Abstract: The use of seawater and sea-sand in producing concrete has attracted increasing research attention in recent years to address the shortage of river sand and in certain applications the shortage of freshwater. In particular, reinforced concrete structures made of seawater sea-sand concrete (SSC) and corrosion-resistant fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) are particularly attractive for the development of coastal and marine infrastructure (e.g. on remote islands) as durable structures can be created using locally available materials. Existing studies on SSC or seawater concrete have been largely limited to the use of mixing water with a salinity level close to the world-average ocean salinity. Against this background, the present paper reports the first ever systematic study on the effect of salinity of mixing water on the properties of concrete. The present study covered a wide range of salinity levels from 16.5 g/L to 82.5 g/L, and examined a wide range of short-term concrete properties including the heat of hydration, shrinkage, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. The test results show that the salinity of mixing water has a considerable effect on the rate of hydration heat and shrinkage at early ages, as well as the cumulative release of hydration heat. It is also shown that the water salinity has a slight negative effect on the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of concrete at ages older than 14 days.

Abstract: The end bearing capacity of a rectangular hollow section (RHS) steel tube can be substantially increased through local strengthening using bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. This paper presents a combined experimental and numerical study into the behavior of such CFRP-strengthened RHS steel tubes with particular attention to debonding failure in such tubes. The results of an experimental study are first presented, which showed that debonding failure occurred in all the CFRP-strengthened steel tubes and the effectiveness of strengthening depended significantly on the slenderness of the webs. A finite element approach for modeling the behavior of such CFRP-strengthened steel tubes is next presented, in which a coupled cohesive zone model is employed to depict the response of FRP-to-steel bonded interfaces with a linear or a nonlinear adhesive. The finite element approach, which is shown to provide close predictions for CFRP-strengthened RHS steel tubes under an end bearing load, offers a valuable tool for understanding the behavior of these CFRP-strengthened steel tubes.

Beta-globin gene evolution in the ruminants: evidence for an ancient origin of sheep haplotypeB

Abstract: Domestic sheep (Ovis aries) can be ided into two groups with significantly different responses to hypoxic environments, determined by two allelic beta-globin haplotypes. Haplotype A is very similar to the goat beta-globin locus, whereas haplotype B has a deletion spanning four globin genes, including beta-C globin, which encodes a globin with high oxygen affinity. We surveyed the beta-globin locus using resequencing data from 70 domestic sheep from 42 worldwide breeds and three Ovis canadensis and two Ovis dalli in iduals. Haplotype B has an allele frequency of 71.4% in O. aries and was homozygous (BB) in all five wild sheep. This shared ancestry indicates haplotype B is at least 2-3 million years old. Approximately 40 kb of the sequence flanking the ~37-kb haplotype B deletion had unexpectedly low identity between haplotypes A and B. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the ergent region of sheep haplotype B is remarkably distinct from the beta-globin loci in goat and cattle but still groups with the Ruminantia. We hypothesize that this ergent ~40-kb region in haplotype B may be from an unknown ancestral ruminant and was maintained in the lineage to O. aries, but not other Bovidae, evolving independently of haplotype A. Alternatively, the ~40-kb sequence in haplotype B was more recently acquired by an ancestor of sheep from an unknown non-Bovidae ruminant, replacing part of haplotype A. Haplotype B has a lower nucleotide ersity than does haplotype A, suggesting a recent bottleneck, whereas the higher frequency of haplotype B suggests a subsequent spread through the global population of O. aries.

Abstract: Fibre-reinforced polymer–concrete–steel hybrid multi-tube concrete columns are a new form of columns recently proposed at the University of Wollongong. An multi-tube concrete column consists of an external fibre-reinforced polymer tube and a number of circular internal steel tubes, with the space inside all the tubes filled with concrete. This article presents the first ever experimental study on square multi-tube concrete columns. The experimental program included a total of 14 stub column specimens tested under axial compression, with the test variables being the thickness of the external fibre-reinforced polymer tube, and the dimensions and configuration of the internal steel tubes. The test results demonstrated that the concrete in the square multi-tube concrete columns was very effectively confined by the multiple tubes, and that the buckling of the internal steel tubes was completely prevented, leading to full structural utilization of the materials and a very ductile response. The test results also showed that the behaviour of the concrete in the square multi-tube concrete columns was significantly superior to that in the corresponding square concrete-filled fibre-reinforced polymer tubes, in terms of the compressive strength, the ultimate axial strain and the stiffness of the second branch of the stress–strain curve. A simple analytical model proposed for the axial load-axial strain curve of square multi-tube concrete columns is also presented and is shown to provide reasonable and conservative predictions of the test results.

