Abstract: Intestinal gases are currently used for the diagnosis of disorders including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and carbohydrate malabsorption. To compare the performance of measuring hydrogen production within the gut directly with the telemetric gas-sensing capsule with that of indirect measurement through breath testing. Using standard breath testing protocols, the capsules and breath tests were simultaneously evaluated in a single-blinded trial in 12 healthy subjects. Eight received a single dose of 1.25-40 g inulin and four 20 or 40 g glucose. Safety and reliability of the capsules were also assessed. There were no reported adverse events. All capsules were retrieved and operated without failure. Capsule measurements were in agreement with breath test measurements in magnitude but not in timing minimal hydrogen production was observed after glucose ingestion and capsule measurements correlated with breath hydrogen after ingestion of 40 g inulin. A dose-dependent increase in concentration of hydrogen was observed from the capsule following ingestion of inulin as low as 1.25 g compared with >10 g for breath measurements. Specifically, the capsule measured >3000 times higher concentrations of hydrogen compared to breath tests, resulting in a signal-to-noise ratio of 23.4 for the capsule compared to 4.2 for the breath test. The capsule showed high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio in measuring luminal hydrogen concentrations, provided information on the site of intestinal gas production, and demonstrated safety and reliability. The capsule has potential for improving diagnostic precision for disorders such as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Abstract: We present the thermal analysis of liquid containing Al(2)O(3) nanoparticles in a microfluidic platform using an infrared camera. The small dimensions of the microchannel along with the low flow rates (less than 120 μl min(-1)) provide very low Reynolds numbers of less than 17.5, reflecting practical parameters for a microfluidic cooling platform. The heat analysis of nanofluids has never been investigated in such a regime, due to the deficiencies of conventional thermal measurement systems. The infrared camera allows non-contact, three dimensional and high resolution capability for temperature profiling. The system was studied at different w/w concentrations of thermally conductive Al(2)O(3) nanoparticles and the experiments were in excellent agreement with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations.

Synthesis of nanometre-thick MoO3sheets

Abstract: The formation of MoO(3) sheets of nanoscale thickness is described. They are made from several fundamental sheets of orthorhombic alpha-MoO(3), which can be processed in large quantities via a low cost synthesis route that combines thermal evaporation and mechanical exfoliation. These fundamental sheets consist of double-layers of linked distorted MoO(6) octahedra. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements show that the minimum resolvable thickness of these sheets is 1.4 nm which is equivalent to the thickness of two double-layers within one unit cell of the alpha-MoO(3) crystal.

Soft Liquid Metal Infused Conductive Sponges

Abstract: Liquid metal droplets of gallium (Ga) and Ga‐based alloys are traditionally incorporated as deformable additives into soft elastomers to make them conductive. However, such a strategy has not been implemented to develop conductive sponges with real sponge‐like characteristics. Herein, polyurethane‐based sponges with Ga microdroplets embedded inside the polyurethane walls are developed. The liquid phase (at 45 °C) and solid phase (at room temperature) transition of the Ga fillers shows the temperature‐dependent functional variations in the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties on the prepared composite sponges, which are investigated in detail. Unlike elastomers, the sponge possesses excellent elastic recovery, at ≈90%, and conductivity durability without sacrificing structural integrity. The reversible change of resistivity range is remarkable. When the Ga fillers account for 18% of the total sponge volume, the electrical resistivity varies from infinite values (insulator) under no applied pressure to 39.0 Ω m for the solid phase and 3.8 Ω m for the liquid phase under 386.8 kPa. New opportunities in developing flexible electrically conductive composite sponges with tunable mechanical and electrical properties that can be implemented for a variety of future applications are proposed.

Cytokines: From Clinical Significance to Quantification

Abstract: Cytokines are critical mediators that oversee and regulate immune and inflammatory responses via complex networks and serve as biomarkers for many diseases. Quantification of cytokines has significant value in both clinical medicine and biology as the levels provide insights into physiological and pathological processes and can be used to aid diagnosis and treatment. Cytokines and their clinical significance are introduced from the perspective of their pro‐ and anti‐inflammatory effects. Factors affecting cytokines quantification in biological fluids, native levels in different body fluids, s le processing and storage conditions, sensitivity to freeze‐thaw, and soluble cytokine receptors are discussed. In addition, recent advances in in vitro and in vivo assays, biosensors based on different signal outputs and intracellular to extracellular protein expression are summarized. Various quantification platforms for high‐sensitivity and reliable measurement of cytokines in different scenarios are discussed, and commercially available cytokine assays are compared. A discussion of challenges in the development and advancement of technologies for cytokine quantification that aim to achieve real‐time multiplex cytokine analysis for point‐of‐care situations applicable for both biomedical research and clinical practice are discussed.

Abstract: Heavy metal ions contamination is an ever‐growing threat to human health and ecosystems. Analytic sensing of heavy metal ions is a prerequisite step toward addressing this challenge. Electroanalytical technique is an effective and convenient way to detect heavy metal ions. Especially, stripping voltammetry techniques have been utilized for sensing metal ions at trace levels in different s le matrices. The choice of the working electrode materials plays a decisive role in the precision and sensitivity of stripping voltammetry. Post‐transition metals (including elements in group 12) are elements with low melting points, demonstrating unique properties including amalgamation with heavy metal ions that enhance the performance of stripping voltammetry during the pre‐concentration step, which make them particularly suitable for heavy metal ion sensing. Here, for better understanding the features and advantages of post‐transition metals in stripping voltammetry, eight classes of working electrodes based on zinc (Zn), mercury (Hg), gallium (Ga), indium (In), tin (Sn), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), and bismuth (Bi), are reviewed, with their efficiency and effectiveness compared and recent progresses discussed. Additionally, liquid metal electrodes based on post‐transition metals and alloys are also presented. This review provides viable directions for future development of heavy metal ion sensors based on post‐transition metals.

Molybdenum Oxides – From Fundamentals to Functionality

Abstract: The properties and applications of molybdenum oxides are reviewed in depth. Molybdenum is found in various oxide stoichiometries, which have been employed for different high-value research and commercial applications. The great chemical and physical characteristics of molybdenum oxides make them versatile and highly tunable for incorporation in optical, electronic, catalytic, bio, and energy systems. Variations in the oxidation states allow manipulation of the crystal structure, morphology, oxygen vacancies, and dopants, to control and engineer electronic states. Despite this overwhelming functionality and potential, a definitive resource on molybdenum oxide is still unavailable. The aim here is to provide such a resource, while presenting an insightful outlook into future prospective applications for molybdenum oxides.

Intra-ruminal gas-sensing in real time: A proof-of-concept

Abstract: An intra-rumen (IR) gas-sensing system incorporating commercially available gas sensors [methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2)] and a wireless sensor network was developed to measure rumen gas concentrations of grazing animals in real-time. The IR gas-sensing devices also measure temperature and pressure near the sensors and the design isolates the electronics and battery from exposure to gases. Membranes were developed that allow the desired gases to diffuse through to the sensors while excluding corrosive hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Performance of the prototype IR devices was tested in cattle and sheep fed once a day as a proof-of-concept. Concentrations of expired gases from respiration chambers were compared with the concentrations obtained by the IR gas-sensing device within the rumen digesta. Direct measurements of rumen gas cap s les demonstrate a similar gas profile to that observed with the IR gas-sensing device with the ratio of CO2 : CH4 peaking shortly after feeding and CO2 levels nearly 2.5 times greater than those of CH4. The gas ratio then declines over time to a point when at 23 h post-feeding the concentration of CH4 exceeds that of CO2. The H2 gas concentration in the rumen varied throughout the day reaching maximum levels of 2500 ppm after feeding and declining to 250 ppm over the day. Although the IR device was able to detect H2 in the rumen throughout the entire day, expired H2 was often below the limits of detection in the respiration chamber. Current work is focussed on extending the longevity of the devices in the rumen so that replicated trials can be performed on the accuracy and precision of the measurements.
Electrochemical control of photoluminescence in two-dimensional MoS 2 nanoflakes

Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors offer unique electronic and optical properties, which are significantly different from their bulk counterparts. It is known that the electronic structure of 2D MoS2, which is the most popular member of the family, depends on the number of layers. Its electronic structure alters dramatically at near atomically thin morphologies, producing strong photoluminescence (PL). Developing processes for controlling the 2D MoS2 PL is essential to efficiently harness many of its optical capabilities. So far, it has been shown that this PL can be electrically or mechanically gated. Here, we introduce an electrochemical approach to actively control the PL of liquid-phase-exfoliated 2D MoS2 nanoflakes by manipulating the amount of intercalated ions including Li(+), Na(+), and K(+) into and out of the 2D crystal structure. These ions are selected as they are crucial components in many bioprocesses. We show that this controlled intercalation allows for large PL modulations. The introduced electrochemically controlled PL will find significant applications in future chemical and bio-optical sensors as well as optical modulators/switches.

Novel tuneable optical elements based on nanoparticle suspensions in microfluidics

Abstract: This work demonstrates the application of dielectrophoretic (DEP) control of silica nanoparticles to form tuneable optical elements within a microfluidic system. The implementation consisted of a microfluidic channel with an array of curved microelectrodes along its base. Various DEP conditions were investigated at alternating current voltage litudes, flow rates and frequencies from 5 to 15 V, 2 to 10 microL/min and 0 to 20 MHz, respectively. The fluid channel was filled with deionized water suspending silica particles with diameters of 230 and 450 nm. Experiments were conducted to demonstrate DEP concentration and deflection of the particles and the impact of these particles distributions on the optical transmission through the fluid channel. Both confinement and scattering of the light were observed depending on the particle dimensions and the parameters of the DEP excitation. The results of this investigation illustrate the feasibility of DEP control in an optofluidic system and represent a significant step toward the dynamic formation of electrically controlled liquid optical waveguides.

Abstract: In research on alternative photoanode materials for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), there is rarely any report on WO(3), probably due to its acidic surface and more positive (vs NHE) conduction band edge position compared to TiO(2) and ZnO. For the first time, dye-sensitized solar cells based on porous WO(3) nanoparticle films were successfully fabricated with efficiency of up to 0.75%. The multicrystalline structure of WO(3) was examined by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. It was found that significant performance enhancement can be obtained from treating the WO(3) nanoparticle film with TiCl(4) the TiCl(4)-treated WO(3) DSCs were recorded with efficiency reaching 1.46%.

Particle trapping using dielectrophoretically patterned carbon nanotubes

Abstract: This study presents the dielectrophoretic (DEP) assembly of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) between curved microelectrodes for the purpose of trapping polystyrene microparticles within a microfluidic system. Under normal conditions, polystyrene particles exhibit negative DEP behaviour and are repelled from microelectrodes. Interestingly, the addition of MWCNTs to the system alters this situation in two ways: first, they coat the surface of particles and change their dielectric properties to exhibit positive DEP behaviour second, the assembled MWCNTs are highly conductive and after the deposition serve as extensions to the microelectrodes. They establish an array of nanoelectrodes that initiates from the edge of microelectrodes and grow along the electric field lines. These nanoelectrodes can effectively trap the MWCNT-coated particles, since they cover a large portion of the microchannel bottom surface and also create a much stronger electric field than the primary microelectrodes as confirmed by our numerical simulations. We will show that the presence of MWCNT significantly changes performance of the system, which is investigated by trapping s le polystyrene particles with plain, COOH and goat anti-mouse IgG surfaces.

Abstract: Raman microscopy systems are becoming increasingly widespread and accessible for characterising chemical species. Microfluidic systems are also progressively finding their way into real world applications. Therefore, it is anticipated that the integration of Raman systems with microfluidics will become increasingly attractive and practical. This review aims to provide an overview of Raman microscopy-microfluidics integrated systems for researchers who are actively interested in utilising these tools. The fundamental principles and application strengths of Raman microscopy are discussed in the context of microfluidics. Various configurations of microfluidics that incorporate Raman microscopy methods are presented, with applications highlighted. Data analysis methods are discussed, with a focus on assisting the interpretation of Raman-microfluidics data from complex s les. Finally, possible future directions of Raman-microfluidic systems are presented.

Mechanistic Observation of Interactions between Macrophages and Inorganic Particles with Different Densities

Abstract: Many different types of inorganic materials are processed into nano/microparticles for medical utilization. The impact of selected key characteristics of these particles, including size, shape, and surface chemistries, on biological systems, is frequently studied in clinical contexts. However, one of the most important basic characteristics of these particles, their density, is yet to be investigated. When the particles are designed for drug delivery, highly mobile macrophages are the major participants in cellular levels that process them in vivo. As such, it is essential to understand the impact of particles’ densities on the mobility of macrophages. Here, inorganic particles with different densities are applied, and their interactions with macrophages studied. A set of these particles are incubated with the macrophages and the outcomes are explored by optical microscopy. This microscopic view provides the understanding of the mechanistic interactions between particles of different densities and macrophages to conclude that the particles’ density can affect the migratory behaviors of macrophages: the higher the density of particles engulfed inside the macrophages, the less mobile the macrophages become. This work is a strong reminder that the density of particles cannot be neglected when they are designed to be utilized in biological applications.

Abstract: The biological and clinical significance of the human gut microbiome is currently attracting worldwide attention. While rRNA and DNA technologies led to a quantum leap in our understanding of the numbers and types of gut microorganisms, much less is known about these microorganisms' activity in situ and in real time. Accurately measuring their byproducts, including intestinal gases, may offer unique biomarkers for specific gut microbiota, accelerating our understanding of the relationships among intestinal gases, the metabolic activity of the gut microbiome, and human health states. Here we present two novel techniques, namely in vitro fermentation and gas capsule systems, for measuring and assessing selected gas species. We discuss new developments with these technologies and the methods of their implementation and provide an overall review of their operation.

