Abstract: Abstract. This longitudinal study aims to seek for solutions concerning the teaching and learning English at the Faculty of Medicine University of Mataram (UNRAM). The first year of the study is emphasized on the outcomes of needs analysis, which encompasses the Present Situation Analysis (PSA), the Target Situation Analysis (TSA), and the Learning Situation Analysis (LSA). Various data were collected form the documents of Standar Kompetensi Dokter Indonesia (SKDI) a.k.a. Competency Standards of Medical Doctors in Indonesia, the Graduates Profile of Faculty of Medicine UNRAM and the documents of student English proficiency levels within the last 5 years. Other sources of data were taken from a number of focused group discussions and in-depth interviews with students, alumni, subject specialists, management of Block, and various techniques. The data were then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. Findings of the study show that the level of English of students at Medical Faculty was still far from being adequate to meet the SKDI. As such, three learning goals were generated from this study, i.e. the short-tem, mid-term, and long-term goals. The study suggests that to bridge the gap, the Faculty of Medicine needs to develop a number of language programs to prepare these students to achieve competencies that meet the standard of Graduate Profile and SKDI.

Abstract: The Faculty of Medicine, the University of Mataram, Indonesia, renewed its curriculum to teach English to aide Indonesian university graduates to enter the competitive international job markets. Adopting this new curriculum will affect the provision of teaching and learning activities. This paper attempts to justify whether the use of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) would fit within the current English curriculum. A comprehensive review of a literature was conducted to identify barriers and facilitators for the implementation of CLIL in higher education settings. Results of the literature review were then used to evaluate the potential strengths and limitations of the recently renewed curriculum when implemented at the Faculty of Medicine. Availing of curriculum and learning materials has the potential to sustain CLIL implementation in the Faculty of Medicine. However, factors that may impinge the successful implementation include: lecturers’ language, content pedagogical competences and the need to employ differentiated instructional modules. An ongoing professional development for lecturers prior to curriculum implementation could address these limitations.

Abstract: Mastery of English grammar for students in English education departments has a dual purpose, namely to improve their ability to communicate in English fluently and accurately, and to prepare them for becoming English teachers capable of explaining aspects of the English language. Thus, the English grammar course series is expected to equip students with the ability to use the language at the same time as explaining elements of the English language. This investigation aims to improve the learning, learning process, and the results of English grammar courses by integrating the deductive method and holistic assessment approach. This consists of assessment for learning (AfL), assessment as learning (AaL), and assessment of learning (AoL). The study was conducted among 72 fourth-semester students in the English education department at the University of Mataram. Data were collected using various techniques such as tests, observations, portfolios, and documentation, and were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. From the analysis it was concluded that (1) the materials of EG were designed to fulfil the teaching and learning process by integrating the deductive method and the holistic assessment approach, with the proportion of AfL and AaL higher than that of AoL (2) the integration produced a significant improvement in the TOEFL test (SWE section), with an increase of 63.24 points – from an average 388.84 on the pre-test to 452.01 on the post-test (3) students responded positively to both the model used and the implementation of the deductive method and holistic assessment. The practical implication of this research is that those teaching grammar in English education need to consider applying holistic assessment in both design and implementation.

Abstract: The implementation of workshops and practice for the implementation of Lesson Study for Community Learning (LSLC) was held at MTs Sabilurrrasyad NW Barabali, Central Lombok. The purpose of this community service activity was to equip teachers at the school with the knowledge and practice of planning, implementing and evaluating interactive learning through LSLC. The outcome of this activity was the development of teachers’ pedagogical competence in implementing LSCL. Through this activity, it is hoped that these teachers can apply LSLC in their daily teaching and learning practices that are more accommodating to both teachers and students. The target audience for this workshop was the teachers of MTs Sabilurrrasyad NW Barabali, Central Lombok. The reason for the urgency of conducting this activity is that teachers in the target area lack training in developing teaching skills. They do not update their pedagogical skills. To accommodate the learning needs of andragogy, this workshop was conducted using the LSCL-style collaborative learning activity model, such as dialogue, problem solving, demonstration, problem analysis exercises without criticism, reflection and question and answer. Results of the training activity show that the workshop participants felt that they underwent substantial improvement in their pedagogical competence. They therefore expect that similar types of community services would be continued in the future, focusing on improving their professionalism. The participants revealed that they had learned much from the workshop of how to learn from others without criticism and unproductive arguments.

