Abstract: We report a new generic method of reversibly controlling the photochromism of spiropyrans. It was found that the photochromic effect of spiropyrans can be reversibly switched on and off by addition and removal of carbon dioxide (CO(2)) to spiropyran in alcohol solutions containing an amidine (i.e., DBU) that acts as a CO(2) sensitizer. Spiropyrans are not photochromic in the presence of DBU but photochromic when CO(2) is subsequently added to the solution. The CO(2) is readily removed by inert gas bubbling, thus allowing facile activation and deactivation of the photochromic effect. Carbon dioxide, without the presence of the sensitizing amidine, had no effect on photochromism of the spiropyrans. Other photochromic dyes classes such as spirooxazines and chromenes are not affected by this CO(2)/DBU stimulus. As a result, orthogonal activation of mixtures of spirooxazines and spiropyrans was achieved to provide four color states (clear, yellow, green, and blue) by varying the combinations of the stimuli of UV, visible light, CO(2), and CO(2) depleted. This finding now permits the many applications using spiropyrans to be CO(2) responsive.

Abstract: The ability to present signalling molecules within a low fouling 3D environment that mimics the extracellular matrix is an important goal for a range of biomedical applications, both in vitro and in vivo. Cell responses can be triggered by non-specific protein interactions occurring on the surface of a biomaterial, which is an undesirable process when studying specific receptor-ligand interactions. It is therefore useful to present specific ligands of interest to cell surface receptors in a 3D environment that minimizes non-specific interactions with biomolecules, such as proteins. In this study, surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of poly(ethylene glycol)-based monomers was carried out from the surface of electrospun fibers composed of a styrene/vinylbenzyl chloride copolymer. Surface initiated radical addition-fragmentation chain transfer (SI-RAFT) polymerisation was also carried out to generate bottle brush copolymer coatings consisting of poly(acrylic acid) and poly(acrylamide). These were grown from surface trithiocarbonate groups generated from the chloromethyl styrene moieties existing in the original synthesised polymer. XPS was used to characterise the surface composition of the fibers after grafting and after coupling with fluorine functional XPS labels. Bottle brush type coatings were able to be produced by ATRP which consisted of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate and a terminal alkyne-functionalised monomer. The ATRP coatings showed reduced non-specific protein adsorption, as a result of effective PEG incorporation and pendant alkynes groups existing as part of the brushes allowed for further conjugation of via azide-alkyne Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition. In the case of RAFT, carboxylic acid moieties were effectively coupled to an amine label via amide bond formation. In each case XPS analysis demonstrated that covalent immobilisation had effectively taken place. Overall, the studies presented an effective platform for the preparation of 3D scaffolds which contain effective conjugation sites for attachment of specific bioactive signals of interest, as well as actively reducing non-specific protein interactions.
The generic enhancement of photochromic dye switching speeds in a rigid polymer matrix

Abstract: The switching or isomerization speed of photochromic dyes in a rigid polymeric matrix (such as an ophthalmic lens) is generally significantly slower than that observed in the mobile environment of a solution. Here we describe that the attachment of flexible oligomers having a low glass-transition temperature-such as poly(dimethylsiloxane)-to photochromic dyes greatly increases their switching speeds in a rigid polymer matrix. The greatest impact was observed in the thermal fade parameters T(1/2) and T(3/4)-the times it takes for the optical density to reduce by half and three quarters of the initial optical density of the coloured state-which were reduced by 40-95% and 60-99% respectively for spirooxazines, chromenes and an azo dye in a host polymer with a glass-transition temperature of 120 degrees C. The method does not alter the electronic nature of the dyes but simply protects them from the host matrix and provides greater molecular mobility for the switching process. In addition to ophthalmic lenses, the generic nature of the method may find further utility in data recording or optical switching.

Enhanced Capacitive Humidity Sensing Performance at Room Temperature via Hydrogen Bonding of Cyanopyridone-Based Oligothiophene Donor

Abstract: Cyanopyridone-based oligothiophene donors with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic characters have been evaluated as active layers within simple capacitive devices for humidity sensing at room temperature. Surface studies using atomic force microscopy revealed a self-assembled nanofibrous network with a thin needle-like structure for the terminal hydroxy ex le (CP6), devoid in the methyl ex le (CP1). The sensing performance of each sensor was investigated over a broad range of relative humidity levels as a function of capacitance at room temperature. The sensor CP6 demonstrated favourable features such as high sensitivity (12.2 pF/%RH), quick response/recovery (13 s/20.7 s), wide working range of relative humidity (10%–95% RH), low hysteresis (0.57%), outstanding recyclability, and excellent long-term stability. From the results obtained, hydrophilicity and hydrogen bonding appear to play a vital role in enhancing humidity sensing performance, leading to possible new design directions for simple organic semiconductor-based sensors.
Enhanced photorefractive performance in CdSe quantum-dot-dispersed poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) polymers

