Abstract: Two-dimensional problem is systematically investigated for the coupled equations in two-dimensional decagonal quasicrystals, and three general solutions are presented by an operator method. To simplify governing equations, each general solution shall take three different forms expressed in terms of three displacement functions, which satisfy partial three differential equations of second order. To illustrate its utility, the closed-form solutions are obtained for problems of point phonon forces and phason force acting at the apex of a quasicrystal wedge, all in terms of the general solutions. Furthermore, these solutions can be degenerated to those of problems of point forces applied on the boundary of a quasicrystal half-plane.

Abstract: Green’s functions of infinite and semi-infinite plane problems of one-dimensional quasicrystals with piezoelectric effect are obtained in a closed form by Stroh formalism. Some numerical ex les under different loading conditions, such as line forces, line dislocations, and a line charge, are given to explain the mechanical and electric behaviors of the quasicrystals. Various elastic–electric constants of quasicrystals are analyzed and the coupling effects between the phonon and phason fields are studied. The presented solutions will be useful for many boundary value problems of one-dimensional quasicrystals with piezoelectric effect. Moreover, the numerical results can be used to verify the accuracy of the solutions by some numerical methods, such as the finite element and boundary element methods. Furthermore, the Stroh formalism can be generalized to the researches on more complex problems of quasicrystals.

Abstract: A functionally graded curved beam subjected to a shear tension force as well as a concentrated force at the free end is solved based on the inverse method, and a general two-dimensional solution is presented. The explicit expressions are derived by assuming that the elastic properties within curved beams vary in the radial direction according to a power law, i.e., E = E 0 r n , but are constant across the depth. After degenerating it into the isotropic homogeneous elastic cases, the results are in good consistency with existing analytical solutions. The stresses and displacements are firstly observed in different forms in terms of the different power function exponent n . These results will be useful as a guide for designing devices or as benchmark to assess other approximate methodologies.

Abstract: For one-dimensional quasi-crystals, the refined theory of thick plates is explicitly established from the general solution of quasi-crystals and the Luré method without employing ad hoc stress or deformation assumptions. For a homogeneous plate, the exact equations and solutions are derived, which consist of three parts: the biharmonic part, the shear part, and the transcendental part. For a nonhomogeneous plate, the exact governing differential equations and solutions under pure normal loadings and pure shear loadings, respectively, are obtained directly from the refined plate theory. In an illustrative ex le, explicit expressions of analytical solutions are obtained for torsion of a rectangular quasi-crystal plate.

Abstract: An exact closed-form solution of free vibration of a simply supported and multilayered one-dimensional (1D) quasi-crystal (QC) plate is derived using the pseudo-Stroh formulation and propagator matrix method. Natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented for a homogenous QC plate, a homogenous crystal plate, and two sandwich plates made of crystals and QCs. The natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of the plates show the influence of stacking sequence on multilayered plates and the different roles phonon and phason modes play in dynamic analysis of QCs. This work could be employed to further expand the applications of QCs especially if used as composite materials.

Abstract: Without employing ad hoc stress or deformation assumptions, various equations and solutions for circular cylinders are deduced systematically and directly from axisymmetric problem of transversely isotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic media. These equations and solutions can be used to construct the exact theory of cylinders. A method for the solutions of two-dimensional equations is presented, and with the method, the exact theory can now be explicitly established from the general solution and Lur’e method. The exact solutions for cylinders with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions are derived directly from the exact theory. Not taking into account the coupling effect, the result reduces to the corresponding solution of the elastic counterpart. Furthermore, an illustrative ex le studied also indicates that the exact or accurate solutions can be obtained in use of the exact theory. Hence, the results obtained here are considered reliable as a basis for more general applications.

Abstract: Owing to their specific structure, which can neither be classified as crystalline nor amorphous, quasi-crystals (QCs) exhibit properties that are interesting to both material science and mathematical physics or continuum mechanics. Within the framework of a mathematical theory of elasticity, one major focus is on features evolving from the coupling of phonon and phason fields, which is not observed in classical crystalline or amorphous materials. This paper deals with the problems of combinations of point phonon forces and point phason forces, which are applied to the interior of infinite solids and bimaterial solids of two-dimensional hexagonal QCs. By using the general solution of QCs, a series of displacement functions is adopted to obtain the analytical results when the two half-spaces are supposed to be ideally bonded or to be in smooth contact. In the final expressions, we provide three-dimensional Green’s functions for infinite bimaterial QC solids in the closed form, which are very convenient to be used in the study of dislocations, cracks and inhomogeneities of the new solid phase. Furthermore, the paper is concluded by a discussion of some special cases, in which Green’s functions for infinite transversely isotropic solids and Green’s functions for a half-space with free or fixed boundary are given.

