Computer simulations of particle-bubble interactions and particle sliding using Discrete Element Method

Abstract: Three dimensional Discrete Element Method (DEM) computer simulations have been carried out to analyse the kinetics of collision of multiple particles against a stationary bubble and the sliding of the particles over the bubble surface. This is the first time that a computational analysis of the sliding time and particle packing arrangements of multiple particles on the surface of a bubble has been carried out. The collision kinetics of monodisperse (33 μm in radius) and polydisperse (12-33 μm in radius) particle systems have been analysed in terms of the time taken by 10%, 50% and 100% of the particles to collide against the bubble. The dependencies of these collision times on the strength of hydrophobic interactions follow relationships close to power laws. However, minimal sensitivity of the collision times to particle size was found when linear and square relationships of the hydrophobic force with particles radius were considered. The sliding time for single particles has corroborated published theoretical expressions. Finally, a good qualitative comparison with experiments has been observed with respect to the particle packing at the bottom of the bubble after sliding demonstrating the usefulness of computer simulations in the studies of particle-bubble systems.

Abstract: The control of the physicochemical properties of silica particles is of paramount importance to achieve full functionality in specific applications. A novel facile method of silica particle synthesis, requiring only two reactants, was developed. Control of the surface charge of these newly synthesized silica particles was achieved via the rapid electrostatic adsorption and acidic desorption of the branched, biomimetic polymer, polyethylenimine (PEI). Successful adsorption/desorption of PEI was supported by ATR-FTIR spectra, an adsorption isotherm, and ζ-potential curves. PEI adsorption above a threshold PEI concentration was determined to categorically change the topography of the silica particles' ζ-potential curve. The results from our study convey a rapid, reversible, and reliable method of silica particle surface charge control. This may be of particular use in tailoring surface interactions of silica or silica-coated particles for applications in drug delivery, biomedical technologies, catalysis, and coatings.

Abstract: Colorado potato beetle, CPB (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say), is one of the most important pests of the potato globally. Larvae and adults can cause complete defoliation of potato plant leaves and can lead to a large yield loss. The insect has been successfully suppressed by insecticides however, over time, has developed resistance to insecticides from various chemical groups, and its once successful control has diminished. The number of available active chemical control substances is decreasing with the process of testing, and registering new products on the market are time-consuming and expensive, with the possibility of resistance ever present. All of these concerns have led to the search for new methods to control CPB and efficient tools to assist with the detection of resistant variants and monitoring of resistant populations. Current strategies that may aid in slowing resistance include gene silencing by RNA interference (RNAi). RNAi, besides providing an efficient tool for gene functional studies, represents a safe, efficient, and eco-friendly strategy for CPB control. Genetically modified (GM) crops that produce the toxins of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have many advantages over agro-technical, mechanical, biological, and chemical measures. However, pest resistance that may occur and public acceptance of GM modified food crops are the main problems associated with Bt crops. Recent developments in the speed, cost, and accuracy of next generation sequencing are revolutionizing the discovery of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and field of population genomics. There is a need for effective resistance monitoring programs that are capable of the early detection of resistance and successful implementation of integrated resistance management (IRM). The main focus of this review is on new technologies for CPB control (RNAi) and tools (SNPs) for detection of resistant CPB populations.

Abstract: When characterizing fine particles experimentally, it is a common practice to only measure the normal stiffness between particles and to assume that it is equal to the tangential stiffness. The impact of variations in the stiffness measurements upon the bulk characteristics of particulate systems remains unclear. Using computer simulations, the authors show that the variations in the contact stiffness ratio affect the micromechanical characteristics of nonspherical particulate systems more dominantly than the spherical particulate systems. Hence, attention must be paid to measure both the normal and tangential contact stiffnesses when characterizing nonspherical fine particulates to estimate their assembly characteristics.

Abstract: This work presents the synthesis and characterization of hollow silica particles that were fabricated with the asymmetric methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) as the only silica precursor, by using a modified SBA-15 synthesis method, for the first time. The MTMS concentration was varied in the range from 0.300 to 0.900 M. The hollow silica nanoparticulate material characteristics were compared to those of SBA-15 silica made by using tetraethyl orthosilicate. The hollow silica nanoparticle aggregates (named as MS-Asym) showed varied nanoparticle shapes from irregular to close to spherical, with multiple hollow pores as characterized by SEM and TEM. This result is very different from SBA-15, which has a ropelike shape. X-ray diffraction data showed that the MS-Asym silica s les were disordered compared to the ordered SBA-15. Nitrogen sorption measurements suggested that the SBA-15 is mainly mesoporous, whereas MS-Asym has a combined microporous and mesoporous structure. Furthermore, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectra infer a different polymerization mechanism occurs for MS-Asym compared to that of SBA-15 silica.
