Abstract: The thermal and flame retardancy properties of polypropylene/fullerene (PP/C(60)) nanocomposites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and cone calorimetry with the C(60) loading varied from 0.5 to 2% by weight. Dispersion of C(60) in the PP matrix was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and optical microscopy (OM). TGA and DSC results showed that the presence of C(60) could remarkably enhance the thermal property and cone calorimeter measurements suggested that C(60) could to some extent reduce the flammability of PP, with a significant reduction in peak heat release rate and a much longer time to ignition. Furthermore, the larger the loading level of C(60), the better the flame retardancy property of PP/C(60) nanocomposites. The flame retardation mechanism and corresponding model were proposed with the help of rheological measurements, TEM and x-ray diffraction. C(60) reduced the flammability of PP by trapping free radicals in the gas phase and in situ forming a gelled-ball crosslink network to improve the flame retardancy of PP in the condensed phase. Finally, this suggested mechanism was supported by the results of advanced rheological extended systems (ARES), gel content, infrared spectrum, OM, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements.

Stretchable, Ultratough, and Intrinsically Self‐Extinguishing Elastomers with Desirable Recyclability

Abstract: Advanced elastomers are increasingly used in emerging areas, for ex le, flexible electronics and devices, and these real‐world applications often require elastomers to be stretchable, tough and fire safe. However, to date there are few successes in achieving such a performance portfolio due to their different governing mechanisms. Herein, a stretchable, supertough, and self‐extinguishing polyurethane elastomers by introducing dynamic π – π stacking motifs and phosphorus‐containing moieties are reported. The resultant elastomer shows a large break strain of ≈2260% and a record‐high toughness (ca. 460 MJ m −3 ), which arises from its dynamic microphase‐separated microstructure resulting in increased entropic elasticity, and strain‐hardening at large strains. The elastomer also exhibits a self‐extinguishing ability thanks to the presence of both phosphorus‐containing units and π – π stacking interactions. Its promising applications as a reliable yet recyclable substrate for strain sensors are demonstrated. The work will help to expedite next‐generation sustainable advanced elastomers for flexible electronics and devices applications.

Abstract: Surface-initiated graft polymerization on multi-walled carbon nanotubes pretreated with a corona discharge at atmospheric pressure was explored. The mechanism of the corona-discharge-induced graft polymerization is discussed. The results indicate that MWCNTs were encapsulated by poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA), demonstrating the formation of PGMA-grafted MWCNTs (PGMA-g-MWCNTs), with a grafting ratio of about 22 wt%. The solubility of PGMA-g-MWCNTs in ethanol was dramatically improved compared to pristine MWCNTs, which could contribute to fabricating high-performance polymer/MWCNTs nanocomposites in the future. Compared with most plasma processes, which operate at low pressures, corona discharge has the merit of working at atmospheric pressure.

Abstract: In this work, we report the synthesis and polymerization performances of terpenoid‐derived c horic anhydride (CA). Utilizing simple organo‐base t BuP 2 as the catalyst, CA can polymerize with various epoxides by efficient and controlled ring‐opening alternating copolymerization (ROAC) to afford perfectly alternating poly(CA‐ alt ‐epoxide). Kinetic study shows that the polymerization proceeds following zero‐order dependence on the concentration of CA. The self‐switchable terpolymerization from the mixture of CA, propylene oxide (PO) and ε ‐caprolactone (CL) is conducted under the catalysis of t BuP 2 . First, ROAC of CA and PO is carried out exclusively with benzyl alcohol as initiator. Then, block copolymer (BCP) poly(CA‐ alt ‐PO)‐ b ‐PCL is obtained via the sequential polymerizations after the complete consumption of CA. The followed ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of CL is initiated by the terminal hydroxyl of the ROAC‐resulted poly(CA‐ alt ‐PO) polyester without external stimulus. During the process, the excess PO compound remains intact. The one‐pot synthesis displays distinct living nature and perfect chemoselectivity. The as‐prepared terpenoid‐derived alternating and BCP's exhibit elevated thermal properties.

