as numerical simulations of mantle flow. Splitting results show uniform ENE-WSW aligned fast directions over the Gawler Craton and broader South Australian Craton, similar to the orientation of crustal structures generated during an episode of NW-SE directed compression and volcanism ~1.6 billion years ago. We propose that heat from volcanism weakened the lithosphere, aiding widespread lithospheric deformation, which has since been preserved in the form of frozen-in anisotropy. Conversely, over eastern Phanerozoic Australia, fast directions show strong alignment with the NNE absolute plate motion. Overall, our results suggest that when the lithosphere is thin ( km), lithospheric contributions are minimal and contributions from asthenospheric anisotropy dominate, reflecting shear of the underlying mantle by Australia’s rapid plate motion above. Further insights from geodynamical simulations of the regional mantle flow-field, which incorporate Australian and adjacent upper mantle structure, predict that asthenospheric material would be drawn in from the south and east towards the fast-moving continental keel. Such a mechanism, alongside interactions between the flow field and lithospheric structure, provides a plausible explanation for smaller-scale anomalous splitting patterns beneath eastern Australia that do not align with plate motion.

Abstract: The Macquarie Ridge Complex (MRC) constitutes the boundary between the Indo-Australian and Pacific plates in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It accommodates the world& #8217 s most potent sub-marine earthquakes that are not associated with ongoing subduction. To better understand the nature of MRC and its associated earthquakes, we aim to explore the crustal structures using recordings from island-based stations and ocean bottom seismometers (OBS). In particular, these OBSs, which are deployed in the surroundings of Macquarie Island from October 2020 to November 2021, enable us to image the refined oceanic structures beneath the study area. In this study, we obtain the body-wave reflections by computing phase coherence autocorrelations of both ambient noise and earthquake data. Our preliminary reflection profiles by both methods reveal coherent reflected P waves that may be related to Moho and additional structures within the crust and upper mantle.

MOTUS - a novel system for the device-based measurement of physical activity, sedentary behavior and sleep: a usability evaluation (Preprint)

Abstract: evice-based measurements of physical behavior, using the current methods, place a large burden on participants. The MOTUS system could reduce this burden by removing the necessity for in-person meetings, replacing diaries written on paper with digital diaries, and increasing the automation of feedback generation. o describe the development of the MOTUS system and evaluate the potential of MOTUS to reduce participant burden in a two-phase usability evaluation. OTUS was developed around 1) a thigh-worn accelerometer with Bluetooth data transfer, 2) a smartphone app containing an attachment guide, a digital diary, and facilitating automated data transfer, 3) a cloud infrastructure for data storage, 4) an analysis software to generate feedback for participants, and 5) a web-based app for administrators. We recruited 19 adults (mean age [SD, range] 45 [11, 27-63] years, 11 female) to assist in the two-phase evaluation of MOTUS. In phase one, seven participants evaluated the usability of mockups for a smartphone app. Participants interacted with the app while thinking aloud and any issues raised were classified as critical, serious, or minor, by observers. This information was used to create an improved and functional smartphone app for evaluation in phase two. In phase two, 12 participants completed a 7-day free-living measurement with MOTUS. On day 1, participants attempted 20 system-related tasks under observation, including registration on the study webpage, reading the information letter, downloading and navigating the smartphone app, attaching an accelerometer on the thigh, and completing a diary entry for both work and sleep hours. The success of task completion and any issues encountered were noted by the observer. On completion of the 7-day measurement, participants provided a rating from 0 to 100 on the System Usability Scale and participated in a semi-structured interview aimed at understanding their experience in more detail. ask completion rate was 100% for 13/20 tasks, % for 4/20 tasks, and % for 3/20 tasks. The average rating of system usability was 86 on a 0-100 scale. Thematic analysis indicated that participants perceived the system as easy to use, easy to remember, and subjectively pleasing overall. Participants with shift work reported difficulty with the entry of sleep hours, and 66% of the participants experienced slow data transfer between the app and the cloud infrastructure. Finally, a few participants desired a greater degree of detail in the generated feedback. ur two-phase usability evaluation indicated that MOTUS can reduce the burden of device-based measurements on participants. Issues around the system’s slow data transfer, participants with atypical work shifts, and the degree of automation and detail of generated feedback, should be addressed in future iterations of the MOTUS system. Within the continental interior such lateral anisotropic gradients imply pervasive fossilized lithospheric anisotropy, on a scale that mirrors the crustal geology at the surface, and a strong lithosphere that preserves this signal over billions of years. Along the continental margins, lateral anisotropic gradients may indicate either the edge of the thick continental lithosphere, or small-scale dynamic processes in the asthenosphere, such as edge-drive convection, tied to the transition from oceanic to continental crust/lithosphere.& &

A transdisciplinary and community-driven database to unravel subduction zone initiation

Abstract: Subduction zones are pivotal for the recycling of Earth’s outer layer into its interior. However, the conditions under which new subduction zones initiate are enigmatic. Here, we constructed a transdisciplinary database featuring detailed analysis of more than a dozen documented subduction zone initiation events from the last hundred million years. Our initial findings reveal that horizontally forced subduction zone initiation is dominant over the last 100 Ma, and that most initiation events are proximal to pre-existing subduction zones. The SZI Database is expandable to facilitate access to the most current understanding of subduction zone initiation as research progresses, providing a community platform that establishes a common language to sharpen discussion across the Earth Science community.
Spontaneous protein–protein crosslinking at glutamine and glutamic acid residues in long-lived proteins

Abstract: Long-lived proteins (LLPs) are susceptible to the accumulation of both enzymatic and spontaneous post-translational modifications (PTMs). A prominent PTM observed in LLPs is covalent protein–protein crosslinking. In this study, we examined aged human lenses and found several proteins to be crosslinked at Glu and Gln residues. This new covalent bond involves the amino group of Lys or an α-amino group. A number of these crosslinks were found in intermediate filament proteins. Such crosslinks could be reproduced experimentally by incubation of Glu- or Gln-containing peptides and their formation was consistent with an amino group attacking a glutarimide intermediate. These findings show that both Gln and Glu residues can act as sites for spontaneous covalent crosslinking in LLPs and they provide a mechanistic explanation for an otherwise puzzling observation, that a major fraction of Aβ in the human brain is crosslinked via Glu 22 and the N-terminal amino group.
