Thermionic and tunneling cooling thermodynamics

Abstract: We unambiguously identify and derive the irreversibilities and entropy fluxes of the quantum and classical processes that intrinsically limit the performance of thermionic and tunneling chillers. The fundamental tradeoff between cooling flux and efficiency can then be evaluated, including the ramifications for feasible cooling regimes. Quantitative illustrations are provided for real solid-state devices. We cast these results as trajectories in the temperature-entropy plane and unify the thermodynamic perspective of these quantum chillers with that of conventional cooling cycles.

Abstract: The thermodynamic behavior of conventional chillers (generalized air conditioning and refrigeration systems) is acutely sensitive to internal dissipation. Previous chiller analyses have excluded entropy production in the evaporator and condenser heat exchangers, on the assumption of its being negligible. With experimental measurements from a commercial chiller, we demonstrate that heat exchanger internal dissipation is not inconsequential, and that ignoring its contribution can lead to substantial errors in chiller diagnostics and in the prediction of chiller performance curves. To evaluate the impact of this dissipation on chiller efficiency, one needs to define a proper process average temperature (PAT). In addition to discussing the fundamental significance of the correct PAT, we will show that earlier conventional definitions of PAT, where internal irreversibilities in chiller heat exchangers have been overlooked, result in inaccurate and sometimes unphysical predictions.

Abstract: This article develops the theoretical foundation for the temperature–entropy (T–s) diagram for irreversible absorption chillers that employ either a volatile or nonvolatile working pair. The representation of a real absorption refrigeration cycle on a T–s diagram can directly depict the energetic superiority of one design over another. For practical usage, this diagrammatic approach only requires as inputs the inlet and outlet state points that can be computed based on the corresponding temperatures, pressures, and component concentrations of each of the heat-and-mass exchanger modules within a chiller system and can therefore also be employed as a useful tool for system analysis and diagnosis. The same method is also applicable to any continuously operating thermodynamic system that is wholly or partially driven by thermal power.

Abstract: We present an application of entropy production as an abstraction tool for complex processes in geodynamics. Geodynamic theories are generally based on the principle of maximum dissipation being equivalent to the maximum entropy production. This represents a restriction of the second law of thermodynamics to its upper bound. In this paper, starting from the equation of motion, the first law of thermodynamics and decomposition of the entropy into reversible and irreversible terms, 1 we come up with an entropy balance equation in an integral form. We propose that the extrema of this equation give upper and lower bounds that can be used to constrain geodynamics solutions. This procedure represents an extension of the classical limit analysis theory of continuum mechanics, which considers only stress and strain rates. The new approach, however, extends the analysis to temperature-dependent problems where thermal feedbacks can play a significant role. We apply the proposed procedure to a simple convective/conductive heat transfer problem such as in a planetary system. The results show that it is not necessary to have a detailed knowledge of the material parameters inside the planet to derive upper and lower bounds for self-driven heat transfer processes. The analysis can be refined by considering precise dissipation processes such as plasticity and viscous creep.

Abstract: This article presents a general thermodynamic framework for the temperature-entropy (T-s) diagram of batchwise operating thermodynamic cooling cycles. Our approach is fully consistent with the rigor of classical thermodynamics and captures accurately characteristics of cyclic-steady-state performance of a batchwise operating cooling cycle. The Eulerian viewpoint is adopted to allow for a time invariant description of such a cycle on a T-s plane, and this results in the formation of close loops at all internal energy storage components and their connection(s).

Abstract: An integrated bake/chill thermal processing module is developed and experimentally evaluated to achieve spatial temperature uniformity of a silicon wafer throughout the entire processing temperature cycle of r , hold, and quench in lithography. The module uses a set of thermoelectric devices which are used to provide distributed heating and cooling to the substrate for uniformity and transient temperature control. The experimental results demonstrate that the wafer spatial temperature uniformity is within ±0.3 and ±0.1°C during transient and steady-state thermal processing, respectively.

Abstract: A thermodynamic model with a novel method of describing the performances of centrifugal chillers for air-conditioning is presented. It is based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics which captures the overall entropy change due to non-isentropic compression and expansion of the thermodynamic cycle. The model gives the fundamental relation between the coefficient of performance (COP) and the cooling rates (Q e ) for (a) the modulating and (b) the throttling actions of the inlet guide-vanes of the compressor. The usefulness and the accuracy of the model are demonstrated here by analysing the in situ performance of two commercial, installed centrifugal chillers of an air-conditioning plant as well as comparing the available performance data of another chiller in the literature.

Abstract: This paper investigates the robustness of a diagnostic model for the performance evaluation of reciprocating chillers. The model, which is described by three adjustable parameters of the chiller, is verified by experimental results with three purpose-built system configurations. It is found that the model is both flexible and accurate with respect to changes in the system layout and the predictions of chiller coefficients of performance (COP) are well within the experimental uncertainties.
Activated Carbon Based Supercapacitors with a Reduced Graphene Oxide Additive: Preparation and Properties

Abstract: We have successfully enhanced the performance of commercial supercapacitors that use Japan Kuraray 80F activated carbon and Super-P conductive carbon black as the conductive agent with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) additive. The ratios of conductive carbon black to rGO studied are 3:1, 5:1, 10:1, 15:1 and 1:0. The enhancement is most pronounced at 15:1, and the specific capacitance being 137.5 F g −1 , which is a 23.8% improvement over the 1:0 control. The specific capacitance retention is 70.1% after 10000 cycles. The impedance resistance is also reduced to 1.5 Ω, which is 3.3 times lower than the 1:0 control. Additionally, the rGO additive does not alter the favorable pore size distribution of the primary matrix and successfully preserves its small mesoporous structure, which facilitates facile transport of electrolyte.