Abstract: Bulk liquid metals have prospective applications as soft and fluid electrical and thermal conductors in electronic and optical devices, composites, microfluidics, robotics, and metallurgy with unique opportunities for processing, chemistry, and function. Yet liquid metals' great potential in nanotechnology remains in its infancy. Although work to date focuses primarily on Ga, Hg, and their alloys, to expand the field, we define "liquid metals" as metals and alloys with melting points (mp) up to 330 °C, readily accessible and processable even using household kitchen appliances. Such a definition encompasses a family of metals-including the majority of post-transition metals and Zn group elements (excluding Zn itself)-with remarkable versatility in chemistry, physics, and engineering. These liquid alloys can create metallic compounds of different morphologies, compositions, and properties, thereby enabling control over nanoscale phenomena. In addition, the presence of electronic and ionic "pools" within the bulk of liquid metals, as well as deviation from classical metallurgy on the surfaces of liquid metals, provides opportunities for gaining new capabilities in nanotechnology. For ex le, the bulk and surfaces of liquid metals can be used as reaction media for creating and manipulating nanomaterials, promoting reactions, or controlling crystallization of dissolved species. Gonorrhoea gone wild: rising incidence of gonorrhoea and associated risk factors among gay and bisexual men attending Australian sexual health clinics

Abstract: Background Gonorrhoea notifications continue to rise among gay and bisexual men in Australia and around the world. More information is needed on infection trends, accounting for testing and complimented by demographics and risk practices. Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was undertaken using repeat gonorrhoea testing data among gay and bisexual men from 2010 to 2017, which was extracted from a network of 47 sexual health clinics across Australia. Poisson and Cox regression analyses were used to determine temporal trends in gonorrhoea incidence rates, as well as associated demographic and behavioural factors. Results: The present analysis included 46904 gay and bisexual men. Gonorrhoea incidence at any anatomical site increased from 14.1/100 person years (PY) in 2010 to 24.6/100 PY in 2017 (P& .001), with the greatest increase in infections of the pharynx (5.6-15.9/100 PY, P& .001) and rectum (6.6–14.8/100 PY, P& .001). After adjusting for symptomatic and contact-driven presentations, the strongest predictors of infection were having more than 20 sexual partners in a year (hazard ratio (HR)=1.9, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.7–2.2), using injecting drugs (HR=1.7, 95%CI: 1.4–2.0), being HIV positive (HR=1.4, 95%CI: 1.2–1.6) and being aged less than 30 years old (HR=1.4, 95%CI: 1.2–1.6). Conclusions: Gonorrhoea has increased dramatically among gay and bisexual men in Australia. Enhanced prevention efforts, as well as more detailed, network-driven research are required to combat gonorrhoea among young men, those with HIV and those who use injecting drugs.

Abstract: We present the employment of the Keggin ion 12-phosphotungstic acid as a UV-switchable reducing agent for the decoration of Au, Ag, Pt, and Cu nanoparticles onto the surface of TiO(2) nanotubes synthesized by electrochemical anodization. The synthesized composites were studied using SEM, GADDS XRD, and EDX, and the photocatalytic activity of the composites was examined by measuring the photodegradation of the organic dye "Congo red" under simulated solar light. Decoration with metal nanoparticles was observed to enhance the activity of the photocatalytic process by upward of 100% with respect to unmodified TiO(2) nanotubes.
Liquid metal synthesis solvents for metallic crystals

Abstract: In nature, snowflake ice crystals arrange themselves into erse symmetrical six-sided structures. We show an analogy of this when zinc (Zn) dissolves and crystallizes in liquid gallium (Ga). The low-melting-temperature Ga is used as a “metallic solvent” to synthesize a range of flake-like Zn crystals. We extract these metallic crystals from the liquid metal solvent by reducing its surface tension using a combination of electrocapillary modulation and vacuum filtration. The liquid metal–grown crystals feature high morphological ersity and persistent symmetry. The concept is expanded to other single and binary metal solutes and Ga-based solvents, with the growth mechanisms elucidated through ab initio simulation of interfacial stability. This strategy offers general routes for creating highly crystalline, shape-controlled metallic or multimetallic fine structures from liquid metal solvents.

Abstract: Manipulating dielectric properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is an important consideration for flexible, low-loss device design. This paper presents a method for reducing dielectric loss (tan δ) by forming PDMS composites loaded with various concentrations of either alumina (Al2O3) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles. The structural, mechanical, and electrical properties of the composites are investigated. Theoretical mixing models were used to predict the relative permittivity (εr) of PDMS composites, and good similarity with the measured εr was observed. The incorporation of either low dielectric loss filler in the PDMS matrix (up to 50 wt. % filler loading) is shown to reduce the dielectric loss while maintaining the flexibility of the host matrix. The fillers can also control the permittivity of the composite, either increasing or decreasing relative permittivity from that of PDMS. Interestingly, a strain of ∼500% can be applied to 15 wt. % PDMS/PTFE composites, compared with ∼350% for pure PDMS.

Abstract: The nascent field of nanotechnology-enabled metallurgy has great potential. However, the role of eutectic alloys and the nature of alloy solidification in this field are still largely unknown. To demonstrate one of the promises of liquid metals in the field, we explore a model system of catalytically active Bi-Sn nano-alloys produced using a liquid-phase ultrasonication technique and investigate their phase separation, surface oxidation, and nucleation. The Bi-Sn ratio determines the grain boundary properties and the emergence of dislocations within the nano-alloys. The eutectic system gives rise to the smallest grain dimensions among all Bi-Sn ratios along with more pronounced dislocation formation within the nano-alloys. Using electrochemical CO 2 reduction and photocatalysis, we demonstrate that the structural peculiarity of the eutectic nano-alloys offers the highest catalytic activity in comparison with their non-eutectic counterparts. The fundamentals of nano-alloy formation revealed here may establish the groundwork for creating bimetallic and multimetallic nano-alloys.

Abstract: Nanoporous Nb2O5 has been previously demonstrated to be a viable electrochromic material with strong intercalation characteristics. Despite showing such promising properties, its potential for optical gas sensing applications, which involves the production of ionic species such as H(+), has yet to be explored. Nanoporous Nb2O5 can accommodate a large amount of H(+) ions in a process that results in an energy bandgap change of the material which induces an optical response. Here, we demonstrate the optical hydrogen gas (H2) sensing capability of nanoporous anodic Nb2O5 with a large surface-to-volume ratio prepared via a high temperature anodization method. The large active surface area of the film provides enhanced pathways for efficient hydrogen adsorption and dissociation, which are facilitated by a thin layer of Pt catalyst. We show that the process of H2 sensing causes optical modulations that are investigated in terms of response magnitudes and dynamics. The optical modulations induced by the intercalation process and sensing properties of nanoporous anodic Nb2O5 shown in this work can potentially be used for future optical gas sensing systems.
Interfacing Cell-Based Assays in Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy Using Dielectrophoresis

Abstract: Development of the dielectrophoretic (DEP) live cell trapping technology and its interfacing with the environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is described. DEP microelectrode arrays were fabricated on glass substrate using photolithography and lift-off. Chip-based arrays were applied for ESEM analysis of DEP-trapped human leukemic cells. This work provides proof-of-concept interfacing of the DEP cell retention and trapping technology with ESEM to provide a high-resolution analysis of in idual nonadherent cells.
Liquid metal-based synthesis of high performance monolayer SnS piezoelectric nanogenerators

Abstract: The predicted strong piezoelectricity for monolayers of group IV monochalcogenides, together with their inherent flexibility, makes them likely candidates for developing flexible nanogenerators. Within this group, SnS is a potential choice for such nanogenerators due to its favourable semiconducting properties. To date, access to large-area and highly crystalline monolayer SnS has been challenging due to the presence of strong inter-layer interactions by the lone-pair electrons of S. Here we report single crystal across-the-plane and large-area monolayer SnS synthesis using a liquid metal-based technique. The characterisations confirm the formation of atomically thin SnS with a remarkable carrier mobility of ~35 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and piezoelectric coefficient of ~26 pm V −1 . Piezoelectric nanogenerators fabricated using the SnS monolayers demonstrate a peak output voltage of ~150 mV at 0.7% strain. The stable and flexible monolayer SnS can be implemented into a variety of systems for efficient energy harvesting.

Dynamic manipulation of modes in an optical waveguide using dielectrophoresis

Abstract: The emergence of optofluidics has brought a high degree of tuneability and reconfigurability to optical devices. These possibilities are provided by characteristics of fluids including mobility, wide range of index modulation, and abrupt interfaces that can be easily reshaped. In this work, we created a new class of optofluidic waveguides, in which suspended mesoparticles were employed to greatly enhance the flexibility of the system. We demonstrated tuneable quasi single mode waveguides using spatially controllable mesoparticles in optofluidics. The coupling of waveguiding modes into the assembly of mesoparticles produces strong interactions and resonant conditions, which promote the transitions of the waveguiding modes. The modal response of the system depends on the distribution of packed particles above the polymeric rib waveguide which can be readily controlled under the appropriate combination of dielectrophoresis and hydrodynamic forces.
Atomically thin layers of MoS 2 via a two step thermal evaporation-exfoliation method

Abstract: Two dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS(2)) has recently become of interest to semiconductor and optic industries. However, the current methods for its synthesis require harsh environments that are not compatible with standard fabrication processes. We report on a facile synthesis method of layered MoS(2) using a thermal evaporation technique, which requires modest conditions. In this process, a mixture of MoS(2) and molybdenum dioxide (MoO(2)) is produced by evaporating sulfur powder and molybdenum trioxide (MoO(3)) nano-particles simultaneously. Further annealing in a sulfur-rich environment transforms majority of the excess MoO(2) into layered MoS(2). The deposited MoS(2) is then mechanically exfoliated into minimum resolvable atomically thin layers, which are characterized using micro-Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Furthermore Raman spectroscopy is employed to determine the effect of electrochemical lithium ion exposure on atomically thin layers of MoS(2).

A unique in vivo approach for investigating antimicrobial materials utilizing fistulated animals

Abstract: Unique in vivo tests were conducted through the use of a fistulated ruminant, providing an ideal environment with a erse and vibrant microbial community. Utilizing such a procedure can be especially invaluable for investigating the performance of antimicrobial materials related to human and animal related infections. In this pilot study, it is shown that the rumen of a fistulated animal provides an excellent live laboratory for assessing the properties of antimicrobial materials. We investigate microbial colonization onto model nanocomposites based on silver (Ag) nanoparticles at different concentrations into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). With implantable devices posing a major risk for hospital-acquired infections, the present study provides a viable solution to understand microbial colonization with the potential to reduce the incidence of infection through the introduction of Ag nanoparticles at the optimum concentrations. In vitro measurements were also conducted to show the validity of the approach. An optimal loading of 0.25 wt % Ag is found to show the greatest antimicrobial activity and observed through the in vivo tests to reduce the microbial ersity colonizing the surface.
Hydrothermally formed functional niobium oxide doped tungsten nanorods

Abstract: Nanorod forms of metal oxides are recognized as one of the most remarkable morphologies. Their structure and functionality have driven important advancements in a vast range of electronic devices and applications. In this work, we postulate a novel concept to explain how numerous localized surface states can be engineered into the bandgap of niobium oxide nanorods using tungsten. We discuss their contributions as local state surface charges for the modulation of a Schottky barrier height, the relative dielectric constant and their respective conduction mechanisms. Their effects on hydrogen gas molecule interaction mechanisms are also examined herein. We synthesized niobium tungsten oxide (Nb17W2O25) nanorods via a hydrothermal growth method and evaluated the Schottky barrier height, ideality factor, dielectric constant and trap energy level from the measured I-V versus temperature characteristics in the presence of air and hydrogen to show the validity of our postulations.

Abstract: We demonstrate that the energy bandgap of layered, high-dielectric α-MoO(3) can be reduced to values viable for the fabrication of 2D electronic devices. This is achieved through embedding Coulomb charges within the high dielectric media, advantageously limiting charge scattering. As a result, devices with α-MoO(3) of ∼11 nm thickness and carrier mobilities larger than 1100 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) are obtained.

Abstract: There has been significant interest in using electronically contacted nanorod or nanotube arrays as gas sensors, whereby an adsorbate modifies either the impedance or the Fermi level of the array, enabling detection. Typically, such arrays demonstrate the I-V curves of a Schottky diode that is formed using a metal-semiconductor junction with rectifying characteristics. We show in this work that nanostructured Schottky diodes have a functionally different response, characteristic of the large electric field induced by the size scale of the array. Specifically, they are characterized by a low reverse breakdown voltage. As a result, the reverse bias current becomes a strong function of the applied voltage. In this work, for the first time, we model this unique feature by describing the enhancement effect of high aspect ratio nanostructures on the I-V characteristics of a Schottky diode. A Pt/ZnO/SiC nanostructured Schottky diode is fabricated to verify the theoretical equations presented. The gas sensing properties of the Schottky diode in reversed bias is investigated and it is shown that the theoretical calculations are in excellent agreement with measurements.
Wafer-Scale Synthesis of Semiconducting SnO Monolayers from Interfacial Oxide Layers of Metallic Liquid Tin

Abstract: Atomically thin semiconductors are one of the fastest growing categories in materials science due to their promise to enable high-performance electronic and optical devices. Furthermore, a host of intriguing phenomena have been reported to occur when a semiconductor is confined within two dimensions. However, the synthesis of large area atomically thin materials remains as a significant technological challenge. Here we report a method that allows harvesting monolayer of semiconducting stannous oxide nanosheets (SnO) from the interfacial oxide layer of liquid tin. The method takes advantage of van der Waals forces occurring between the interfacial oxide layer and a suitable substrate that is brought into contact with the molten metal. Due to the liquid state of the metallic precursor, the surface oxide sheet can be delaminated with ease and on a large scale. The SnO monolayer is determined to feature p-type semiconducting behavior with a bandgap of ∼4.2 eV. Field effect transistors based on monolayer SnO are demonstrated. The synthetic technique is facile, scalable and holds promise for creating atomically thin semiconductors at wafer scale.

