A trans-Iapetus transform fault control for the evolution of the Rheic Ocean: Implications for an early Paleozoic transition of accretionary tectonics

Abstract: The Paleozoic era begins with the final assembly of Gondwana and ends with the amalgamation of the supercontinent Pangea. Although this tectonic progression is generally well documented, one fundamental but under-studied phenomenon during this era is the transition from two-way to one-way (northward) migration of peripheral terranes between Gondwana and Laurentia-Baltica from Cambrian to Ordovician time. The two-way terrane accretion was likely initiated during the opening of the Rheic Ocean at ca. 510 Ma when several Gondwana-derived terranes comprising Carolinia, Ganderia, Avalonia, and Meguma sequentially drifted from the northern margin of Gondwana and eventually collided with Laurentia or Baltica. Over the same time interval, the Laurentia-derived Cuyania terrane (a.k.a., the “Precordillera terrane” is commonly believed to have accreted to the proto-Andean margin of Gondwana, whereas the peri-Laurentian/Dashwoods ribbon continent separated from, then re-accreted to, the Laurentian margin after being trapped during the collision of the Taconic arc. Alternatively, the Cuyania terrane is suggested to have remained attached to the Ouachita Embayment throughout the Cambrian–Ordovician, and then passed onto Gondwana during the collision between the proto-Andean margin and the hypothesized Texas Plateau at the leading edge of Cuyania. Here we explain the enigmatic, pene-contemporaneous migration of these peripheral terranes by a trans-Iapetus transform fault that was likely active between 510 and 450 Ma and extended from the proto-Appalachian margin of Laurentia to the proto-Andean margin of Gondwana. The trans-Iapetus transform fault terminated after the respective accretion of Carolinia and Ganderia to the proto-Appalachian margin and of Cuyania to the proto-Andean margin. We interpret the development of the trans-Iapetus transform during the Cambrian–Ordovician to be a consequence of the global geodynamic transition from the break-up of Rodinia (continents/terranes drifting away from Laurentia) to Pangea amalgamation (continents/terranes drifting toward assembling Laurussia).

Combining monitoring, models and palaeolimnology to assess ecosystem response to environmental change at monthly to millennial timescales: The stability of Blue Lake, North Stradbroke Island, Australia

Abstract: Human‐induced environmental change threatens freshwater ecosystems, and knowing how these systems have responded to past variability can inform management decisions. Palaeoenvironmental reconstructions provide insight, although their low temporal resolution may mask short‐term responses. Hence, a combination of short‐term, high‐resolution contemporary data and long‐term, low‐resolution palaeoenvironmental data can offer greater understanding of system behaviour. We demonstrate this approach by examining the response of a lake on N orth S tradbroke I sland, A ustralia, to environmental change, by investigating hydrological and water quality variation at different temporal scales. The data include daily lake discharge, monthly water quality, modelled annual lake discharge over a 117‐year period and comparisons of aerial photographs and lake bathymetry over the past 65 years. A palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the last c . 7500 years used pollen, stable isotopes, macrofossils and diatoms to provide a long‐term perspective. Despite variability in regional climate over recent decades, the depth and water chemistry of B lue L ake displayed little variation. At millennial timescales, there is clear evidence of catchment change in response to a marked shift in climate around 4500 years ago. However, diatom analysis indicates that B lue L ake has exhibited exceptional stability and resistance to change, compared to other A ustralian H olocene lake records. This suggests that B lue L ake has been an important climate refuge for aquatic biota in the past and, with appropriate management, should continue in this capacity into the future. This study highlights the benefits of a combined, multi‐temporal approach to inform understanding of the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems and their responses to environmental change. Such scientific understanding of system requirements is critical to achieving sustainable management objectives.

Abstract: The “Snowball Earth” ice ages featured global ice sheets for millions of years, leading to oceanic anoxia and threatening the perseverance of aerobic life on Earth. Crucially, aerobic eukaryotes survived, possibly including early animals. Iron-rich chemical sediments preserved in glacial deposits offer insights into the synglacial marine redox state. We provide evidence for oxygenated waters near ice sheet grounding lines, where oxic subglacial meltwater would be supplied to the anoxic oceans. The energy released from this mixing of oxic and anoxic waters could have fueled microbial communities and sustained localized aerobic ecosystems. This meltwater oxygen pump may therefore have been critical in the survival and evolution of aerobic eukaryotes during episodes of extreme glaciation.

New multicellular marine macroalgae from the early Tonian of northwestern Canada

Abstract: Molecular phylogenetic data suggest that photosynthetic eukaryotes first evolved in freshwater environments in the early Proterozoic and ersified into marine environments by the Tonian Period, but early algal evolution is poorly reflected in the fossil record. Here, we report newly discovered, millimeter- to centimeter-scale macrofossils from outer-shelf marine facies of the ca. 950–900 Ma (Re-Os minimum age constraint = 898 ± 68 Ma) Dolores Creek Formation in the Wernecke Mountains, northwestern Canada. These fossils, variably preserved by iron oxides and clay minerals, represent two size classes. The larger forms feature unbranching thalli with uniform cells, differentiated cell walls, longitudinal striations, and probable holdfasts, whereas the smaller specimens display branching but no other diagnostic features. While the smaller population remains unresolved phylogenetically and may represent cyanobacteria, we interpret the larger fossils as multicellular eukaryotic macroalgae with a plausible green algal affinity based on their large size and presence of rib-like wall ornamentation. Considered as such, the latter are among the few green algae and some of the largest macroscopic eukaryotes yet recognized in the early Neoproterozoic. Together with other Tonian fossils, the Dolores Creek fossils indicate that eukaryotic algae, including green algae, colonized marine environments by the early Neoproterozoic Era.
