Abstract: Energy transfer in a series of hetero-dyads of zinc porphyrin and free-base porphyrin connected at the beta position by pi conjugated bridges has been determined. The dyads have been characterized and compared with the homo dyads, excellent models for the donor and the acceptor porphyrins in the electronically conjugated system. The homo dyads provide reliable parameters for the determination of the energy transfer rate calculated according to the Förster theory. This model was inadequate to account for the experimental findings and an electron exchange mechanism was shown to contribute. A favorable coplanar arrangement of the bridge and the tetrapyrroles facilitates the energy transfer process, which displays a very low distance dependence and an efficiency >98%.

Abstract: The critical points of the generalized complementary energy variation principles are clarified. An open problem left by Hellinger and Reissner is solved completely. A pure complementary energy (involving the Kirchhoff type stress only) is constructed, and a complete duality theory in geometric nonlinear system is established. We prove that the well-known generalized Hellenger-Reissner’s energy L(u,s) is a saddle point functional if and only if the Gao-Strang gap function is positive. In this case, the system is stable and the minimum potential energy principle is equivalent to a unique maximum dual variational principle. However, if this gap function is negative, then L(u,s) is a so-called ∂+-critical point functional. In this case, the system has two extremum complementary principles. An interesting trinity theorem for nonconvex variational problem is discovered, which can be used to study nonlinear bifurcation problems, phase transitions, variational inequality, and other things. In order to study the shear effects in frictional post-buckling problems, a new second order 2-D nonlinear beam model is developed. Its total potential is a double-well energy. A stability criterion for post-buckling analysis is proposed, which shows that the minimax complementary principle controls a stable buckling state. The unilaterial buckling state is controled by a minimum complementary principle. However, the maximum complementary principle controls the phase transitions.

Abstract: Previously, web-based tools for cross-sectional antimicrobial point prevalence surveys (PPSs) have been used in adults to develop indicators of quality improvement. We aimed to determine the feasibility of developing similar quality indicators of improved antimicrobial prescribing focusing specifically on hospitalized neonates and children worldwide. A standardized antimicrobial PPS method was employed. Included were all inpatient children and neonates receiving an antimicrobial at 8:00 am on the day of the PPS. Denominators included the total number of inpatients. A web-based application was used for data entry, validation and reporting. We analysed 2012 data from 226 hospitals (H) in 41 countries (C) from Europe (174H 24C), Africa (6H 4C), Asia (25H 8C), Australia (6H), Latin America (11H 3C) and North America (4H). Of 17,693 admissions, 6499 (36.7%) inpatients received at least one antimicrobial, but this varied considerably between wards and regions. Potential indicators included very high broad-spectrum antibiotic prescribing in children of mainly ceftriaxone (ranked first in Eastern Europe, 31.3% Asia, 13.0% Southern Europe, 9.8%), cefepime (ranked third in North America, 7.8%) and meropenem (ranked first in Latin America, 13.1%). The survey identified worryingly high use of critically important antibiotics for hospital-acquired infections in neonates (34.9% range from 14.2% in Africa to 68.0% in Latin America) compared with children (28.3% range from 14.5% in Africa to 48.9% in Latin America). Parenteral administration was very common among children in Asia (88%), Latin America (81%) and Europe (67%). Documentation of the reasons for antibiotic prescribing was lowest in Latin America (52%). Prolonged surgical prophylaxis rates ranged from 78% (Europe) to 84% (Latin America). Simple web-based PPS tools provide a feasible method to identify areas for improvement of antibiotic use, to set benchmarks and to monitor future interventions in hospitalized neonates and children. To our knowledge, this study has derived the first global quality indicators for antibiotic use in hospitalized neonates and children.