Abstract: This paper reports the electrowetting properties of ZnO nanorods. These nanorods were grown on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates using different liquid-phase deposition techniques and hydrophobized with sputtered Teflon. The surfaces display superhydrophobic properties. When the applied voltages are less than 35 V, the contact angle change is small and exhibits instant reversibility. For higher voltages, larger contact angle changes were observed. However, the surface was not reversible after removing the applied voltage and required mechanical agitation to return to its initial superhydrophobic state.
Size based separation of microparticles using a dielectrophoretic activated system

Abstract: This work describes the separation of polystyrene microparticles suspended in deionized (DI) water according to their dimensions using a dielectrophoretic (DEP) system. The DEP system utilizes curved microelectrodes integrated into a microfluidic system. Microparticles of 1, 6, and 15 μm are applied to the system and their response to the DEP field is studied at different frequencies of 100, 200, and 20 MHz. The microelectrodes act as a DEP barrier for 15 μm particles and retain them at all frequencies whereas the response of 1 and 6 μm particles depend strongly on the applied frequency. At 100 kHz, both particles are trapped by the microelectrodes. However, at 200 kHz, the 1 μm particles are trapped by the microelectrodes while the 6 μm particles are pushed toward the sidewalls. Finally, at 20 MHz, both particles are pushed toward the sidewalls. The experiments show the tunable performance of the system to sort the microparticles of various dimensions in microfluidic systems.

Abstract: While the remarkable properties of 2D crystalline materials offer tremendous opportunities for their use in optics, electronics, energy systems, biotechnology, and catalysis, their practical implementation largely depends critically on the ability to exfoliate them from a 3D stratified bulk state. Abstract: Electrical-based biosensing platforms offer ease of fabrication and simple sensing solutions. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have been proven to be excellent for the fabrication of field effect transistors (FETs) due to their large transconductance, which can be efficiently used for developing sensitive bioplatforms. We present a 2D molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) FET based biosensing platform, using bovine serum albumin as a model protein. The conduction channel is a nanostructured film made of 2D α-MoO3 nanoflakes, with the majority of nanoflake thicknesses being equal to or less than 2.8 nm. The response time is impressively low (less than 10 s), which is due to the high permittivity of the 2D α-MoO3 nanoflakes. The system offers a competitive solution for future biosensing applications.
Influence of electric field on SERS: Frequency effects, intensity changes, and susceptible bonds

Abstract: The fundamental mechanism proposed to explain surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) relies on electromagnetic field enhancement at optical frequencies. In this work, we demonstrate the use of microfabricated, silver nanotextured electrode pairs to study, in situ, the influence of low frequency (5 mHz to 1 kHz) oscillating electric fields on the SERS spectra of thiophenol. This applied electric field is shown to affect SERS peak intensities and influence specific vibrational modes of the analyte. The applied electric field perturbs the polar analyte, thereby altering the scattering cross section. Peaks related to the sulfurous bond which binds the molecule to the silver nanotexture exhibit strong and distinguishable responses to the applied field, due to varying bending and stretching mechanics. Density functional theory simulations are used to qualitatively verify the experimental observations. Our experimental and simulation results demonstrate that the SERS spectral changes relate to electric field induced molecular reorientation, with dependence on applied field strength and frequency. This demonstration creates new opportunities for external dynamic tuning and multivariate control of SERS measurements.

Abstract: There is significant interest in combining carbon nanotubes with semiconducting polymers for photovoltaic applications because of potential advantages from smaller exciton transport lengths and enhanced charge separation. However, to date, bulk heterojunction (BHJ) devices have demonstrated relatively poor efficiencies, and little is understood about the polymer/nanotube junction. To investigate this interface, we fabricate a planar nano-heterojunction comprising well-isolated millimeter-long single-walled carbon nanotubes underneath a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) layer. The resulting junctions display photovoltaic efficiencies per nanotube ranging from 3% to 3.82%, which exceed those of polymer/nanotube BHJs by a factor of 50-100. The increase is attributed to the absence of aggregate formation in this planar device geometry. It is shown that the polymer/nanotube interface itself is responsible for exciton dissociation. Typical open-circuit voltages are near 0.5 V with fill factors of 0.25-0.3, which are largely invariant with the number of nanotubes per device and P3HT thickness. A maximum efficiency is obtained for a 60 nm-thick P3HT layer, which is predicted by a Monte Carlo simulation that takes into account exciton generation, transport, recombination, and dissociation. This platform is promising for further understanding the potential role of polymer/nanotube interfaces for photovoltaic applications.

Abstract: We demonstrate a magnetocaloric ferrofluid based on a gadolinium saturated liquid metal matrix, using a gallium-based liquid metal alloy as the solvent and suspension medium. The material is liquid at room temperature, while exhibiting spontaneous magnetization and a large magnetocaloric effect. The magnetic properties were attributed to the formation of gadolinium nanoparticles suspended within the liquid gallium alloy, which acts as a reaction solvent during the nanoparticle synthesis. High nanoparticle weight fractions exceeding 2% could be suspended within the liquid metal matrix. The liquid metal ferrofluid shows promise for magnetocaloric cooling due to its high thermal conductivity and its liquid nature. Magnetic and thermoanalytic characterizations reveal that the developed material remains liquid within the temperature window required for domestic refrigeration purposes, which enables future fluidic magnetocaloric devices. Additionally, the observed formation of nanometer-sized metallic particles within the supersaturated liquid metal solution has general implications for chemical synthesis and provides a new synthetic pathway toward metallic nanoparticles based on highly reactive rare earth metals.
Room temperature CO2 reduction to solid carbon species on liquid metals featuring atomically thin ceria interfaces

Abstract: Negative carbon emission technologies are critical for ensuring a future stable climate. However, the gaseous state of CO 2 does render the indefinite storage of this greenhouse gas challenging. Herein, we created a liquid metal electrocatalyst that contains metallic elemental cerium nanoparticles, which facilitates the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 to layered solid carbonaceous species, at a low onset potential of −310 mV vs CO 2 /C. We exploited the formation of a cerium oxide catalyst at the liquid metal/electrolyte interface, which together with cerium nanoparticles, promoted the room temperature reduction of CO 2 . Due to the inhibition of van der Waals adhesion at the liquid interface, the electrode was remarkably resistant to deactivation via coking caused by solid carbonaceous species. The as-produced solid carbonaceous materials could be utilised for the fabrication of high-performance capacitor electrodes. Overall, this liquid metal enabled electrocatalytic process at room temperature may result in a viable negative emission technology.

Abstract: For understanding cells functionalities and their communications, there is a need for highly sensitive cell analysis platforms capable of assessing non-specific chemicals on the surface and in the vicinity of cells. We report a microfluidic system integrating dielectrophoresis and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for the trapping and real time monitoring of cell functions in isolated and grouped cell clusters. Yeast cells are coated with silver nanoparticles to enable highly sensitive SERS analysis. The SERS responses of cells are examined under various conditions: live vs. dead and isolated vs. grouped. This work illustrates the feasibility of the system for in situ cell monitoring and analysis of secreted chemicals during their growth, metabolism, proliferation and apoptosis.
Interaction of hydrogen with zinc oxide nanorods: Why the spacing is important

Abstract: Hydrothermally grown ZnO nanorods show high interaction rates with H₂ when the spacing between adjacent nanorods decreases. Density functional theory calculations showed the interaction between nanorod surfaces in-registry is attractive at separations < 5 Å, while it is repulsive for out-of-registry alignments, indicating that uniform nanorods grown with their faces aligned out-of-registry are not likely to fuse due to the repulsion between the surfaces. The separation of 5 Å was found to be sufficient for H₂ to adsorb between the surfaces, resulting in a transfer of charge from H(2) to the surface, consistent with the measured increase in conductivity. This explains the ability of hydrogen to adsorb on closely spaced nanorods.
Intelligent Control of Surface Hydrophobicity

Abstract: Switchable surfaces are highly useful materials with surface properties that change in response to external stimuli. These surfaces can be employed in both research and industrial applications, where the ability to actively control surface properties can be used to develop smart materials and intelligent surfaces. Herein, we review a range of surfaces in which hydrophobicity can be controlled. We present the principal ideas of surface switching, discuss recent developments, explore experimental issues and examine factors that influence surface switching, including the nature of the stimuli, the underlying material, the morphology of the surface and the surrounding environment. We have categorised switchable surfaces according to the stimuli that trigger changes in surface hydrophobicity. These are electrically, electrochemically, thermally, mechanically, photo- and environmentally inducible surfaces. In addition, we review the use of chemical reactions to modify the properties of switchable surfaces and produce changes in the molecular structure and nanoscale features of the surface.

Abstract: Here, we demonstrate that niobium pentoxide (Nb(2)O(5)) is an ideal candidate for increasing the efficiencies of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The key lies in developing a Nb(2)O(5) crisscross nanoporous network, using our unique elevated temperature anodization process. For the same thicknesses of ∼4 μm, the DSSC based on the Nb(2)O(5) layer has a significantly higher efficiency (∼4.1%) when compared to that which incorporates a titanium dioxide nanotubular layer (∼2.7%). This is the highest efficiency among all of the reported photoanodes for such a thickness when utilizing back-side illumination. We ascribe this to a combination of reduced electron scattering, greater surface area, wider band gap, and higher conduction band edge, as well as longer effective electron lifetimes.

Abstract: Liquid–liquid interfaces of liquid alloys with electrolytic solutions present fertile platforms for realizing exciting interfacial phenomena that can be devised to process alloys and produce nanomaterials. Here, such an interface is established by immersing a gallium–bismuth binary liquid alloy into aqueous electrolytes. It is shown that the application of a negative voltage to this interface results in a rapid and complete liberation of bismuth nanostructures from liquid gallium. The set of conditions that govern the chemistry of the interface can be adjusted to control the oxidation state, morphology, and crystal structure of the expelled bismuth. By changing the conditions nanotubular, atomically thin plates, and sea‐urchin‐shaped bismuth oxide morphologies are obtained. The process can also control the crystal phase of bismuth oxide as monoclinic (α), tetragonal (β), or body‐centered cubic (γ). The addition of ascorbic acid to the electrolyte is observed to prevent the oxidation of the expelled entities, resulting in bismuth metal nanoparticles. Ab initio molecular dynamics and computational fluid dynamics simulations are performed to elucidate this rapid phase separation at the interface. This knowledge will potentially lead to new pathways for using alloys as reaction media to refine metals while simultaneously producing nanomaterials for various applications.
Noncontact rotation, levitation, and acceleration of flowing liquid metal wires

Abstract: Streams of fluids, particulates, and other flowing media are difficult to control after they have left a nozzle. Here, we present the noncontact manipulation of a free-flowing stream of liquid metal. Such streams form by electrochemically lowering the interfacial tension. The electrochemical reactions make the streams into soft current–carrying conductors presenting minimal resistance to manipulation via the Lorentz force in the magnetic field. Meanwhile, the movement of the stream induces a secondary force arising from Lenz’s law that causes the manipulated streams to levitate in unique shapes. This work, which exploits these forces in a visually stunning manner, enables shaping of fluids in a noncontact manner.

Abstract: The electronic properties of thiol-functionalized 2D MoS2 nanosheets are investigated. Shifts in the valence and conduction bands and Fermi levels are observed while bandgaps remain unaffected. These findings allow the tuning of energy barriers between 2D MoS2 and other materials, which can lead to improved control over 2D MoS2 -based electronic and optical devices and catalysts.

Abstract: Liquid metals provide new dimensions for controlling and governing of reactions. The concept of freely moving metal solutes in liquid metals can be potentially used for enhancing and tuning interfacial reactions. In this work, zinc (Zn), as the solute metal is shown that, can move to the interface, enriching the interfacial area for the efficient synthesis of highly crystalline and porous zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8). The highest rate of reaction is illustrated, and the best quality ZIF‐8, are obtained when a eutectic liquid metal system of Zn with gallium (Ga), containing 3.6 wt.% of Zn, is implemented. It is computationally shown that a combination of Ga activation and freely moving Zn leads to the highest reaction rate and better coordination with organic linkers. The comparisons with solid s les and non‐eutectic systems of Ga liquid demonstrate the advantages of eutectic mix. The work can be expanded to a variety of future interfacial reactions of zeolite imidazole frameworks for commercial scale up.

Abstract: Gallium is a metal that literally melts in your hand. It has low toxicity, near-zero vapor pressure, and a viscosity similar to water. Despite possessing a surface tension larger than any other liquid (near room temperature), gallium can form nonspherical shapes due to the thin, solid native oxide skin that forms rapidly in oxygen. These properties enable new ways to pattern metals (e.g., injection and printing) to create stretchable and soft devices with an unmatched combination of mechanical and electrical properties. The oxide skin can be transferred to other substrates and manipulated electrochemically to lower the interfacial tension to near zero. The reactivity of gallium can drive a wide range of reactions. The liquid state of gallium makes it easy to break into particles for making colloids and soft composites that have unusual properties due to the deformable nature of the filler. This review summarizes the truly unique and exciting properties of gallium liquid metals.