Rethinking the pathway to sustainable fire retardants

Abstract: Flame retardants are currently used in a wide range of industry sectors for saving lives and property by mitigating fire hazards. The growing fire safety requirements for materials boost an escalating demand for consumption of fire retardants. This has significantly driven both the industry and scientific community to pursue sustainable fire retardants, but what makes a sustainable flame retardant? Here an overview of recent advances in sustainable flame retardants is offered, and their renewable raw materials, green synthesis and life cycle assessments are highlighted. A discussion on key challenges that hinder the innovation of fire retardants and design principles for creating truly sustainable yet cost‐effective fire retardants are also presented. This short work is expected to help drive the development of sustainable, cost‐effective fire retardants, and expedite the creation of a more sustainable and safer society.

Abstract: Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were decorated with fullerene (C(60)) via a three-step chemical functionalization, with the goal of combining their unique physical and chemical characteristics and simultaneously improving the solubility of CNTs in organic solvents. C(60) molecules, about 0.67% by molecule, were homogeneously bonded onto the surface of the CNTs. Electron microscopy clearly shows that C(60) molecules are introduced onto the surface of the CNTs, and this is also evidenced by their UV-VIS absorption spectra. Cone calorimetry measurements showed that compared with pristine CNTs, fullerene-decorated CNTs further reduced the flammability of polypropylene, which may be due to the free-radical-trapping effect of C(60) and the barrier effect of the CNT network.

Abstract: Polymeric materials are ubiquitously utilized in modern society and continuously improve quality of life. Unfortunately, most of them suffer from intrinsic flammability, significantly limiting their practical applications. Fundamentally, free‐radical reaction is a critical “trigger” for their thermal pyrolysis and following combustion process regardless of the anaerobic thermal pyrolysis in the condensed phase or aerobic combustion of polymers in the gaseous phase. The addition of free radical scavengers represents a promising and effective means to enhance the fire safety of polymeric materials. This review aims to offer a state‐of‐the‐art overview on the creation of fire‐retardant polymeric nanocomposites by adding fire retardants with an ability to trap free radicals. Their specific modes of action (condensed‐phase action, gaseous‐phase action, and dual‐phases action) and performances in some typical polymers are reviewed and discussed in detail. Following this, some key challenges associated with these free‐radical capturers are discussed, and design strategies are also proposed. This review provides some insights into the modes of action of free radical capturing agents and paves the avenue for the design of advanced fire‐retardant polymeric nanocomposites for expanded real‐world applications in industries.

Abstract: Native cellulose nanofibers with high strength ratio may create an alternative as the blade material for wind power field. In this work, cellulose nanofibers (CN) with high L/D ratio was fabricated by combined biological treatment and mechanical disintegration processes. Then, we created a high-performance cellulose layered nanocomposites via layer by layer (LBL) assembling strategy. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations show that common paper pulp exhibits a nearly spherical or amorphous structure, while as-made cellulose nanofibers displays a high aspect ratio, with a length of ca. 10~100 μm and a diameter of ca. 30~100 nm. However, some relative big fibres bundles are still observed. Mechanical measurements demonstrate that the tensile strength, Young’s modulus and elongation at break of layered CN nanocomposites (CNLC) reach 114MPa. 7.0GPa and 68 %,respectively, while only 63MPa, 3.3 GPa and 27 % for layered common paper pulp composites (PFLC). Flexural tests results show that CNLC gives a flexural strength and modulus of 263 MPa and 19 GPa, while only 114 MPa and 11 GPa for PFLC. Fracture surface observations indicate that though layered structure can be observed for both PFLC and CNLC, much thinner layer and long fibrous structure only exist in CNLC, which results in high mechanical performance.
Fire Intumescent, High-Temperature Resistant, Mechanically Flexible Graphene Oxide Network for Exceptional Fire Shielding and Ultra-Fast Fire Warning

Abstract: Smart fire alarm sensor (FAS) materials with mechanically robust, excellent flame retardancy as well as ultra-sensitive temperature-responsive capability are highly attractive platforms for fire safety application. However, most reported FAS materials can hardly provide sensitive, continuous and reliable alarm signal output due to their undesirable temperature-responsive, flame-resistant and mechanical performances. To overcome these hurdles, herein, we utilize the multi-amino molecule, named HCPA, that can serve as triple-roles including cross-linker, fire retardant and reducing agent for decorating graphene oxide (GO) sheets and obtaining the GO/HCPA hybrid networks. Benefiting from the formation of multi-interactions in hybrid network, the optimized GO/HCPA network exhibits significant increment in mechanical strength, e.g., tensile strength and toughness increase of ~ 2.3 and ~ 5.7 times, respectively, compared to the control one. More importantly, based on P and N doping and promoting thermal reduction effect on GO network, the excellent flame retardancy (withstanding ~ 1200 °C flame attack), ultra-fast fire alarm response time (~ 0.6 s) and ultra-long alarming period ( 600 s) are obtained, representing the best comprehensive performance of GO-based FAS counterparts. Furthermore, based on GO/HCPA network, the fireproof coating is constructed and applied in polymer foam and exhibited exceptional fire shielding performance. This work provides a new idea for designing and fabricating desirable FAS materials and fireproof coatings.

