Abstract: The optical wireless communication (OWC) system has been widely studied as a promising solution for high-speed indoor applications. The transmitter ersity scheme has been proposed to improve the performance of high-speed OWC systems. However, the transmitter ersity is vulnerable to the delay of multiple channels. Recently neural networks have been studied to realize delay-tolerant indoor OWC systems, where long-short term memory (LSTM) and attention-augmented LSTM (ALSTM) recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have shown their capabilities. However, they have high computation complexity and long computation latency. In this paper, we propose a low complexity delay-tolerant RNN scheme for indoor OWC systems. In particular, an RNN with parallelized structure is proposed to reduce the computation cost. The proposed RNN schemes show comparable capability to the more complicated ALSTM, where a bit-error-rate (BER) performance within the forward-error-correction (FEC) limit is achieved for up to 5.5 symbol periods delays. In addition, previously studied LSTM/ALSTM schemes are implemented using high-end GPUs, which have high cost, high power consumption, and long processing latency. To solve these practical limitations, in this paper we further propose and demonstrate the FPGA-based RNN hardware accelerator for delay-tolerant indoor OWC systems. To optimize the processing latency and power consumption, we also propose two optimization methods: the parallel implementation with triple-phase clocking and the stream-in based computation with additive input data insertion. Results show that the FPGA-based RNN hardware accelerator with the proposed optimization methods achieves 96.75% effective latency reduction and 90.7% lower energy consumption per symbol compared with the FPGA-based RNN hardware accelerator without optimization. Compared to the GPU implementation, the latency is reduced by about 61% and the power consumption is reduced by about 58.1%.

Abstract: The spatial modulation principle has been widely studied in indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) systems to provide high-speed connections to users by encoding part of data in the spatial domain. To further increase the speed and to eliminate the requirements of accurate channel state information (CSI) and low channel correlation, in this Letter we propose and demonstrate an indoor OWC system with a filters-enhanced generalized spatial modulation (FE-GSM) scheme and 16-carrierless litude and phase (16-CAP) modulation. The 16-CAP increases the data rate in symbol domain, and the FE-GSM scheme allows activating multiple transmitters simultaneously to increase data rate in the spatial domain. Experimental results show that using a 2.5 GBaud/s indoor OWC system with three transmitters, 15 Gb/s data rate is achieved even under identical channels without pre-known CSI. The demonstrated scheme provides a promising solution to increase data rate in indoor OWC systems.

Remotely Powered and Reconfigured Quasi-Passive Reconfigurable Nodes for Optical Access Networks

Abstract: Quasi-Passive Reconfigurable (QPAR) nodes have been proposed to provide flexible power/wavelength allocation in optical access networks. QPAR only consumes power during reconfiguration, which is remotely transmitted from the central office, thus maintaining the passive nature of the network. In this paper, a QPAR control circuit is designed, and a remotely powered and reconfigured 1 × 2 × 2 QPAR (i.e., one wavelength, two power levels, and two output ports) with a 0.1 F/5 V supercapacitor (SC) remotely charged by a 1 × 8 photodiode array is experimentally demonstrated. The charged SC can power the QPAR for at least 6 s with 24 consecutive reconfigurations (200 ms each) or two reconfigurations within a maximum period of 40 hours, before the SC needs to be recharged. In addition, the demonstrated QPAR remote power scheme is compared with the previously proposed Direct Photovoltaic Power option both theoretically and experimentally. Results show that the SC based remote power mechanism is capable of driving a large number of reconfigurations simultaneously and it is better for large dimension QPARs.

Abstract: Underwater wireless communication (UWC) technology has attracted widespread attention in the past few years. Compared with conventional acoustic underwater wireless communication technology, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) technology has promising potential to provide high data rate wireless connections due to the large license-free bandwidth. Building a high-performance and reliable UOWC system has become the target of researchers and various advanced and innovative technologies have been proposed and investigated. Among them, better hardware such as transmitters and receivers, as well as more advanced modulation and signal processing techniques, are key factors in improving UOWC system performance. In this paper, we review the recent development in UOWC systems. In particular, we provide a brief introduction to different types of UOWC systems based on channel configuration, and we focus on various recent studies on advanced signal processing methods in UOWC systems, including both traditional non-machine learning (NML) equalizers and machine learning (ML) schemes based on neural networks. In addition, we also discuss the key challenges in UOWC systems for future applications.