Abstract: Known to possess distinctive properties that differ greatly from their bulk form, layered two-dimensional materials have been extensively studied and incorporated into many versatile applications ranging from optoelectronics to sensors. For biomedical research, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have garnered much interest as they have been shown to exhibit relatively low toxicity, high stability in aqueous environments, and the ability to adhere to biological materials such as proteins. These materials are promising candidates, demonstrating potential applications in biosensing, cell imaging, diagnostics, and therapeutics. Preparation and exfoliation of 2D TMDs play an important part in these various applications as their properties are heavily dependent on the number of layers and lateral size. Described in this article are protocols for the liquid exfoliation of 2D TMDs from their bulk materials. Additional protocols are also provided for functionalizing or modifying the surface of the exfoliated 2D TMDs. © 2016 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract: This paper demonstrates the utilization of 3D semispherical shaped microelectrodes for dielectrophoretic manipulation of yeast cells. The semispherical microelectrodes are capable of producing strong electric field gradients, and in turn dielectrophoretic forces across a large area of channel cross-section. The semispherical shape of microelectrodes avoids the formation of undesired sharp electric fields along the structure and also minimizes the disturbance of the streamlines of nearby passing fluid. The advantage of semispherical microelectrodes over the planar microelectrodes is demonstrated in a series of numerical simulations and proof-of-concept experiments aimed toward immobilization of viable yeast cells.

Abstract: We demonstrate that a three dimensional (3D) crystalline tungsten trioxide (WO(3)) nanoporous network, directly grown on a transparent conductive oxide (TCO) substrate, is a suitable working electrode material for high performance electrochromic devices. This nanostructure, with achievable thicknesses of up to 2 μm, is prepared at room temperature by the electrochemical anodization of a RF-sputtered tungsten film deposited on a fluoride doped tin oxide (FTO) conductive glass, under low applied anodic voltages and mild chemical dissolution conditions. For the crystalline nanoporous network with thicknesses ranging from 0.6 to 1 μm, impressive coloration efficiencies of up to 141.5 cm(2) C(-1) are achieved by applying a low coloration voltage of -0.25 V. It is also observed that there is no significant degradation of the electrochromic properties of the porous film after 2000 continuous coloration-bleaching cycles. The remarkable electrochromic characteristics of this crystalline and nanoporous WO(3) are mainly ascribed to the combination of a large surface area, facilitating increased intercalation of protons, as well as excellent continuous and directional paths for charge transfer and proton migration in the highly crystalline material.

Abstract: We demonstrate photochemically induced actuation of liquid metal marbles, which are liquid metal droplets encased in micro/nanoparticles. The WO3 nanoparticles coated marbles are placed in H2O2 solution, and their surfaces are illuminated with UV light. The semiconducting WO3 coating behaves as a photocatalyst to trigger a photochemical reaction, generating oxygen bubbles that propel the marble. The actuation of the marbles is investigated under different H2O2 concentrations, light intensities, and marble dimensions. Equations describing the fundamentals of such actuations are presented.

Abstract: Anodized nanoporous Nb2O5 films are synthesized using two different types of electrolyte compositions onto transparent conductive glasses and their impurities induced during the anodization process are assessed. These films are incorporated as photoanodes in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The one with no traces of impurity-driven defects exhibits higher current density and longer electron lifetimes, and consequently, an improvement in photoconversion efficiencies compared to the one that contains impurities.

Abstract: Nanostructured piezoelectric and ferroelectric thin films are being increasingly used in sensing and actuating microdevices. In this work, we report the experimental discovery of localized electric field enhancement in nanocolumnar piezoelectric thin films and its significant impact on piezoresponse. The magnitude of electric field enhancement is associated with nonflat surface morphologies and is in agreement with theoretical and finite element models. The influence of this surface morphology induced enhancement on piezoresponse is demonstrated using phase field simulations, which also illustrates surface morphology induced strain enhancement. The observed enhancement can be effectively harnessed to improve the sensitivity of related piezoelectric thin film applications.

Abstract: Nonviable cells are essential biosystems, due to the functionalities they offer and their effects on viable cells. Therefore, the separation and immobilization of nonviable cells separately or in the vicinity of viable cells is of great importance for many fundamentals investigations in cell biology. However, most nonviable cells become less polarizable than the surrounding medium at conductivities above 0.01 S/m. This means that in such a medium, dielectrophoresis, despite its great versatilities for manipulation of cells, cannot be employed for immobilizing nonviable cells. Here, we present a novel approach to change the dielectrophoretic (DEP) response of nonviable yeast cells by treating them with low concentrations of ionic surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate. After this treatment, they exhibit a strong positive DEP response, even at high medium conductivities. The capability of this treatment is demonstrated in two proof-of-concept experiments. First, we show the sorting and immobilization of viable and nonviable yeast cells, along consecutive microelectrode arrays. Second, we demonstrate the immobilization of viable and nonviable cells in the vicinity of each other along the same microelectrode array. The proposed technique allows DEP platforms to be utilized for the immobilization and subsequent postanalysis of both viable and nonviable cells with and without the presence of each other.

Abstract: Pure gallium is a soft metal with a low temperature melting point of 29.8 °C. This low melting temperature can potentially be employed for creating optical components with changeable configurations on demand by manipulating gallium in its liquid state. Gallium is a smooth and highly reflective metal that can be readily maneuvered using electric fields. These features allow gallium to be used as a reconfigurable optical reflector. This work demonstrates the use of gallium for creating reconfigurable optical reflectors manipulated through the use of electric fields when gallium is in a liquid state. The use of gallium allows the formed structures to be frozen and preserved as long as the temperature of the metal remains below its melting temperature. The lens can be readily reshaped by raising the temperature above the melting point and reapplying an electric field to produce a different curvature of the gallium reflector.
Potential of in vivo real-time gastric gas profiling: A pilot evaluation of heat-stress and modulating dietary cinnamon effect in an animal model

Abstract: Gastroenterologists are still unable to differentiate between some of the most ordinary disorders of the gut and consequently patients are misdiagnosed. We have developed a swallowable gas sensor capsule for addressing this. The gases of the gut are the by-product of the fermentation processes during digestion, affected by the gut state and can consequently provide the needed information regarding the health of the gut. Here we present the first study on gas sensor capsules for revealing the effect of a medical supplement in an animal (pig) model. We characterise the real-time alterations of gastric-gas in response to environmental heat-stress and dietary cinnamon and use the gas profiles for understanding the bio-physiological changes. Under no heat-stress, feeding increases gastric CO 2 concentration, while dietary cinnamon reduces it due to decrease in gastric acid and pepsin secretion. Alternatively, heat-stress leads to hyperventilation in pigs, which reduces CO 2 concentration and with the cinnamon treatment, CO 2 diminishes even more, resulting in health improvement outcomes. Overall, a good repeatability in gas profiles is also observed. The model demonstrates the strong potential of real-time gas profiler in providing new physiological information that will impact understanding of therapeutics, presenting a highly reliable device for monitoring/diagnostics of gastrointestinal disorders.

Abstract: Dielectrophoresis, the induced motion of polarisable particles in a nonuniform electric field, has been proven as a versatile mechanism to transport, accumulate, separate and characterise micro/nano scale bioparticles in microfluidic systems. The integration of DEP systems into the microfluidics enables the inexpensive, fast, highly sensitive, highly selective and label-free detection and analysis of target bioparticles. This review provides an in-depth overview of state-of-the-art dielectrophoretic (DEP) platforms integrated into microfluidics aimed towards different biomedical applications. It classifies the current DEP systems in terms of different microelectrode configurations and operating strategies devised to generate and employ DEP forces in such processes, and compares the features of each approach. Finally, it suggests the future trends and potential applications of DEP systems in single cell analysis, stem cell research, establishing novel devices, and realising fully DEP-activated lab-on-a-chip systems.
Direct Transformation of Crystalline MoO3 into Few-Layers MoS2

Abstract: We fabricated large-area atomically thin MoS2 layers through the direct transformation of crystalline molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) by sulfurization at relatively low temperatures. The obtained MoS2 sheets are polycrystalline (~10–20 nm single-crystal domain size) with areas of up to 300 × 300 µm2, 2–4 layers in thickness and show a marked p-type behavior. The synthesized films are characterized by a combination of complementary techniques: Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and electronic transport measurements.
Wafer-scale two-dimensional semiconductors from printed oxide skin of liquid metals

Abstract: A variety of deposition methods for two-dimensional crystals have been demonstrated however, their wafer-scale deposition remains a challenge. Here we introduce a technique for depositing and patterning of wafer-scale two-dimensional metal chalcogenide compounds by transforming the native interfacial metal oxide layer of low melting point metal precursors (group III and IV) in liquid form. In an oxygen-containing atmosphere, these metals establish an atomically thin oxide layer in a self-limiting reaction. The layer increases the wettability of the liquid metal placed on oxygen-terminated substrates, leaving the thin oxide layer behind. In the case of liquid gallium, the oxide skin attaches exclusively to a substrate and is then sulfurized via a relatively low temperature process. By controlling the surface chemistry of the substrate, we produce large area two-dimensional semiconducting GaS of unit cell thickness (∼1.5 nm). The presented deposition and patterning method offers great commercial potential for wafer-scale processes.

Abstract: Anodization at elevated temperatures in nitric acid has been used for the production of highly porous and thick tungsten trioxide nanostructured films for photosensitive device applications. The anodization process resulted in platelet crystals with thicknesses of 20-60 nm and lengths of 100-1000 nm. Maximum thicknesses of approximately 2.4 microm were obtained after 4 h of anodization at 20 V. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the as-prepared anodized s les contain predominantly hydrated tungstite phases depending on voltage, while films annealed at 400 degrees C for 4 h are predominantly orthorhombic WO3 phase. Photocurrent measurements revealed that the current density of the 2.4 microm nanostructured anodized film was 6 times larger than the nonanodized films. Dye-sensitized solar cells developed using these films produced 0.33 V and 0.65 mA/cm2 in open- and short-circuit conditions.

Abstract: Gut microbiota dynamically participate in erse physiological activities with direct impact on the host's health. A range of factors associated with the highly complex intestinal flora ecosystem poses challenges in regulating the homeostasis of microbiota. The consumption of live probiotic bacteria, in principle, can address these challenges and confer health benefits. In this context, one of the major problems is ensuring the survival of probiotic cells when faced with physical and chemical assaults during their intake and subsequent gastrointestinal passage to the gut. Advances in the field have focused on improving conventional encapsulation techniques in the microscale to achieve high cell viability, gastric and temperature resistance, and longer shelf lives. However, these microencapsulation approaches are known to have limitations with possible difficulties in clinical translation. In this Perspective, we present a brief overview of the current progress of different probiotic encapsulation methods and highlight the contemporary and emerging single-cell encapsulation strategies using nanocoatings for in idual probiotic cells. Finally, we discuss the relative advantages of various nanoencapsulation approaches and the future trend toward developing coated probiotics with advanced features and health benefits.

Abstract: Despite a favourable morphology, anodized and ordered TiO2 nanotubes are incapable of showing electrochromic properties in comparison to many other metal oxide counterparts. To tackle this issue, MoO3 of ~5 to 15 nm thickness was electrodeposited onto TiO2 nanotube arrays. A homogenous MoO3 coating was obtained and the crystal phase of the electrodeposited coating was determined to be α-MoO3. The electronic and optical augmentations of the MoO3 coated TiO2 platforms were evaluated through electrochromic measurements. The MoO3/TiO2 system showed a 4-fold increase in optical density over bare TiO2 when the thickness of the MoO3 coating was optimised. The enhancement was ascribed to (a) the α-MoO3 coating reducing the bandgap of the composite material, which shifted the band edge of the TiO2 platform, and subsequently increased the charge carrier transfer of the overall system and (b) the layered morphology of α-MoO3 that increased the intercalation probability and also provided direct pathways for charge carrier transfer.

Abstract: We demonstrate an active microfluidic platform that integrates dielectrophoresis for the control of silver nanoparticles spacing, as they flow in a liquid channel. By careful control of the nanoparticles spacing, we can effectively increase the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal intensity based on augmenting the number of SERS-active hot-spots, while avoiding irreversible aggregation of the particles. The system is benchmarked using dipicolinate (2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) (DPA), which is a biomarker of Bacillus anthracis. The validity of the results is discussed using several complementing characterization scenarios.

Abstract: Quantification of programmed and accidental cell death provides useful end-points for the anticancer drug efficacy assessment. Cell death is, however, a stochastic process. Therefore, the opportunity to dynamically quantify in idual cellular states is advantageous over the commonly employed static, end-point assays. In this work, we describe the development and application of a microfabricated, dielectrophoretic (DEP) cell immobilization platform for the real-time analysis of cancer drug-induced cytotoxicity. Microelectrode arrays were designed to generate weak electro-thermal vortices that support efficient drug mixing and rapid cell immobilization at the delta-shape regions of strong electric field formed between the opposite microelectrodes. We applied this technology to the dynamic analysis of hematopoietic tumor cells that represent a particular challenge for real-time imaging due to their dislodgement during image acquisition. The present study was designed to provide a comprehensive mechanistic rationale for accelerated cell-based assays on DEP chips using real-time labeling with cell permeability markers. In this context, we provide data on the complex behavior of viable vs dying cells in the DEP fields and probe the effects of DEP fields upon cell responses to anticancer drugs and overall bioassay performance. Results indicate that simple DEP cell immobilization technology can be readily applied for the dynamic analysis of investigational drugs in hematopoietic cancer cells. This ability is of particular importance in studying the outcome of patient derived cancer cells, when exposed to therapeutic drugs, as these cells are often rare and difficult to collect, purify and immobilize.