Abstract: As an international lingua franca, English plays an important role for students of health for both academic and career success however, it is often neglected in its planning and implementation. The present study aims at redesigning the teaching of English for midwifery students using an ESP approach by analyzing present situations (PSA), target situations (TSA), and learning situations (LSA) as the basis for designing English programs. The research was conducted at Midwifery Department, Polytechnic of Health (Politeknik Kesehatan henceforth POLTEKES) Mataram, Indonesia involving students, English lecturers, subject specialists, and management. Data were collected using triangulation techniques -- ECSCS Test, questionnaires, interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and documentation – and were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively based on the characteristics of data. The research found that (i) the students’ level of English was still low (84.6% in Basic) (ii) the target needs (necessities) are to be able to communicate both spoken and written in carrying out the duties in workplaces and professional development (iii) from those results mentioned above, there were conflicts among aspects of needs in designing courses, that is, the high target does not correspond to entry behavior, the number of credits allocated, and facilities. Considering the results of NA, it is suggested that the English programs can be designed using Necessities (TSA)-based Approach, PSA-based Approach, or Mixed Approach with its own advantages and disadvantages

Abstract: Independent Curriculum is an innovative learning approach that aims to encourage creativity, freedom of thought, and development of students potential. There are several problems such as lack of student involvement, lack of innovation and creativity and limitations in providing material. The Independent Curriculum appears as an alternative that provides a solution to this problem. This study aims to analyze the problems experienced by teachers in implementing the Independent Curriculum and its impact on teachers and students. The qualitative case study method was used to investigate the experiences of three English teachers and five student representatives from phase E using questionnaires, interviews, observations and documentation data collection methods. The results of the study found three main problems faced by teachers, namely the lack of training, support and facilities in the learning process, as well as challenges in designing learning tools. The impact felt by teachers due to these challenges included changes in teaching methods, increased pedagogical skills and knowledge, and increased motivation in teaching. While the impact felt by students includes the positive impact and negative impact of students. The positive impacts include increased involvement and motivation to learn, increased creativity and innovation, critical thinking skills, as well as collaboration and communication skills. However, the negative impacts that are felt include the lack of explanation from the teacher and some students feel too free, so they feel entitled to leave their learning obligations according to the curriculum. It can be interpreted that the impact of these problems affects the teaching and learning experience of teachers and students. To overcome these problems, it is necessary to make a comprehensive effort. Teachers need to receive adequate training to understand the concept and methodology of the Independent Curriculum and schools need to provide adequate learning facilities and infrastructure to support interactive and innovative learning.

Abstract: The results of needs analysis from Competency Standards of Indonesian Medical Doctors (SKDI) and the Profile of Faculty of Medicine, the University of Mataram, Lombok Indonesia, show that English has a strong position for students at this Faculty. English is needed for study preparation, graduation requirements, apprenticeship in a hospital, a job competition, and professional development. However, the high demand for English is not supported by well-designed language programs. This article is a part of a three-year project aiming at redesigning language programs based on the gaps between necessities (TSA) and current levels of English. It employs R & D approach. From the analysis, seven syllabi are designed to fulfill various demands, i.e., short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals. These goals produce various kinds of syllabus such as General Academic Reading, Academic Reading, TOEFL Preparation Course (Listening, SWE, and Reading), English for Communication, and English for Presentation. Those syllabi are realized by employing different approaches to syllabus design, depending on the goals and characteristics of the courses. The study yields a number of approaches to cater to students’ needs, i.e., Structural-Based (for TOEFL – SWE section), Skill-Based (for Reading and Listening on TOEFL), Genre-Based (General Academic Reading and English for Presentation), and Content-Based (for academic English), and Topic-based. Syllabi (for English for Communication). This study signifies that different purposes of language learning need different approaches to syllabus design.
