Abstract: dentifying the root causes of construction accidents has indicated that not only contractors but designers and architectures are capable of influencing construction workers safety. The aim of this study is to investigate and prioritize factors affecting construction hazards in the design phase. To achieve the aim of this study, a questionnaire survey was distributed among respondents randomly selected from construction sites within Malaysia. Relative Importance Index method was used to prioritize factors in order of level of effect on construction hazards. The results indicated that Lack of designers safety knowledge, Lack of designers knowledge about construction processes and Late involvement of constructors in the design process have the highest level of effect while Lack of safety organizations which evaluates the safety level of design and Few application of components' prefabrication have the lowest level of effect on hazards in the design phase of construction projects.

Abstract: Construction hazard identification is one of the fundamental steps in construction safety management therefore identifying hazards and determining their severities of consequences are extremely important. The aim of this study is to investigate and rank the construction hazards in order of the severity of consequences. The data for this study were collected using a questionnaire survey, distributed among respondents randomly selected from construction sites within Malaysia. The results of this study indicated that the most critical construction hazards are Awkward postures, Forceful exertions and Physical injury hazards which originate from process of work and manual handling of operations and equipments. On the contrary Blue green algae and Fungi are the least critical construction hazards which are not critical threats to the safety and health of construction workers. In addition to training and educational purposes, the results of this study can be used in preparing appropriate construction safety and health plans.

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel method to address reliability and technical problems of microgrids (MGs) based on designing a number of self-adequate autonomous sub-MGs via adopting MGs clustering thinking. In doing so, a multi-objective optimization problem is developed where power losses reduction, voltage profile improvement and reliability enhancement are considered as the objective functions. To solve the optimization problem a hybrid algorithm, named HS-GA, is provided, based on genetic and harmony search algorithms, and a load flow method is given to model different types of DGs as droop controller. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in two case studies. The results provide support for the performance of the proposed method.

Abstract: Recycling of waste materials plays a significant role in waste management strategies, but the interactive properties of recycled aggregates in concrete have been considered by only a few researchers. The experimental study reported in this paper focused on the effects of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and waste glass (WG) on the properties of concrete. The response surface methodology was used to optimise and model the results of tests for compressive strength, tensile strength, slump, water absorption, electrical resistivity and hardened unit weight. The effective variables of the experiment were RCA (0–65%) as coarse aggregate replacement and WG (0–40%) as fine aggregate replacement. The results obtained indicate that high volumes of waste materials could be used in concrete without a significant reduction in the mechanical and durability (namely water absorption and electrical resistivity) properties of the concrete. Moreover, when WG was substituted in the mixture, the water absorption, electrical resistivity and workability of the concrete improved and the use of RCA had a significant influence on the mechanical properties of the concrete. Based on statistical analysis, all the proposed models were adequate, with coefficients of determination above 0·95. The optimum condition in which all response targets performed properly was found to be 17% of RCA and 35% of WG.

Abstract: Where a consortium of contractors is involved, there exist no guidelines in the literature on what the outcome sharing arrangement should be. The paper addresses this shortfall. It derives the optimal outcome sharing arrangement for risk-neutral and risk-averse contractors within the consortium, and between the consortium and a risk-neutral owner. Practitioners were engaged in a designed exercise in order to validate the paper’s propositions. The paper demonstrates that, at the optimum: the proportion of outcome sharing among contractors with the same risk-attitude should reflect the levels of their contributions the proportion of outcome sharing among contractors with the same level of contribution should be lower for contractors with higher levels of risk aversion a consortium of risk-neutral contractors should receive or bear any favourable or adverse project outcome respectively and the proportion of outcome sharing to a consortium of risk-averse contractors should reduce, and the fixed component of the consortium fee should increase, when the contractors become more risk-averse or the level of the project outcome uncertainty increases. The paper proposes an original solution to the optimal sharing problem in contracts with a consortium of contractors, thereby contributing to current practices in contracts management.

Abstract: To meet the target completion time of a construction project is one of the most important performance indicators of project management. This paper proposes a fast and accurate method for evaluating the reliability of project completion time in large construction projects, using reliability theory. The proposed method is developed to overcome the limitations of existing methods, including the inaccuracy of the program evaluation and review technique and the long computational time of the narrow reliability bounds method. The proposed method is established in three main parts: (i) calculating the statistics of paths duration in the network (ii) truncating insignificant paths of the network and (iii) proposing an innovative solution to accurate estimate for reliability of project completion time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated using an ex le project. It is found that the results of the proposed method on the reliability of completion time are accurate. It is also found that the proposed method significantly reduces the number of analysed network paths and the computational effort. The method proposed here can serve as a fast and accurate tool for project managers and project planners in project planning, re-planning, and project control phases.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to propose an optimum form of incentive contracts with multiple outcomes and multiple agents. Utility theory and principal-agent theory provide the underlying basis for this paper. A s le of 60 practitioners from public organizations and private companies participated in an exercise to validate the proposed model. The paper shows that, in outcome sharing contracts, the contributions of agents toward outcomes are positively related, while agent effort costs, outcome uncertainty, outcome correlation and agent level of risk aversion are negatively related. The paper further demonstrates that outcome sharing is positively associated with the level of effort selected by the agents. Outcome sharing models might be used in construction contracts to encourage the agent to act in the interests of the principal. However, few studies have looked at contracts with multiple outcomes and multiple agents. This paper contributes to the current practice of contract management through simplifying the complex nature of multiple incentive contracts and providing theoretical guidance for multi arrangements.