Abstract: The utilization of small-scale pumps is presently h ered by their limited flow rates with respect to the input power or their rather complicated fabrication process. These issues arise as many conventional pumping effects rely on moving elements. Here, we demonstrate the concept of a liquid metal enabled pump with no mechanical parts by simply incorporating droplets of Galinstan. The liquid metal enabled pump creates high flow rates ( ,000 µL/min) at exceptionally low powers ( mW) by electrowetting/deelectrowetting the surface upon application of electric field. The presented pump is both efficient and simple hence, it has the potential to advance the field of actuation in small-scale systems.

Acoustically-Driven Trion and Exciton Modulation in Piezoelectric Two-Dimensional MoS2

Abstract: By exploiting the very recent discovery of the piezoelectricity in odd-numbered layers of two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), we show the possibility of reversibly tuning the photoluminescence of single and odd-numbered multilayered MoS2 using high frequency sound wave coupling. We observe a strong quenching in the photoluminescence associated with the dissociation and spatial separation of electrons-holes quasi-particles at low applied acoustic powers. At the same applied powers, we note a relative preference for ionization of trions into excitons. This work also constitutes the first visual presentation of the surface displacement in one-layered MoS2 using laser Doppler vibrometry. Such observations are associated with the acoustically generated electric field arising from the piezoelectric nature of MoS2 for odd-numbered layers. At larger applied powers, the thermal effect dominates the behavior of the two-dimensional flakes. Altogether, the work reveals several key fundamentals governing acousto-optic properties of odd-layered MoS2 that can be implemented in future optical and electronic systems.

Abstract: Ga–Sn–Zn eutectic alloy is a non-toxic liquid metal alloy which could be used in a multitude of applications, including as a heat transfer agent, in gas sensing, and in medicine. Alloys containing gallium readily oxidise in air, forming a thin oxide layer that influences the properties of liquid metals and which has not been studied. In this study, the oxide layer formed on Ga–Sn–Zn alloy was transferred at room temperature onto three substrates—quartz, glass and silicon. The contact angle between the liquid alloy and different substrates was determined. The obtained thin oxide films were characterised using atomic force microscopy, X-ray photon spectroscopy, and optical and transmission electron microscopy. The contact angle does not influence the deposition of the layers. It was determined that it is possible to obtain nanometric oxide layers of a few micrometres in size. The chemical composition was determined by XPS and EDS independently, and showed that the oxide layer contains about 90 atom % of gallium with some additions of tin and zinc. The oxides obtained from the eutectic Ga–Sn–Zn liquid alloys appear to be nanocrystalline.

Association between severity of COVID-19 symptoms and habitual food intake in adult outpatients

Abstract: To evaluate the association between habitual frequency of food intake of certain food groups during the COVID-19 pandemic and manifestations of COVID-19 symptoms in adult outpatients with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection. We included 236 patients who attended an outpatient clinic for suspected COVID-19 evaluation. Severity of symptoms, habitual food intake frequency, demographics and Bristol chart scores were obtained before diagnostic confirmation with real-time reverse transcriptase PCR using nasopharyngeal swab. The results of the COVID-19 diagnostic tests were positive for 103 patients (44%) and negative for 133 patients (56%). In the SARS-CoV-2-positive group, symptom severity scores had significant negative correlations with habitual intake frequency of specific food groups. Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis adjusted for age, sex and occupation confirmed that SARS-CoV-2-positive patients showed a significant negative association between having higher symptom severity and the habitual intake frequency of ‘legumes’ and ‘grains, bread and cereals’. Increase in habitual frequency of intake of ‘legumes’, and ‘grains, bread and cereals’ food groups decreased overall symptom severity in patients with COVID-19. This study provides a framework for designing a protective diet during the COVID-19 pandemic and also establishes a hypothesis of using a diet-based intervention in the management of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which may be explored in future studies.

Engineering electrodeposited ZnO films and their memristive switching performance

Abstract: We report the influence of zinc oxide (ZnO) seed layers on the performance of ZnO-based memristive devices fabricated using an electrodeposition approach. The memristive element is based on a sandwich structure using Ag and Pt electrodes. The ZnO seed layer is employed to tune the morphology of the electrodeposited ZnO films in order to increase the grain boundary density as well as construct highly ordered arrangements of grain boundaries. Additionally, the seed layer also assists in optimizing the concentration of oxygen vacancies in the films. The fabricated devices exhibit memristive switching behaviour with symmetrical and asymmetrical hysteresis loops in the absence and presence of ZnO seed layers, respectively. A modest concentration of oxygen vacancy in electrodeposited ZnO films as well as an increase in the ordered arrangement of grain boundaries leads to higher switching ratios in Ag/ZnO/Pt devices.

Abstract: We have investigated several key aspects for the self-organization of nanotubes in RF sputtered titanium (Ti) thin films formed by the anodization process in fluoride-ion-containing neutral electrolytes. Ti films were deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates at room temperature and 300 degrees C, and then anodized. The films were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV-vis spectrometry before and after anodization. It was observed that anodization of high temperature deposited films resulted in nanotube type structures with diameters in the range of 10-45 nm for an applied voltage of 5-20 V. In addition, the anatase form of TiO(2) is formed during the anodization process which is also confirmed using photocurrent measurements. However, the anodization of room temperature deposited Ti films resulted in irregular pores or holes.

Detection of changes in regional colonic fermentation in response to supplementing a low FODMAP diet with dietary fibres by hydrogen concentrations, but not by luminal pH

Abstract: Carbohydrate fermentation plays a pivotal role in maintaining colonic health with excessive proximal and deficient distal fermentation being detrimental. To utilise telemetric gas‐ and pH‐sensing capsule technologies for defining patterns of regional fermentation following dietary manipulations, alongside conventional techniques of measuring fermentation. In a double‐blind crossover trial, 20 patients with irritable bowel syndrome were fed low FODMAP diets that included no extra fibre (total fibre content 24 g/day), or additional poorly fermented fibre, alone (33 g/day) or with fermentable fibre (45 g/day) for 2 weeks. Plasma and faecal biochemistry, luminal profiles defined by tandem gas‐ and pH‐sensing capsules, and faecal microbiota were assessed. Plasma short‐chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations (μmol/L) were median (IQR) 121 (100–222) with fibre combination compared with 66 (44–120) with poorly fermented fibre alone ( p = 0.028) and 74 (55–125) control ( p = 0.069), but no differences in faecal content were observed. Luminal hydrogen concentrations (%), but not pH, were higher in distal colon (mean 4.9 [95% CI: 2.2–7.5]) with fibre combination compared with 1.8 (0.8–2.8) with poorly fermented fibre alone ( p = 0.003) and 1.9 (0.7–3.1) control ( p = 0.003). Relative abundances of saccharolytic fermentative bacteria were generally higher in association with supplementation with the fibre combination. A modest increase in fermentable plus poorly fermented fibres had minor effects on faecal measures of fermentation, despite increases in plasma SCFA and abundance of fermentative bacteria, but the gas‐sensing capsule, not pH‐sensing capsule, detected the anticipated propagation of fermentation distally in the colon. The gas‐sensing capsule technology provides unique insights into localisation of colonic fermentation. Trial registration: ACTRN12619000691145.

Abstract: Ingestible sensing capsules are fast emerging as a critical technology that has the ability to greatly impact health, nutrition, and clinical areas. These ingestible devices are noninvasive and hence are very attractive for customers. With widespread access to smart phones connected to the Internet, the data produced by this technology can be readily seen and reviewed online, and accessed by both users and physicians. The outputs provide invaluable information to reveal the state of gut health and disorders as well as the impact of food, medical supplements, and environmental changes on the gastrointestinal tract. One unique feature of such ingestible sensors is that their passage through the gut lumen gives them access to each in idual organ of the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, ingestible sensors offer the ability to gather images and monitor luminal fluid and the contents of each gut segment including electrolytes, enzymes, metabolites, hormones, and the microbial communities. As such, an incredible wealth of knowledge regarding the functionality and state of health of in iduals through key gut biomarkers can be obtained. This Review presents an overview of the gut structure and discusses current and emerging digestible technologies. The text is an effort to provide a comprehensive overview of ingestible sensing capsules, from both a body physiology point of view as well as a technological view, and to detail the potential information that they can generate.

Abstract: In this work, DEP platforms with funnelled and micro-tip electrode patterns were fabricated, and integrated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannel blocks. The DEP platforms were employed to manipulate polystyrene particles of 1 and 3 μm. The response of the system was characterised in a wide range of signal magnitudes (1–30 V peak-to-peak) and frequencies (100 kHz to 200 MHz), as well as the liquid flow rates (1 to 10 μL/min). Calculations were also carried out to analyse the DEP spectra of polystyrene particles when suspended in the medium (deionised water) to determine the optimum operating frequency of the DEP systems. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations indicated that polystyrene particles can experience positive and negative DEP forces within certain frequency ranges of the applied electric field, and the crossover frequency (where the DEP force is zero) of the system strongly depends on the conductivities of the particles. Additionally, larger particles experience stronger DEP forces and can be more efficiently concentrated at or repelled along the electrodes. The concentration performance of the DEP systems were evaluated by measuring the thickness of particle streams at different flow rates. Finally, the ability of funnelled and micro-tip electrodes to trap the particles was compared.

Abstract: Recently, the bubble-based systems have offered a new paradigm in microfluidics. Gas bubbles are highly flexible, controllable and barely mix with liquids and thus can be used for the creation of reconfigurable microfluidic systems. In this work, a hydrodynamically actuated bubble-based microfluidic system is introduced. This system enables the precise movement of air bubbles via axillary feeder channels to alter the geometry of the main channel and consequently the flow characteristics of the system. Mixing of neighbouring streams is demonstrated by oscillating the bubble at desired displacements and frequencies. Flow control is achieved by pushing the bubble to partially or fully close the main channel. Patterning of suspended particles is also demonstrated by creating a large bubble along the sidewalls. Rigorous analytical and numerical calculations are presented to describe the operation of the system. Abstract: The use of cell‐mediated chemistry is an emerging strategy that exploits the metabolic processes of living cells to develop biomimetic materials with advanced functionalities and enhanced biocompatibility. Here, a concept of a cell‐mediated catalytic process for forming protective nano‐shells on in idual probiotic cells is demonstrated. This process is leveraged by the cell environment to induce oxidative polymerization of phenolic compounds, and simultaneously these phenolic polymers assemble to form nano‐coatings around in idual cell surfaces. The detailed analysis reveals that the oxidation process is triggered by an essential nutrient (manganese) of the probiotic cells, which significantly increases the oxidation rate of phenolic compounds. The phenolic coatings, encapsulating each cell in nanometre scale, demonstrate excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Additionally, the in situ encapsulated probiotic cells display an improved gastric tolerance of up to ≈1.4 times higher than the native cells and enhanced adhesion as high as ≈1.6 times onto a model of intestinal epithelial cells. Finally, the coated probiotic cells exhibit a high antioxidant activity as an advanced feature. Overall, this method provides a unique approach to improve the probiotic delivery using the cell machinery to engineer encapsulating nanocoatings with protective benefits and new functionalities.

Abstract: There have been many investigations to reveal the nature of the hydrogen gas and ZnO nanopowder interaction at elevated temperatures, while at present no conclusive description of such an interaction has been confidently reported. In this work, we demonstrate that a hydroxyl group is formed during this interaction, depending on size and relative crystallinity of nanopowders. Our in situ Raman spectroscopy investigations show that the interaction directly affects the intensity of the Raman signal at 483 cm(-1), relative to the peak at 519 cm(-1). Ex situ x-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy also show extra peaks at 44° and 1618 cm(-1), respectively, after hydrogenation. These peaks were all identified as surface hydroxyl groups, which can be related to the formation of water on the ZnO nanopowder surfaces.

Microfluidic platforms for the investigation of intercellular signalling mechanisms

Abstract: Intercellular signalling has been identified as a highly complex process, responsible for orchestrating many physiological functions. While conventional methods of investigation have been useful, their limitations are impeding further development. Microfluidics offers an opportunity to overcome some of these limitations. Most notably, microfluidic systems can emulate the in-vivo environments. Further, they enable exceptionally precise control of the microenvironment, allowing complex mechanisms to be selectively isolated and studied in detail. There has thus been a growing adoption of microfluidic platforms for investigation of cell signalling mechanisms. This review provides an overview of the different signalling mechanisms and discusses the methods used to study them, with a focus on the microfluidic devices developed for this purpose.

Abstract: Components with self-propelling abilities are important building blocks of small autonomous systems and the characteristics of liquid metals are capable of fulfilling self-propulsion criteria. To date, there has been no exploration regarding the effect of electrolyte ionic content surrounding a liquid metal for symmetry breaking that generates motion. Here we show the controlled actuation of liquid metal droplets using only the ionic properties of the aqueous electrolyte. We demonstrate that pH or ionic concentration gradients across a liquid metal droplet induce both deformation and surface Marangoni flow. We show that the Lippmann dominated deformation results in maximum velocity for the self-propulsion of liquid metal droplets and illustrate several key applications, which take advantage of such electrolyte-induced motion. With this finding, it is possible to conceive the propulsion of small entities that are constructed and controlled entirely with fluids, progressing towards more advanced soft systems.