Bioinspired, Highly Adhesive, Nanostructured Polymeric Coatings for Superhydrophobic Fire-Extinguishing Thermal Insulation Foam

Abstract: Lightweight polymeric foam is highly attractive as thermal insulation materials for energy-saving buildings but is plagued by its inherent flammability. Fire-retardant coatings are suggested as an effective means to solve this problem. However, most of the existing fire-retardant coatings suffer from poor interfacial adhesion to polymeric foam during use. In nature, snails and tree frogs exhibit strong adhesion to a variety of surfaces by interfacial hydrogen-bonding and mechanical interlocking, respectively. Inspired by their adhesion mechanisms, we herein rationally design fire-retardant polymeric coatings with phase-separated micro/nanostructures via a facile radical copolymerization of hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) and sodium vinylsulfonate (VS). The resultant waterborne poly(VS- co -HEA) copolymers exhibit strong interfacial adhesion to rigid polyurethane (PU) foam and other substrates, better than most of the current adhesives because of the combination of interfacial hydrogen-bonding and mechanical interlocking. Besides a superhydrophobic feature, the poly(VS- co -HEA)-coated PU foam can self-extinguish a flame, exhibiting a desired V-0 rating during vertical burning and low heat and smoke release due to its high charring capability, which is superior to its previous counterparts. Moreover, the foam thermal insulation is well-preserved and agrees well with theoretical calculations. This work offers a facile biomimetic strategy for creating advanced adhesive fire-retardant polymeric coatings for many flammable substrates.

Abstract: Although considerable progress has been achieved to create advanced polymer nanocomposites using nanocarbons including fullerene (C60) and graphene, it remains a major challenge to effectively disperse them in a polymer matrix and to fully exert their extraordinary properties. Here we report a novel approach to fabricate the C60@graphene nanocarbon hybrid (C60: ~47.9 wt%, graphene: ~35.1%) via three-step reactions. The presence of C60 on a graphene sheet surface can effectively prevent the aggregation of the latter which in turn helps the dispersion of the former in a polymer matrix during melt-processing. C60@graphene is found to be uniformly dispersed in a polypropylene (PP) matrix. Compared with pristine C60 or graphene, C60@graphene further improves the thermal stability and mechanical properties of PP. The incorporation of 2.0 wt% C60@graphene (relative to PP) can remarkably increase the initial degradation temperature by around 59 ° C and simultaneously enhance the tensile strength and Young's modulus by 67% and 76%, respectively, all of which are higher than those of corresponding PP/C60 (graphene) nanocomposites. These significant performance improvements are mainly due to the free-radical-trapping effect of C60, and the thermal barrier and reinforcing effects of graphene nanosheets as well as the effective stress load transfer. This work provides a new methodology to design multifunctional nanohybrids for creating advanced materials.

Abstract: In the presented work, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were successfully wrapped with alkli lignin. Both transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations show that the CNTs are coated with a layer of lignin, which is also verified by Raman spectra. SEM images demonstrate that lignin-wrapped CNTs (lignin- w -CNTs) can more uniformly dispersed in ABS matrix relative to pristine CNTs. Moreover, compared with CNTs and lignin, incorporating lignin- w -CNTs results in slightly higher tensile stress at the same loading level.

