Abstract: As a resource-intensive industry, the policy, processes and practices in relation to sustainable development of the construction industry is critical. An important theoretical and practical concern is the creation of indicator systems that assist with the measurement of sustainable urban development. Past research and practice has tended to focus on the measurement of sustainability of the construction projects in relation to the in idual projects or at the organizational level. This paper introduces a new measurement of sustainable development for construction industry as a whole so that countries can make comparisons. The model is based on the previous research, the fundamental meaning of sustainable development and the characteristics of the construction industry.

Abstract: The construction and project management graduates are entering an ever-changing workforce that will require a smarter way of working. Creation, use, and management of building information modelling (BIM) models is a critical part of this smarter world. The aim of this research is to develop a threshold capability framework within the context of a broader digital construction project management curriculum to enable the global integration of BIM into a construction management curriculum. This chapter reports the evaluation of the framework through an analysis of 21 interviews with key stakeholder groups. Much effort is required to guide Australian construction practitioners to embrace a greater use of BIM in practice. This research identifies that the concept of graduate resilience skills in students is critical for the success of such a transition. Infusing construction management digital literacy is a long term and evolving exercise, and confidence in delivery capability must be simultaneously built.

Abstract: Sustainable development is a significant research theme in various fields. With the developments to theory, the fundamental concept of sustainable development has expanded from only the environment perspective to now including economic, social and environment perspectives. As a resource-intensive industry, the policy, processes and practices in relation to sustainable development of the construction industry is critical. An important theoretical and practical concern is the creation of indicator systems that assist with the measurement of sustainable urban development. However there is no an internationally agreed one especially for construction industry. Past research and practice has tended to focus on the measurement of sustainability of the construction projects in relation to the in idual projects or at the organizational level. Zhang and London (2011) generated a new sustainable development measurement according to the characteristics of construction industry, the availability of data and other sustainable development indicators system which have been proposed before. This measurement will be used to analyze the performance of Chinese construction industry’s sustainability from 2001 to 2010.
The Relationship between Mindfulness and Safety Performance of Building Repair and Maintenance: An Empirical Study in Australia

Abstract: The importance of building repair and maintenance (R& M) has become more significant in recent years as the volume of building stock has expanded globally. With this growth in building stock coupled with R& M complexity unforeseen safety risks has become an increasing problem to solve. In such complex working environment a type of organisation known as high reliability organisation (HRO) is known to operate successfully. The concept of mindfulness from HRO theory has been identified as a key strategy for addressing unforeseen risks derived from the complexity in socio-technical systems. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between mindfulness and safety performance of building R& M companies. Initially, a comprehensive literature review was conducted on HROs and the concept of mindfulness to develop the research hypothesis. A questionnaire survey was utilised to collect the data from Australian building R& M professionals. A Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between mindfulness and safety performance. This study found that mindfulness has a significant impact on accident prevention in building R& M companies through discovering and managing the unexpected events owing to the complexity. The findings have implications for organisations in the way they train and implement professional development programs for their staff.

Conceptualising the Circular Economy Potential of Construction and Demolition Waste: An Integrative Literature Review

Abstract: Traditionally, construction and demolition waste (CDW) materials have been considered to be unwanted, surplus, or wastage materials or materials with zero value. Such a conceptualisation only embraces a negative aspect, which underpins the disposal of reusable and recyclable CDW materials in landfills, thus damaging the circular economy and the environment. The scope of this research was to conceptualise the circular economy potential of non-hazardous construction and demolition waste, which can be used as a resource for advancing the circular economy and sustainability in the built environment. Thus, the abbreviation ‘CEPCDR’ is used for this purpose. The study employs an integrative literature review to understand in depth whether the rationale in the existing CDW definitions advocates for the circular economy. Instead, the literature showed that the current definitions mainly support quantitative, economic, or classification needs, respectively. That is because they lack consideration of the dynamic nature of CDW materials, which embraces the spatial and temporal dimensions. The former involves the geographic context in which the CDW phenomenon eventuates, while the latter concerns the lifecycle of materials. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by conceptualising the CEPCDR using a holistic approach that includes five dimensions: the social, economic, environmental, spatial, and temporal perspectives. Furthermore, the study seeks to drive future research in measuring the CEPCDR.