In situ Raman spectroscopy of H2 interaction with WO3 films

Abstract: It is well known that WO(3) interacts efficiently with H(2) gas in the presence of noble metals (such as Pd, Pt and Au) at elevated temperatures, changing its optical behaviors and that its crystallinity plays an important role in these interactions. For the first time, we investigated the in situ Raman spectra changes of WO(3) films of different crystal phases, while incorporating Pd catalysts, at elevated temperatures in the presence of H(2). The Pd/WO(3) films were prepared using RF sputtering and subsequently annealed at 300, 400 and 500 °C in air in order to alter the dominant crystal phase. The films were then characterized using SEM, XRD, XPS, and both UV-VIS and Raman spectroscopy. In order to fundamentally study the process, the measurements were conducted when films were interacting with 1% H(2) in synthetic air at elevated s le temperatures (20, 60, 100 and 140 °C). We suggest that the changes of Raman spectra under such conditions to be mainly a function of the crystal phase, transforming from monoclinic to a mix phase of monoclinic and orthorhombic achieved via increasing the annealing temperature. The as-deposited s le consistently shows similar Raman spectra responses at different operating conditions upon H(2) exposure. However, increasing the annealing temperature to 500 °C tunes the optimum H(2) response operating temperature to 60 °C.

Abstract: Indium nitride (InN) has been of significant interest for creating and studying two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG). Herein we demonstrate the formation of 2DEGs in ultrathin doped and undoped 2D InN nanosheets featuring high carrier mobilities at room temperature. The synthesis is carried out via a two-step liquid metal-based printing method followed by a microwave plasma-enhanced nitridation reaction. Ultrathin InN nanosheets with a thickness of ∼2 ± 0.2 nm were isolated over large areas with lateral dimensions exceeding centimeter scale. Abstract: Two billabongs on the floodplain of the Murrumbidgee River, Australia, were partitioned in half with impermeable plastic barriers for four months from summer to winter 1995. The densities of carp were manipulated to establish high- and low-carp biomass treatments in each billabong. Final standing stocks of carp in the high- and low-carp treatments of each billabong were 1181 and 101 kg ha-1 , and 669 and 348 kg ha-1 , respectively. Turbidity, phytoplankton biomass and total and dissolved phosphorus concentrations were similar in both ends of each billabong before the establishment of the plastic barriers. Throughout the experimental period, turbidity and phytoplankton biomass were significantly higher in the high-carp treatment in both billabongs. However, the two billabongs had different temporal patterns for both turbidity and phytoplankton biomass. Concentrations of total phosphorus were usually greater in the high-carp end of each billabong but there was no consistent pattern for dissolved phosphorus. Carp had a significant impact on turbidity and intensity of algal bloom but this varied with carp biomass and billabong sediment type, and factors other than carp usually contributed to most of the variation in measured water quality.

Printing two-dimensional gallium phosphate out of liquid metal

Abstract: Two-dimensional piezotronics will benefit from the emergence of new crystals featuring high piezoelectric coefficients. Gallium phosphate (GaPO 4 ) is an archetypal piezoelectric material, which does not naturally crystallise in a stratified structure and hence cannot be exfoliated using conventional methods. Here, we report a low-temperature liquid metal-based two-dimensional printing and synthesis strategy to achieve this goal. We exfoliate and surface print the interfacial oxide layer of liquid gallium, followed by a vapour phase reaction. The method offers access to large-area, wide bandgap two-dimensional (2D) GaPO 4 nanosheets of unit cell thickness, while featuring lateral dimensions reaching centimetres. The unit cell thick nanosheets present a large effective out-of-plane piezoelectric coefficient of 7.5 ± 0.8 pm V − 1 . The developed printing process is also suitable for the synthesis of free standing GaPO 4 nanosheets. The low temperature synthesis method is compatible with a variety of electronic device fabrication procedures, providing a route for the development of future 2D piezoelectric materials.

Abstract: Semiconducting properties of nanoparticle coating on liquid metal marbles can present opportunities for an additional dimension of control on these soft objects with functional surfaces in aqueous environments. We show the unique differences in the electrochemical actuation mechanisms of liquid metal marbles with n- and p-type semiconducting nanomaterial coating. A systematic study on such liquid metal marbles shows voltage dependent nanoparticle cluster formation and morphological changes of the liquid metal core during electrochemical actuations and these observations are unique to p-type nanomaterial coated liquid metal marbles.

Dielectrophoretically patterned carbon nanotubes to sort microparticles

Abstract: This article compares the operation of a dielectrophoretic (DEP) platform before and after pattering carbon nanotubes (CNTs) between its microelectrodes. The erse performance of the DEP system is assessed by separating 1 and 5 μm polystyrene particles. In the absence of CNTs, both particles can only be trapped by operating the system at low medium conductivities, (<10(-3) S/m) and frequencies (<75 kHz). Alternatively, applying CNTs to the system, some CNTs coat the surface of particles and increase their overall conductivity and permittivity, whereas the rest of them are patterned between the microelectrodes and induce strong DEP forces at their free ends, which can effectively trap the coated particles. The first development extends the range of medium conductivities and frequencies at which the trapping of both particles is achievable, whereas the second development facilitates the selective deposition of particles along the surface of curved microelectrodes. Setting the medium conductivity to 2×10(-3) S/m and the frequency to 20 MHz, most of 5 μm particles are trapped at the entry region of the first microelectrode pair, whereas most of 1 μm particles are trapped at the tips, and this distinction facilitates their separation. The trapping of 1 μm particles can be improved by decreasing the frequency to 1.5 MHz. This study demonstrates how the integration of CNTs into microfluidic systems enables them to operate beyond their capabilities.

Abstract: Low melting point metals and alloys are the group of materials that combine metallic and liquid properties, simultaneously. The fascinating characteristics of liquid metals (LMs) including softness and high electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as their unique interfacial chemistry, have started to dominate various research disciplines. Utilization of LMs as responsive interfaces, enabling sensing in a flexible and versatile manner, is one of the most promising traits demonstrated for LMs. In the context of LMs-enabled sensors, gallium (Ga) and its alloys have emerged as multipurpose functional materials with many compelling physical and chemical properties. Responsiveness to different stimuli and easy-to-functionalize interfaces of Ga-based LMs make them ideal candidates for a variety of sensing applications. However, despite the vast capabilities of Ga-based LMs in sensing, applications of these materials for developing different sensors have not been fully explored. In the present review, we provide a comprehensive overview regarding the applications of Ga-based LMs in a wide range of sensing approaches that cover different physical and chemical sensors. The unique features of Ga-based LMs, which make them promising materials for sensing, are discussed in subsections followed by relevant case studies. Finally, challenges as well as the prospected future and developing motifs are highlighted for each type of LM-based sensors.

Abstract: The inner workings of the intestines, in which the body and microbiome intersect to influence gut function and systemic health, remain elusive. Carbon dioxide, hydrogen, methane and hydrogen sulfide, as well as a variety of trace gases, are generated by the chemical interactions and microbiota within the gut. Profiling of these intestinal gases and their responses to dietary changes can reveal the products and functions of the gut microbiota and their influence on human health. Indeed, different tools for measuring these intestinal gases have been developed, including newly developed gas-sensing capsule technology. Gases can, according to their type, concentration and volume, induce or relieve abdominal symptoms, and might also have physiological, pathogenic and therapeutic effects. Thus, profiling and modulating intestinal gases could be powerful tools for disease prevention and/or therapy. As the interactions between the microbiota, chemical constituents and fermentative substrates of the gut are principally influenced by dietary intake, altering the diet, which, in turn, changes gas profiles, is the main therapeutic approach for gastrointestinal disorders. An improved understanding of the complex interactions within the intestines that generate gases will enhance our ability to prevent, diagnose, treat and monitor many gastrointestinal disorders.

Boundary-Induced Auxiliary Features in Scattering-Type Near-Field Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract: Phonon-polaritons (PhPs) in layered crystals, including hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), have been investigated by combined scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Nevertheless, many of such s-SNOM-based FTIR spectra features remain unexplored, especially those originated from the impact of boundaries. Here we observe real-space PhP propagations in thin-layer hBN sheets either supported or suspended by s-SNOM imaging. Then with a high-power broadband IR laser source, we identify two major peaks and multiple auxiliary peaks in the near-field litude spectra, obtained using scattering-type near-field FTIR spectroscopy, from both supported and suspended hBN. The major PhP propagation interference peak moves toward the major in-plane phonon peak when the IR illumination moves away from the hBN edge. Specific differences between the auxiliary peaks in the near-field litude spectra from supported and suspended hBN sheets are investigated regarding different boundary conditions, associated with edges and substrate interfaces. The outcomes may be explored in heterostructures for advanced nanophotonic applications.
Wavefront Velocity Oscillations of Carbon-Nanotube-Guided Thermopower Waves: Nanoscale Alternating Current Sources

Abstract: The nonlinear coupling between exothermic chemical reactions and a nanowire or nanotube with large axial heat conduction results in a self-propagating thermal wave guided along the nanoconduit. The resulting reaction wave induces a concomitant thermopower wave of high power density (>7 kW/kg), resulting in an electrical current along the same direction. We develop the theory of such waves and analyze them experimentally, showing that for certain values of the chemical reaction kinetics and thermal parameters, oscillating wavefront velocities are possible. We demonstrate such oscillations experimentally using a cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine/multiwalled carbon nanotube system, which produces frequencies in the range of 400 to 5000 Hz. The propagation velocity oscillations and the frequency dispersion are well-described by Fourier's law with an Arrhenius source term accounting for reaction and a linear heat exchange with the nanotube scaffold. The frequencies are in agreement with oscillations in the voltage generated by the reaction. These thermopower oscillations may enable new types of nanoscale power and signal processing sources.

Abstract: The lack of understanding for precise synthesis and assembly of nano‐entities remains a major challenge for nanofabrication. Electrocrystallization of a charge‐transfer complex (CTC), tetrathiafulvalene bromide (TTF)Br, is studied on micro/nanoelectrodes for precision deposition of functional materials. The study reveals new insights into the entire CTC electrocrystallization process from the initial nanocluster nucleation to the final elongated crystals with hollow ends grown from the working electrode to the neighboring receiving electrode. On microelectrodes, the number of nucleation sites is reduced to one by lowering the applied overpotential or precursor concentration. Certain current–time transients exhibit significant induction periods prior to stable nucleus growth. The induction regime contains small fluctuating current spikes consistent with stochastic formation of precritical nanoclusters with lifetimes of 0.1–30 s and sizes of 20–160 nm. Electrochemical analyses further reveal rate, size distribution, and formation/dissipation dynamics of the nanoclusters. Crystal growth of (TTF)Br is further studied on triangular nanoelectrode patterns with thickness of 5–500 nm, which shows a mass‐transfer‐controlled process applicable for precision deposition of functional (TTF)Br crystals. This study, for the first time, establishes CTC nanoelectrochemistry as a platform technology for precise deposition of conductive crystal assemblies spanning the source and drain electrode for sensing applications.

Abstract: Few-layer two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum oxide nanoflakes are exfoliated using a grinding assisted liquid phase sonication exfoliation method. The sonication process is carried out in five different mixtures of water with both aprotic and protic solvents. We found that surface energy and solubility of mixtures play important roles in changing the thickness, lateral dimension, and synthetic yield of the nanoflakes. We demonstrate an increase in proton intercalation in 2D nanoflakes upon simulated solar light exposure. This results in substoichiometric flakes and a subsequent enhancement in free electron concentrations, producing plasmon resonances. Two plasmon resonance peaks associated with the thickness and the lateral dimension axes are observable in the s les, in which the plasmonic peak positions could be tuned by the choice of the solvent in exfoliating 2D molybdenum oxide. The extinction coefficients of the plasmonic absorption bands of 2D molybdenum oxide nanoflakes in all s les are found to be high (ε > 10(9) L mol(-1) cm(-1)). It is expected that the tunable plasmon resonances of 2D molybdenum oxide nanoflakes presented in this work can be used in future electronic, optical, and sensing devices.

Abstract: The exhibition of plasmon resonances in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor compounds is desirable for many applications. Here, by electrochemically intercalating lithium into 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoflakes, plasmon resonances in the visible and near UV wavelength ranges are achieved. These plasmon resonances are controlled by the high doping level of the nanoflakes after the intercalation, producing two distinct resonance peak areas based on the crystal arrangements. The system is also benchmarked for biosensing using bovine serum albumin. This work provides a foundation for developing future 2D MoS2 based biological and optical units.

Abstract: This paper describes the morphology, stoichiometry, microstructure and gas sensing properties of nanoclustered SnO(x) thin films prepared by Sn evaporation followed by a rheotaxial growth and thermal oxidation process. Electron microscopy was used to investigate, in detail, the evolution of the films as the oxidation temperature was increased. The results showed that the contact angle, perpendicular height, volume and microstructure of the clusters all changed significantly as a result of the thermal oxidation processes. Electron diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements revealed that after oxidation at a temperature of 600 °C, the Sn clusters were fully transformed into porous three-dimensional polycrystalline SnO(2) clusters. On the basis of these results, a prototype SnO(2) sensor was fabricated and sensing measurements were performed with H(2) and NO(2) gases. At operating temperatures of 150-200 °C the film produced measurable responses to concentrations of H(2) as low as 600 ppm and NO(2) as low as 500 ppb.

Abstract: Dielectrophoresis is a versatile tool for the sorting, immobilization, and characterization of cells in microfluidic systems. The performance of dielectrophoretic systems strongly relies on the configuration of microelectrodes, which produce a nonuniform electric field. However, once fabricated, the microelectrodes cannot be reconfigured to change the characteristics of the system. Here, we show that the reorientation of the microfluidic channel with respect to the microelectrodes can be readily utilized to alter the characteristics of the system. This enables us to change the location and density of immobilized viable cells across the channel, release viable cells along customized numbers of streams within the channel, change the deflection pattern of nonviable cells along the channel, and improve the sorting of viable and nonviable cells in terms of flow throughput and efficiency of the system. We demonstrate that the reorientation of the microfluidic channel is an effective tool to create versatile dielectrophoretic platforms using the same microelectrode design.

