Abstract: IEC 61850 is one of the most prominent communication standards adopted by the smart grid community due to its high scalability, multi-vendor interoperability, and support for several input/output devices. Generic Object-Oriented Substation Events (GOOSE), which is a widely used communication protocol defined in IEC 61850, provides reliable and fast transmission of events for the electrical substation system. This paper investigates the security vulnerabilities of this protocol and analyzes the potential impact on the smart grid by rigorously analyzing the security of the GOOSE protocol using an automated process and identifying vulnerabilities in the context of smart grid communication. The vulnerabilities are tested using a real-time simulation and industry standard hardware-in-the-loop emulation. An in-depth experimental analysis is performed to demonstrate and verify the security weakness of the GOOSE publish-subscribe protocol towards the substation protection within the smart grid setup. It is observed that an adversary who might have familiarity with the substation network architecture can create falsified attack scenarios that can affect the physical operation of the power system. Extensive experiments using the real-time testbed validate the theoretical analysis, and the obtained experimental results prove that the GOOSE-based IEC 61850 compliant substation system is vulnerable to attacks from malicious intruders.

Abstract: Protein corona composition and precise physiological understanding of differentially expressed proteins are key for identifying disease biomarkers. In this report, we presented a distinctive quantitative proteomics table of molecular cell signaling differentially expressed proteins of corona that formed on iron carbide nanoparticles (NPs). High-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization coupled with ion trap mass analyzer (HPLC/ESI-Orbitrap) and MASCOT helped quantify 142 differentially expressed proteins. Among these proteins, 104 proteins showed upregulated behavior and 38 proteins were downregulated with respect to the control, whereas 48, 32 and 24 proteins were upregulated and 8, 9 and 21 were downregulated CW (control with unmodified NPs), CY (control with modified NPs) and WY (modified and unmodified NPs), respectively. These proteins were further categorized on behalf of their regularity, locality, molecular functionality and molecular masses using gene ontology (GO). A STRING analysis was used to target the specific range of proteins involved in metabolic pathways and molecular processing in different kinds of binding functionalities, such as RNA, DNA, ATP, ADP, GTP, GDP and calcium ion bindings. Thus, this study will help develop efficient protocols for the identification of latent biomarkers in early disease detection using protein fingerprints.

Abstract: The increasing metal release into the environment warrants investigating their impact on plants, which are cornerstones of ecosystems. Here, Lactuca sativa L. (lettuce) seedlings were exposed hydroponically to different concentrations of silver ions and nanoparticles (Ag NPs) for 25 days to evaluate their impact on plant growth. Seedlings taking Ag+ ions showed an increment of 18% in total phenolic content and 12% in total flavonoid content, whereas under Ag NPs, 7% free radical scavenging activity, 12% total phenolic contents (TPC), and 10% total reducing power are increased. An increase in 31% shoot length, 25% chlorophyll, 11% carbohydrate, and 16% protein content of the lettuce plant is observed in response to Ag NPs, while silver nitrate (AgNO3) has a reduced 40% growth. The lettuce plant was most susceptible to toxic effects of Ag+ ions at a lower concentration, i.e., 0.01 mg/L, while Ag NPs showed less toxicity, only when higher concentrations mg/L were applied. Further, biomolecules other than antioxidant enzymes showed higher phytotoxicity for Ag+ ions, followed by Ag NPs with the concentration of 25, 50, and 100 mg/L compared to the control. Thus, moderate concentrations of Ag NPs have a stimulatory effect on seedling growth, while higher concentrations induced inhibitory effects due to the release of Ag+ ions. These results suggest that optimum metallic contents are desirable for the healthier growth of plants in a controlled way.

Abstract: Hydrogen is emerging as an alternative clean fuel however, its dependency on freshwater will be a threat to a sustainable environment. Seawater, an unlimited source, can be an alternative, but its salt‐rich nature causes corrosion and introduces several competing reactions, hindering its use. To overcome these, a unique catalyst composed of porous sheets of nitrogen‐doped NiMo 3 P (N‐NiMo 3 P) having a sheet size of several microns is designed. The presence of large homogenous pores in the basal plane of these sheets makes them catalytically more active and ensures faster mass transfer. The introduction of N and Ni into MoP significantly tunes the electronic density of Mo, surface chemistry, and metal‐non‐metal bond lengths, optimizing surface energies, creating new active sites, and increasing electrical conductivity. The presence of metal‐nitrogen bonds and surface polyanions increases the stability and improves anti‐corrosive properties against chlorine chemistry. Ultimately, the N‐NiMo 3 P sheets show remarkable performance as it only requires overpotentials of 23 and 35 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction, and it catalyzes full water splitting at 1.52 and 1.55 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 in 1 m KOH and seawater, respectively. Hence, structural and compositional control can make catalysts effective in realizing low‐cost hydrogen directly from seawater.

