Abstract: One of the important parts of a research article is an introduction. As the initial part of an article, it should provide all the ideas confirming that the study needs to be conducted. Therefore, the ideas presented should be well organized. One of the ways to confirm a good organization of ideas in the introduction is by paying attention to the theme structure used to build the clauses. This study analyzed the theme types and structure used in the introduction section of articles published in Indonesian national journals. This study was conducted using qualitative content analysis. Using a documentation technique, the data were collected from 15 research articles published in the latest volumes (2020-2021) of four Indonesian national journals. The data were analyzed using a content analysis method, following the established procedure of the clause theme analysis. The results of the study found the dominant use of simple themes in the introduction section of the research articles, indicating a lack of ideas organization. Besides, it was also found that the theme structure of the clauses was realized in nine theme patterns. These patterns are used in presenting different contents of an introduction. It is concluded that theme types and patterns contribute to producing a good quality introduction section of a research article.

Abstract: The paper presents evidence for an effect-for-cause inferencing process underlying the general style of using loud speech voice among Toba Batak speakers (Indonesia). A subjective reaction test was conducted to find out their perception towards the use of loud voice in three relational settings having different combinations of bipolarity: 1) vertical social distance and horizontal social distance 2) vertical social distance only and 3) horizontal social distance only. The results showed that in contexts where horizontal social distance remains, the absence of vertical distance significantly weakens the perception of impoliteness and unacceptability towards the use of loud voice. This indicates that Toba Bataks assume a pseudo social proximity when they are speaking to people with whom they have no horizontal social closeness. This method of inferencing is consistent with an effect-for-cause relational structure, being metonymic in nature.

Abstract: Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) concerns three metafunction meanings: clause as message, clause as exchange, and clause as representation. This article tries to analyze anding-andingen, one of oral tradition in Karo culture. The points of this paper are only two kinds of metafunctions could be applied to anding-andingen: clause as message and clause as representation. The clause of exchange could not be applied to anding-andingen since anding-andingen is an Adjunct form so it does not have the potential to be Subject Therefore, it cannot be upgraded to an interpersonal status of capital responsibility. Anding-andingen form cannot be categorized as a clause because at the semantic level, although its form resembles a clause, but is used to describe a person's nature or condition. In using anding-andingen, if the clause is preceded by a nominal group of Subject and followed by anding-andingen as a prepositional phrase or adverbial group, the textual function will be Rheme, but if the clause begins with anding-andingen, it will be Marked Theme.

Abstract: This study attempts to investigate the incomplete linguistic features and schematic structure in university students’ narrative text. Qualitative content analysis method was utilized as the research design. The instrument of the research is the writing sheet. The data were taken from a narrative text written by 34 university students of second-year English education study program under the theme of folktales from North Sumatera. The data were analyzed by using the transitivity system to identify linguistic features in narrative text. The findings present that there are 4 different titles of folktales found in the data. From the data, it was commonly found that there is an incomplete part of the schematic structure of narrative text written by students namely complication, evaluation, resolution, and coda. In terms of linguistic features, it is discovered that most of the students have difficulties in differing the tense used covering the use of regular and irregular verbs, and the absence of dialogue. Then, the conclusion can be drawn that the incomplete schematic structure and linguistic features exist in university students’ narrative text. It is also suggested that students keep practicing to write and lecturers should devote higher attention in teaching this genre so that it is able to be comprehended and properly produced by students.

