Abstract: Learning from nature, one of the most prominent goals of photocatalysis is to assemble multifunctional photocatalytic units in an integrated, high performance device that is capable of using solar energy to produce “solar hydrogen” from aqueous media. By analogy with natural systems it is clear that scaffolds with multi-scale structural architectures are necessary. In this perspective, recent progress related to the use of hollow micro/nanomaterials as nanoreactors for photocatalysis is discussed. Organised, multi-scale assemblies of photocatalytic units on hollow scaffolds is an emerging area that shows much promise for the synthesis of high performance photocatalysts. Not only do improved transport and diffusion characteristics play an import role, but increased electron/hole separation lifetimes as well as improved light harvesting characteristics by the hollow structures also do so and are touched upon in this short perspective.

Abstract: There is an increasing focus on the hydrometallurgical processing of nickel-rich laterite ore due to declining global reserves of nickel sulphides. The development of new technology called hybrid nickel leaching circuit that encompasses pressure acid leaching (PAL) and atmospheric leaching (AL) processes has made processing of low-grade ores (with nickel content as low as 0.5%) a possibility. However, significant challenges exist in lowering the operating costs for this new process including the reduction of sulphuric acid and the energy required to heat the pulp to the desired temperature (250oC). To address above challenges, a detailed understanding of the process chemistry together with interactions between unit operations feeding into and out of the system is required. To accomplish this, a software package with powerful convergence algorithms, control loops, background chemical equilibrium, aqueous thermodynamics and extensive databases containing information on the physical properties of desired components is needed. Using such a process simulator, it is possible to produce numerically rigorous mass/energy balances for as many variations of the model as desired. This allows enhanced analysis of the flowsheet, better process design, and ultimately, better business decisions. Although there have been several studies on hybrid circuit, most of these studies have only dealt with the effects of process variable such as temperature, acidity, pulp density. Thus far, no complete study has been published on the modelling of different proposed scenarios. The present work constitutes an effort towards bridging this gap. A number of possible flowsheeting combinations were simulated using a commercial software packages SysCAD, and some optimal configurations were identified.

Abstract: Hydrodynamics study of a continuous bubble chain rising through liquid column has been performed for laboratory scale bubble column using the volume-of-fluid (VOF) approach. The effect of operating and design parameters on the bubble size distribution and rise trajectory has been investigated for air-water system. For the same distributor, simulation results have indicated the formation of small bubbles at low superficial gas velocity and relatively large bubbles at higher velocities. The increase in the hole-size of distributor has shown similar behaviour. Analysis of bubble trajectories for different superficial gas velocities and distributors has demonstrated an oscillatory behaviour exhibited by small bubbles formed at low superficial gas velocity. A reasonable agreement between the predicted values of gas hold-up with the experimental work has validated the present model.

Abstract: A simple, selective and accurate reverse phase HPLC method was developed for detection and quantitation of γ-conglutin from lupin seed extract. A linear gradient of water and acetonitrile containing trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) on a reverse phase column (Agilent Zorbax 300SB C-18), with a flow rate of 0.8ml/min was able to produce a sharp and symmetric peak of γ-conglutin with a retention time at 29.16min. The identity of γ-conglutin in the peak was confirmed by mass spectrometry (MS/MS identification) and sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) analysis. The data obtained from MS/MS analysis was matched against the specified database to obtain the exact match for the protein of interest. The proposed method was validated in terms of specificity, linearity, sensitivity, precision, recovery and accuracy. The analytical parameters revealed that the validated method was capable of selectively performing a good chromatographic separation of γ-conglutin from the lupin seed extract with no interference of the matrix. The detection and quantitation limit of γ-conglutin were found to be 2.68μg/ml and 8.12μg/ml respectively. The accuracy (precision and recovery) analysis of the method was conducted under repeatable conditions on different days. Intra-day and inter-day precision values less than 0.5% and recovery greater than 97% indicated high precision and accuracy of the method for analysis of γ-conglutin. The method validation findings were reproducible and can be successfully applied for routine analysis of γ-conglutin from lupin seed extract.

