Abstract: A highly active alternative to Pt electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is the cathode-electrode reaction of fuel cells, is sought for higher fuel-cell performance. Our theoretical modelling reveals that B-doped Pd (Pd-B) weakens the absorption of ORR intermediates with nearly optimal binding energy by lowering the barrier associated with O2 dissociation, suggesting Pd-B should be highly active for ORR. In fact, Pd-B, facile synthesized by an electroless deposition process, exhibits 2.2 times and 8.8 times higher specific activity and 14 times and 35 times less costly than commercial pure Pd and Pt catalysts, respectively. Another computational result is that the surface core level of Pd is negatively shifted by B doping, as confirmed by XPS, and implies that filling the density of states related to the anti-bonding of oxygen to Pd surfaces with excess electrons from B doping, weakens the O bonding to Pd and boosts the catalytic activity.

Abstract: Herein, we report a smart coating with autonomous self-healing and self-reporting functions by simple integration of one-component microcapsules into the matrix without external intervention. The microcapsules containing hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) solution of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) were synthesized, and their properties, such as their composition, thermal stability, morphology, and damage-indicating ability, were investigated systematically. The AIEgen/HDI microcapsule-embedded coatings display adaptive self-repair of scratches and simultaneous high-contrast indication of the healed damage. Two commercialized AIEgens, tetraphenylethylene (TPE) and its derivative with dimethoxyl and benzylidene-methyloxazolone moieties (DM-TPE-BMO), were utilized as ex les to demonstrate the feasibility of this concept in erse polymer matrixes (including blue autofluorescent matrixes). It was found that the content of AIEgens can even be lowered to 0.05 wt %. This facile, economical, and feasible strategy toward the dual functions of self-repairing and self-sensing provides a new route for enhancing the longevity and reliability of polymer coatings, which is appealing and of great importance in practical applications.

Abstract: We report on the emerging and admixture of Frenkel and charge transfer (CT) excitons near the absorption onset in pentacene single crystals. Using high energy-resolution spectroscopic generalized ellipsometry with in-plane polarization dependence, the excitonic nature of three lowest lying excitations is discussed. Their distinct polarization dependence strongly indicates the presence of both Frenkel and CT types of excitons near the excitation onset. In particular, the peculiar polarization behavior of the second excitation can only be rationalized by taking into account the inherent CT transition dipole moment. This observation has important implications for the pentacene-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: This paper reports on highly active and stable amorphous Pd nanoparticle electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. The amorphous catalysts were synthesized by a remarkably facile and quick electroless deposition process newly developed in this study (process time <5 min). An electrode substrate (glassy carbon, carbon cloth) was sequentially dipped for 10 s into two separate solutions of a reducing agent (sodium hypophosphite (NaH2PO2)) and Pd ions to deposit amorphous Pd nanoparticles containing phosphorus (Pd-P). By repeating the deposition cycles, the specific and mass activities of the Pd nanoparticles can be actively tuned. Owing to the nanoscale amorphous nature, the obtained Pd-P nanoparticle electrocatalysts exhibited superior specific and mass activities compared with crystalline Pd nanoparticles synthesized by another reducing agent (N2H4) and commercial Pt-loaded carbon (Pt/C) and Pd-loaded carbon (Pd/C). The specific and mass activities of the amorphous Pd-P nanoparticles were over 4.5 times and 2.6 times higher than previously reported values of Pd and Pt catalysts.

Abstract: By use of optical pump-probe measurement, we study the relaxation dynamics of a multiferroic-ferromagnetic TbMnO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 bilayer. The relaxation dynamics of both layers are well separated in time allowing us to investigate the magnetic coupling across the bilayer. We observe that the relaxation dynamics of the in idual layers in the bilayer s le are the result of the interplay between the intrinsic magnetic order and the induced interfacial effect. Our data suggest the existence of induced ferromagnetic order in the TbMnO3 layer and antiferromagnetic order in the La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 layer.

Abstract: Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of annelated benzotriazole based polymers with variable bandgap. Benzobistriazole monomers reported by us previously were desymmetrized using partial reduction ring opening followed by ring closure to produce a wide range of annelated benzotriazole based monomers. These monomers were co-polymerized with a fluorene moiety to give polymers with bandgaps ranging from 1.16 to 2.41 eV.