Abstract: The construction industry is one of the major producers of municipal solid waste. Although there are many studies in municipal solid waste management, the research on the recovery of recyclable building material from construction sites remains limited. This paper addresses the optimal design issue of the construction and demolition (C& D) waste logistics network based on the features of the construction industry from the contractors’ perspective. The purpose of this paper is to provide an optimal C& D waste recycling network decision (RND) model considering the change of construction sites location over time. A multi-period and multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model was developed to minimize the cost of C& D waste disposal for contractors, and to minimize the carbon emissions from C& D waste transportation. An application study was conducted to assess the performance of the RND model. Through some sensitivity analysis experiments based on an immune genetic algorithm, the influences of environmental policies and carbon tax policy on improving the recycling rate of C& D waste and reduce the carbon emission were explored. The findings of this research suggest that: (1) a RND model with the feature of the construction industry developed in this paper can effectively optimize the C& D waste logistics network (2) government policies and laws are valid political instruments to improve the recycling rate of C& D waste (3) the carbon-tax analyses demonstrate that a carbon tax policy can effectively reduce carbon emissions.
Planning evaluation of radiotherapy for complex lung cancer cases using helical tomotherapy

Abstract: Lung cancer treatment is one of the most challenging fields in radiotherapy. The aim of the present study was to investigate what role helical tomotherapy (HT), a novel approach to the delivery of highly conformal dose distributions using intensity-modulated radiation fan beams, can play in difficult cases with large target volumes typical for many of these patients. Tomotherapy plans were developed for 15 patients with stage III inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer. While not necessarily clinically indicated, elective nodal irradiation was included for all cases to create the most challenging scenarios with large target volumes. A 2 cm margin was used around the gross tumour volume (GTV) to generate primary planning target volume (PTV2) and 1 cm margin around elective nodes for secondary planning target volume (PTV1) resulting in PTV1 volumes larger than 1000 cm3 in 13 of the 15 patients. Tomotherapy plans were created using an inverse treatment planning system (TomoTherapy Inc.) based on superposition/convolution dose calculation for a fan beam thickness of 25 mm and a pitch factor between 0.3 and 0.8. For comparison, plans were created using an intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) approach planned on a commercial treatment planning system (TheraplanPlus, Nucletron). Tomotherapy delivery times for the large target volumes were estimated to be between 4 and 19 min. Using a prescribed dose of 60 Gy to PTV2 and 46 Gy to PTV1, the mean lung dose was 23.8+/-4.6 Gy. A 'dose quality factor' was introduced to correlate the plan outcome with patient specific parameters. A good correlation was found between the quality of the HT plans and the IMRT plans with HT being slightly better in most cases. The overlap between lung and PTV was found to be a good indicator of plan quality for HT. The mean lung dose was found to increase by approximately 0.9 Gy per percent overlap volume. Helical tomotherapy planning resulted in highly conformal dose distributions. It allowed easy achievement of two different dose levels in the target simultaneously. As the overlap between PTV and lung volume is a major predictor of mean lung dose, future work will be directed to control of margins. Work is underway to investigate the possibility of breath-hold techniques for tomotherapy delivery to facilitate this aim.
Stakeholder relationships in off-site construction: a systematic literature review

Abstract: This paper aims to report a comprehensive analysis of literature on stakeholder relationships towards identifying patterns of relationships within the off-site construction context. Key scholarly databases were accessed and after a filtering process, 74 relevant papers were retrieved for analysis. The papers were analysed using qualitative content analysis and scientometric techniques through the application of software Leximancer and VOSviewer. Research synthesis methods used in the present study generate compatible results. Through text mining analysis, the key themes identified in the off-site construction stakeholder relationships literature included “collaboration”, “building information modelling”, “social network analysis”, supply chain. As a finding by scientometric analysis, collaboration, BIM, supply chain management, housing and social network analysis were the most frequently entered keywords context of off-site construction. Regarding authorship pattern, the whole network of collaboration was fragmented into multiple isolated clusters, implying that the authors had tendency to cooperate in small groups. The paper can bring together an important area of research not previously studied in detail. It will primarily assist academics in the first instance however, the research leads to important findings that will ultimately assist policymakers and practitioners better understand factors affecting stakeholder relationships and in particular network thinking and collaborative mind-sets. The review contributes a needed systematic and theoretical foundation for future stakeholder relationship studies and practices in off-site construction sector. It provides the basis for future studies and is a seminal analysis of stakeholder management and off-site construction. The scientometric methodology offers scholars a different approach to analysing and visualising literature reviews.

Abstract: Due to the dynamic and complex nature of the construction industry, construction workers are often exposed to a range of stressors which are causative factors for mental health problems. Simultaneously, intercultural contact between workers in a multicultural working environment may aggravate mental health issues. A better understanding of stressors can contribute to the development of targeted measures for mental health prevention and promotion. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the correlation between stressors and mental health for construction workers in a culturally erse working environment. Data were collected using questionnaires from 252 construction workers in Australia. The Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyse the collected data. The results revealed the significant correlations between stressors and mental health outcomes and indicated the most significant stressors from work, personal and cultural domains. The findings provide valuable insights for practitioners and policymakers on the development of mental health interventions for construction workforce in a multicultural context. Researchers could also benefit from an in-depth comprehension on the causative factors of psychological issues in the construction industry.