Abstract: We report a reasonably high yield (~50%) synthesis of silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires from silicon oxides and carbon in vacuum, by novel solar and l photothermal ablation methods that obviate the need for catalysis, and allow relatively short reaction times (~10 min) in a nominally one-step process that does not involve toxic reagents. The one-dimensional core/shell β-SiC/SiOx nanostructures-characterized by SEM, TEM, HRTEM, SAED, XRD and EDS-are typically several microns long, with core and outer diameters of about 10 and 30 nm, respectively. HRTEM revealed additional distinctive nanoscale structures that also shed light on the formation pathways.

Abstract: Geothermal heat is a sustainable form of alternative energy, commonly associated with the production of electricity along tectonic plate boundaries and in volcanically active zones. Outside of these special regions however it is rare to find a geothermal gradient high enough to achieve pay back on projects for generating electricity. On the other hand regions containing sedimentary aquifers are far more common and these aquifers frequently have a sufficiently high temperature gradient to make direct use of the thermal energy attractive. Meanwhile highly permeable aquifers occurring at shallow depths are possible sources for cooling water or can be both heat sources and sinks when used in combination with heat pumps. We provide a case study for the use of thermally driven absorption chillers on the University of Western Australia c us in Perth and discuss two ongoing projects: one for the heating and cooling of the offices of the Australian Resources Research Council using a reversible heat pump and the other the climate control of the planned Australian International Gravitational Observatory.

Abstract: Low-grade heat driven multi-effect distillation (MED) desalination is a very promising environmentally friendly, low emission technology. Many countries, such as Australia, are water short and conventional desalination technology is energy intensive. If a primary fossil fuel source is used, then desalination will significantly contribute to carbon dioxide emission. Low-grade waste heat from process plants and power plants generate minimal additional carbon dioxide. This source of energy is typically abundant at a temperature around 65–90 °C, which dovetails with MED technology. In this paper, we report on a new MED technology that couples perfectly with low grade waste heat to give at least a 25% freshwater yield improvement compared with conventional MED design. Typical applications and their expected improvement will also be reported.
Generating Hydrogen Gas from Methane with Carbon Captured as Pure Spheroidal Nanomaterials

Abstract: Energy production by using hydrogen gas as a feedstock is considered to be one of the keys to creating clean energy, with the proviso that the gas is generated in a sustainable way with no emissions. A simple, self-sustaining process generating hydrogen gas from methane using inexpensive stainless steel wire-mesh catalysts at elevated temperatures (800 °C) is reported. A theoretical analysis of the production of electricity by this process revealed peak chain energy efficiencies up to 21% (emission free) when using a percentage of the produced hydrogen (approximately 40% of purified yield) as the heat source. In addition, a practical method has been developed to purify the carbon byproduct, affording essentially pure highly graphitic spheroidal carbon for advanced materials applications.

Abstract: Adsorption chiller technology is one of the effective means to convert waste thermal energy into effective cooling, which substantially improves energy efficiency and lowers environmental pollution. This paper uses an improved lump-parameter design model to theoretically and experimentally evaluate the efficacy of the passive heat recovery scheme as applied to a four-bed adsorption chiller. Results show that the model can accurately track the experimental temporal system outlet temperatures. The performance predictions from this model compare favourably with experimental results. At rated temperature conditions and over a wide range of cycle times, both the cooling capacity and COP can be predicted to within 12.5%. The analyses indicate that the model can be used confidently as a design tool for a four-bed adsorption chiller and the passive heat recovery scheme can effectively improve the system performance.
Predicting isosteric heats for gas adsorption

Abstract: A method for predicting the isosteric heat of gas adsorption on solid materials is developed which requires the measurement of a single isotherm - where previous methods, such as the Clausius-Clapeyron approach, require either multiple isotherms or complex calorimetric measurement. The Tóth potential function, stemming from the Polanyi potential function, is evaluated using the Langmuir and Tóth isotherm equations to generate new equations for the isosteric heat. These new isosteric heat equations share common parameters with the isotherm equations and are determined from isotherm fitting. This method is demonstrated in the literature for gas adsorption onto solid adsorbates including zeolites of various surface charge character and non-porous rutile phase titanium dioxide. Predictions are made using the new isosteric heat equations and then compared to calorimetric data.

Abstract: The thermodynamic performance of real irreversible cooling and refrigeration systems (chillers) can be summarized in simple rectangular temperature-entropy diagrams, in analogy to classic pedagogical ex les for idealized reversible devices. The key to translating complex dissipative losses into this graphical framework is the process average temperature—a factor that can be calculated from nonintrusive experimental measurements, for converting entropy production into lost work. An uncomplicated thermodynamic model is used to transform the governing chiller performance equations into an easily-interpreted graph. Ex les based upon actual data from commercial work-driven (reciprocating) and heat-driven (absorption) chillers are presented, and are used to highlight the predominance of internal dissipation in determining chiller efficiency. With the thermodynamic diagram representation, the relative roles of each irreversibility source, as well as the reversible and endoreversible limits, become transparent.

Abstract: The catalytic cracking of methane to produce COx free hydrogen and a spectrum of advanced carbon nano materials was studied. Over several genres of catalysts by cracking of undiluted methane we produced hydrogen and highly graphitic carbon nanotubes (single-, thin- and multi-walled), straight microfibers, nano onions over the solid oxides solution, perovskite structured mixed oxides and mesoporous supported catalysts. The influences of reaction temperature on the methane conversion over various catalysts were investigated. The yields of carbon materials were monitored during the cracking running and the results indicated that these series of catalysts are promising for the commercialization of carbon nanotubes, microfibers and microballs.