Abstract: This paper deals with the interaction pattern between teacher and students in the real classroom lessons. This study was primarily conducted to determine the patterns of classroom interaction produced by the teachers and learners during the class sessions in the bilingual middle-school classrooms in Medan City, Indonesia. The data were spoken texts of teachers from five video-recorded classes (Mathematics, Physics, Biology, English and IT/TIK) during the period of even semester, and were then analyzed by applying the Flanders Interaction Analysis Categories System (FIACS) ‘Interaction Model’ following the frame works proposed by Flanders (1970). From the data analysis, it was found that the talk was dominated by teachers, particularly on the categories of no 4, 5, and 6, while students practiced no 8 mostly, and it also indicated that instructor expressions were very overwhelming in each ex le of assignments amid the class sessions, while understudies reactions or different properties were moderately low in rates in an educator centered classroom aside from in the scene no. 5 (IT Lesson) where understudies took the greater part of the cooperation among peers. The examination likewise demonstrates that elicitation, reaction, and input were deliberately utilized by instructor, and understudies were a piece of the structure of classroom talk exercises. The ex le, notwithstanding, could be changed relying upon the educator expectation or the times of lesson that understudies learn.

Abstract: This study anchored in the field of Interlanguage Pragmatic (ILP). The approach taken is speech act based. The investigation focuses on realization of polite requests produced by Indonesian learners of Français langue étrangère (FLE) (henceforth abbreviated as ILF) and native speakers of French (henceforth abbreviated as NSF). The model used for the investigation is the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP) model formulated by Blum-Kulka et al. (1989), modified by Warga (2005) and Bae (2012). The model applied to the analysis of the data is based on three politeness systems of social relationship between speaker and addressee proposed by Scollon and Scollon (2001). Data was be collected by using Written Discourse Completion Test (WDCT). Six out of twelve request situations formulated by Reiter (2000) categorized into each politeness system were selected to be analyzed. The WDCT were tested to 20 ILF 1 learner of Universitas Negeri Medan and 19 learners of Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The 20 participants are those who are certified of Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF) of B2 level (advanced level). As the baseline data of the study, the e-mailed data of 20 NSF were also collected. The study found that there is a preference of Indonesian learners of FLE and native speaker of French to use Conventional Indirect strategy in their requests. This strategy, even realized in slightly different number of use, was highly used and considered to be the most polite request by the two groups.

This research data is in the form of the 1945 Constitution text which has not been amended because it is fundamental and first. The theory used in this study is the Functional Systemic Linguistics (LSF) theory pioneered by Halliday. Furthermore, to analyze the data used the analysis technique of the model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. Based on the results of the study found, namely (1) there are six processes in the text of the 1945 Constitution which are dominated by material processes (2) there are three types of participant, namely participants based on the process, participants based on their numbers, and participants based on their form (3) there are The ten types of circumstant are dominated by circumumstan manner and there is no circumstant extent. It is intended that the text of the 1945 Constitution is generally constructed by a material verb along with a circumstance manner and cirscumstant angle, the participants of which are human beings. The Constitution text after the amendment is very important to be analyzed with linguistic approaches to describe the text of the Constitution more clearly and more specifically.

Abstract: The study of the disappearance of local languages throughout the world continues to spark the interest of linguists. Even though this fear has been raised in several Indonesian government initiatives, academics have completed a comparatively limited study on local language vocabulary in Indonesia, particularly The Panai Malay Language (PML), which continues to decrease in its usage by its speakers. The objectives of this study are to describe the features of archaic vocabularies of the Panai Malay language and to investigate the pattern of Panai Malay language revitalization. The research was conducted using a qualitative research method with the ethnography research design by using 591 vocabularies as research data sources. The results of this study reveal that PML archaic vocabularies are found in 10 domains, namely the realm of family, agriculture, housing, food-beverage, customs, health, marine, human body, clothing, and human nature. The archaic domains of PML vocabularies are more dominantly found in the domains of human nature, namely 30 vocabularies or 8.15% for teenage respondents, while according to adult respondents 13 vocabulary (9.70%), and older people by 12 words (13.48%). The revitalization of archaic vocabularies of PML should be implemented through formal efforts by integrating the language material in the formal learning process through the Local Content Curriculum as well as by writing the PML Dictionary which should be shared through social media such as Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Revitalization through non-formal channels should be carried out through communication training, publishing folklore by incorporating PML archaic vocabularies, and reactivating PML cultural activities.

