Abstract: In this paper, an attempt is made to extend the deformation model of a communication device embedded in a viscoelastic thermoset composite polymer commonly known as Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC). The original model takes into account time dependent heat transfer from the mould surface into the SMC charge and the consequent time dependent viscosity propagation during the initial stage of the mould closing and subsequent filling. The required model parameters for viscosity and elasticity have been determined from rheological testing. The extended model will examine the effects of a number of process parameters such as mould closing speed, mould temperature and initial charge temperature. The effect of these parameters on the deformation of the communication device is discussed and is compared to experimental findings.

A Study of Squeal Noise in Vehicle Brake System

Abstract: Disc brake squeal can be classified as a form of friction-induced vibration. Eliminating brake noise is a classic challenge in the automotive industry. This paper presents methods for analyzing the unstable vibration of a car disc brake. The numerical simulation has been conducted, and its results are compared with those from the experimental tests. The root causes of brake squeal noise will be identified. Potential solutions for elimination of the brake squeal noise will be proposed. Firstly, new materials and technologies for the disc brake application will be explored, secondly, it will be illustrated how to avoid the brake squeal noise problem from the brake system design. Brake disc design changes for improving cooling performance, and service solutions for brake squeal noise will be presented.
Control of structural flutter using piezoelectric patches

Abstract: Aero-elasticity is a major concern in aerospace field. It resultes from the interaction between the air-stream and the structure. Wing flutter is a well known problem of the aero-elasticity. It which occurs when the two lowest system eigenvalues (plunge and pitch motion) coalesce at a certain air speed known as the flutter speed. The increasing use of active material induced-strain actuation such as piezoelectric materials in suppression of structural vibrations has seen its extension to wing flutter control. Higher flutter speed and hence, a wider operating envelope was achieved by delaying the coalescence of these two eigenvalues. This delaying is obtained by adding more strain energy to the system as a result of the activation of the piezoelectric actuators. This paper models a simple beam under nominal aerodynamic loading conditions for the determination of analytically-derived onset of flutter speeds. Also shown in this paper is the effect of orientation of actuated piezoelectric patches on the shift of the flutter speed.
Damage Detection in Composites Using Vibration Signatures and Mode Shapes

Abstract: Composite materials are supplanting conventional metals in aerospace, automotive, civil and marine industries in modern times. However, despite these advantageous properties, they are prone to delamination or matrix cracking. Thus, necessitating the early detection of the crack or flaw before it initiates into a serious defect. An offline approach was commonly used where in the parts examined away from service/operation. This not only consumed a lot of time but risked damage to the part during operation and handling. A detailed understanding of the various proven methods and techniques and their applicability in the analysis of vibration signatures obtained from damaged structures under dynamic conditions is essential to develop a reliable Structural Health Monitoring System (SHMS). This paper includes Vibration based damage detection testing on Carbon/Epoxy composite beams. Such composites are commonly used in the aerospace and marine industry. This material type is gaining acceptance not only in the aerospace industry but also in the automotive and construction industries. The paper reports the processing of the vibration signatures from healthy and damaged composite beams upon excitation and analysis of the mode shapes acquired. The study comprises of testing carbon/epoxy composite beams with various embedded delaminations with a mechanical actuator and a scanning laser vibrometer (SLV) as a sensor for recording the frequency response and analysing the acquired signatures based on Displacement and Curvature Mode Shapes.
Robust Autonomous Damage Detection and Assessment in Polymeric Composite Structures

Abstract: This paper introduces the some of the experimental and analytical work behind the autonomous damage detection technique. The research study conducted here resulted in the development of a Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system for a 2-D polymeric composite T-joint, used in maritime structures. Two methods of damage detection are discussed — A statistics-based outlier technique and one using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The SHM using ANNs system was found to be capable of not only detecting the presence of multiple delaminations in a composite structure, but also capable of determining the location and extent of all the delaminations present in the T-joint structure, regardless of the load (angle and magnitude) acting on the structure. The system developed relies on the examination of the strain distribution of the structure under operational loading. Finally, on testing the SHM system developed with strain signatures of composite T-joint structures, subjected to variable loading, embedded with all possible damage configurations (including multiple damage scenarios), an overall damage (location & extent) prediction accuracy of 94.1% was achieved. These results are presented and discussed in detail in this paper.
Differentiating Structural Damage From Piezo-Fibre-Based Sensor Damage in Multifunctional Composites