Abstract: A numerical study on the settling behaviour of particles in shear‑thinning thixotropic fluids has been conducted. The numerical scheme was based on the volume of fluid model, with the solid particle being likened to a fluid with very high viscosity. The validity of this model was confirmed through comparisons of the flow field surrounding a sphere settling in a Newtonian fluid with the analytical results of Stokes. The rheology model for the fluid was time‑dependent, utilising a scalar parameter that represents the integrity of a “structural network,” which determines its shear thinning and thixotropic characteristics. The results of this study show that the flow field surrounding the settling sphere is highly localised, with distinct regions of disturbed/undisturbed fluids. The extension of these regions depends on the relaxation time of the fluid, as well as its shear thinning characteristics, and reflects the drag force experienced by the sphere. As the sphere settles, a region of sheared fluid that has significantly lower values of viscosity is formed above the sphere. This region slowly recovers in structure in time. As a result, a sphere that falls in a partially recovered domain (e.g., due to the shearing motion of an earlier sphere) tends to attain a greater velocity than the terminal velocity value. This was found to be true even in cases where the “resting time” of the fluid was nearly twice the relaxation time of the fluid. The results of this study could provide a framework for future analysis on the time‑dependent settling behaviour of particles in thixotropic shear‑thinning fluids.

Abstract: Kafirin is a natural, hydrophobic and celiac safe prolamin protein obtained from sorghum seeds. Today kafirin is found to be useful in designing delayed delivery systems and coatings of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals where its purity is important and this can be obtained by adsorptive chromatography. This study is the first scientific insight into the isotherm and kinetic studies of kafirin adsorption on anion- and cation-exchange resins for practical applications in preparative scale chromatography. Adsorption isotherms of kafirin were determined for five anion- and two cation-exchange resins in batch systems. Isotherm parameters such as maximum binding capacity and dissociation constant were determined from Langmuir isotherm, and adsorptive capacity and affinity constant from Freundlich isotherm. Langmuir isotherm was found to fit the adsorption equilibrium data well. Batch uptake kinetics for kafirin adsorption on these resins was also carried out and critical parameters including the diffusion coefficient, film mass transfer coefficient, and Biot number for film-pore diffusion model were calculated. Both the isotherm and the kinetic parameters were considered for selection of appropriate resin for kafirin purification. UNOsphere Q (78.26 mg/ml) and Toyopearl SP-650M (57.4 mg/ml) were found to offer better kafirin binding capacities and interaction strength with excellent uptake kinetics under moderate operating conditions. With these adsorbents, film diffusion resistance was found to be major governing factor for adsorption (Bi<10 and δ<1). Based on designer objective function, UNOsphere Q was found be best adsorbent for binding of kafirin. The data presented is valuable for designing large scale preparative adsorptive chromatographic kafirin purification systems.

Influence of Microwaves on the Water Surface Tension

Abstract: In this study, microwave irradiation was applied to hanging droplets of both water and ethylene glycol. Once the irradiation had ceased and the droplet was allowed to return to its original temperature, it was found that the surface tension of ethylene glycol returned to its original value. In contrast, the water surface tension remained well below its original value for an extended period of time. Similar observations have been reported for magnetically treated water, but this is the first time that such a lasting effect has been reported for microwave irradiation. The effect can be attributed to the unique hydrogen bonds of interfacial water molecules. While the irradiation intensities used in this study are well above those in household devices, there is certainly the potential to apply the methodology to industrial applications where the manipulation of surface tension is required without the use of chemical addition.

Dynamic Simulation on Deflagration of LNG Spill

Abstract: The deflagration characteristics of premixed LNG vapour-air mixtures with different mixing ratios were quantitatively and qualitatively investigated by using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) method. The CFD model was initially established based on theoretical analysis and then validated by a lab-scale deflagration experiment. The flame propagation behaviour, pressure-time history, and flame speed were compared with the experimental data, upon which a good agreement was achieved. A large-scale deflagration fire during LNG bunkering process was conducted using the model to investigate the flame development and overpressure effects. Mesh independence and time scale were tested in order to obtain the suitable grid resolution and time step. Deflagration cases with two different LNG vapour volume fractions, i.e., 10.4% and 15.0%, were simulated and compared. The one with a volume fraction of 10.4% which was around stoichiometric mixing ratio had the highest flame propagating speed. High flame velocity observed in the simulation was coupled with the thin flame front where overpressure occurred. The CFD model could capture the main features of deflagration combustion and account for LNG fire hazard which could provide an in-depth insight when dealing with complicated cases.

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive literature review of different characteristics of greywater (GW) and current treatment methods. GW is domestic wastewater excluding toilet waste and can be classified as either low-load GW (excluding kitchen and laundry GW) or high-load GW (including kitchen and/or laundry). This review provides information on the quantity of GW produced, its constituents (macro and micro), existing guidelines for wastewater reuse, current treatment methods (from storage to disinfection) as well as related costs and environmental impacts. Moreover some successful ex les from various countries around the world are examined. The current preferred treatments for GW use physical and biological/natural systems. Recently, chemical systems like coagulation, adsorption and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been considered and have been successful for low to moderate strength GW. The presence of xenobiotic organic compounds (XOC), which are hazardous micropollutants in GW, is emphasised. Since conventional treatments are not efficient at removing XOC, it is recommended that future studies look at chemical treatment, especially AOPs that have been found to be successful at mineralising recalcitrant organic compounds in wastewater.