Abstract: Institution of a diet low in fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may lead to inadequate fiber intake. This trial aimed to investigate the effects of supplementing specific fibers concomitantly with a low FODMAP diet on relevant clinical and physiological indices in symptomatic patients with IBS. A double-blind crossover trial was conducted in which 26 patients with IBS were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 low FODMAP diets differing only in total fiber content: control, 23 g/d sugarcane bagasse, 33 g/d or fiber combination (sugarcane bagasse with resistant starch), 45 g/d. Each diet lasted 14 days with most food provided and ≥21 days' washout between. Endpoints were assessed during baseline and dietary interventions. From a median IBS Severity Scoring System total score at baseline of 305, all diets reduced median scores by >50 with no differences in rates of symptom response between the diets: control (57%), sugarcane bagasse (67%), fiber combination (48%) (P = .459). Stool output was ∼50% higher during the fiber-supplemented vs control diets (P < .001 for both). While there were no overall differences overall in stool characteristics, descriptors, and water content, or in gastrointestinal transit times, supplementation with sugarcane bagasse normalized both low stool water content and slow colonic transit from during the control diet. Concomitant supplementation of fibers during initiation of a low FODMAP diet did not alter symptomatic response in patients with IBS but augmented stool bulk and normalized low stool water content and slow transit. Resistant starch did not exert additional symptomatic benefits over sugarcane bagasse alone. (Australia and New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry Number, ACTRN12619000691145).

Abstract: Controlled actuation of soft objects with functional surfaces in aqueous environments presents opportunities for liquid phase electronics, novel assembled super-structures and unusual mechanical properties. We show the extraordinary electrochemically induced actuation of liquid metal droplets coated with nanoparticles, so-called "liquid metal marbles". We demonstrate that nanoparticle coatings of these marbles offer an extra dimension for affecting the bipolar electrochemically induced actuation. The nanoparticles can readily migrate along the surface of liquid metals, upon the application of electric fields, altering the capacitive behaviour and surface tension in a highly asymmetric fashion. Surprising actuation behaviours are observed illustrating that nanoparticle coatings can have a strong effect on the movement of these marbles. This significant novel phenomenon, combined with unique properties of liquid metal marbles, represents an exciting platform for enabling erse applications that cannot be achieved using rigid metal beads.

Dielectrophoretic manipulation and separation of microparticles using curved microelectrodes

Abstract: This paper presents the development and experimental analysis of a dielectrophoresis (DEP) system, which is used for the manipulation and separation of microparticles in liquid flow. The system is composed of arrays of microelectrodes integrated to a microchannel. Novel curved microelectrodes are symmetrically placed with respect to the centre of the microchannel with a minimum gap of 40 microm. Computational fluid dynamics method is utilised to characterise the DEP field and predict the dynamics of particles. The performance of the system is assessed with microspheres of 1, 5 and 12 microm diameters. When a high-frequency potential is applied to microelectrodes a spatially varying electric field is induced in the microchannel, which creates the DEP force. Negative-DEP behaviour is observed with particles being repelled from the microelectrodes. The particles of different dimensions experience different DEP forces and thus settle to separate equilibrium zones across the microchannel. Experiments demonstrate the capability of the system as a field flow fraction tool for sorting microparticles according to their dimensions and dielectric properties.

Abstract: We present a tuneable optical waveguide using dielectrophoretically controlled nanoparticles in microfluidics. Silicon dioxide nanoparticles of different sizes in de-ionized water are channelled through a microfluidic system. An array of microelectrodes generates the dielectrophoretic force to funnel nanoparticles, forming narrowbands at the center of the microfluidics at different applied voltages and frequencies. It is observed that these narrowbands either scatter or guide the coupled light under selected conditions. The realization of such a system offers exciting possibilities for the development of a new class of optofluidics, which are tuned by the positioning of nanoparticles on demand.

Abstract: Pt/nanostructured molybdenum oxide (MoO3)/SiC Schottky diode based gas sensors were fabricated for hydrogen (H2) gas sensing. Due to the enhanced performance, which is ascribed to the application of MoO3 nanostructures, these devices were used in reversed bias. MoO3 characterization by scanning electron microscopy showed morphology of randomly orientated nanoplatelets with thicknesses between 50 and 500 nm. An α-β mixed phase crystallographic structure of MoO3 was characterized by x-ray diffraction. At 180 °C, 1.343 V voltage shift in the reverse I-V curve and a Pt/MoO3 barrier height change of 20 meV were obtained after exposure to 1% H2 gas in synthetic air.

Abstract: Holey 2D metal oxides have shown great promise as functional materials for energy storage and catalysts. Despite impressive performance, their processing is challenged by the requirement of templates plus capping agents or high temperatures these materials also exhibit excessive thicknesses and low yields. The present work reports a metal-based coordination polymer (MCP) strategy to synthesize polycrystalline, holey, metal oxide (MO) nanosheets with thicknesses as low as two-unit cells. The process involves rapid exfoliation of bulk-layered, MCPs (Ce-, Ti-, Zr-based) into atomically thin MCPs at room temperature, followed by transformation into holey 2D MOs upon the removal of organic linkers in aqueous solution. Further, this work represents an extra step for decorating the holey nanosheets using precursors of transition metals to engineer their band alignments, establishing a route to optimize their photocatalysis. The work introduces a simple, high-yield, room-temperature, and template-free approach to synthesize ultrathin holey nanosheets with high-level functionalities.
Liquid Metal Droplet and Graphene Co-Fillers for Electrically Conductive Flexible Composites

Abstract: Colloidal liquid metal alloys of gallium, with melting points below room temperature, are potential candidates for creating electrically conductive and flexible composites. However, inclusion of liquid metal micro- and nanodroplets into soft polymeric matrices requires a harsh auxiliary mechanical pressing to rupture the droplets to establish continuous pathways for high electrical conductivity. However, such a destructive strategy reduces the integrity of the composites. Here, this problem is solved by incorporating small loading of nonfunctionalized graphene flakes into the composites. The flakes introduce cavities that are filled with liquid metal after only relatively mild press-rolling ( 30 kPa. The composites are used for forming flexible electrically-conductive tracks in electronic circuits with a self-healing property. The demonstrated application of co-fillers, together with liquid metal droplets, can be used for establishing electrically-conductive printable-composite tracks for future large-area flexible electronics.

Abstract: An initiator is applied to synthesize single-walled carbon nanotube olyaniline composite nanofibers for use as high-performance chemosensors. The composite nanofibers possess widely tunable conductivities (10(-4) to 10(2) S/cm) with up to 5.0 wt % single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) loadings. Chemosensors fabricated from the composite nanofibers synthesized with a 1.0 wt % SWCNT loading respond much more rapidly to low concentrations (100 ppb) of HCl and NH(3) vapors compared to polyaniline nanofibers alone (120 s vs 1000 s). These nanofibrillar SWCNT olyaniline composite nanostructures are promising materials for use as low-cost disposable sensors and as electrodes due to their widely tunable conductivities.
Exploring Electrical Conductivity of Thiolated Micro‐ and Nanoparticles of Gallium

Abstract: Nano‐/microparticles of gallium (Ga), as a low‐melting‐point metal, are extensively used in the fields of soft electronics and sensors to provide thermal and electrical conductivity. However, a passivating oxide layer can be formed on the surface of Ga nano‐/microparticles during the synthesis process. This oxide layer is removed by a secondary sintering step, especially mechanical sintering, which is generally not a controllable process, and compromises the integrity of the system. Herein, thiol molecules, 1‐butanethiol, thiophenol, and 4‐mercaptopyridine, that can functionalize the surface of Ga via sonication to reduce the oxidation of Ga surface are used. The resulting particles exhibit electrical conductivity based on metal–molecule junctions without the requirement for a sintering step. In particular, 4‐mercaptopyridine functionalized, thiolated Ga particles exhibit higher electrical conductivity compared to the other three thiolated Ga systems as the organic material conjugation provides conductive pathways for the mix. Subsequently, using these particle systems, soft devices are developed that can be used for gas, exhalation, and flex sensing. This study provides insights into the possibility of creating combinations of organic molecules with liquid metal‐based nano‐/microparticles to generate electrically conductive mixes and the prospects of fabricating multifunctional sensors.

Abstract: Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a photoluminescence (PL) material with unique properties. The recent demonstration of its PL, controlled by the intercalation of positive ions, can lead to many opportunities for employing this quasi-2D material in ion-related biological applications. Here, we present two representative models of biological systems that incorporate the ion-controlled PL of quasi-2D MoS2 nanoflakes. The ion exchange behaviors of these two models are investigated to reveal enzymatic activities and cell viabilities. While the ion intercalation of MoS2 in enzymatic activities is enabled via an external applied voltage, the intercalation of ions in cell viability investigations occurs in the presence of the intrinsic cell membrane potential.

Abstract: The remarkable properties of graphene have renewed interest in inorganic, two-dimensional materials with unique electronic and optical attributes. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are layered materials with strong in-plane bonding and weak out-of-plane interactions enabling exfoliation into two-dimensional layers of single unit cell thickness. Although TMDCs have been studied for decades, recent advances in nanoscale materials characterization and device fabrication have opened up new opportunities for two-dimensional layers of thin TMDCs in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. TMDCs such as MoS(2), MoSe(2), WS(2) and WSe(2) have sizable bandgaps that change from indirect to direct in single layers, allowing applications such as transistors, photodetectors and electroluminescent devices. We review the historical development of TMDCs, methods for preparing atomically thin layers, their electronic and optical properties, and prospects for future advances in electronics and optoelectronics.
Reductive exfoliation of substoichiometric MoS2bilayers using hydrazine salts

Abstract: Substoichiometric molybdenum disulphide (MoSx) nanosheets are successfully synthesised following a novel reductive route using hydrazine salts. The resulting two dimensional crystals are found to be highly monodispersed in thickness, forming exclusively 1.9 ± 0.2 nm thick bilayers. The lateral dimensions of the nanosheets are governed by the precursor bulk particle's size. Exploring a range of hydrazine derivatives with various degrees of steric hindrance leads to the conclusion that intercalation does not occur during the process and that exfoliation is instead facilitated by the reduction of Mo centres leading to the exfoliation of substoichiometric bilayers with distorted lattices. The lattice distortion is found to be persistent across all s les with XPS analysis pointing towards a S to Mo ratio of 1.2. The resulting material features an electronic bandgap of 2.1 eV, which is wider than that of pristine monolayer MoS2 with relatively longer radiative decay time.
Liquid metal/metal oxide frameworks with incorporated Ga2 O3 for photocatalysis

Abstract: Solvothermally synthesized Ga2O3 nanoparticles are incorporated into liquid metal/metal oxide (LM/MO) frameworks in order to form enhanced photocatalytic systems. The LM/MO frameworks, both with and without incorporated Ga2O3 nanoparticles, show photocatalytic activity due to a plasmonic effect where performance is related to the loading of Ga2O3 nanoparticles. Optimum photocatalytic efficiency is obtained with 1 wt % incorporation of Ga2O3 nanoparticles. This can be attributed to the sub-bandgap states of LM/MO frameworks, contributing to pseudo-ohmic contacts which reduce the free carrier injection barrier to Ga2O3.

Antibacterial Liquid Metals: Biofilm Treatment via Magnetic Activation

Abstract: Antibiotic resistance has made the treatment of biofilm-related infections challenging. As such, the quest for next-generation antimicrobial technologies must focus on targeted therapies to which pathogenic bacteria cannot develop resistance. Stimuli-responsive therapies represent an alternative technological focus due to their capability of delivering targeted treatment. This study provides a proof-of-concept investigation into the use of magneto-responsive gallium-based liquid metal (LM) droplets as antibacterial materials, which can physically damage, disintegrate, and kill pathogens within a mature biofilm. Once exposed to a low-intensity rotating magnetic field, the LM droplets become physically actuated and transform their shape, developing sharp edges. When placed in contact with a bacterial biofilm, the movement of the particles resulting from the magnetic field, coupled with the presence of nanosharp edges, physically ruptures the bacterial cells and the dense biofilm matrix is broken down. The antibacterial efficacy of the magnetically activated LM particles was assessed against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial biofilms. After 90 min over 99% of both bacterial species became nonviable, and the destruction of the biofilms was observed. These results will impact the design of next-generation, LM-based biofilm treatments.
A liquid metal reaction environment for the room-temperature synthesis of atomically thin metal oxides

Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) materials have a wide variety of potential applications in the electronics industry. However, certain compositions of 2D materials are difficult to obtain owing to the challenges in exfoliating thin sheets from bulk crystals. Zavabeti et al. exploited liquid metals to synthesize 2D Ga 2 O 3 , HfO 2 , Gd 2 O 3 , and Al 2 O 3 . The 2D sheets appear as a surface layer in gallium-based liquid metals after the Hf, Gd, or Al is dissolved into the bulk alloy. The 2D oxide that appears on the surface is the oxide with the lowest energy, suggesting that it should be possible to make other 2D oxides by using the same process. Science , this issue p. 332

Abstract: The nascent field of liquid metals, metals, and alloys of low melting points has provided opportunities for synthesizing low-dimensional materials. Located between transition- and non-metals in the periodic table, post-transition elements exhibit unique properties in particular low melting points. Taking on a liquid form at low temperature, post-transition liquid metals can be used as solvents for metallic solutes. The enigmatic surface of liquid metals is also ultra-active and smooth, offering opportunities for fabricating and templating two-dimensional (2D) films. So far, various 2D materials have been harvested from the surface of liquid metals including 2D metal compounds and nonmetallic materials. Utilizing different extraction and transfer techniques, the produced 2D films can be uniformly deposited on desired substrates at large lateral dimensions. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals underlying post-transition-elements-based liquid metals and alloys and explain the effect of atomic level electron configurations on their characteristics. We discuss the key physical properties of liquid metals including the origin of their low melting points and their high thermal and electrical conductivities. We illustrate their boundary-induced layering and oxidation as essential traits for creating 2D films. Afterward, the interfacial synthesis of 2D materials is depicted with the discussion of surface oxidation, reduction and exfoliation. We present different types of devices using liquid metal-induced 2D synthesis processes, including field-effect transistors, optoelectronic devices, systems that use 2D dielectric and conductive layers, and piezoelectric devices. Eventually, we discuss future prospects and outline how liquid metals can contribute to exciting future applications.