Abstract: Structural health monitoring systems (SHMS) are increasingly being considered for implementation in a wide range of industries, including transport, civil infrastructure, and energy production. As the application of SHM systems increase, it will be increasingly important to quantify the durability, reliability, and reparability of the SHM system. This paper investigates the electrical and electro-mechanical characteristics of piezoelectric sensors in an attempt to distinguish sensor failure from structural damage. This study involved the measurements of pertinent electrical properties for three various types of advanced piezoelectric sensors under fatigue loading. Changes in the capacitance and inductance of these sensors have been recorded, highlighting the deleterious structural changes in the sensor itself without any discernible change in the structure being monitored.

Abstract: Lately, there has been an increased demand for vehicle manufacturers to incorporate a large number of communication, security, guidance and entertainment devices in their new vehicle models. In recent decades, the list has expanded from the AM and FM radio antennas to include GPS, mobile phone, collision avoidance radar, Digital Radio and Digital TV antennas. In addition, new technologies such as vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to road side communication are being implemented at 5.9 GHz in the next generation of vehicles. In the past the AM/FM antenna was typically a mast antenna protruding from the vehicle’s exterior, recently however, the trend has been to limit the visibility of vehicular antennas as much as possible to improve vehicle design and aerodynamics. This has lead to integration of antennae so that they become a seamless part of the vehicle structure. This paper reports on a parametric study of embedding an antenna in a polymeric composite substrate in relation to several material processing and coating parameters.

A slot spiral in carbon-fibre composite laminate as a conformal load-bearing antenna

Abstract: Conformal load-bearing antenna structures, which afford load-bearing structures with radar capability, are a promising technology to reduce weight and drag of air vehicles. This article presents an investigation of the mechanical and electromagnetic performance of slot log-spiral antenna in carbon-fibre composite structures. Compared with traditional rectangular slots, equiangular slot spiral antenna is found to offer broader bandwidth and better mechanical strength. Through experimental testing and finite element analyses, a new tip design is proposed that can significantly reduce the stress concentration of the non-load-bearing log-spiral antenna. Results of mechanical tests also show that the compressive strength of a carbon-fibre composite plate featuring a spiral slot is comparable with that pertinent to a plate with a circular hole of the same size. Filling the slots with epoxy resin can further enhance the compressive strength.

Wireless Strain Sensors Using Electromagnetic Resonators

Abstract: The concept of wireless passive strain sensors has been introduced in the last few years for applications such as structural health monitoring. This study investigates the use of circular microstrip patch antenna (CMPA) sensors for wireless passive measurement of strain. The strain induced in an aluminium plate was measured wirelessly up to 5 cm away from the sensor using a CMPA made from commercial FR4 substrate, and at a distance up to 20 cm using a CMPA made from Rogers® RT/duroid 6010™. These results show the substrate of antennas is one of the factors affecting the interrogation distance. The interrogation distance between the sensor and the patch antenna was improved significantly using the Rogers® substrate.
Effect of Filler Materials on the Performance of Conformal Load-Bearing Spiral Antennas

Abstract: The slots in spiral antennas induce stress concentrations and hence may adversely affect the load-carrying capacity of the structural antenna. To minimise the detrimental effect of the slots, appropriate fillers are required to provide structural reinforcement without compromising the radar performance of the antenna. This paper presents an investigation of the effects of electrical and mechanical properties of potential filler materials on the performance of slot spiral antennas. Finite element analysis is carried out for a slot spiral that is designed to work in the C-Band range of frequencies (4–8 GHz). Computational simulations performed using commercial software packages ANSYS® and HFSS® show that by using commercially available filler materials the stress concentration factor of the spiral slot can be reduced by 20%. The results from this research enhance the previously introduced advantages of this type of conformal load-bearing antenna structure (CLAS). This CLAS concept provides a promising solution of replacing conventional externally mounted antennas, thus reducing aircraft weight and aerodynamic drag.
The effect of the configuration of the amplification device on the power output of a piezoelectric strip