Abstract: This paper reports on the enhanced photorefractive behavior of a CdSe quantum-dot-dispersed less expensive polymer of poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile). The capability of CdSe quantum dots used as photosensitizers and the associated photorefractive performance are characterized through a photocurrent experiment and a two-beam coupling experiment, respectively. An enhanced two-beam coupling gain coefficient of 12.2 cm−1 at 46 V/μm was observed owning to the reduced potential barrier. The photorefractive performance per CdSe quantum dot is three orders of magnitude higher than that in the s le sensitized by trinitrofluorenone in poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile), and almost ten times higher than that in the CdSe quantum-dot-sensitized poly(N-vinylcarbazole) polymers.

Abstract: We demonstrate engineering the photocharge generation efficiency of nanoparticles on the nanometer scale by using a type-II band-gap structure. Compared to bare CdSe cores, the dispersion of type-II core/shell nanoparticles in photorefractive polymer led to an average 100% increase in photocurrents. An improvement to the refractive-index construction time, and a near 100% enhancement to the two beam coupling net-gain coefficients and four-wave mixing internal diffraction efficiencies have been achieved at moderate biases.

Surface Click Chemistry on Brominated Plasma Polymer Thin Films

Abstract: A brominated plasma polymer (BrPP) thin film was fabricated on a variety of substrate surfaces (silicon wafers, glass, gold, and polymers) via the radio frequency glow discharge of 1-bromopropane. This BrPP thin film was highly adherent and stable and was found to be a useful platform for secondary reactions, leading to surfaces with specific chemical functionalities. Following nucleophilic exchange, an azide-functionalized PP thin film was prepared that was reactive toward two different alkynes via the copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction, a paradigm of "click" chemistry. "Click" microcontact printing (microCP) of a fluorescent alkyne was also successfully carried out, demonstrating the versatility and functionality of this new class of reactive thin film plasma polymer coatings.

Abstract: The authors demonstrate three-dimensional erasable bit optical data storage in a quantum-dot doped photopolymer under two-photon excitation by a near-infrared femtosecond pulsed laser beam. It is shown that the photorefractive polymer consisting of poly(vinyl carbazole), ethyl carbazole, 4-(diethylaminobenzylidene)-malononitrile, and CdS quantum dots exhibits the changes not only in refractive index but also in fluorescence. Such a photosensitivity provides a multimode readout mechanism. In particular, the use of S rich surface quantum dots not only allows the two-photon-induced bit optical data storage with greater contrast but also expands the margin between permanent and erasable recording thresholds.

Abstract: In this study, we present a method for the fabrication of in situ forming gelatin and poly(ethylene glycol)-based hydrogels utilizing bioorthogonal, strain-promoted alkyne-azide cycloaddition as the cross-linking reaction. By incorporating nitrobenzyl moieties within the network structure, these hydrogels can be designed to be degradable upon irradiation with low intensity UV light, allowing precise photopatterning. Fibroblast cells encapsulated within these hydrogels were viable at 14 days and could be readily harvested using a light trigger. Potential applications of this new class of injectable hydrogel include its use as a 3D culturing platform that allows the capture and release of cells, as well as light-triggered cell delivery in regenerative medicine.

Fatigue of Donor-Acceptor Stenhouse Adducts in Polymer Matrices and Solution

Abstract: The fatigue performance of a range of donor‐acceptor‐Stenhouse‐adducts (DASAs) has been investigated to identify degradation mechanisms. The dyes were found to fatigue with and without exposure to light in both solution and in films. Excluding light below about 430 nm resulted in almost complete thermal recovery after exposure, however, a range of common film additives including hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS) and other additives (especially bases) were shown to react with the DASAs resulting in irreversible fatigue. The rate of fatigue was also found to increase with the relative strength of the donor and acceptor moieties in the molecule.