Abstract: The advent of optofluidic systems incorporating suspended particles has resulted in the emergence of novel applications. Such systems operate based on the fact that suspended particles can be manipulated using well-appointed active forces, and their motions, locations and local concentrations can be controlled. These forces can be exerted on both in idual and clusters of particles. Having the capability to manipulate suspended particles gives users the ability for tuning the physical and, to some extent, the chemical properties of the suspension media, which addresses the needs of various advanced optofluidic systems. Additionally, the incorporation of particles results in the realization of novel optofluidic solutions used for creating optical components and sensing platforms. In this review, we present different types of active forces that are used for particle manipulations and the resulting optofluidic systems incorporating them. These systems include optical components, optofluidic detection and analysis platforms, plasmonics and Raman systems, thermal and energy related systems, and platforms specifically incorporating biological particles. We conclude the review with a discussion of future perspectives, which are expected to further advance this rapidly growing field.

Abstract: Radiative forcing of methane (CH4) is significantly higher than carbon dioxide (CO2) and its enteric production by ruminant livestock is one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions. CH4 is also an important marker of farming productivity, because it is associated with the conversion of feed to product in livestock. Consequently, measurement of enteric CH4 is emerging as an important research topic. In this review, we briefly describe the conversion of carbohydrate to CH4 by the bacterial community within gut, and highlight some of the key host-microbiome interactions. We then provide a picture of current progress in techniques for measuring enteric CH4, the context in which these technologies are used, and the challenges faced. We also discuss solutions to existing problems and new approaches currently in development.

Abstract: Insights into metal-matrix interactions in atomically dispersed catalytic systems are necessary to exploit the true catalytic activity of isolated metal atoms. Distinct from catalytic atoms spatially separated but immobile in a solid matrix, here we demonstrate that a trace amount of platinum naturally dissolved in liquid gallium can drive a range of catalytic reactions with enhanced kinetics at low temperature (318 to 343 K). Molecular simulations provide evidence that the platinum atoms remain in a liquid state in the gallium matrix without atomic segregation and activate the surrounding gallium atoms for catalysis. When used for electrochemical methanol oxidation, the surface platinum atoms in the gallium-platinum system exhibit an activity of [Formula: see text] three orders of magnitude higher than existing solid platinum catalysts. Such a liquid catalyst system, with a dynamic interface, sets a foundation for future exploration of high-throughput catalysis.

Abstract: We report a green carbon capture and conversion technology offering scalability and economic viability for mitigating CO 2 emissions. The technology uses suspensions of gallium liquid metal to reduce CO 2 into carbonaceous solid products and O 2 at near room temperature. The nonpolar nature of the liquid gallium interface allows the solid products to instantaneously exfoliate, hence keeping active sites accessible. The solid co-contributor of silver-gallium rods ensures a cyclic sustainable process. The overall process relies on mechanical energy as the input, which drives nano dimensional triboelectrochemical reactions. By altering the secondary solvent and changing the reactor height, the dissolution and conversion efficiency can be tuned. The optimum reactor height is only 27 cm, when gallium/silver fluoride mix at 7:1 mass ratio is employed as the reaction material. At CO 2 input of ~8 sccm, 92% efficiency was obtained at the record low input energy of 228.5 kW∙h for the capture and conversion of a tonne of CO 2 . The potential impact of this green technology is remarkable, likely benefiting a variety of industries and offering an economical solution for CO 2 capture and conversion.

Doping Process of 2D Materials Based on the Selective Migration of Dopants to the Interface of Liquid Metals

Abstract: The introduction of trace impurities within the doping processes of semiconductors is still a technological challenge for the electronics industries. By taking advantage of the selective enrichment of liquid metal interfaces, and harvesting the doped metal oxide semiconductor layers, the complexity of the process can be mitigated and a high degree of control over the outcomes can be achieved. Here, a mechanism of natural filtering for the preparation of doped 2D semiconducting sheets based on the different migration tendencies of metallic elements in the bulk competing for enriching the interfaces is proposed. As a model, liquid metal alloys with different weight ratios of Sn and Bi in the bulk are employed for harvesting Bi 2 O 3 ‐doped SnO nanosheets. In this model, Sn shows a much stronger tendency than Bi to occupy surface sites of the Bi–Sn alloys, even at the very high concentrations of Bi in the bulk. This provides the opportunity for creating SnO 2D sheets with tightly controlled Bi 2 O 3 dopants. By way of ex le, it is demonstrated how such nanosheets could be made selective to both reducing and oxidizing environmental gases. The process demonstrated here offers significant opportunities for future synthesis and fabrication processes in the electronics industries.

Abstract: A generalized low-temperature approach for fabricating high aspect ratio nanorod arrays of alkali metal-TCNQ (7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) charge transfer complexes at 140 °C is demonstrated. This facile approach overcomes the current limitation associated with fabrication of alkali metal-TCNQ complexes that are based on physical vapor deposition processes and typically require an excess of 800 °C. The compatibility of soft substrates with the proposed low-temperature route allows direct fabrication of NaTCNQ and LiTCNQ nanoarrays on in idual cotton threads interwoven within the 3D matrix of textiles. The applicability of these textile-supported TCNQ-based organic charge transfer complexes toward optoelectronics and gas sensing applications is established.

Physisorption-Based Charge Transfer in Two-Dimensional SnS2 for Selective and Reversible NO2 Gas Sensing

Abstract: Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a gas species that plays an important role in certain industrial, farming, and healthcare sectors. However, there are still significant challenges for NO2 sensing at low detection limits, especially in the presence of other interfering gases. The NO2 selectivity of current gas-sensing technologies is significantly traded-off with their sensitivity and reversibility as well as fabrication and operating costs. In this work, we present an important progress for selective and reversible NO2 sensing by demonstrating an economical sensing platform based on the charge transfer between physisorbed NO2 gas molecules and two-dimensional (2D) tin disulfide (SnS2) flakes at low operating temperatures. The device shows high sensitivity and superior selectivity to NO2 at operating temperatures of less than 160 °C, which are well below those of chemisorptive and ion conductive NO2 sensors with much poorer selectivity. At the same time, excellent reversibility of the sensor is demonstrated, which has rarely been observed in other 2D material counterparts. Such impressive features originate from the planar morphology of 2D SnS2 as well as unique physical affinity and favorable electronic band positions of this material that facilitate the NO2 physisorption and charge transfer at parts per billion levels. The 2D SnS2-based sensor provides a real solution for low-cost and selective NO2 gas sensing.

Abstract: Accurate definition of the gastroduodenal and ileocaecal junctions (GDJ, ICJ) is essential for the measurement of regional transit times. To compare the assessment of these landmarks using the novel gas-sensing capsule and validated wireless motility capsule (WMC), and to evaluate intra-subject variance in transit times METHODS: Healthy subjects ingested the gas-sensing capsule and WMC tandemly in random order. Inter-observer agreement was evaluated by intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). Agreement between the paired devices' transit times was assessed using Bland-Altman analysis coefficient of variation was performed to express intra-in idual variance in transit times. Similar analyses were completed with tandemly ingested gas-sensing capsules. The inter-observer agreement for landmarks for both capsules was excellent (mean ICC ≥0.97) in 50 studies. The GDJ was identifiable in 92% of the gas-sensing capsule studies versus 82% of the WMC studies (p = 0.27) the ICJ in 96% versus 84%, respectively (p = 0.11). In the primary cohort (n = 26), median regional transit times differed by less than 6 min between paired capsules. Bland-Altman revealed a bias of -0.12 (95% limits of agreement, -0.94 to 0.70) hours for GDJ and - 0.446 (-2.86 to 2.0) hours for ICJ. Similar results were found in a demographically distinct validation cohort (n = 24). For tandemly ingested gas-sensing capsules, coefficients of variation of transit times were 11%-35%, which were similar to variance between the paired gas-sensing capsule and WMC, as were the biases. The capsules were well tolerated. Key anatomical landmarks are accurately identified with the gas-sensing capsule in healthy in iduals. Intra-in idual differences in transit times between capsules are probably due to physiological factors. Studies in populations with gastrointestinal diseases are now required.

Abstract: Two different morphologies of nanotextured molybdenum oxide were deposited by thermal evaporation. By measuring their field emission (FE) properties, an enhancement factor was extracted. Subsequently, these films were coated with a thin layer of Pt to form Schottky contacts. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics showed low magnitude reverse breakdown voltages, which we attributed to the localized electric field enhancement. An enhancement factor was obtained from the I-V curves. We will show that the enhancement factor extracted from the I-V curves is in good agreement with the enhancement factor extracted from the FE measurements.

Abstract: We demonstrate a facile localized reduction approach to synthesizing a Au nanoparticle-decorated Keggin ion/TiO(2) photococatalyst for improved solar light photocatalysis application. This has been achieved by exploiting the ability of TiO(2)-bound Keggin ions to act as a UV-switchable, highly localized reducing agent. Notably, the approach proposed here does not lead to contamination of the resultant cocatalyst with free metal nanoparticles during aqueous solution-based synthesis. The study shows that for Keggin ions (phosphotungstic acid, PTA), being photoactive molecules, the presence of both Au nanoparticles and PTA on the TiO(2) surface in a cocatalytic system can have a dramatic effect on increasing the photocatalytic performance of the composite system, as opposed to a TiO(2) surface directly decorated with metal nanoparticles without a sandwiched PTA layer. The remarkable increase in the photocatalytic performance of these materials toward the degradation of a model organic Congo red dye correlates to an increase of 2.7-fold over that of anatase TiO(2) after adding Au to it and 4.3-fold after introducing PTA along with Au to it. The generalized localized reduction approach to preparing TiO(2)-PTA-Au cocatalysts reported here can be further extended to other similar systems, wherein a range of metal nanoparticles in the presence of different Keggin ions can be utilized. The composites reported here may have wide potential implications toward the degradation of organic species and solar cell applications.

Abstract: Liquid metal co-injected with electrolyte through a microfluidic flow-focusing orifice forms droplets with diameters and production frequencies controlled in real time by voltage. Applying voltage to the liquid metal controls the interfacial tension via a combination of electrochemistry and electrocapillarity. This simple and effective method can instantaneously tune the size of the microdroplets, which has applications in composites, catalysts, and microsystems.

Liquid-Metal-Enabled Mechanical-Energy-Induced CO2 Conversion

Abstract: A green carbon capture and conversion technology offering scalability and economic viability for mitigating CO 2 emissions is reported. The technology uses suspensions of gallium liquid metal to reduce CO 2 into carbonaceous solid products and O 2 at near room temperature. The nonpolar nature of the liquid gallium interface allows the solid products to instantaneously exfoliate, hence keeping active sites accessible. The solid co‐contributor of silver–gallium rods ensures a cyclic sustainable process. The overall process relies on mechanical energy as the input, which drives nano‐dimensional triboelectrochemical reactions. When a gallium/silver fluoride mix at 7:1 mass ratio is employed to create the reaction material, 92% efficiency is obtained at a remarkably low input energy of 230 kWh (excluding the energy used for dissolving CO 2 ) for the capture and conversion of a tonne of CO 2 . This green technology presents an economical solution for CO 2 emissions.
Dielectrophoresis-Raman spectroscopy system for analysing suspended nanoparticles

Abstract: A microfluidic dielectrophoresis platform consisting of curved microelectrodes was developed and integrated with a Raman spectroscopy system. The electrodes were patterned on a quartz substrate, which has insignificant Raman response, and integrated with a microfluidic channel that was imprinted in poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS). We will show that this novel integrated system can be efficiently used for the determination of suspended particle types and the direct mapping of their spatial concentrations. We will also illustrate the system's unique advantages over conventional optical systems. Nanoparticles of tungsten trioxide (WO(3)) and polystyrene were used in the investigations, as they are Raman active and can be homogeneously suspended in water.

Impact of Minor Alloy Components on the Electrocapillarity and Electrochemistry of Liquid Metal Fractals

Abstract: Exploring and controlling surface tension‐driven phenomena in liquid metals may lead to unprecedented possibilities for next‐generation microfluidics, electronics, catalysis, and materials synthesis. In pursuit of these goals, the impact of minor constituents within liquid alloys is largely overlooked. Herein, it is showed that the presence of a fraction of solute metals such as tin, bismuth, and zinc in liquid gallium can significantly influence their electrocapillarity and electrochemistry. The instability‐driven fractal formation of liquid alloy droplets is investigated with different solutes and reveals the formation of distinctive non‐branched droplets, unstable fractals, and stable fractal modes under controlled voltage and alkaline solution conditions. In their in idually unique fractal morphology diagrams, different liquid alloys demonstrate significantly shifted voltage thresholds in transition between the three fractal modes, depending on the choice of the solute metal. Surface tension measurements, cycle voltammetry and surface compositional characterizations provide strong evidence that the minor alloy components drastically alter the surface tension, surface electrochemical oxidation, and oxide dissolution processes that govern the droplet deformation and instability dynamics. The findings that minor components are able to regulate liquid alloys’ surface tensions, surface element distributions and electrochemical activities offer great promises for harnessing the tunability and functionality of liquid metals.