Friction measurement and correction method in quasi-static tests of columns under combined axial and cyclic lateral loading

Abstract: In quasi-static tests of large-scale structural columns and/or columns under large axial loads, the lateral friction force between the column and the loading system can become a significant problem: they may cause considerable deviation between the measured lateral force and the actual reaction force of the column, especially under large axial compression load. Many researchers have come up with different methods to reduce or eliminate the influence of such friction force. In this article, previous treatments on the lateral friction force in quasi-static tests are first discussed. A shear force measurement device, for accurate measurement of the friction force, is then presented and calibrated. Based on the friction forces measured by the device in real tests, a simple model is proposed to predict the lateral friction force in quasi-static tests. Using the model, the measured lateral force in such tests can be corrected to obtain the actual reaction force of the column when a friction measurement device is absent. The proposed model and the correction method are then validated using results from several previous tests.
Fibre-reinforced polymer strengthening and fibre Bragg grating–based monitoring of reinforced concrete cantilever slabs with insufficient anchorage length of steel bars

Abstract: Reinforced concrete cantilever slabs are among structures that are most likely to develop structural integrity problems, as they are statically determinate and often exposed to the outdoor environment. This article presents an experimental study on the strengthening of reinforced concrete cantilever slabs where the anchorage of the top steel reinforcing bars into the adjacent wall was insufficient. The experimental study involved the use of a fibre-reinforced polymer strengthening system and fibre Bragg grating sensors for strain monitoring. The fibre-reinforced polymer strengthening system consisted of glass fibre–reinforced polymer sheets and glass fibre–reinforced polymer spike anchors which connected the glass fibre–reinforced polymer sheets to the adjacent concrete wall. The test results showed that the fibre-reinforced polymer strengthening system was effective in improving the load-carrying capacity of reinforced concrete cantilever slabs and the fibre Bragg grating sensors worked efficiently and reliably for strain monitoring. The debonding in glass fibre–reinforced polymer sheet/glass fibre–reinforced polymer anchor-to-concrete bonded joints was found to be a progressive process associated with an increasing load. The fibre-reinforced polymer strengthening system examined in this study is thus a potential ductile solution for deficient cantilever slabs.
Investigation of BFRP bar reinforced geopolymer concrete filled BFRP tube columns

Abstract: An experimental investigation was carried out on a novel type of concrete-filled tube column, which used geopolymer concrete and basalt-fibre-reinforced-polymer reinforcing bars and confinement tube. Geopolymer concrete was used in place of ordinary Portland cement concrete to counter the sustainability challenges of conventional cement manufacture. Longitudinal basalt-fibre-reinforced-polymer bars were used to replace steel reinforcement to avoid corrosion, while basalt-fibre-reinforced-polymer tube confinement was used to replace the conventionally used steel helix to enhance strength and ductility. Compressive load–deformation behaviour of 200 mm dia., 800 mm high specimens under concentric, 25 mm eccentric, 50 mm eccentric and four-point bending loads was experimentally investigated. Experimental axial load–bending moment diagrams were then produced. Although geopolymer concrete is normally considered to be more brittle than Portland cement concrete, the test results showed that the specimens with geopolymer concrete were more ductile compared to those with Portland cement concrete. It was also found that increased load eccentricity resulted in ductility enhancement in specimens with both types of concrete with basalt-fibre-reinforced-polymer bars and tubes, while steel-reinforced specimens suffered loss of ductility with increased load eccentricity.

Abstract: Applications of high-strength steel products in civil engineering have been limited by elastic local buckling, by the perceived lack of ductility, and by the perceived difficulties of welding such steels. This article proposes a new column (i.e. high-strength steel plate–concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymer tube) consisting of an outer fiber-reinforced polymer tube, concrete infill, and encased high-strength steel plates that are connected to each other by bolted angle brackets at discrete elevations. The column offers an ideal opportunity for the use of high-strength steel plates in construction, with their high yield stresses being fully utilized and without welding (and without welding residual stresses). The rationale for the column form and its expected advantages are explained and demonstrated through laboratory tests. Prefabricated glass fiber-reinforced polymer tubes of 1.5 and 3.0 mm thick and 203 mm diameter were infilled with concrete having a nominal strength of 32 MPa, with most specimens encasing steel plates of various configurations and yield stresses ranging from 290 to 455 MPa. Results from concentric and eccentric compression tests involving 13 specimens are presented to confirm the expected structural advantages. The results demonstrated that the concrete in the tested specimens was very effectively confined, and that buckling of all the steel plates was prevented by the encasing concrete up to and beyond the rupture of the fiber-reinforced polymer tubes, leading to full structural utilization of the construction materials and very ductile column responses under concentric and eccentric loadings. The needs for future research on high-strength steel plate–concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymer tube columns are also discussed.