Abstract: Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) is the refinery process for the conversion of high molecular-weight hydrocarbons to produce higher valuable products such as gasoline. The optimization of FCC process is challenging due to the complex interactions between a large number of dependent and independent parameters. One of the most uncertain aspects of a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit is the description of fluid-solid mixing at the riser entrance. Most of the existing models assume an instant mixing of solids and gaseous reactants. However, a finite mixing length at the bottom of the riser may have a pronounced effect on the FCC operation, particularly, when very short residence times are allowed in the current commercial FCC risers. A good solid-fluid mixing is essential to ensure a complete feed vaporization which is important for several reasons including assuring a thorough catalyst to oil contact and minimizing coke deposition. In this study, the Eulerian-Eulerian multiphase flow and the 3-lump kinetic models were used to simulate the hydrodynamics and cracking reactions occurring in the FCC riser reactors. The model demonstrated the capability of commercial CFD code FLUENT 6.2 to describe the flow field in the riser reactor. The model also takes into account the temperature, the heat of reactions and gasoline distribution along the riser height.

Dynamic Simulation of Reactive Batch Distillation Column for Ethyl Acetate Synthesis

Abstract: A detailed mathematical dynamic model of reactive batch distillation column is formulated for ethyl acetate synthesis and presented in terms of differential and algebraic equations (DAEs). These DAEs are solved using fourth order Runge-Kutta method in MATLAB® to obtain the detailed column dynamics. The simulation results provide the dynamics of reboiler and distillate compositions, reboiler temperature, ethyl acetate purity in the accumulated distillate and conversion of the reactants. These results are analyzed to derive the optimum operating policy, i.e., reflux ratio and batch time.

Organic-inorganic hybrid hierarchical aluminum phenylphosphonate microspheres

Abstract: Organic-inorganic hybrid phenylphosphonates with hierarchical morphologies have attracted much attention due to their structural versatility for various applications including catalysis, adsorption, and biomedicals, however, so far there have been no reports of the synthesis and application of aluminum phenylphosphonate microspheres. Here, we report a hydrothermal method for the synthesis of the flower-like porous aluminum phenylphosphonate microspheres by using phenylphosphinic acid and aluminum nitrate as the precursors. The nano-flakes formed in the initial growing stage are believed to play a key role in the formation of aluminum phenylphosphonate micro-flowers. The self-assembly of the flower-like microspheres has been identified to involve a two-stage growth process: a synergistic Ostwald ripening and oriented nanosheets attachment. The resultant aluminum phenylphosphonate micro-flowers can be easily converted to mesoporous amorphous aluminum phosphates by high temperature treatment without causing any morphology deterioration. The hierarchical aluminum phenylphosphonate microspheres have been applied to enrich peptide. This versatile synthesis method would enable to synthesize other metal phosphonates hosphates spheres with interesting architecture for the potential application in catalysis, energy storage and nanomedicine.

Abstract: Multiphase flow processes are frequently observed in several important reactor technologies. These technologies are found in erse applications such as in manufacture of petroleum-based fuels and products, conversion of synthesis gas into liquid hydrocarbons (Gas-to-liquid technology), production of commodity chemicals, pharmaceuticals, herbicides, pesticides, polymers etc. Due to the inherent complexity of these processes, the knowledge of fluid dynamic and transport parameters is necessary for development of appropriate reactor models and scale-up rules. It is, therefore, of paramount importance to develop understanding and predictive tools to simulate multiphase flow processes for better and economically viable reactor technologies. In the past, knowledge of hydrodynamics and transport characteristics of multiphase reactors has been interpreted in the form of empirical correlations, which have numerous restrictions in terms of their validity for different operating conditions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, on the other hand, deals with the solution of fluid dynamic equations on digital computers, requiring relatively few restrictive assumptions and thus giving a complete description of the hydrodynamics of these reactors. This detailed predicted flow field gives an accurate insight to the fluid behaviour and can sometimes give information, which cannot be obtained from experiments. These days, due to cheaper computational resources, CFD simulations are becoming economically reliable for modeling of multiphase processes including GTL (Gas-to-liquid) processes. In this paper, a comprehensive review of different multiphase flow simulation approaches has been presented. The recent progress made in hydrodynamic modeling of multiphase reactors, their capabilities and limitations (with special focus on GTL processes) are discussed in detail. Finally, case studies with different simulation approaches (Eulerian-Eulerian and VOF (Volume of fluid) simulations of bubble column reactors operating in different flow regimes) are discussed to demonstrate the power of this emerging research tool.