Dynamic Nanoconfinement Enabled Highly Stretchable and Supratough Polymeric Materials with Desirable Healability and Biocompatibility

Abstract: Lightweight polymeric materials are highly attractive platforms for many potential industrial applications in aerospace, soft robots, and biological engineering fields. For these real‐world applications, it is vital for them to exhibit a desirable combination of great toughness, large ductility, and high strength together with desired healability and biocompatibility. However, existing material design strategies usually fail to achieve such a performance portfolio owing to their different and even mutually exclusive governing mechanisms. To overcome these hurdles, herein, for the first time a dynamic hydrogen‐bonded nanoconfinement concept is proposed, and the design of highly stretchable and supratough biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with well‐dispersed dynamic nanoconfinement phases induced by hydrogen‐bond (H‐bond) crosslinking is demonstrated. Because of H‐bond crosslinking and dynamic nanoconfinement, the as‐prepared PVA nanocomposite film exhibits a world‐record toughness of 425 ± 31 MJ m −3 in combination with a tensile strength of 98 MPa and a large break strain of 550%, representing the best of its kind and even outperforming most natural and artificial materials. In addition, the final polymer exhibits a good self‐healing ability and biocompatibility. This work affords new opportunities for creating mechanically robust, healable, and biocompatible polymeric materials, which hold great promise for applications, such as soft robots and artificial ligaments.

Abstract: The development of high‐efficiency catalysts for carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is an important strategy to solve the current energy crisis. In this paper, solid‐phase exfoliation and electrostatic self‐assembly strategies are developed to couple ultrathin NiFe‐layered‐double‐hydroxide nanosheets and carbon nanotubes (CNT@NiFe‐LDH NS) as an OER catalyst. Then, NiFe nanoparticles anchored on the N‐doped CNT (CNT‐N‐NiFe) for electrocatalyst of CO 2 RR is synthesized via pyrolysis of a mixture of CNT@NiFe‐LDH NS and melamine in a nitrogen atmosphere at 750 °C, utilizing the ultrathin NiFe‐LDH NS as a metal source and CNT as the framework. CNT@NiFe‐LDH NS nanohybrid exhibits a better catalytic activity for OER (with an overpotential of 270 mV at the current density of 20 mA cm –2 and remarkably stable durability) than Bulk NiFe‐LDH in 1 m KOH. Moreover, the CNT‐N‐NiFe catalyst exhibits a Faradaic efficiency of ≈82.6% for the reduction of CO 2 to CO at −0.7 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode) with a current density of CO 10.2 mA cm –2 . The method of preparing CO 2 RR catalysts provides a new idea of the preparation of bimetallic CO 2 RR electrocatalysts.
Bioinspired Strategy to Reinforce PVA with Improved Toughness and Thermal Properties via Hydrogen-Bond Self-Assembly

Abstract: Despite the high strength and stiffness of polymer nanocomposites, they usually display lower deformability and toughness relative to their matrices. Spider silk features exceptionally high stiffness and toughness via the hierarchical architecture based on hydrogen-bond (H-bond) assembly. Inspired by this intriguing phenomenon, we here exploit melamine (MA) to reinforce poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) via H-bond self-assembly at a molecular level. Our results have shown that due to the formation of physical cross-link network based on H-bond assembly between MA and PVA, yield strength, Young's modulus, extensibility, and toughness of PVA are improved by 22, 25, 144, and 200% with 1.0 wt % MA, respectively. Moreover, presence of MA can enhance the thermal stability of PVA to a great extent, even exceeding some nanofillers (e.g., graphene). This work provides a facile method to improve the mechanical properties of polymers via H-bond self-assembly.

Abstract: Corona discharge treatment at atmospheric pressure was applied to initiate the graft polymerization of 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate onto the surface of multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The results indicated that MWCNTs were encapsulated by poly(2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA). The blue shift and the increased I D / I G value of the Raman spectra confirmed the covalent attachment of PHEMA onto the surface of the MWCNTs. The grafting degree depended on the processing time of corona discharge, as demonstrated by thermogravimetric analysis. The dispersibility of the PHEMA grafted MWCNTs (PHEMA ‐g‐ CNTs) in ethanol was dramatically improved. It was also found that PHEMA ‐g‐ CNTs can improve the dynamic mechanical and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites more effectively than the pristine MWCNTs. magnified image

Abstract: High energy and power density alkali‐ion (i.e., Li + , Na + , and K + ) batteries (AIBs), especially lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), are being ubiquitously used for both large‐ and small‐scale energy storage, and powering electric vehicles and electronics. However, the increasing LIB‐triggered fires due to thermal runaways have continued to cause significant injuries and casualties as well as enormous economic losses. For this reason, to date, great efforts have been made to create reliable fire‐safe AIBs through advanced materials design, thermal management, and fire safety characterization. In this review, the recent progress is highlighted in the battery design for better thermal stability and electrochemical performance, and state‐of‐the‐art fire safety evaluation methods. The key challenges are also presented associated with the existing materials design, thermal management, and fire safety evaluation of AIBs. Future research opportunities are also proposed for the creation of next‐generation fire‐safe batteries to ensure their reliability in practical applications.