Abstract: This paper presents a practical approach for Q/V-band modeling for low Earth orbit satellite channels based on tools from machine learning and statistical modeling. The developed Q/V-band LEO satellite channel model is presented in two folds (i) a real-time forecasting method using model-based deep learning, intended for real-time operation of satellite terminals, and (ii) a statistical channel simulator that generates the path loss as a time-series random process, intended for system design and research. The provided approach capitalizes on real satellite measurements that are obtained from AlphaSat's Q/V-band transmitter at different geographic latitudes, to model the radio channel. The results show that model-based deep learning forecasting can outperform conventional statistically derived prediction methods for varying rain and elevation angle profiles. Moreover, it can also provide more accuracy in long-term prediction in comparison to current state-of-the-art machine learning approaches for radio channel prediction. Results for the statistical channel simulator is shown to produce synthetic radio excess path loss values for varying satellite passes by capitalizing on empirical statistical models obtained from real measurements.

A Review of Silicon-Based Integrated Optical Switches

Abstract: Recently, silicon‐integrated optical circuits have attracted intensive interests, thanks to the compatibility with the complementary metal‐oxide‐semiconductor (CMOS) technology that enables mass production at low cost. The optical switch is an essential part of optical integrated circuits, with broad applications in optical communications and networks, optical computing, and sensing such as LiDAR. In general, the silicon‐integrated optical switch adopts thermo‐optic or carrier dispersion effect to realize reconfigurable signal routing. However, the use of thermo‐optic effect leads to high power consumption, and the carrier dispersion effect has the disadvantage of small refractive index change. In addition, both effects are non‐latching, and hence, continuous power consumption is required even when switching is not needed. For overcoming these drawbacks, phase‐change materials (PCMs) have been introduced into silicon‐integrated optical switches. In this paper, silicon‐integrated optical switches are classified according to the underlying structure and recent research is reviewed. Recent studies on silicon‐integrated optical switches incorporating PCMs are also reviewed. Furthermore, the pros and cons of different types of integrated optical switches with and without PCMs are compared and discussed.

Abstract: With rapidly developing high-speed wireless communications, the 60 GHz millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequency range has attracted extensive interests, and radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems have been widely investigated as a promising solution to deliver mm-wave signals. Neural networks have been proposed and studied to improve the mm-wave RoF system performances at the receiver side by suppressing both linear and nonlinear impairments. However, previous studies of neural networks in mm-wave RoF systems all focus on the use of off-line processing with high-end GPUs or CPUs, which are not practical for low power-consumption, low-cost and limited computation platform applications. To solve this issue, in this paper we investigate neural network hardware accelerator implementations for mm-wave RoF systems for the first time using the field programmable gate array (FPGA), taking advantage of the low power consumption, parallel computation, and reconfigurablity features of FPGA. Both the convolutional neural network (CNN) and binary convolutional neural network (BCNN) hardware accelerators are demonstrated. In addition, to satisfy the low-latency requirement in mm-wave RoF systems and to enable the use of low-cost compact FPGA devices, a novel inner parallel computation optimization method for implementing CNN and BCNN on FPGA is proposed. It is shown that compared with the popular embedded processor (ARM Cortex A9) execution latency, the proposed FPGA-based hardware accelerator reduces the processing delay in mm-wave RoF systems by about 99.45% and 92.79% for CNN and BCNN, respectively. Compared with non-optimized FPGA implementations, results show that the proposed inner parallel computation method reduces the processing latency by about 44.93% and 45.85% for CNN and BCNN, respectively. In addition, compared with the GPU implementation, the latency of CNN implementation with the proposed optimization method is reduced by 85.49%, while the power consumption is reduced by 86.91%. Although the latency of BCNN implementation with the proposed optimization method is larger compared with the GPU implementation, the power consumption is reduced by 86.14%. The demonstrated FPGA-based neural network hardware accelerators provide a promising solution for mm-wave RoF systems.