Abstract: The high rates of fatalities and injuries in the construction industry highlight the importance of work health and safety (WHS). Building information modelling (BIM) could significantly improve WHS management in construction, but integration has been limited. The chapter explores the application of BIM for WHS management and the rationale for market leaders' role to catalyse a BIM-enabled WHS management ecosystem through procurement strategies and tendering proficiency. An international comparative analysis of BIM WHS is presented along with a BIM drivers and barriers critique, including a clustering into seven areas of market, perceptions and attitudes, leadership, supply chain integration and collaborative practice, procurement strategies and tendering proficiency, decision tools, and technical functionality. A focussed decision framework is outlined. The findings provide insights for researchers and practitioners to understand how a BIM-enabled WHS management system can be facilitated and supported through the project lifecycle.
Asymmetric fan beams (AFB) for improvement of the craniocaudal dose distribution in helical tomotherapy delivery

Abstract: Helical tomotherapy (HT) is a novel radiotherapy technique that utilizes intensity modulated fan beams that deliver highly conformal dose distributions in a helical beam trajectory. The most significant limitation in dose delivery with a constant fan beam thickness (FBT) is the penumbra width of the dose distribution in the craniocaudal direction, which is equivalent to the FBT. We propose to employ a half-blocked fan beam at start and stop location to reduce the penumbra width by half. By opening the jaw slowly during the helical delivery until the desired FBT is achieved it is possible to create a sharper edge in the superior and inferior direction from the target. The technique was studied using a tomotherapy beam model implemented on a commercial treatment planning system (Theraplan Plus V3.0). It was demonstrated that the dose distribution delivered using a 25 mm fan beam can be improved significantly, to reduce the dose to normal structures located superiorly and inferiorly of the target. Dosimetry for this technique is straightforward down to a FBT of 15 mm and implementation should be simple as no changes in couch movement are required compared to a standard HT delivery. We conclude that the use of asymmetric collimated fan beams for the start and stop of the helical tomotherapeutic dose delivery has the potential of significantly improving the dose distribution in helical tomotherapy.

Abstract: Evidence suggests that team teaching is linked to significant tangible and intangible benefits to students, academic staff, and institutions. Partnering with industry participants is an emerging trend of team teaching in the higher education sector. Partnering with industry participants in curriculum design and unit delivery will ensure that students learn about important industry developments and help students improve their employability. It also will be helpful for academic staff to engage with the industry. Team teaching has been piloted at the School that the Authors are working at and the outcomes were very positive. In 2020, team teaching is required to be implemented in another core unit of Construction Management Undergraduate Program. By addressing the lessons learnt in implementing team teaching in the Authors’ units and being guided by previous research, a plan to implement Team Teaching in this core unit is presented in this paper. This plan will be evaluated and improved after each semester and it will be redeveloped with the industry partner every 3 years.

A Systematic Literature Review of Research on Social Procurement in the Construction and Infrastructure Sector: Barriers, Enablers, and Strategies

Abstract: In Australia, a new feature of public policy is the requirement by governments that large-scale infrastructure projects integrate social procurement practices that alter the traditional focus on balancing price and quality. Social procurement has been gradually developing in practice, but the academic literature has not kept pace. Although past research has identified some of the barriers affecting social procurement implementation in the construction industry, the nature of the barriers impeding its proliferation has not to date been systematically reviewed. This paper undertakes a review of the social procurement literature published from January 2012 to 30 June 2022, with 49 papers chosen under selective criteria. This critical review employs the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses” (PRISMA) technique to retrieve secondary data on social procurement from available peer-reviewed academic papers through three databases (Scopus, EBSCOhost, Web of Science). The literature analysis focuses on three themes: (1) barriers (2) enablers and (3) strategies to overcome the barriers. The paper finds that social procurement as a field of practice is evolving and expanding, but its role in contributing to social value creation remains an under-theorised concept. Recommendations for practice and future research are identified, including the need to measure the real-world impacts of policy.

Abstract: Helical tomotherapy (HT) combines a rotating intensity modulated fan beam with integrated CT imaging for high precision radiotherapy. HT plans for 12 patients with small brain tumours were compared with five other radiotherapy techniques. Proton techniques gave overall the best results, while HT was shown to produce better target dose uniformity (average SD=1.3%) and kept irradiation of organs at risk as good as other photon methods.

Abstract: While Off-site construction has emerged recently, its benefits have long been proved worldwide. Many hold that Off-site construction is re-structuring the industry, its supply chain and setting supplementary standards. Although stakeholder theory is prevailing in project management research, there is still a lack of in-depth research upon patterns of interrelationship and communication among Off-site construction stakeholders. Given that in Off-site construction project-based organisations are multi-level structures, stakeholders interact with each other not only within-level but also cross-level. To facilitate the adoption and diffusion of Off-site construction, there is a need to address patterns and find out the optimal mechanism for promoting inter-collaboration. Social Network Analysis is presented as a holistic approach to meet that need in a more quantitative and unambiguous way. Based on a critique of Off-site construction literature and Social Network Analysis theory, a conceptual framework is also proposed for Off-site construction stakeholder research themes and corresponding methodology. The aim of this paper is to contribute to a sound theoretical foundation for the development of a social network model and the understanding of the complex of connection and relationship among Off-site construction stakeholders.