Abstract: We investigated the behaviour of a polyvinylidene-fluoride piezoelectric strip (‘stalk’) cl ed at the leading edge, and hinged to an lification device (‘leaf’) at the trailing edge. Flutter of this cantilevered system was induced within smooth, parallel flow, and an AC voltage was generated from the PVDF strip. A polypropylene, triangle comprised the leaf. Two leaf parameters were varied so as to quantify their effect on the power output of the system: 1) the area, and 2) the aspect ratio. It was found that the highest power output was realised with the 2nd-largest leaf across a range of wind speeds, but the variation in power measurements was large. Thus, the 3rd-largest leaf was found to give the highest power output with the lowest power variation. This leaf area was then fixed and the aspect ratio varied. It was found that the largest aspect ratio-leaf rendered the highest power output, but had a relatively high start-up wind speed.

Waste-Derived Low-Cost Mycelium Nanopapers with Tunable Mechanical and Surface Properties

Abstract: Mycelium, the vegetative growth of filamentous fungi, has attracted increasing commercial and academic interest in recent years because of its ability to upcycle agricultural and industrial wastes into low-cost, sustainable composite materials. However, mycelium composites typically exhibit foam-like mechanical properties, primarily originating from their weak organic filler constituents. Fungal growth can be alternatively utilized as a low-cost method for on-demand generation of natural nanofibrils, such as chitin and chitosan, which can be grown and isolated from liquid wastes and byproducts in the form of fungal microfilaments. This study characterized polymer extracts and nanopapers produced from a common mushroom reference and various species of fungal mycelium grown on sugarcane byproduct molasses. Polymer yields of ∼10-26% were achieved, which are comparable to those of crustacean-derived chitin, and the nanopapers produced exhibited much higher tensile strengths than the existing mycelium materials, with values of up to ∼25 MPa (mycelium) and ∼98 MPa (mushroom), in addition to useful hydrophobic surface properties resulting from the presence of organic lipid residues in the nanopapers. Abstract: The use of composite structures in engineering applications has proliferated over the past few decades due to its distinct advantages, namely: high structural performance, corrosion resistance, and high strength/weight ratio. However, they also come with a set of disadvantages, i.e., they are prone to fiber breakage, matrix cracking, and delaminations. These types of damage are often invisible and if undetected, could lead to catastrophic failures of structures. Although there are systems to detect such damage, the criticality assessment and prognosis of the damage is often much more difficult to achieve. Abstract: The next-generation design of structural components involves combining multiple functions. The goal of such Multi-functional structures (MFS) is to incorporate various tasks and functions such as structural, electrical and thermal features within a structural housing. The performance and behaviour characteristics of the multi-functional structures can be affected by degradation of any of the sub-components. This can have consequences on the safety, cost, and operational capability. Therefore, the timely and accurate detection, characterization and monitoring of the degradation in these sub-components are major concerns in the operational environment. This calls for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) as a possible method to improve the safety and reliability of structures and thereby reduce their operational cost. As the application of SHM systems to monitor the status of the MFS increase, it will be increasingly important to determine the durability, reliability, and reparability of the components of SHM system such as sensors. The sensors themselves must be reliable enough so that they do not require replacement at intervals less than the economic lifetime of the structures and components they are monitoring. This is especially important when the deleterious structural changes in the sensor occurs without any discernible change in the structure being monitored In the present work, an assessment is carried out to quantify the degradation in the electric and electromechanical characteristics of polymer composite PZT sensors, under fatigue loading. Changes in the electrical properties of these sensors such as capacitance and inductance have been measured. The strain measurements of the sensor have also been compared to the theoretically calculated strain. The results show that the delineation of structural damage from sensor degradation is possible by monitoring the changes in the key electrical properties of the sensor components such as electrodes and PZT fibers as well as the comparison of experimentally measured and theoretically calculated strain values.

Abstract: Structural health monitoring (SHM) systems are increasingly being considered for implementation in aerospace structures. As the application of SHM systems increase, it will be important to define standardized procedures to test durability, reliability, and longevity of the systems. The work presented in this paper is some preliminary work on the integrity of Piezoelectric sensors itself when used to monitor the strains in structures. This study involved the measurements of pertinent electrical properties of these sensors over 100,000 cycles of fatigue loading. Marked changes in the capacitance and inductance of these sensors highlighted deleterious structural changes in the sensor itself without any discernible change in the structure it is supposed to monitor. This might have significant implications in the reliability assessment of sensory data from SHM systems.

