Abstract: Due to conversion equilibrium between solvent and H- and O-containing adsorbates, the true surface state of a catalyst under a particular electrochemical condition is often overlooked in electrocatalysis research. Herein, by using surface Pourbaix analysis, we show that many electrocatalytically active transition metal X-ides (e.g., oxides, nitrides, carbides, and hydroxides) tend to possess the surface states different from their pristine stoichiometric forms under the pH and potential of interest due to water dissociation or generation. Summarizing the density functional theory calculated surface Pourbaix diagrams of 14 conditionally stable transition metal X-ide materials, we found that some of these surfaces tend to be covered by O-containing adsorbates at a moderate or high potential, while vacancies or H-covered surfaces may form at a low potential. These results suggest the possibility of poisoning or creation of surface sites beyond the pristine surface, implying that the surface state under reaction conditions (pH and potentials) needs to be considered before the identification and analysis of active sites of a transition metal X-ide catalyst. In addition, we provide an explanation of the observed theory and experiment discrepancy that some transition metal X-ides are “more stable in experiment than in theory.” Based on our findings, we conclude that analyzing the surface state of transition metal X-ide electrocatalysts by theoretical calculations (e.g., surface Pourbaix diagram analysis), in situ/operando and post-reaction experiments are indispensable to accurately understand the underlying catalytic mechanisms.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to examine how money laundering occurs through electronic gaming devices, the regulatory requirements for operators of electronic gaming machines, the issues of on-line versus land-based gambling and a discussion about ethics and social responsibility. This is primarily a conceptual paper which includes an identification of several theories relevant to money laundering. Primary data were obtained from one respondent through a face-to-face meeting and another through a telephone conversation. A strong, globally co-ordinated effort is required to fight against the increasingly “dark side” of money laundering. The tenets of corporate social responsibility (CSR), including a strong focus on ethics, is vitally important in the gambling industry in helping to wipe out money laundering, which is used to make “dirty” money “clean” and in some instances, used to fund terrorism. Further studies could be conducted incorporating a s le of primary data within, and between, jurisdictions. Further work is recommended for developing a form of global collective targeted practical deterrents, supported by technology including artificial intelligence as identified to some degree in this paper. Whilst this paper has included a discussion on CSR, moral management and ethics as a means of arbitrating money laundering, future research could put this idea to the test. Efforts (including technological) to combat money laundering at the venue level continue to be developed. Further, regulations could include mandatory training in CSR and ethics for all employees in organisations identified by regulators as being particularly susceptible to money laundering. Terrorist actions have gained increasing attention as various countries have had to endure seemingly escalating atrocities in their jurisdictions. Government has an important role to take the necessary steps to strike out terrorism to protect its citizens. No peer-reviewed academic articles could be identified using a Google Scholar search on money laundering and/or marketing and or CSR. A limited number of articles were identified using the search terms “money laundering and gambling”.

Abstract: This paper empirically examines the impact of corporate money laundering/gambling activities on firms’ financial performance. We specifically address whether Australian firms associated with money laundering suffer any short‐ or long‐term financial performance effects following the public announcement of money laundering activities. Our findings suggest that Australian firms that engage in money laundering/gambling activities perform significantly better than firms in other countries after such announcements.

Abstract: Gambling has traditionally been a part of the national psyche in Australia. In more recent times, however, attitudes in much of the community are changing, with the result that governments are widely expected to develop increasingly restrictive public policies related to electronic gaming machines (EGMs). The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between government, business, and the broader community in the context of the gambling industry in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, and to explore the political and social policy implications of reconciling these competing stakeholder interests. The research draws on the results of 38 face-to-face interviews with key stakeholders in Nevada and NSW conducted during 2005 and 2006, with an additional two interviews in 2013 in NSW. Furthermore, 47 newspaper articles were analyzed to further identify key issues. Against a background of widespread community skepticism, we argue that governments have an important role in setting public policies and striking the appropriate balance between protecting those who have, or are susceptible to, gambling problems and the majority of people who play EGMs without any ensuing problems. However, businesses also have an important contribution to make by being proactively socially responsible, thereby increasing their legitimacy and negating the need for further government interventions.

Abstract: This paper presents a systematic literature review using HistCite TM in the context of gambling. After several iterations of data cleaning, the final dataset comprised 265 articles. Four key themes are identified: profiling gamblers gambling markets gambling motivation and fallacies and societal effects. Further, this study identifies four key emerging research themes and associated directions for future research: adolescent gambling, health conditions and problem gambling, dark nudging. Gambling is economically and socially significant, both in Australia and globally. Whilst gambling taxes are utilised by governments for the social good, the academic literature largely focuses on the issue of problem gambling.

Abstract: Marketers of legal but potentially harmful products face a number of challenges. This paper examines the influence of media on the legitimacy of the electronic gaming machine (EGM) industry, and focuses on the largely negative portrayal of EGMs in Australia. Academic literature on gambling focuses overwhelmingly on problem gambling. EGMs have been accused as being the most addictive type of gambling. However, statistical evidence suggests that most persons who play EGMs do not in fact become addicted to them. The media are generally expected to present both sides of an issue. In reality, however, competing ideologies influence the stance various newspapers take. An initial content analysis of 343 newspaper articles from three major Australian newspapers was undertaken. Further analysis of a “representative slice” of a media article using discourse analysis adds weight to the negative portrayal towards EGMs by the media using “framing.” This lack of balance in the Australian media is at odds with the historical social acceptance of gambling, thereby creating bias and causing somewhat of a conundrum for marketing managers in this industry. Furthermore, all external advertising of EGMs is now banned in Australia, making it extremely difficult for marketing managers to develop effective promotional messages to counter negative media coverage. We recommend that government take a leading role for open and transparent dialogue to make its democratic voice heard. We also argue it could be done through research, independent panels and other suitable means.

Abstract: The increase in intangible asset ownership and the importance of capabilities as “assets” has brought a new perspective to the conventional balance sheet and to the valuation of the assets, the business and shareholder value. The rise and demise of the “dot.coms” emphasise the need to reconsider the approach to corporate and shareholder valuation models. It is suggested that the virtual organisation offers the flexibility that organisation design will require if full advantage is to be taken of the emerging opportunities. However, successful virtual organisations require some planning and dedicated management if the success is to be sustained.