Abstract: This paper aims to provide a novel framework for optimal congestion management via encouraging a collaboration between the independent system operator (ISO) and Retail electricity companies (Recos) in implementing demand response (DR) programs based on the market mechanism. The merit of this paper is to increase the market efficiency. Three economic signals, namely, demand reduction, congestion elasticity, and electricity spot price values, specified by the ISO, are used for assisting Recos in evaluating any benefits from implementing DR in various network buses. A Stackelberg game is adopted for designing a DR trade between Recos and demand response aggregators to help Recos identifying their optimal demands in the market, which are then used by the ISO to analyze grid congestion and consequently to re-specify the new economic signals. The game is repeated until the Nash equilibrium point, the optimal congestion reduction, and the optimal Recos' demands are obtained. The performance of the proposed framework is assessed using a test power system, and the results are compared with the current practices in the Australian electricity market. This paper demonstrates an effective performance of the proposed framework.

Abstract: This paper establishes an optimal time incentive/disincentive-based compensation in a contract between a principal and a team of agents. The establishment is based on solving an optimization problem. In order to validate the paper's theoretical development practitioners were engaged in a designed exercise. The paper demonstrates that, at the optimum: the proportion of time incentive/disincentive compensation among agents with the same risk-attitude should reflect the levels of their contributions the proportion of time incentive/disincentive among agents with the same level of contribution should be lowered for agents with higher levels of risk aversion and the proportion of time incentive/disincentive to a team of risk averse agents should reduce, and the fixed component of the team fee should increase, when the agents in the team become more risk-averse or the level of the uncertainty in project completion time increases. The paper’s outcome provides guidance to those involved in contracts design for choosing the best way to reward (penalise) multiple agents, form a team, and allow for any time saving (overrun) through the terms of a contract.

Abstract: – The purpose of this paper is to address a shortfall in the literature dealing with optimal sharing arrangements. In construction projects, where the owner is concerned about multiple project outcomes (cost, time, quality, […]), there exist no guidelines in the literature on what a sharing arrangement should be between the owner and the contractor. This paper gives that arrangement, under defined risk assumptions on the contractor (risk averse ranging to risk neutral) and the owner (risk neutral). The sharing aligns the contractor's interests with those of the owner. – The results are based on solving a constrained maximisation problem involving the expected utilities of both the owner and contractor. Construction practitioners were interviewed in a designed experiment to validate the results. – It is demonstrated that, at the optimum, the proportions of outcomes sharing to the contractor should be higher for outcomes with lower effort cost and a lower level of uncertainty, and by increasing the correlation between outcomes, the fixed component of the contractor’s fee should increase and the proportions to the contractor should decrease. – The theoretical results assume that the contractor is risk-averse ranging to risk-neutral, and that the owner is risk-neutral. The theory is supported through conducting an empirical study based on interviewing a s le of practitioners working for medium-sized contractors, and hence the support is limited to similar situations, until further data are assembled. – By providing a broader understanding of sharing arrangements within contracts, a contribution is made to the current practice of contracts management. The results may be used in the design of contracts, or as benchmarks, by which contracts designed differently, may be compared. – The results address a shortfall in the literature and are an original solution to establishing an optimal multiple-outcome sharing arrangement.

Abstract: Construction as a complex industry challenges the protection of safety and health of workers who are exposed to many risk factors in construction sites. Exposure to these risk factors may develop Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). The study is aimed at prioritizing Ergonomic Risk Factors (ERFs) in order of risk. To achieve the aim of this study, a questionnaire survey was distributed among respondents randomly selected from construction sites in Malaysia. The results of this study indicated that the most critical ERFs are Extreme hot temperature, Leaning forward/side, twisting the back and Organizational factors, while the least critical ERFs are Kneeling positions on hard surfaces, Holding tools with longitudinal ridges on handles tightly and Using hands or knees as a hammer. Identification of ERFs and their risk levels are the results of this study. Successful safety performance and management necessitate the investigation of ERFs and hazards regarding risk levels.

Abstract: The water footprint concept has been widely applied to the agriculture sector however, little attention has been given to industrial products. In this paper, the concept of water footprint is applied to a large steel plant located in a semi-arid basin in the central part of Iran. The limitations of existing research, including the lack of any advanced approach for assessing the virtual water of personnel's food, working in the plant, and the lack of providing independent data sources, are addressed. An improved water footprint model of steel production is proposed based on the water footprint network methodology and the life cycle assessment framework. Ideas from food ecological footprint are applied to measure the water footprint of personnel's foods. The case of Iran demonstrates that the water footprint of steel production is considerably large compared with other industrial products. The results highlight the relevance of production line technology, energy efficiency measures, and human management on reducing the water footprint of steel products. The paper adds to a growing body of literature on environmentally friendly steel production.

Abstract: – Target cost contracts are commonly used to share the monetary outcome of work or a project. However, discussion is ongoing, as to what constitutes optimal sharing. The purpose of this paper is to examine optimal sharing and derives a result for defined risk assumptions on the owner (risk neutral) and contractor (risk-averse ranging to risk neutral). – The derivation is based on solving a constrained maximization problem using ideas from principal-agent theory. Practitioners were engaged in a designed exercise in order to validate the approach and propositions. The influence of the contractor's level of risk aversion, the cost uncertainty and the contractor's effort effectiveness are examined. – The paper shows that, at the optimum, the sharing ratio between contractor and owner needs to reduce and the fixed fee needs to increase when the contractor becomes more risk-averse, the level of the cost uncertainty increases, or the effectiveness of the contractor effort decreases. – The paper's findings provide practitioners with a useful benchmark for outcome sharing in target contracts. – Existing work on outcome sharing in target contracts is limited to being qualitative and anecdotal in nature. This paper extends existing knowledge by providing a quantitative treatment of optimal sharing.
