A model for simulating the deposition of water-lain sediments in dryland environments

Abstract: Abstract. A numerical process-imitating model, the Discrete Storm Event Sedimentation Simulator (DSESS), has been developed to represent the climatic and hydraulic conditions of drylands in modelling their geomorphological development and sedimentary facies distributions. The ultimate aim is to provide insights into the lateral variability of permeability in the Triassic Sandstone aquifers of the UK for the study of solute movement. DSESS employs discrete storm-flood automata, released across a cellular landscape, to model sediment transport: erosion, migration and deposition. Sediment classes with different grain sizes can be modelled. Empirical process-based equations are used to quantify the movement of the automata, their erosion potential, sediment-carrying capacity and interaction with the underlying sediments. The approach emphasises the sequence of dryland storm events and associated floods rather than their timing. Flood events are assumed to be discrete in time. Preliminary tests carried out with DSESS using simple systems and idealised initial conditions produce lithological and land surface features characteristic of dryland settings and indicate the potential of the model for large-scale, long-time modelling of sedimentary facies development. Markedly different results are observed across the range of tests carried out in response to the non-linear interactions between the different elements of the landscape and the floodwaters simulated with DSESS. Simulations show that sediment accumulations develop concave upward radial profiles, plano-convex cross-profiles and possess a general lateral grading of sediment with distance from source. The internal grain size architecture shows evidence of both persistent and rapidly changing flow conditions, with both lateral and longitudinal stepping of coarse bodies produced by ‘scour and fill’ events and random avulsions. Armoured layers form so that near-surface sediments have increased likelihood of preservation. Future developments will include representation of aeolian deposition, mass wasting and hyper-concentrated (debris) flows. Rock typing and facies identification using fractal theory and conventional petrophysical logs

Abstract: Rock typing or sub ision of a reservoir either vertically or laterally is an important task in reservoir characterisation and production prediction. Different depositional environments and diagenetic effects create rocks with different grain size distribution and grain sorting. Rock typing and zonation is usually made by analysing log data and core data (mercury injection capillary pressure and permeability measurement). In this paper, we introduce a new technique (approach) for rock typing using fractal theory in which resistivity logs are the only required data. Since resistivity logs are sensitive to rock texture, in this study, deep conventional resistivity logs are used from eight different wells. Fractal theory is applied to our log data to seek any meaningful relationship between the variability of resistivity logs and complexity of rock fabric. Fractal theory has been previously used in many stochastic processes which have common features on multiple scales. The fractal property of a system is usually characterised by a fractal dimension. Therefore, the fractal dimension of all the resistivity logs is obtained. The results of our case studies in the Cooper Basin of Australia show that the fractal dimension of resistivity logs increases from 1.14 to 1.29 for clean to shaly sand respectively, indicating that the fractal dimension increases with complexity of rock texture. The fractal dimension of resistivity logs is indicative of the complexity of pore fabric, and therefore can be used to define rock types.

Abstract: Carbon dioxide sequestration within the subsurface is an emerging field of research to mitigate the problem of increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2. The onshore/nearshore Gippsland Basin in the state of Victoria, SE Australia, contains deep saline formations that have been identified as potential targets for CO2 storage. Intensive and careful examinations are to be carried out to evaluate these targets. Numerical simulations presented in this study, which were developed using ECLIPSE software, have been designed to investigate certain parameters that influence CO2 behaviour within the subsurface structures. Analysis of results from these simulations will ultimately aid the evaluation of the Gippsland Basin as a suitable prospect for CO2 storage. Parameters of interest are the ratio of vertical to horizontal permeability, injection rate and the location/depth of perforation. Each one was varied based on a typical range. A 30-year period of CO2 injection followed by a 70-year monitoring period was used as the timeframe for each simulation run. Results of this study indicate that high values of vertical to horizontal permeability are favourable from a trapping efficiency point-of-view. However, they are not appealing from a containment perspective because they enhance buoyant migration of CO2 towards the top seal resulting in a high possibility that ultimate containment will be lost. With respect to injection rate, altering the injection rate does not have apparent effects on trapping efficiencies, namely storage by dissolution and residual gas saturation trapping. Although high values are preferable for dealing with an increased storage volume of CO2, a critical point has to be emphasized. Simulation results suggest that high reservoir injectivity rates cause CO2 to travel faster under buoyancy towards cap rock. Low injection rate decreases the storage volume of CO2. Therefore, a prudent design of injection rate is critical in order to optimise these counterbalancing factors. Additionally, perforation of the lowest section of the reservoir maximises trapping and containment efficiency as far as the injection rate is not compromised. Further emphasis should be placed on improving the resolution, accuracy and thus, the reliability of the geological model as it will directly impact numerical simulation results.

Abstract: A resurgent interest in the gas potential of the Gulf of Papua has been enhanced by the recent announcement of developing new LNG facilities in Port Moresby. Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) has recently acquired a 6,000-km2Multi-Client 3D (MC3D) survey in the gulf. Although most of the discoveries in PNG are from the highland areas, the gulf is a proven hydrocarbon province with gas/condensate accumulations previously discovered in several reef build-ups. It is thought that sediments from the Papuan Fold Belt produced clastic dominated deltas in the Gulf area. Although this play is untested offshore, there is evidence these sandy facies exist and could contain hydrocarbons. On the first phase of acquisition/interpretation, an efficient screening workflow called Prospect Scanner, developed to highlight areas of AVO effects in large 3D seismic datasets, was tested. It uses pre-stack seismic time migrated (PSTM) gathers to extract AVO attributes that are then inverted to derive relative acoustic and shear impedance volumes. Using idealised cross-plots, the relationship between Vp/Vs ratio and the Ip values gives a good indication of the fluid and lithology of the tested interval. The results are loaded into a conventional interpretation package for interpretation/visualisation. Prospect Scanner has highlighted previously undrilled turbidite and basin floor fan prospects in the region. The Vp/Vs versus Ip cross-plot shows clustering ofthe sand anomaly and good separation from the majority of the plot. These points correspond to the idealised location for a gas sand. Past concerns about lateral prediction of reservoir presence and quality associated with the basin floor fans can be addressed through this workflow.