Abstract: The piezoelectric effect is a significant property of quasicrystal. In this article, the exact solution is derived for a layered piezoelectric quasicrystal nanoplate with nonlocal effect in cylindrical bending. Based on the nonlocal theory and the pseudo-Stroh formalism, the exact solution for a homogeneous simply supported nanoplate is obtained. With the aid of the propagator matrix, the exact solution for a multilayered nanoplate is achieved. Numerical ex les are carried out to reveal the influences of span-to-thickness ratio, nonlocal parameter, and stacking sequence on piezoelectric quasicrystal nanoplates with their top surface subjected to two loadings. One is a z-direction mechanical loading and the other is an electric potential loading. These results can be served as benchmarks for the design, numerical modeling, and simulation of layered two-dimensional piezoelectric quasicrystal nanoplates under cylindrical bending.

Abstract: Generalization of the Stroh formalism to two-dimensional quasicrystal materials results in a ten-dimensional formalism for which there are five pairs of complex eigenvalues. By virtue of the generalized Stroh formalism, two-dimensional problems of quasicrystals elasticity are transferred into the boundary value problems of holomorphic vector functions in a given region. If the conformal mapping from an ellipse to a circle is known, a general method can be presented for solving the boundary value problems of holomorphic vector functions. Using the necessary and sufficient condition of boundary value problems of holomorphic vector functions, several basic two-dimensional problems in two-dimensional quasicrystals are solved.

Abstract: Without employing ad hoc assumptions, various equations and solutions for plane problems of one-dimensional quasicrystals are deduced systematically. A method for the exact solution of three-dimensional equations is presented under homogeneous and nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The equations and solutions are used to construct the refined theory of thick plates for both an in-plane extensional deformation regime and a normal or shear surface loading. With this method, the refined theory can now be explicitly established from the general solution of quasicrystals and the Lur’e method. In two illustrative ex les of infinite plates with a circular hole, it is shown that explicit expressions of analytical solutions can be obtained by using the refined theory.

Abstract: A material is spherically uniform when its generalized Hooke´s law at each material point referred to a spherical coordinate system is the same everywhere. We study a sphere of spherically uniform linear anisotropic one-dimensional quasicrystalline material subjected to radial phonon and phason strains on its surface. For a certain range of material parameters the phonon as well as the phason stress erges at the center. The applied phason strain does not affect the phonon field but the phason field is disturbed by the phonon strain. “White hole” at the center may occur when the sphere is subjected to uniform tension while uniform pressure may cause a “black hole”. This behavior depends only on a dimensionless material parameter and the kind of applied strain but not on its magnitude.

Abstract: We examined the independent contributions of First Nations ethnicity and lower income to post-fracture mortality. A similar relative increase in mortality associated with fracture appears to translate into a larger absolute increase in post-fracture mortality for First Nations compared to non-First Nations peoples. Lower income also predicted increased mortality post-fracture. First Nations peoples have a greater risk of mortality than non-First Nations peoples. We examined the independent contributions of First Nations ethnicity and income to mortality post-fracture, and associations with time to surgery post-hip fracture. Non-traumatic fracture cases and fracture-free controls were identified from population-based administrative data repositories for Manitoba, Canada (aged≥50 years). Populations were retrospectively matched for sex, age (within 5 years), First Nations ethnicity, and number of comorbidities. Differences in mortality post-fracture of hip, wrist, or spine, 1996-2004 (population 1, n=63,081), and the hip, 1987-2002(Population 2, n=41,211) were examined using Cox proportional hazards regression to model time to death. For hip fracture, logistic regression analyses were used to model the probability of death within 30 days and 1 year. Population 1: First Nations ethnicity was associated with an increased mortality risk of 30-53% for each fracture type. Lower income was associated with an increased mortality risk of 18-26%. Population 2: lower income predicted mortality overall (odds ratio (OR) 1.15, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.07-1.23) and for hip fracture cases (OR 1.18, 95%CI 1.05-1.32), as did older age, male sex, diabetes, and >5 comorbidities (all p≤0.01). Higher mortality was associated with pertrochanteric fracture (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.03-1.27), or surgery delay of 2-3 days (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.18-1.52) or ≥4 days (OR 2.35, 95% CI 2.07-2.67). A larger absolute increase in mortality post-fracture was observed for First Nations compared to non-First Nations peoples. Lower income and surgery delay>2 days predicted mortality post-fracture. These data have implications regarding prioritization of healthcare to ensure targeted, timely care for First Nations peoples and/or in iduals with lower income.