Probing chemical changes in holocellulose and lignin of timbers in ancient buildings

Abstract: Wooden structures in China’s ancient buildings hold highly historical and cultural values. There is an urgent need to repair and replace the damaged wooden structures after hundreds and thousands of years of exposure to weather. Unfortunately, to date there is still a lack of insightful understanding on how the chemical structure, composition, and micro-morphology evolve over the long-term natural aging before artificial ancient timbers can be developed. This work aims to systematically examine the outer surface, middle layer, and inner surface of the same piece of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolate) collected from an ancient Chinese building. Based on qualitative and quantitative analysis, both cellulose and hemicellulose in aged woods are found to experience significant degrees of degradation. The crystalline regions of cellulose are also determined to undergo moderate degradation as compared to the control fresh wood. In comparison, the lignin basically remains unchanged and its content in the inner layer slightly increases, as evidenced by more free phenol groups determined. Relative to the outer and inner layer, the middle layer of the ancient wood shows the lowest degree of degradation close to that of the fresh wood. This work offers guidelines for fabricating artificial ancient woods to repair the destroyed ones in China’s ancient architectures.

Abstract: Small organic multiamine and multihydroxyl molecules have great potential for enhancing overall properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) through the cross-linking effect of hydrogen bonds. However, experimentally there remains a remarkable lack of insightful understanding of the cross-linking effect on a molecular level. In the work, we report molecular dynamics simulations to reveal the cross-linking effect of hydrogen bonds of tetraaminopyrimidine (4N-2456) molecules on the structure, chain dynamics and mechanical properties of the PVA matrix. It was found that the addition of 4N-2456 leads to a nonlinear decrease of the free volume of PVA. A critical concentration of 4N-2456, about 5 wt%, was identified, resulting in the formation of 4N-2456 clusters. At this concentration, the PVA chains show the relatively slow mobility, the higher glass transition temperature and elastic modulus. Further increasing the 4N-2456 concentration enhances aggregation, and conversely weakens the interactions of hydrogen bonds between the PVA chains. Our work offers an understanding of how the 4N-2456 molecules influence the PVA chain dynamics and mechanical properties of the PVA matrix on molecular level.

Abstract: It has always been critical to develop high-performance polymeric materials with exceptional mechanical strength and toughness, thermal stability, and even healable properties for meeting performance requirements in industry. Conventional chemical cross-linking leads to enhanced mechanical strength and thermostability at the expense of extensibility due to mutually exclusive mechanisms. Such major challenges have recently been addressed by using noncovalent cross-linking of reversible multiple hydrogen-bonds (H-bonds) that widely exist in biological materials, such as silk and muscle. Recent decades have witnessed the development of many tailor-made high-performance H-bond cross-linked polymeric materials. Here, recent advances in H-bond cross-linking strategies are reviewed for creating high-performance polymeric materials. H-bond cross-linking of polymers can be realized via i) self-association of interchain multiple H-bonding interactions or specific H-bond cross-linking motifs, such as 2-ureido-4-pyrimidone units with self-complementary quadruple H-bonds and ii) addition of external cross-linkers, including small molecules, nanoparticles, and polymer aggregates. The resultant cross-linked polymers normally exhibit tunable high strength, large extensibility, improved thermostability, and healable capability. Such performance portfolios enable these advanced polymers to find many significant cutting-edge applications. Major challenges facing existing H-bond cross-linking strategies are discussed, and some promising approaches for designing H-bond cross-linked polymeric materials in the future are also proposed.