Abstract: Astrochemistry and astrobiology, the fascinating disciplines that strive to unravel the origin of life, have opened unprecedented and unpredicted vistas into exotic compounds as well as extreme or complex reaction conditions of potential relevance for a broad variety of applications. Representative, and so far little explored sources of inspiration include complex organic systems, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and formamide (HCONH2) oligomers and polymers, like aminomalononitrile (AMN)-derived species and exotic processes, such as solid-state photoreactions on mineral surfaces, phosphorylation by minerals, cold ice irradiation and proton bombardment, and thermal transformations in fumaroles. In addition, meteorites and minerals like forsterite, which dominate dust chemistry in the interstellar medium, may open new avenues for the discovery of innovative catalytic processes and unconventional methodologies. The aim of this review was to offer concise and inspiring, rather than comprehensive, ex les of astrochemistry-related materials and systems that may be of relevance in areas such as surface functionalization, nanostructures, and hybrid material design, and for innovative technological solutions. The potential of computational methods to predict new properties from spectroscopic data and to assess plausible reaction pathways on both kinetic and thermodynamic grounds has also been highlighted.

Photoinitiated Alkyne-Azide Click and Radical Cross-Linking Reactions for the Patterning of PEG Hydrogels

Abstract: The photolithographical patterning of hydrogels based solely on the surface immobilization and cross-linking of alkyne-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-tetraalkyne) is described. Photogenerated radicals as well as UV absorption by a copper chelating ligand result in the photochemical redox reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I). This catalyzes the alkyne-azide click reaction to graft the hydrogels onto an azide-functionalized plasma polymer (N(3)PP) film. The photogenerated radicals were also able to abstract hydrogen atoms from PEG-tetraalkyne to form poly(α-alkoxy) radicals. These radicals can initiate cross-linking by addition to the alkynes and intermolecular recombination to form the PEG hydrogels. Spatially controlling the two photoinitiated reactions by UV exposure through a photomask leads to surface patterned hydrogels, with thicknesses that were tunable from tens to several hundreds of nanometers. The patterned PEG hydrogels (ca. 60 μm wide lines) were capable of resisting the attachment of L929 mouse fibroblast cells, resulting in surfaces with spatially controlled cell attachment. The patterned hydrogel surface also demonstrated spatially resolved chemical functionality, as postsynthetic modification of the hydrogels was successfully carried out with azide-functionalized fluorescent dyes via subsequent alkyne-azide click reactions.

Abstract: Polymers with a single central point of carboxylic acid functionality were prepared by living radical polymerization methods, RAFT and ATRP. A convenient water-based synthesis of a Y-branched ATRP initiator from 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid and 2-bromopropionyl bromide, from which the Y-branched RAFT agent is then subsequently derived, is described. Polymerization occurred uniformly from both of the RAFT groups to give chains of equal length as shown by hydrolysis. ATRP polymerization based on an ester derivative of 3,5-bis(2-bromopropionyloxy)benzoic acid as initiator was well controlled, whereas the free carboxylic acid gave inconsistent performance. The ability to couple functional molecules to the middle of polymers would provide better protection or interaction of the functional molecule with the polymer than conventional end attachment. This would find applications such as in drug delivery where more efficient protection would allow the use of lower molecular weight polymers.

Abstract: In recent years major advances in surface chemistry and surface functionalization have been performed through the development, most often inspired by living organisms, of versatile methodologies. Among those, the contact of substrates with aminomalononitrile (AMN) containing solutions at pH = 8.5 allows a conformal coating to be deposited on the surface of all known classes of material. Since AMN is a molecule probably formed in the early atmosphere of our planet and since HCN-based compounds have been detected on many comets and Titan (Saturn’s largest moon) it is likely that such molecules will open a large avenue in surface functionalization mostly for bio-applications. This mini review describes the state of the art of AMN-based coatings from their deposition kinetics, composition, chemical reactivity, hypothetical structure to their first applications as biomaterials. Finally, the AMN-based versatile coatings are compared to other kinds of versatile coating based on catecholamines and polyphenols.

Abstract: A three-dimensional bit-by-bit optical memory system in quantum-dot and azo-dye doped polymers is demonstrated in this paper. It is shown that two-photon absorption can be used to excite resonance energy transfer from luminescent CdS quantum dots to azo-dye molecules. As a result, the isomerization of azo-dye molecules leads to a pronounced refractive index change. This two-photon-excited energy transfer process in the quantum-dot and azo-dye polymer not only allows for high efficient multilayer information recording into the volume of thick s les but also offers a refractive index window for readout.