Abstract: The radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology has been widely studied during the past decades to extend the wireless communication coverage by leveraging the low-loss and broad bandwidth advantages of the optical fiber. With the increasing need for wireless communications, using millimeter-waves (mm-wave) in wireless communications has become the recent trend and many attempts have been made to build high-throughput and robust mm-wave RoF systems during the past a few years. Whilst the RoF technology provides many benefits, it suffers from several fundamental limitations due to the analog optical link, including the fiber chromatic dispersion and nonlinear impairments. Various approaches have been proposed to address these limitations. In particular, machine learning (ML) algorithms have attracted intensive research attention as a promising candidate for handling the complicated physical layer impairments in RoF systems, especially the nonlinearity during signal modulation, transmission and detection. In this paper, we review recent advancements in ML techniques for RoF systems, especially those which utilize ML models as physical layer signal processors to mitigate various types of impairments and to improve the system performance. In addition, ML algorithms have also been widely adopted for highly efficient RoF network management and resource allocation, such as the dynamic bandwidth allocation and network fault detection. In this paper, we also review the recent works in these research domains. Finally, several key open questions that need to be addressed in the future and possible solutions of these questions are also discussed.

Abstract: With the rapid development of optical communication systems, more advanced techniques conventionally used in long-haul transmissions have gradually entered systems covering shorter distances below 100 km, where higher-speed connections are required in various applications, such as the optical access networks, inter- and intra-data center interconnects, mobile fronthaul, and in-building and indoor communications. One of the techniques that has attracted intensive interests in short-reach optical communications is machine learning (ML). Due to its robust problem-solving, decision-making, and pattern recognition capabilities, ML techniques have become an essential solution for many challenging aspects. In particular, taking advantage of their high accuracy, adaptability, and implementation efficiency, ML has been widely studied in short-reach optical communications for optical performance monitoring (OPM), modulation format identification (MFI), signal processing and in-building/indoor optical wireless communications. Compared with long-reach communications, the ML techniques used in short-reach communications have more stringent complexity and cost requirements, and also need to be more sensitive. In this paper, a comprehensive review of various ML methods and their applications in short-reach optical communications are presented and discussed, focusing on existing and potential advantages, limitations and prospective trends.

Optical Wireless Communications Using Signal Space Diversity with Spatial Modulation

Abstract: A signal space ersity (SSD) scheme was proposed to be incorporated with spatial modulation (SM) in an intensity-modulation/direct-detection-based multiple-input-single-output (MISO) indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) system to improve bit-error-rate (BER) performance and system throughput. SSD was realized via signal constellation rotation and ersity interleaving using different channel gains to improve the BER. With SM incorporated, the MISO-OWC system throughput increased. Theoretical BER expressions of the SSD scheme were established for the first time by investigating the distance of neighboring constellation symbols upon maximum-likelihood detection. Such BER expressions were further verified by numerical results. The results showed that, except for the slightly-lower-accuracy performance brought by comparable distances of neighboring constellation symbols in cases of low signal-to-noise ratios, these BER expressions were accurate in most scenarios. Moreover, theoretical investigations of channel gain distributions were performed at different signal constellation rotation angles to show the capability of the SSD scheme to improve the BER. The results showed that a significantly improved BER by two orders of magnitude could be achieved using a reasonably high channel-gain ratio and a larger constellation rotation angle. The SSD-SM scheme provides a promising option to achieve transmitter ersity with an enhanced throughput in high-speed indoor OWC systems.