Abstract: In the presented paper, diethanol amine is employed to plasticize corn starch, and plasticized starch is incorporated into polypropylene to create semibio-based composites with the aid of compatibilizer, maleic anhydride-grafted PP (PPMA). Compared with PP/starch blend, the presence of diethanol amine changes the morphology and increases the plasticity of starch due to the reduction effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. Adding PPMA could reduce the dispersed size of starch granules in the polymer matrix due to in situ reactive compatibilization. Addition of 30 wt% PPMA decreases the starch granules size from ~10 μm to ~5 μm, and increases the tensile strength from 16 MPa for PP lasticized starch to 30 MPa, increased by 87.5%. Thus, as-created bio-composites with improved mechanical properties will find many potential applications such as packaging.
Electrochemically Stable Cobalt–Zinc Mixed Oxide/Hydroxide Hierarchical Porous Film Electrode for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitor

Abstract: Construction of electrochemically stable positive materials is still a key challenge to accomplish high rate performance and long cycling life of asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). Herein, a novel cobalt–zinc mixed oxide/hydroxide (CoZn-MOH) hierarchical porous film electrode was facilely fabricated based on a cobalt–zinc-based metal–organic framework for excellent utilization in ASC. The as-constructed hierarchical porous film supported on conductive Ni foam possesses a rough surface and abundant macropores and mesopores, which allow fast electron transport, better exposure of electrochemically active sites, and facile electrolyte access and ion diffusion. Owing to these structural merits in collaboration, the CoZn-MOH electrode prepared with a zinc feeding ratio up to 45% at 110 min of heating time (CoZn-MOH-45-110) exhibited a high specific capacitance of 380.4 F·g−1, remarkable rate capability (83.6% retention after 20-fold current increase), and outstanding cycling performances (96.5% retention after 10,000 cycles), which exceed the performances of similar active electrodes. Moreover, an ASC based on this CoZn-MOH-45-110 electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 158.8 F·g−1, an impressive energy density of 45.8 Wh·kg−1, superior rate capability (83.1% retention after 50-fold current increase), and satisfactory cycling stability (87.9% capacitance retention after 12,000 cycles).
Granular Nanostructure: A Facile Biomimetic Strategy for the Design of Supertough Polymeric Materials with High Ductility and Strength

Abstract: The realization of high strength, large ductility, and great toughness for polymeric materials is a vital factor for practical applications in industry. Unfortunately, until now this remains a huge challenge due to the common opposing trends that exist when promoting improvements in these properties using materials design strategies. Abstract: The extraordinary properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene stimulate the development of advanced composites. Recently, several studies have reported significant synergies in the mechanical, electrical and thermal conductivity properties of polymer nanocomposites by incorporating their nanohybrids. In this work, we created polypropylene nanocomposites with homogeneous dispersion of CNTs and reduced graphene oxides via a facile polymer-latex-coating plus melt-mixing strategy, and investigated their synergistic effects in their viscoelastic, gas barrier, and flammability properties. Interestingly, the results show remarkable synergies, enhancing their melt modulus and viscosity, O2 barrier, and flame retardancy properties and respectively exhibiting a synergy percentage of 15.9%, 45.3%, and 20.3%. As previously reported, we also observed remarkable synergistic effects in their tensile strength (14.3%) and Young's modulus (27.1%), electrical conductivity (32.3%) and thermal conductivity (34.6%). These impressive results clearly point towards a new strategy to create advanced materials by adding binary combinations of different types of nanofillers.

Abstract: Flame-retardant polypropylene (PP) s les were in situ compatibilized with maleic anhydride grafted PP. Compatibilization reaction was verified by an IR spectrum and gel content measurements. Electron microscopy images showed that compatibilization could considerably reduce the size of the flame-retardant domains, control the phase morphology, and improve the interfacial adhesion between PP and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) with different IFR loading levels. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) of flame-retardant PP increased to different extents after compatibilization, indicating an improvement in the flame retardancy. Compatibilization enhanced the thermal stability to some extent and remarkably delayed thermal oxidative degradation of flame-retardant PP. For PP containing 20 wt % flame retardant, the temperature at which the maximum weight loss rate occurred was enhanced by about 99 degrees C after compatibilization. The storage modulus and glass transition temperatures were elevated to different extents. Tensile strengths of s les reduced in the presence of flame retardant alone but in the additional presence of compatibilizer were restored to levels similar to those of pure PP. Elongation-at-break values, however, showed IFR concentration-dependent reductions that were less for compatibilized s les. Furthermore, the complex viscosity of a compatibilized PP melt turned slightly smaller, which is favorable to melt processing.