Abstract: In this article, the feasibility of using a circular microstrip patch antenna to measure strain and the effects of different materials on sensitivity of the patch antenna are investigated. Also, the effect of strain direction on the frequency shift is studied. The theoretical model shows a linear relationship between strain and the shift in the resonant frequency of the antenna in any material. Both finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental tests have been undertaken to corroborate the relationship between strain and frequency shift. In addition, a new antenna sensor based on a meandered microstrip patch antennas has been designed and tested to overcome the shortcomings of the circular patch. The meandered circular microstrip patch antenna exhibited a threefold increase in sensitivity and a fivefold reduction in its physical size, when compared to the simple circular patch. The ultimate intention of this work is to configure antennas for the detection of relatively small damage zones in structures and to do so wirelessly.

Crab vs. Mushroom: A Review of Crustacean and Fungal Chitin in Wound Treatment

Abstract: Chitin and its derivative chitosan are popular constituents in wound-treatment technologies due to their nanoscale fibrous morphology and attractive biomedical properties that accelerate healing and reduce scarring. These abundant natural polymers found in arthropod exoskeletons and fungal cell walls affect almost every phase of the healing process, acting as hemostatic and antibacterial agents that also support cell proliferation and attachment. However, key differences exist in the structure, properties, processing, and associated polymers of fungal and arthropod chitin, affecting their respective application to wound treatment. High purity crustacean-derived chitin and chitosan have been widely investigated for wound-treatment applications, with research incorporating chemically modified chitosan derivatives and advanced nanocomposite dressings utilizing biocompatible additives, such as natural polysaccharides, mineral clays, and metal nanoparticles used to achieve excellent mechanical and biomedical properties. Conversely, fungi-derived chitin is covalently decorated with -glucan and has received less research interest despite its mass production potential, simple extraction process, variations in chitin and associated polymer content, and the established healing properties of fungal exopolysaccharides. This review investigates the proven biomedical properties of both fungal- and crustacean-derived chitin and chitosan, their healing mechanisms, and their potential to advance modern wound-treatment methods through further research and practical application.

Abstract: The primary focus of this paper is to report on the technique developed to extend a simulated damage site (such as a delamination) without inducing other extraneous damage modes. This was done in order to assess the suitability of curvature mode shape analyses in detecting damage types which are similar in type but different in severity or size. This paper highlights the use of vibration based testing on Carbon/Epoxy composite beams for damage detection. Such composites are commonly used in the aerospace and marine industry. The study comprises of testing carbon/epoxy composite beams with various embedded delaminations with a mechanical actuator and a Scanning Laser Vibrometer (SLV) as a sensor for recording the frequency response and the subsequent analyses of the acquired dynamic response based on Displacement and Curvature Mode Shapes. The paper also discusses the Finite Element Method (FEM)-based Analysis to validate the experimental results. In order to assess the effect of an increasing damage zone on a particular damage configuration, it was necessary to extend the damage without inflicting other damage types in the process. This paper reports on an innovative way of extending an existing delamination by a fatigue crack-growth technique. The ASTM E399-90 standard was used for the experiment and a carefully designed fatigue crack growth routine was implemented to advance the delamination in a controlled manner.

Thermal Degradation and Fire Properties of Fungal Mycelium and Mycelium - Biomass Composite Materials

Abstract: Mycelium and mycelium-biomass composites are emerging as new sustainable materials with useful flame-retardant potentials. Here we report a detailed characterisation of the thermal degradation and fire properties of fungal mycelium and mycelium-biomass composites. Measurements and analyses are carried out on key parameters such as decomposition temperatures, residual char, and gases evolved during pyrolysis. Pyrolysis flow combustion calorimetry (PCFC) evaluations reveal that the corresponding combustion propensity of mycelium is significantly lower compared to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polylactic acid (PLA), indicating that they are noticeably less prone to ignition and flaming combustion, and therefore safer to use. The hyphal diameters of mycelium decrease following pyrolysis. Cone calorimetry testing results show that the presence of mycelium has a positive influence on the fire reaction properties of wheat grains. This improvement is attributable to the relatively higher charring tendency of mycelium compared to wheat grain, which reduces the heat release rate (HRR) by acting as a thermal insulator and by limiting the supply of combustible gases to the flame front. The mycelium growth time has been found to yield no significant improvements in the fire properties of mycelium-wheat grain composites.
Structural Health Monitoring of Composite Structures using Artificial Intelligence Protocols

