Modelling the Crystallization Reactions of Amorphous Precursors in Fe₃B/Nd₂Fe₁₄B Nanocomposite Magnets

Abstract: A physically-based model is proposed for the competitive precipitation of multiple phases (bcc-Fe, Fe3B, Nd2Fe14B, Nd2Fe23B3, NdFe4B4 and Fe2B) from an amorphous Fe-B-Nd matrix. These materials form the basis of a class of nanocomposite hard magnets. The nucleation and growth of the different phases are calculated using computational thermodynamics and kinetics tools with input from a thermodynamic assessment of this system. In some alloy compositions, the phase formation sequence during crystallization shows significant sensitivity to the heating-rate. Model calculations illustrate that this effect cannot be explained by homogeneous nucleation and growth of the phases. The possible role of heterogeneous nucleation is briefly discussed.

Abstract: While materials with a 1st order Curie transition (TC) are known for the magnetic cooling effect due to the reversibility of their large entropy change, they also have a great potential as a candidate material for induction heating where a large loss power is required under a limited alternating magnetic field. We have carried out a proof-of-concept study on the induction heating effect in 1st order ferromagnetic materials where the temperature is self-regulated at TC. LaFe11.57Si1.43H1.75, a well-known magnetocaloric material, was employed in this study because TC of this compound (319 K) resides in the ideal temperature range for hyperthermia treatment of cancerous cells. It is found that the hysteresis loss of LaFe11.57Si1.43H1.75 increases dramatically near TC due to the magnetic phase coexistence associated with the 1st order magnetic transition. The spontaneous magnetization (Ms) shows a very abrupt decrease from 110 Am2kg−1 at 316 K to zero at 319 K. This large Ms immediately below TC along with the enhanced irreversibility of the hysteresis curve result in a specific absorption rate as large as 0.5 kWg−1 under a field of 8.8 kAm−1 at 279 kHz. This value is nearly an order of magnitude larger than that observed under the same condition for conventional iron oxide-based materials. Moreover, the large heating effect is self-regulated at the 1st order TC (319 K). This proof-of-concept study shows that the extraordinary heating effect near the 1st order Curie point opens up a novel alloy design strategy for large, self-regulated induction heating.

Abstract: We demonstrate a magnetocaloric ferrofluid based on a gadolinium saturated liquid metal matrix, using a gallium-based liquid metal alloy as the solvent and suspension medium. The material is liquid at room temperature, while exhibiting spontaneous magnetization and a large magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic properties were attributed to the formation of gadolinium nanoparticles suspended within the liquid gallium alloy, which acts as a reaction solvent during the nanoparticle synthesis. High nanoparticle weight fractions exceeding 2% could be suspended within the liquid metal matrix. The liquid metal ferrofluid shows promise for magnetocaloric cooling due to its high thermal conductivity and its liquid nature. Magnetic and thermoanalytic characterizations reveal that the developed material remains liquid within the temperature window required for domestic refrigeration purposes, which enables future fluidic magnetocaloric devices. Additionally, the observed formation of nanometer-sized metallic particles within the supersaturated liquid metal solution has general implications for chemical synthesis and provides a new synthetic pathway toward metallic nanoparticles based on highly reactive rare earth metals.

Fast deswelling of nanocomposite polymer hydrogels via magnetic field-induced heating for emerging FO desalination

Abstract: Freshwater shortage is one of the most pressing global issues. Forward osmosis (FO) desalination technology is emerging for freshwater production from saline water, which is potentially more energy-efficient than the current reverse osmosis process. However, the lack of a suitable draw solute is the major hurdle for commercial implementation of the FO desalination technology. We have previously reported that thermoresponsive hydrogels can be used as the draw agent for a FO process, and this new hydrogel-driven FO process holds promise for further development for practical application. In the present work, magnetic field-induced heating is explored for the purpose of developing a more effective way to recover water from swollen hydrogel draw agents. The composite hydrogel particles are prepared by copolymerization of sodium acrylate and N-isopropylacrylamide in the presence of magnetic nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3, <50 nm). The results indicate that the magnetic heating is an effective and rapid method for dewatering of hydrogels by generating the heat more uniformly throughout the draw agent particles, and thus, a dense skin layer commonly formed via conventional heating from the outside of the particle is minimized. The FO dewatering performance is affected by the loading of magnetic nanoparticles and magnetic field intensity. Significantly enhanced liquid water recovery (53%) is achieved under magnetic heating, as opposed to only around 7% liquid water recovery obtained via convection heating. Our study shows that the magnetic heating is an attractive alternative stimulus for the extraction of highly desirable liquid water from the draw agent in the polymer hydrogel-driven forward osmosis process.

Fabrication, characterization and magnetic properties of Na-doped ZnO nanorods

Abstract: Na-doped ZnO nanorods have been fabricated through a hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses indicate that the d spacing of ZnO increases with increasing doping concentration, suggesting the effective incorporation of dopant Na in the s les. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements indicate that there are shallow donors in pure ZnO s les and the shallow donors are strongly prohibited by Na doping. In addition, the resonance at g = 2.005 suggests the formation of Zn vacancies. Magnetic measurements indicate that pure ZnO is paramagnetic and Na doping leads to ferromagnetism at room temperature. Moreover, 0.5% Na-doped ZnO nanorods exhibits the largest saturation magnetization.