Abstract: This paper entitled “Lexical Density and Grammatical Intricacy in Debaters’ speeches (Case Study of National University Debating Ch ionship 2018)” discusses the lexical density and grammatical intricacy to identify the level of lexical density and grammatical intricacy in debaters’ speeches conducted by means of descriptive qualitative method. The theories supporting this thesis are the ones proposed by Ure, Halliday, and Simon Quinn. The data source in this thesis were debate speech from Main Grand Final round of NUDC 2018 which are Opening Government team (Prime Minfister and Deputy Prime Minister) and Opening Opposition team (Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition) taken from youtube video of NUDC 2018, Malang. The data in this study were lexical items for lexical density and clauses for grammatical intricacy. The step passed in this analysis are collecting the data by transcribing the debate speech into text, identifying the lexical items and clauses, and concluding the analysis. The result of this thesis shows that lexical density and grammatical intricacy of Prime Minister = 40.95 % and 3.43, Deputy Prime Minister = 42.44% and 2.72, Leader of the Opposition = 46.14% and 2.91, and Deputy Leader of the Opposition = 47.90% and 3. Thus, both the level of lexical density and grammatical intricacy in debaters’ speeches account for higher density and intricacy, so debaters’ speeches represent much information due to many lexical items as the proportion of running words and indicate that clause complex is more dominant than simple sentence.

Abstract: Children in pre-school are in the golden age who need to practice their language to each participant in this area. Usually, the language used both by the children even the teachers is unformal. It is because the children are in the stage of learning how to interact with others, therefore, the language sometimes is used ungrammatically. Then the data is compiled from the field observation in pre-school at Kota Langsa to find out the linguistic phenomenon in the kinds of school. By using the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) analysis by Halliday, it is found that there is some minor clause used in the conversation among the children and the students. The minor clause in the theory is called “vocative” which is usually known as “calls”. There are twenty-eight (28) “calls” used in the instructional process at the pre-school. Some “calls” is form as a word but the other is form as a kind of vocalizations. The “calls”, however, have a different usage depending on the speakers and the addressee. It is different when the calls are used as the students talk to their friends when the calls are used by the teachers to the students, and vice versa. This kind of minor clause is interesting to be explored since there are only limited researches observed about this issue. Though, it can enrich the study of language especially for the function of a call (vocative).

Abstract: This paper aims to introduce the modesty model of the qurani language as an alternative foundation of the politeness theories of language that have been taught so far. This model is important to be applied in the life of industrial revolution society 4.0. Fundamentally the industrial revolution 4.0 has caused changes in the way humans live, think, and interact in establishing relationships with one another. In turn this era has disrupted various human activities. These include language activities which are a form of social interaction. The phenomenon of impoliteness, harassment (bullying), and verbal violence is increasingly massive in the real world. Even the industrial revolution 4.0 which provides easy internet access and advances in information technology has also led to an increase in the phenomenon of hate speech, the dissemination of hoaxes and cyber bullying that can threaten social harmony and the unity of the multicultural Indonesian nation. Therefore it is necessary to develop a polite language education model based on religious teachings.

Abstract: Speaking is the basic as well as the most important skill that needs to be acquired by English language learners. It is advisable that learning speaking English should begin as early as possible however, to teach speaking skill to young learners is not an easy task since their age is the age of playing. Teaching speaking to young learners requires a teacher to find the technique best work with children, one of which is through games. One of the games that is corresponding to the age of young learners is a snake and ladder game. This paper aims at describing how a snake and ladder game is used in teaching speaking to young learners. Based on the discussion on applying a snake and ladder game, it is concluded that this game is the right game to apply in teaching speaking to young learners. People during early ages like playing and dislikes studying, especially in a formal education. By using this game, the children (learners) do not realize that they learn to speak English because they enjoy playing the game. In addition, this game supports the issue of student-centered learning because the students are the ones who actively practice speaking, while the teacher acts as the learning facilitator who provides assistance if needed.