Abstract: This study discusses a structural health monitoring (SHM) system developed to detect the presence of delamination, and predict its location and size in a composite structure. Two structures are considered in this study: a composite beam and a T-joint structure used in ships. Finite element (FE) models of these structures are created, embedded with delaminations, and the strain distribution along the bond-line and surface of the structures is used as a damage characteristic, to get information about the structures' condition. Experimental tests are then conducted to verify the FE model, an excellent corroboration is achieved between the two. Artificial neural networks is then used in tandem with a pre-processing program developed, called the damage relativity assessment technique (DRAT), to determine the presence of the damage and then predict its size and location. This SHM system developed is completely independent of the structures' loading condition and it detected the presence, and predicted the size and location of delaminations with an acceptable level of accuracy.

Abstract: This perspective provides a commentary on the quality of life improvements made available from advances in medical device technology. An opinion of the elements necessary to bring innovation into medical device research is offered. In order to enhance the output of medical device research, strong interactive links are needed between clinicians and researchers to ensure research activities are focused on the needs of patients. Alliances with industry umbrella groups can support these links and facilitate the commercialization of new ideas generated from the research. Several forecasts for the medical device market obtained from other sources are also presented.

Multidirectional Circular Microstrip Patch Antenna Strain Sensor

Abstract: In this paper, a new design for microstrip patch antenna strain sensors is proposed. The new antenna sensor works based on the meandered microstrip patch antennas. It is threefold more sensitive than previously proposed circular microstrip patch antenna strain sensors. Also, the overall physical dimension of the new antenna sensor is reduced by the factor of five. The current sensor is able to detect strain in all directions. In order to design the antenna sensor, two available commercial FEM software packages ANSYS™ and HFSS™ are used. Both experimental and FEM results corroborate the multidirectional feature of the new antenna sensor. Also, the effect of the hole size in the structure (for coaxial connection to the antenna) on the antenna performance has been studied. Based on the results obtained, the antenna sensor can be recommended for use in structural health monitoring for strain-based damage detection in aerospace structures.

The strong diamagnetic behaviour of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer laminates

Abstract: Carbon fibers are finite conductors with a weak diamagnetic response in a static magnetic field. When illuminated with a high-frequency alternating electromagnetic wave such that the skin depth is greater than the fiber diameter, carbon-fiber composites are shown to exhibit a strong dynamic diamagnetic response. The magnetic susceptibility (χm) is controlled by the polarization angle (θ), which is the angle between the incident electric field and conductor direction. A closed form solution for this behaviour was derived using Maxwell's equations and an understanding of the induced conductor currents. The equation was verified using simulation and free space “wall” and waveguide measurements on unidirectional IM7/977-3 carbon fiber reinforced polymer laminates. The measured responses ranged from non-magnetic at θ = 90°, χm = 0, up to strongly diamagnetic at θ = 30°, χm = −0.75, over the 8-18 GHz bandwidth. The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions and computational simulations.

Abstract: This article introduces some of the experimental and analytical work in damage detection applied to polymeric composite T-joints used in maritime structures. Two methods of damage detection are discussed — A statistics-based outlier technique and one using artificial neural networks (ANNs). The SHM using ANNs system was found to be capable of not only detecting the presence of multiple delaminations in a composite structure, but also capable of determining the location and extent of all the delaminations present in the T-joint structure, regardless of the load (angle and magnitude) acting on the structure. The system developed, relies on the examination of the strain distribution of the structure under operational loading. Finally, on testing the SHM system developed with strain signatures of composite T-joint structures, subjected to variable loading, embedded with all possible damage configurations (including multiple damage scenarios), an overall damage (location and extent) prediction accuracy of 88.32% was achieved. These results are presented and discussed in detail in this article.
