Abstract: As the most routine work practice in an aluminum reduction cell, anode change introduces substantial perturbations that adversely affect the mass and heat balance of the cell which may lead to loss of process efficiency and increased energy consumption. The literature lacks a dynamic mathematical model that describes the interactions among cell variables (e.g., electrolyte temperature and flow, anode current distribution, and cell heat loss) during and following this operation, which could otherwise be used to understand the process in greater depth and to develop changes that improve process operations and control. This paper presents a spatially-discretised dynamic model for anode replacement that integrates mass balance, thermal balance and cell voltage to describe and predict local cell variables. It was experimentally validated with an industrial cell undergoing an anode change procedure. This generic model can be applied to different cell design or process conditions by using appropriate parameters (e.g., heat transfer coefficients, conductivities, and flow patterns). The model can be used to improve existing process operations or control strategies for higher process efficiency, lower energy consumption, and lower emissions.

Abstract: It has been understood for decades that process operability does not depend entirely upon the control system but also on the inherent properties of the process itself. For ex le, the decision on the size of equipment or the use of a highly integrated process may have a significant impact on the overall operability. Ignoring operability during process design may lead to a very difficult to control process. In this paper, a dynamic operability analysis of a Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) reactive distillation column is presented. The effects of two design parameters, i.e. the reboiler duty and the reflux ratio, on the operability of the reactive distillation system are studied. Process operability is defined as the ability of the process to return to the steady-state in spite of unknown but bounded disturbances. The nonlinearity of the process is represented using a Hammerstein model, which can be easily obtained during process design from the steady-state model combined with some limited information on the process dynamics. The recent operability analysis method proposed by Rojas et al. (2007) is extended such that it can be implemented conveniently as one extra step after the flowsheet simulation using a process simulator. Based on this approach, an optimal controller for this highly nonlinear process is determined by solving a linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization problem.

Abstract: The battery energy storage system has become an indispensable part of the current electricity network due to the vast integration of renewable energy sources (RESs). This paper proposes an optimal charging method of a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB)-based energy storage system, which ensures the maximum harvesting of the free energy from RESs by maintaining safe operations of the battery. The VRB has a deep discharging capability, long cycle life, and high energy efficiency with no issues of cell-balancing, which make it suitable for large-scale energy storage systems. The proposed approach determines the appropriate charging current and the optimal electrolyte flow rate based on the available time-varying input power. Moreover, the charging current is bounded by the limiting current, which prevents the gassing side-reactions and protects the VRB from overcharging. The proposed optimal charging method is investigated by simulation studies using MATLAB/Simulink.

Abstract: This paper presents a hybrid active–passive approach to fault‐tolerant control (FTC). It combines the existing active fault‐tolerant control techniques with the newly developed passive decentralized unconditionally stabilizing (DUS) control. The FTC system is developed to achieve optimized performance under sensor failures that are most frequently encountered and/or have significant impact on the process, while guaranteeing the stability under any other failures. This approach can significantly reduce the level of complexity of FTC systems, leading to cost‐effective designs. A stability condition for control systems based on reconstructed virtual sensor outputs is developed. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by control of a distillation column. Discrete‐time contraction constrained nonlinear model predictive control using graph‐based geodesic computation

Abstract: Modern chemical processes need to operate around time‐varying operating conditions to optimize plant economy, in response to dynamic supply chains (e.g., time‐varying specifications of product and energy costs). As such, the process control system needs to handle a wide range of operating conditions whilst optimizing system performance and ensuring stability during transitions. This article presents a reference‐flexible nonlinear model predictive control approach using contraction based constraints. Firstly, a contraction condition that ensures convergence to any feasible state trajectories or setpoints is constructed. This condition is then imposed as a constraint on the optimization problem for model predictive control with a general (typically economic) cost function, utilizing Riemannian weighted graphs and shortest path techniques. The result is a reference flexible and fast optimal controller that can trade‐off between the rate of target trajectory convergence and economic benefit (away from the desired process objective). The proposed approach is illustrated by a simulation study on a CSTR control problem.

Hybrid Cooling-Based Thermal Management of Containerised Vanadium Flow Battery Systems in Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract: The integration of industrial batteries with photovoltaic applications is a common practice to charge the batteries using solar energy. Long-duration flow batteries are useful in dealing with the intermittency of renewable energy sources and offer a great opportunity for total fossil fuel replacement. In this study, the effects of different battery operation time and load profiles on the temperature dynamics of a containerised vanadium flow battery system are modelled and simulated for a range of locations and seasons to identify active cooling or heating requirements that might be needed to maintain safe operating temperatures. This paper explores and analyses the stack, tank, and container temperature dynamics of 6 h and 8 h containerised vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) during periods of higher charge and discharge current using computer simulations that apply insulation with passive or active hybrid cooling thermal management where needed to keep the battery temperature within a safe operating range under a range of climate conditions. According to the simulation results, when adopting the hybrid cooling strategy as described in the case study, for a 30 kW–240 kWh VFB system with ambient temperatures fluctuating between 25 °C and 45 °C, the monthly electricity consumption of the air conditioning system, calculated using average power, can be maintained at a relatively low level of approximately 330 kWh. By employing an air conditioning system with an airflow rate of 0.2 m3/s and a suitable thermal management strategy, it is sufficient to keep an 8 h system operating within a safe temperature range when the ambient temperature is between 15 °C and 35 °C. This study presents the first application of our previously developed containerised VFB thermodynamic model to explore the necessity of active cooling or heating in PV (photovoltaic) applications across different geographical locations and seasons. This analysis provides valuable insights for battery designers and manufacturers to understand the performance of containerised battery systems under various climate conditions. Furthermore, this paper is the first to apply this model for simulating 6 and 8 h batteries and to adopt a hybrid thermal management strategy. The simulation data offer guidance on whether active cooling or heating is required for industrialised vanadium batteries with capacities exceeding 6 h.

Abstract: In this article, a robust distributed economic model predictive control (DEMPC) approach is developed for plant‐wide chemical processes. The proposed approach achieves arbitrary feasible setpoints that may vary frequently, attenuates the plant‐wide effects of unknown disturbances and minimizes a plant‐wide economic cost. In this approach, a plant‐wide process is represented as a network of process units and each process unit is controlled by an in idual controller which shares a plant‐wide optimization economic objective and stability conditions through the network. To ensure the convergence of process variables to arbitrary setpoints, a contraction condition is developed for the DEMPC, based on the contraction theory. To deal with the effects of interactions among process units, the concept of dissipativity is adopted. Using sum‐separable control contraction metrics, a reference‐independent robust stability condition is developed to ensure the plant‐wide disturbance effects (under interactions among process units) to be attenuated in terms of differential ℒ 2 gain and represented by a plant‐wide differential dissipativity condition, which is converted into the differential dissipativity conditions that in idual controllers need to satisfy. This approach facilitates the optimization of plant‐wide economic costs with global constraints in a distributed way, allowing efficient implementation of alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). The proposed approach is illustrated using a reactor‐separator process.