Abstract: Terahertz communications has been foreseen as a key enabler to the sixth generation (6G) of wireless communications systems. However, the design of spectrally-efficient waveforms and modulation schemes is an ongoing challenge in this regime. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the transmission of M-ary carrierless litude and phase (CAP) modulated signals using a 253 GHz photo-mixing-based terahertz wireless communications system combined with the optical transmission over a 10-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF). Experimental results show that the CAP modulation technique has a capability to support the high-speed transmission of terahertz signals over a wide range of data rates from 4 Gbit/s to 96 Gbit/s based solely on optical intensity modulation at the transmitter side and terahertz envelope detection at the receiver side. Consequently, M-ary CAP can potentially be adopted as a low-complexity waveform and modulation contender to simplify the transceivers architectures for the sixth generation (6G) terahertz communications systems, without sacrificing the high throughput targeted by these systems.

Abstract: The optical wireless communication (OWC) technology has been widely studied to provide high-speed wireless connections in indoor environments. Compared with the downlink, the uplink faces more restrictions, such as the stringent power, complexity, and cost requirements. In this Letter, we propose a waveform index modulated OWC uplink with each waveform seen as a virtual transmitter. Extra data is transmitted via the index of selectively activated virtual transmitter, and the OWC uplink speed can be improved whilst achieving similar bit-error-rate (BER) performance. The waveform index modulated uplink is experimentally demonstrated in a near-infrared OWC system. Results show that up to 15 Gb/s data rate is achieved with the proposed waveform index modulated uplink, which increases the data rate significantly with similar power and BER.

Abstract: Optical wireless access networks have seen rapid progress. With beam-steering capability, optical wireless communications can deliver very high capacity, support user mobility with indoor localization supported directly at the optical layer, be resilient against the blocking of beams by exploiting spatial ersity at the optical layer, and guarantee low-latency links with modified protocols and network architectures. This paper presents a review of recent progress in achieving functions of communication, localization, resiliency, and dynamic networking using optical-layer techniques.

Abstract: Optical technologies have been widely studied to satisfy the interconnect demand in high-performance computers and data centers, and free-space optical interconnects have been investigated for flexible card-to-card applications. To increase the interconnect speed and range, in this Letter we propose a reconfigurable free-space optical interconnect with 16-carrierless- litude-phase (16-CAP) symbol modulation and filter-enhanced spatial modulation (FE-SM). The 16-CAP increases the interconnect speed in the symbol domain, and the FE-SM scheme increases the speed in the spatial domain, even under highly correlated optical interconnect channels. A 50 Gb/s reconfigurable optical interconnect is experimentally demonstrated. The results show that the impact of FE-SM on the bit error rate (BER) is negligible, while the speed is significantly improved. Compared with the conventional SM scheme, the BER is improved by over one order of magnitude. The proposed scheme is also capable of extending the interconnect range. The results show that over 70% range extension and 50% speed increase can be achieved simultaneously. The proposed scheme with a 16-CAP and FE-SM provides a promising solution in free-space optical interconnects.
Indoor optical wireless communication system with continuous and simultaneous positioning

Abstract: The optical wireless communication (OWC) technology has been widely studied to provide high-speed communications in indoor environments. The indoor OWC-based positioning function is also highly demanded and the received signal strength (RSS) method has attracted intensive interests, where multiple transmitters are used and the positioning information is provided by estimating the channel gain from each transmitter with known location. However, this process normally requires dedicated positioning time slots, RF carriers or codewords, which limit the system data rate and throughput. To solve this limitation, in this paper we propose a filter-enhanced indoor OWC positioning scheme, where spatial waveform shaping filters are applied to the transmitters, thus enabling the signals from different transmitters to be separated via matched filters at the receiver side. Hence, this approach allows the RSS information to be obtained from the wireless communication signal directly and the positioning function realized without affecting the wireless communication data rate or throughput. In addition, since positioning is realized using the communication signal, continuous positioning can be achieved for real-time tracking. The proposed filter-enhanced positioning scheme is experimentally demonstrated in a near-infrared indoor OWC system with laser transmitters. Results show that an average positioning accuracy of 5.41 cm and 2.5 Gb/s wireless communication are achieved simultaneously. The proposed filter-enhanced positioning scheme can also be applied in visible light communication (VLC) systems with LED transmitters, and the feasibility is verified via simulations. The proposed filter-enhanced scheme provides a promising positioning method in indoor OWC systems without affecting the wireless data communication.