Abstract: The complementary variational principles and associated algonrthm are presented in this paper for solving a class of nonconvex mechanics problems governed by the Landau-Ginzburg equation. The method used here is the canonical dual transfonnation developed recently in nonconvex analysis by the author. It is shown that, by this method, certain very difficult nonconvex potential variational problems can be converted into a coupled quadratic mixed variational problem. The extremality conditions of these complementary variational problems are controlled by the triality theory discovered recently. Therefore, a complementary energy principle (i.e. the canonical duality theorem with zero duality gap) is established, which leads to a potentially useful primal-dual algorithm. Applications in finite-dimensional problems are discussed. Results show that the discretized nonconvex potential variational problems in n-dimensional space can be converted into certain simple canonical (either convex or concave) dual problems. Therefore, a complete set of solutions is obtained for the Landau-Ginzburg equation in finite-dimensional space.

Abstract: Many experimental studies have shown that the prion AGAAAAGA palindrome hydrophobic region (113-120) has amyloid fibril forming properties and plays an important role in prion diseases. However, due to the unstable, noncrystalline and insoluble nature of the amyloid fibril, to date structural information on AGAAAAGA region (113-120) has been very limited. This region falls just within the N-terminal unstructured region PrP (1-123) of prion proteins. Traditional X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy experimental methods cannot be used to get its structural information. Under this background, this paper introduces a novel approach of the canonical dual theory to address the 3D atomic-resolution structure of prion AGAAAAGA amyloid fibrils. The novel and powerful canonical dual computational approach introduced in this paper is for the molecular modeling of prion AGAAAAGA amyloid fibrils, and that the optimal atomic-resolution structures of prion AGAAAAGA amyloid fibils presented in this paper are useful for the drive to find treatments for prion diseases in the field of medicinal chemistry. Overall, this paper presents an important method and provides useful information for treatments of prion diseases.

Abstract: The post-buckling problem of a large deformed beam is analyzed using the canonical dual finite element method (CD-FEM). The feature of this method is to choose correctly the canonical dual stress so that the original non-convex potential energy functional is reformulated in a mixed complementary energy form with both displacement and stress fields, and a pure complementary energy is explicitly formulated in finite dimensional space. Based on the canonical duality theory and the associated triality theorem, a primal–dual algorithm is proposed, which can be used to find all possible solutions of this non-convex post-buckling problem. Numerical results show that the global maximum of the pure-complementary energy leads to a stable buckled configuration of the beam, while the local extrema of the pure-complementary energy present unstable deformation states. We discovered that the unstable buckled state is very sensitive to the number of total elements and the external loads. Theoretical results are verified through numerical ex les and some interesting phenomena in post-bifurcation of this large deformed beam are observed.

Abstract: The max-plus algebra is well known and has useful applications in the investigation of discrete event systems and affine equations. Structural matrix rings have been considered by many authors too. This article introduces more general structural matrix semirings, which include all matrix semirings over the max-plus algebra. We investigate properties of ideals in this construction motivated by applications to the design of centroid-based classification systems, or classifiers, as well as multiple classifiers combining several initial classifiers. The first main theorem of this paper shows that structural matrix semirings possess convenient visible generating sets for ideals. Our second main theorem uses two special sets to determine the weights of all ideals and describe all matrix ideals with the largest possible weight, which are optimal for the design of classification systems.

Abstract: This paper presents an unconventional theory and method for solving general nonlinear dynamical systems. Instead of the direct iterative methods, the discretized nonlinear system is first formulated as a global optimization problem via the least squares method. A newly developed canonical duality theory shows that this nonconvex minimization problem can be solved deterministically in polynomial time if a global optimality condition is satisfied. The so-called pseudo-chaos produced by linear iterative methods are mainly due to the intrinsic numerical error accumulations. Otherwise, the global optimization problem could be NP-hard and the nonlinear system can be really chaotic. A conjecture is proposed, which reveals the connection between chaos in nonlinear dynamics and NP-hardness in computer science. The methodology and the conjecture are verified by applications to the well-known logistic equation, a forced memristive circuit and the Lorenz system. Computational results show that the canonical duality theory can be used to identify chaotic systems and to obtain realistic global optimal solutions in nonlinear dynamical systems. The method and results presented in this paper should bring some new insights into nonlinear dynamical systems and NP-hardness in computational complexity theory.