2D MXenes for Fire Retardancy and Fire‐Warning Applications: Promises and Prospects

Abstract: Frequent fire disasters have caused massive impacts to the environment, human beings, and the economy. MXene has recently been intensively researched as potential flame retardants to provide passive fire protection for other materials via its physical barrier and catalyzing carbonization effects. In parallel, MXene has also demonstrated a great promise for creating early fire warning sensors, which is an emerging field that has the potential to provide active fire response through its thermoelectric effect. This makes it possible to integrate passive fire retardancy and active fire warning into one MXene‐based fire protection system on demand. However, fulfilling these promises needs more research. Herein, an overview of passive flame‐retardant materials and next‐generation smart fire warning materials/sensors based on MXene and its derivatives is provided. This study reviews their conceptual design, characterization, modification principles, performances, applications, and mechanisms. A discussion of the challenges that need to be solved for their future practical applications and opportunities is also presented.

Evaluating the flammability performance of Portland cement-bonded particleboards with different cement-wood ratios using a cone calorimeter

Abstract: Although much efforts have been made to investigate the cement-bonded particleboards, effects of cement–wood ratio on the flammability of the cement-bonded particleboards remain unclear. The cement-bonded particleboards based on recycled Chinese fir particles are fabricated in this work and the flammability properties are evaluated using cone calorimetry tests. Results revealed that the time to ignition of the specimens is remarkably prolonged by more than 21 times (from 26 to 548 s) when the cement–wood ratio increases from 0.5 to 2.0. Additionally, the peak heat release rate, average heat release rate, total heat release, and average mass loss rate of the cement-bonded particleboards are noticeably decreased with increasing cement–wood ratios, and the residual mass of the cement-bonded particleboards is increased by 51 %. However, yields of both CO and CO 2 are slightly improved with increasing cement–wood ratios because of incomplete combustion. This work provides an insight to understanding the flammability of cement-bonded particleboards.

Abstract: Recently, soaring developments in microelectronics raise an urgent demand for thermal management materials to tackle their “overheating” concerns. Polymer nanocomposites are promising candidates but often suffer from their inability of mass production, high‐cost, poor mechanical robustness, and even flammability. Hence, it is desirable to scalably fabricate low‐cost, robust polymeric nanocomposites that are highly thermally conductive and fire‐retardant to ensure safe and efficient thermal management. Herein, the scalable production of nacre‐like anisotropic nanocomposite films using the layer‐by‐layer assembly of phenylphosphonic acid@graphene nanoplatelets (PPA@GNPs)‐poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) layer and GNPs layers, is demonstrated. The PPA serves as interfacial modifiers and fire retardants for flammable PVA (film‐forming agent) and GNPs (inexpensive conductive nanofillers) via hydrogen‐bonding and π–π stacking. The resultant nanocomposite exhibits a high flexibility, high tensile strength of 259 MPa, and an ultrahigh in‐plane thermal conductivity of 82.4 W m ‐1 K ‐1 , making it effectively cool smartphone and high‐power light emitting diode modules, outperforming commercial tinfoil counterparts. Moreover, the as‐designed nanocomposites are intrinsically fire‐retardant and can shield electromagnetic interference. This work offers a general strategy for mass production of thermally conductive nanocomposites holding great promise as thermal management materials in electronic, military, and aerospace fields.

Abstract: Biodegradable polymeric materials with high strength and outstanding toughness are necessary for real‐world applications in the fields of electronics, electrics, and packaging. Unfortunately, such performance portfolios in polymers remain challenging to achieve due to their different governing mechanisms. Inspired by the hydrogen‐bond (H‐bond) cross‐linking structure of spider silk, herein, strong and tough poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites with β‐cyclodextrin as a cross‐linker are developed. Benefiting from the H‐bond cross‐linking effect, the addition of 1.0 wt% of β‐cyclodextrin enables PVA to achieve a high tensile strength of 136.5 MPa, and a high elastic modulus of 3.0 GPa, in combination with a good toughness of 82.1 MJ m −3 . In addition, the presence of β‐cyclodextrin improves the biodegradability of PVA composite by decreasing its crystalline size. Furthermore, PVA/β‐cyclodextrin composite combined with MXene has great potential as a sensor material for humidity and strain detection. This proof‐of‐concept opens numerous opportunities to create strong, tough, and biodegradable polymers for packing and sensing applications.
