Abstract: Objective: The study's aim was to review instruments suitable for assessing Australian Indigenous clients’ treatment needs, and changes in wellbeing while receiving treatment for substance misuse at a culturally competent residential setting in north Queensland, Australia. Method: Searches of electronic databases, previously published reviews and websites was conducted. Instruments were selected according to their use in alcohol and drug treatment, developed for and/or validated with Australian Indigenous populations and applicability to measuring wellbeing. Findings: Forty instruments were identified and their characteristics summarised according to five descriptive categories: (1) evidence of psychometric utility and previous use in alcohol and drug treatment settings, (2) developed for, used with, and/or validated specifically for Australian Indigenous populations, (3) a flexible administrative method of self-report and/or interview, (4) an administration time of less than 20 minutes and (5) freely accessible in the public domain. Conclusions: Few instruments were found to have been validated specifically for use with Australian Indigenous people for use in drug and alcohol treatment. In order to measure wellbeing change and effective treatment, it may be possible to appropriately modify mainstream instruments, however, validation and sensitivity assessment of instruments for use with Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, is urgently required.

Abstract: This case study of an adult and community education provider based in far north Queensland describes its capacity to balance various iterations of public policy against its vision for the future of Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islanders. Community-controlled organisations wanting to contribute to economic and social development in regional/remote Australia through the use of formally recognised vocational education and training have adjusted to at least three major sociopolitical changes at the national policy level since the early 1990s. These include redefining equity, marketising the delivery of public services and increased centralisation. The contemporary orientation of vocational education and training as part of the Indigenous Advancement Strategy has become a highly prescriptive and heavily centralised mechanism for the establishment of employment outcomes. This has been framed as an obligation and right of Australian citizenship as opposed to the other wellbeing and personal development benefits of education. This registered training organisation has navigated four burdensome (re)definitions of equity that have made planning and delivery of true lifelong training objectives difficult. The provider has embraced the marketisation of the sector and navigated other policy changes in order to provide the services and knowledge set out in the college mission statement.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to report on the product of a ten year study, the PhD thesis, “Feminist Systems Thinking: Principles and Practice”, conferred in April, 2012 by the University of Queensland, which contains a set of five practical principles, to assist in policy directions for enhanced community development and project management. This research adapted Constructivist Grounded Theory to complete Part A, a theoretical imbrication of Cultural Ecofeminism and Critical Systems Thinking. Part B of the thesis is a set of four applied case studies utilising participatory action research. The findings of Part A of this work established a meta‐theoretical framework in the form of five practical principles to guide project managers at various stages and scales of their work. Part B's evaluation of these principles found that the principles can make practitioners' work clearer, identify gaps to address the multiplicity of often overlapping social concerns, and flag implications for future research and practice. Embedding the principles in practice can help managers plan, guide and evaluate community development interventions. Further research to establish the principles in a wider number of settings would be advantageous. Embedding the principles draws in the voices of those on the margins of any project, helping to avoid superficial consultations and oversight of all (human and non‐human inhabitants) affected. This work is entirely original. There is no known imbrication of the epistemologies selected for this study. In the recent examination of the thesis, the work was commended for its innovative methodological approach and original contribution to knowledge.

Abstract: The authors present experimental results showing the effect of an applied bias voltage on backscattered ion spectra acquired from thin films of ruthenium and hafnia in the helium ion microscope. A characteristic peak associated with the presence of a thin layer of material is observed to shift as a function of s le bias voltage. The magnitude of this shift is measured, and the authors qualitatively estimate the composition of their s les as well as investigate the neutralization of ions by the s le in the helium ion micoscope (HeIM). They discuss the phenomenona in terms of thin films of ruthenium and hafnia and show the implications of these results on HeIM spectroscopy.