Abstract: Targeted delivery of drugs to specific cells allows a high therapeutic dose to be delivered to the target site with minimal harmful side effects. Combining targeting molecules with nanoengineered drug carriers, such as polymer capsules, micelles and polymersomes, has significant potential to improve the therapeutic delivery and index of a range of drugs. We present a general approach for functionalization of low-fouling, nanoengineered polymer capsules with antibodies using click chemistry. We demonstrate that antibody (Ab)-functionalized capsules specifically bind to colorectal cancer cells even when the target cells constitute less than 0.1% of the total cell population. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to create a light responsive nanostructured liquid crystalline matrix using a novel alkylated spiropyran photochromic molecule (spiropyran laurate, SPL) as a light activated drug delivery system. The liquid crystal matrix, prepared from phytantriol, responds reversibly to changes in photoisomerism of SPL on irradiation, switching between the bicontinuous cubic and the reversed hexagonal liquid crystal structures, a change previously shown to dramatically alter drug release rate. In contrast, the non-derivatized spiropyran and spirooxazine photochromic compounds do not sufficiently disrupt the matrix on isomerization to induce the phase change. Thus, novel alkylated spiropyran has the potential to be an effective agent for use in liquid crystalline systems for reversible ‘on-demand’ drug delivery applications.

Abstract: Control over cell-material surface interactions is the key to many new and improved biomedical devices. It can only be achieved if interactions that are mediated by nonspecifically adsorbed serum proteins are minimized and if cells instead respond to specific ligand molecules presented on the surface. Here, we present a simple yet effective surface modification method that allows for the covalent coupling and presentation of specific biological signals on coatings which have significantly reduced nonspecific biointerfacial interactions. To achieve this we synthesized bottle brush type copolymers consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and (meth)acrylates providing activated NHS ester groups as well as different spacer lengths between the NHS groups and the polymer backbone. Copolymers containing different molar ratios of these monomers were grafted to amine functionalized polystyrene cell culture substrates, followed by the covalent immobilization of the cyclic peptides cRGDfK and cRADfK using residual NHS groups. Polymers were characterized by GPC and NMR and surface modification steps were analyzed using XPS. The cellular response was evaluated using HeLa cell attachment experiments. The results showed strong correlations between the effectiveness of the control over biointerfacial interactions and the polymer architecture. They also demonstrate that optimized fully synthetic copolymer coatings, which can be applied to a wide range of substrate materials, provide excellent control over biointerfacial interactions.

Abstract: The abundance and low toxicity of manganese have led us to explore the application of manganese complexes as redox mediators for dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs), a promising solar energy conversion technology which mimics some of the key processes in photosynthesis during its operation. In this paper, we report the development of a DSC electrolyte based on the tris(acetylacetonato)manganese(iii)/(iv), [Mn(acac)3](0/1+), redox couple. PEDOT-coated FTO glass was used as a counter electrode instead of the conventionally used platinum. The influence of a number of device parameters on the DSC performance was studied, including the concentration of the reduced and oxidized mediator species, the concentration of specific additives (4-tert-butylpyridine, lithium tetrafluoroborate, and chenodeoxycholic acid) and the thickness of the TiO2 working electrode. These studies were carried out with a new donor-π-acceptor sensitizer K4. Maximum energy conversion efficiencies of 3.8% at simulated one Sun irradiation (AM 1.5 G 1000 W m(-2)) with an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 765 mV, a short-circuit current (JSC) of 7.8 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor (FF) of 0.72 were obtained. Application of the commercially available MK2 and N719 sensitizers resulted in an energy conversion efficiency of 4.4% with a VOC of 733 mV and a JSC of 8.6 mA cm(-2) for MK2 and a VOC of 771 mV and a JSC of 7.9 mA cm(-2) for N719. Both dyes exhibit higher incident photon to current conversion efficiencies (IPCEs) than K4.
Deposition of Aminomalononitrile-Based Films: Kinetics, Chemistry, and Morphology

Abstract: In the last few years, the development of versatile coating chemistries has become a hot topic in surface science after the discovery that catecholamines can lead to conformal coatings upon oxidation from aqueous solutions. Recently, it was found that aminomalononitrile (AMN), a molecule implicated in the appearance of life on earth, is an excellent prototype of novel material-independent surface functionalizing agents leading to conformal and biocompatible coatings in a simple and direct chemical process from aqueous solutions. So far, very little insight has been gained regarding the mechanisms underlying coating deposition. In this paper, we show that the chemical evolution of AMN film deposition under slightly basic conditions is different in solution and on silica. Thereon, the coating proceeds via a nucleation process followed by further deposition of islands which evolve to produce nitrogen-rich superhydrophilic fibrillar structures. Additionally, we show that AMN-based material can form films at the air-solution interface from unshaken solutions. These results open new vistas into the chemistry of HCN-derived species of potential relevance in materials science.