Abstract: Coking wastewater contains not only high-strength nitrogen but also toxic biorefractory organics. This study presents simultaneous removal of high-strength quinoline, carbon, and ammonium in coking wastewater by immobilized bacterial communities composed of a heterotrophic strain Pseudomonas sp. QG6 (hereafter referred as QG6), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), and anaerobic ammonium oxidation bacteria (anammox). The bacterial immobilization was implemented with the help of a self-designed porous cubic carrier that created structured microenvironments including an inner layer adapted for anaerobic bacteria, a middle layer suitable for coaggregation of certain aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and an outer layer for heterotrophic bacteria. By coating functional polyurethane foam (FPUF) with iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs), the biocarrier (IONPs-FPUF) could provide a good outer-layer barrier for absorption and selective treatment of aromatic compounds by QG6, offer a conducive environment for anammox in the inner layer, and provide a mutualistic environment for AOB in the middle layer. Consequently, simultaneous nitrification and denitrification were reached with the significant removal of up to 322 mg L

Abstract: The family of crystals constituting covalently bound strings, held together by van der Waals forces, can be exfoliated into smaller entities, similar to crystals made of van der Waals sheets. Depending on the anisotropy of such crystals, as well as the spacing between their strings in each direction, van der Waals sheets or ribbons can be obtained after the exfoliation process. In this work, we demonstrate that ultrathin nanoribbons of bismuth sulfide (Bi

Abstract: The predicted strong piezoelectricity for monolayers of group IV monochalcogenides, together with their inherent flexibility, makes them likely candidates for developing flexible nanogenerators. Within this group, SnS is a potential choice for such nanogenerators due to its favourable semiconducting properties. To date, access to large-area and highly crystalline monolayer SnS has been challenging due to the presence of strong inter-layer interactions by the lone-pair electrons of S. Here we report single crystal across-the-plane and large-area monolayer SnS synthesis using a liquid metal-based technique. The characterisations confirm the formation of atomically thin SnS with a remarkable carrier mobility of ~35 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and piezoelectric coefficient of ~26 pm V −1 . Piezoelectric nanogenerators fabricated using the SnS monolayers demonstrate a peak output voltage of ~150 mV at 0.7% strain. The stable and flexible monolayer SnS can be implemented into a variety of systems for efficient energy harvesting.

Abstract: TiO 2 nanofibers, with mean diameter ~200 nm, were fabricated by electrospinning and successfully photosensitized with low bandgap Ag 2 S nanoparticles of 11, 17, 23 and 40 nm mean sizes, with corresponding loading of 4, 10, 18 and 29 wt.% Ag 2 S, respectively. 17 nm Ag 2 S@TiO 2 nanofibers exhibited optimal activity in the photodegradation of methylene blue under simulated sunlight with pseudo-first order rate constant of 0.019 min −1 compared to 0.009 min −1 for pure TiO 2 nanofibers. In spite of greater visible-light absorption and reduced bandgap, larger than 17 nm Ag 2 S nanoparticles exhibited sluggish photodegradation kinetics probably due to less photo-induced carriers generation in TiO 2 and reduced electron injection rates from the larger sized Ag 2 S into TiO 2 . Furthermore, a UV-O 3 surface treatment induced excess Ti 3+ surface states and oxygen vacancies which synergistically enhanced the photodegradation rate constant to 0.030 min −1 for 17 nm Ag 2 S@TiO 2 s le which is ~70% better than the previously reported for Ag 2 S/TiO 2 hierarchical spheres. This was attributed to the efficient charge separation and transfer driven by increased visible-light absorption, bandgap narrowing and reduced electron-hole recombination rates. The present study demonstrate the potential utilization of Ag 2 S@TiO 2 nanofibers in filtration membranes for removal of organic pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract: Designing sensing materials with novel morphologies and compositions is eminently challenging to achieve high-performance gas sensor devices. Herein, an in situ oxidative polymerization approach is developed to construct three-dimensional (3D) hollow quasi-graphite capsules olyaniline (GCs/PANI) hierarchical hybrids by decorating protonated PANI on the surface of GCs as a result, an immensely active and sensitive material was developed for sensing ammonia gas at room temperature. Moreover, the GCs possessed a capsule-like hollow/open structure with partially graphitized walls, and PANI nanospheres were uniformly decorated on the GC surfaces. Furthermore, the inflexible and rigid 3D ordered chemistry of these materials provides the resulting hybrids with a large interfacial surface area, which not only allows for rapid adsorption and charge transfer but also provides the necessary structural stability. The 3D hollow GCs/PANI hybrids exhibit excellent performance the GCs/PANI-3 hybrid is highly sensitive (with a response value of 1.30) toward 10 ppm NH