Particle size dependence of heating power in MgFe2O4 nanoparticles for hyperthermia therapy application

Abstract: Magnetic nanoparticles with narrow size distributions have successfully been synthesized by an ultrasonic assisted co-precipitation method. The effects of particle size on magnetic properties, heat generation by AC fields, and the cell cytotoxicity were investigated for MgFe2O4 nanoparticles with mean diameters varying from 7 ± 0.5 nm to 29 ± 1 nm. The critical size for superparamagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition (DS→F) of MgFe2O4 was determined to be about 13 ± 0.5 nm at 300 K. The specific absorption rate (SAR) of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles was strongly size dependent it showed a maximum value of 19 W/g when the particle size was 10 ± 0.5 nm at which the Néel and Brownian relaxations are the major cause of heating. The SAR value was suppressed dramatically by 46% with increasing particle size from 10 ± 0.5 nm to 13 ± 0.5 nm, where Néel relaxation slows down and SAR results primarily from Brownian relaxation loss. A further reduction in SAR value was evident when the size was increased from 13 ± 0.5 nm to 16 ± 1 nm, where the superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic transition occurs. However, SAR showed a tendency to increase with particle size again above 16 ± 1 nm where hysteresis loss becomes the dominant mechanism of heat generation. The particle size dependence of SAR in the superparamagnetic region was well described by considering the effective relaxation time estimated based on a log-normal size distribution. The clear size dependence of SAR is attributable to the high degree of monodispersity of particles synthesized here. The high SAR value of water-based MgFe2O4 magnetic suspension combined with low cell cytotoxicity suggests a great potential of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles for magnetic hyperthermia therapy applications.

Low temperature texture development in Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe nanocomposite magnets via equal channel angular pressing

Abstract: While suitable texture has been developed in Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe nanocomposites via thermomechanical processing methods such as die upsetting by incorporating low melting point eutectic Nd-Cu additives, significant grain coarsening occurs during this process due to the high temperature and long timescales involved, resulting in a loss of exchange coupling. Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is a severe plastic deformation technique which has been successfully used to produce a suitable texture in single-phase Nd2Fe14B at temperatures on the order of 500°C while preserving grain sizes on the order of 20-30nm. We investigate the development of texture in a commercial Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe nanocomposite alloy with added Nd90Cu10 produced via ECAP and then characterise it using texture x-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. It is found that initial texture can be developed in this nanocomposite system at T = 520°C via ECAP. The average grain size of Nd2Fe14B as measured via X-ray diffraction after ECAP remains below 50nm with a developed texture. The effect of varying the amount of Nd90Cu10 additive is also investigated. It is found that with decreasing Nd90Cu10, the degree of texture is reduced while the volume fraction of α-Fe increases. This work demonstrates the development of texture in nanocomposite Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe with Nd-Cu additives whilst maintaining a grain size of approximately 50nm.

Effect of direct-current magnetic field on the specific absorption rate of metamagnetic CoMnSi: A potential approach to switchable hyperthermia therapy

Abstract: Materials with 1st order antiferromagnetic (AFM) to high-magnetization (MM) phase transition known for their inverse magnetocaloric effect, abrupt rise in magnetization and magnetoelastic coupling, are promising for application in combined simultaneous diagnosis and targeted cancer therapy. A therapy that combines alternating-current (ac) and direct-current (dc) magnetic fields for simultaneous magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), using same magnetic particles for heating and as contrast agents. We report a proof-of-concept study on the induction heating ability of 1st order metamagnetic material with moderate specific absorption rates (SAR) and no tendency for agglomeration, for potential MHT and MRI cancer therapy. CoMnSi, a metamagnetic antiferromagnet (MM) was used in this study because of its desirable ability to rapidly switch from a low to high magnetization state in an applied dc bias field condition without particle agglomeration on field removal. The results showed that the magnetization switched from & 20 Am2kg-1 at 0.75 T to about 53.31 Am2kg-1 at 1.0 T applied dc field, a field large enough for magnetic resonance imaging. An SAR value of 10.7 Wg-1 was obtained under an ac field of 31.0 kAm-1 at 212.0 kHz. When combined with a dc bias field of 1.0 T, SAR values of 9.83 Wg-1 and 6.65 Wg-1 were obtained in the directions 45° and 90° away from the dc bias field direction respectively. These SAR values obtained from CoMnSi particles in the presence of simultaneous ac and dc magnetic field bias are in comparison, at least 25 times greater than those obtained from 2nd order magnetic phase transition Fe3O4 suspension. It is observed that Fe3O4 particles showed large suppression of SAR, and agglomeration under the same experimental conditions. This study shows the great potential of 1st order phase transition metamagnets for simultaneous MHT and MRI cancer therapy using MRI equipment.