Abstract: Photochromism is receiving increasing attention because of its current application in high value-added ophthalmic lenses and potential applications in data storage and molecular switching. The performance of photochromic dyes, such as spirooxazines, chromenes, and diarylethenes, in polymers is important because the above applications require the dyes to be in a host polymer. The dyes can be broadly ided into P (photo) and T (thermal) types depending on the availability of a thermal decolouration route. Current research themes for the two types are presented with an emphasis on a new method of manipulating switching speeds in polymer matrices.

Abstract: New methods to synthesize and functionalize polymers are of constant interest to the polymer scientist. The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between an azide and terminal alkyne has received much attention since the reports that copper(i) provides high yields and regioselective synthesis of 1,4-substituted 1,2,3-triazoles. This coupling chemistry has been rapidly adopted by polymer scientists in the synthesis and post-polymerization modification of polymers. This Review will provide the historical context of the recent development of the copper-mediated azide–alkyne cycloaddition and its use in polymer science, particularly in dendrimer synthesis/functionalization, surface immobilization/modification, orthogonally functionalizing polymers, and its integration with ATRP (atom transfer radical polymerization).

Abstract: The current nanofabrication techniques including electron beam lithography provide fabrication resolution in the nanometre range. The major limitation of these techniques is their incapability of arbitrary three-dimensional nanofabrication. This has stimulated the rapid development of far-field three-dimensional optical beam lithography where a laser beam is focused for maskless direct writing. However, the diffraction nature of light is a barrier for achieving nanometre feature and resolution in optical beam lithography. Here we report on three-dimensional optical beam lithography with 9 nm feature size and 52 nm two-line resolution in a newly developed two-photon absorption resin with high mechanical strength. The revealed dependence of the feature size and the two-line resolution confirms that they can reach deep sub-diffraction scale but are limited by the mechanical strength of the new resin. Our result has paved the way towards portable three-dimensional maskless laser direct writing with resolution fully comparable to electron beam lithography.

Abstract: Photochromic spirooxazines functionalized with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) oligomers were monitored using NMR spectroscopy at temperatures between 193 and 233 K before and after in situ exposure to UV irradiation. NOESY and ROESY experiments reveal the TTC (trans-s-trans-cis) isomer to be the dominant merocyanine isomer formed on photolysis, with some CTC (cis-s-trans-cis) isomer also present. Significant ROE cross peaks were observed between the "bulk" of the oligomeric units and protons across the entire photochromic core of the molecule, the intensity of these cross peaks suggesting that the interaction of the oligomer side chain and core of the molecule is significantly enhanced by the permanent attachment, especially with the PDMS side chain. The 2D NMR spectra indicate that there is exchange between the TTC and CTC isomers even at 193 K. This isomerization of the parent spirooxazine compounds, lacking the oligomeric side chains, was found to be acid-catalyzed, and DFT calculations support the strong possibility that it is the protonated merocyanine form that undergoes the facile isomerization process. Interconversion of the different merocyanine isomers is suggested to be fast on the NMR time scale under many experimental conditions, precluding the observation of different isomers using NMR spectroscopy at room temperature.

Photochromic performance of Donor-Acceptor-Stenhouse-Adducts in Polymer Binders and Solution

Abstract: Donor‐acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs) are an exciting new class of negative photochromic compounds, offering high colouration and rapid photo‐switching speeds, however the relationship between binder properties and photo‐switching behaviour of DASAs in films is poorly understood. The determination and analysis of rate constants of seven DASAs in five polymer binders showed a complex relationship between the glass transition temperature ( T g ) of the binder, the solubility parameters of the matrix and the push‐pull nature of the donor and acceptor moieties. The rate constants of photo‐switching steps that require large degrees of molecular motion such as the actinic and thermal carbon‐carbon double bond rotations (k bleach and k −1 ) were found to be highly dependent on the T g of the polymer binder, with higher T g binders restricting these processes, resulting in slower switching rates and impacting changes in colour intensity. Correlation of rate constants with the Hansen solubility parameter for solvents and binders revealed strong relationships between the sum of the polarity and hydrogen bonding parameters (δP+δH) and the actinic and thermal carbon‐carbon double bond rotations (k bleach and k −1 ). This is attributed to changes in the zwitterionic resonance contributions of the triene with increases in these two solubility parameters.