Abstract: Externally bonded FRP systems offer an attractive method to improve the fatigue life of steel beams. The fatigue performance of such a strengthened beam can be further enhanced by prestressing the bonded FRP reinforcement. While a number of studies have been conducted on the fatigue strengthening of steel beams using FRP, they have generally been concerned with the overall performance of the strengthened beam, with limited attention to the behaviour of the FRP-to-steel interface and its effects. Against this background, this paper presents the preliminary results of an ongoing experimental program aiming at investigating the behaviour and fatigue failure mechanism of FRP-strengthened cracked steel beams under fatigue cyclic loading, with particular emphasis on the debonding process of the FRP reinforcement and the effect of debonding on crack propagation. The effects of prestressing and debonding on the fatigue performance of the strengthened beam are clearly demonstrated by the test results.
Experimental evaluation of tensile strength test methods for steel fibre-reinforced concrete

Abstract: This study presents an experimental evaluation of three different methods for determining the tensile strength of steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC). The test methods include the splitting test (ST), double punch test (DPT) and direct tensile test (DTT). The compressive strength of the concrete used in this study ranged between 30 and 80 MPa with 0%, 1·5% and 3% steel fibre by volume of the concrete. In total, 81 concrete cylinders were cast and tested for 28-d compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and double punch tensile strength of the concrete. In addition, 27 concrete prism specimens were cast and tested to determine the direct tensile strength of the concrete. The test results show that, compared to the ST, the DPT is more effective in predicting the tensile strength of SFRC, as the tensile strengths obtained from the DPT and the direct tensile test are very close. The DPT is easier to perform and costs less than the ST and the DTT.
Development and mechanical behaviour of ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete

Abstract: Ultra-high-performance concrete is typically defined as an advanced cementitious material that has a compressive strength of over 150 MPa and superior durability. This article presents the development of a new type of ultra-high-performance concrete, namely, ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete. The development of ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete addresses the challenges associated with the shortage of freshwater, river-sand and coarse aggregate in producing concrete for a marine construction project. When used together with corrosion-resistant fibre-reinforced polymer composites, the durability of the resulting structures (i.e. hybrid fibre-reinforced polymer–ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete structures) in a harsh environment can be expected to be outstanding. The ultra-high strength of ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete and the unique characteristics of fibre-reinforced polymer composites also offer tremendous opportunities for optimization towards new forms of high-performance structures. An experimental study is presented in this article to demonstrate the concept and feasibility of ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete: ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete s les with a 28-day cube compressive strength of over 180 MPa were successfully produced the s les were made of seawater and sea-sand, but without steel fibres, and were cured at room temperature. The experimental programme also examined the effects of a number of relevant variables, including the types of sand, mixing water and curing water, among other parameters. The mini-slump spread, compressive strength and stress–strain curve of the specimens were measured to clarify the effects of experimental variables. The test results show that the use of seawater and sea-sand leads to a slight decrease in workability, density and modulus of elasticity it is also likely to slightly increase the early strength but to slightly decrease the strengths at 7 days and above. Compared with freshwater curing, the seawater curing method results in a slight decrease in elastic modulus and compressive strength.
Behaviour of carbon fibre–reinforced polymer-confined hollow circular concrete columns with inner polyvinyl chloride tube

Abstract: Existing studies have shown that the use of an inner tube can significantly enhance the effectiveness of confinement in fibre-reinforced polymer-confined hollow columns. The inner tube used in the existing studies, however, generally had a large stiffness and also served as longitudinal reinforcement. The use of a stiff inner tube is inefficient in resisting bending for hollow columns with a relatively small void and may be unnecessary for constraining the inner surface of concrete. Against this background, this article presents the first experimental study on fibre-reinforced polymer-confined hollow columns with an inner polyvinyl chloride tube. The experimental program included a total of 18 specimens which were tested under axial compression. The test variables included the section configuration (i.e. solid specimens, hollow specimens and hollow specimens with a polyvinyl chloride tube) and the thickness of fibre-reinforced polymer. The test results showed that due to the beneficial effect of the polyvinyl chloride tube which provided constraints/confinement from inside, fibre-reinforced polymer-confined hollow columns with an inner polyvinyl chloride tube generally possessed good strength and ductility compared to their counterparts without a polyvinyl chloride tube.

Abstract: This article presents a new form of fibre-reinforced polymer-concrete-steel hybrid columns and demonstrates some of its expected advantages using results from an experimental study. These columns consist of a concrete-filled fibre-reinforced polymer tube that is internally reinforced with a high-strength steel tube and are referred to as hybrid double-tube concrete columns. The three components in hybrid double-tube concrete columns (i.e. the external fibre-reinforced polymer tube, the concrete infill and the internal high-strength steel tube) are combined in an optimal manner to deliver excellent short- and long-term performance. The experimental study included axial compression tests on eight hybrid double-tube concrete columns with a glass fibre–reinforced polymer external tube covering different glass fibre–reinforced polymer tube thicknesses and diameters as well as different high-strength steel tube diameters. The experimental results show that in hybrid double-tube concrete columns, the concrete is well confined by both the fibre-reinforced polymer tube and the high-strength steel tube, and the buckling of the high-strength steel tube is suppressed so that its high material strength can be effectively utilized, leading to excellent column performance. Due to the high yield stress of high-strength steel, the hoop stress developed to confine the core concrete is much higher than can be derived from a normal-strength steel tube, giving the use of high-strength steel in double-tube concrete columns an additional advantage.
