Abstract: We present work on the creation of a ceramic materials database which contains data gleaned from literature data sets as well as new data obtained from combinatorial experiments on the London University Search Instrument. At the time of this writing, the database contains data related to two main groups of materials, mainly in the perovskite family. Permittivity measurements of electroceramic materials are the first area of interest, while ion diffusion measurements of oxygen ion conductors are the second. The nature of the database design does not restrict the type of measurements which can be stored as the available data increase, the database may become a generic, publicly available ceramic materials resource.

Abstract: Polymer–ceramic composites have been prepared by dispersing Ca4La6(SiO4)4(PO4)2O2 (CLSP) ceramic filler in high density polyethylene (HDPE) matrix through melt mixing. Scanning electron micrographs reveal the extent of filler dispersion. The dielectric properties at 1 MHz and 5 GHz have been investigated as a function of filler content. The relative permittivity increases with filler loading, maintaining a low dielectric loss. The composite with highest filler loading of 0.4 volume fraction shows a relative permittivity of 5.1 and dielectric loss of 2.3 × 10−3 at 5 GHz. Experimentally observed values of relative permittivity at 5 GHz have been compared with the values calculated using various theoretical models. Both the coefficient of linear thermal expansion and tensile strength have been observed to decrease with filler loading, reaching a minimum value of 117 ppm/ °C and 20.7 MPa, respectively, at 0.4 volume fraction of filler. The composite with maximum filler loading of 0.4 volume fraction shows the highest thermal conductivity (TC) and is 1.2 W m−1 K−1.

Abstract: Ba(Zn 1/3 Ta 2/3 )O 3 (BZT) has been prepared with various amounts of different dopants such as oxides of alent, trivalent, tetravalent, pentavalent and hexavalent elements. Effect of these dopants on microwave dielectric properties of BZT is investigated. Some of the dopants are found to increase quality factor ( Q ). Most of the dopants increase the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τ f ). Annealing undoped BZT increased the order parameter and quality factor. Small amounts of dopants such as that of oxides of Zr, Ga, Cr, Ce, Sn, In, Mn and Sb increased the quality factor. The doped ions substitute for the ordered B ions decreasing the order parameter. Annealing Ga and In doped BZT decreased the Q factor where as it increased for Zr, Cr, Ce, Sn, Mn, Sb doped s les. Doping BZT with Zr, Ga, Cr, Ce, Sn, In, Mn, Sb decreased the order parameter but at the same time increased the quality factor indicating that order parameter alone is a poor indicator of quality factor. The quality factor is found to depend on the dopant ionic radii and dopant concentration. The quality factor increased when the ionic radius of the dopant is close to the ionic radius of the B site ions Zn or Ta.

Abstract: Hybrid silica spheres (HS) of size 270-350 nm with vinyl and aminopropyl surface groups were incorporated in polystyrene (PS), and its effect on dielectric properties, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and strength of PS-HS composite was studied. Incorporation of HS in PS followed a decrease in the dielectric constant from 3.2 for PS to 2.6 for composite with 7.5 vol % HS. The decrease in the dielectric constant was attributed to (i) increased interfacial porosity, (ii) formation of anhydrous HS having low dielectric constant, during hot processing of the composites, and (iii) dispersion and preservation of the anhydrous HS in the hydrophobic matrix. The dielectric constant of the composites with HS content up to 7.5 vol % does not vary much with temperature in the range from -20 to 65 °C. These composites also exhibited reduced CTE and improved flexural strength/stiffness due to good interfacial bonding through HS vinyl groups and dispersion of the filler in the matrix. The dielectric loss increased with HS content, and the loss measured for 7.5 vol % PS-HS composite was 6 × 10(-3), as compared to 10(-4) for PS. At HS loading above 7.5 vol %, the tendency of HS to agglomerate and form percolated structure lead to an increase in the dielectric constant and decrease in the mechanical properties of the composites.

Abstract: Complex ceramics Ca5−xBaxNb2TiO12 and Ca5−xBaxTa2TiO12 were prepared by conventional solid-state ceramic route. The crystalline structures were determined by x-ray diffraction, which showed that solid solutions were formed for x=4 (CaBa4Nb2TiO12 and CaBa4Ta2TiO12) and crystalline multiphases appeared for 1⩽x⩽3. The dielectric properties of the sintered ceramics were measured in the microwave frequency range. The dielectric constant and temperature variation of resonant frequency increased and the quality factor decreased with increasing x value. Raman analyses showed different spectra depending upon the composition, with variations in both intensity and frequency, as well as in the number of bands strictly related to the phases present. For both Nb- and Ta-based systems, the results indicated an increase in the short-range ordering with barium substitution, which explained the reduction in the unloaded quality factor (Qu). The results of far-infrared spectroscopy agree well with the Raman data, with few variations when Nb replaces Ta, and an increase in the complexity of the vibrational modes for Ca∕Ba mixed ceramics.

Abstract: In this work, we performed infrared reflectivity measurements of RETiTaO 6 dielectric ceramics for rare-earth (RE) = Y, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Yb. The infrared spectra were analyzed through the four-parameter semi-quantum model based on two orthorhombic (aeschynite and euxenite) structures presented by the ceramics. We discerned the strongest phonon modes that contribute to the intrinsic dielectric behavior of the two families. Then the unloaded quality factors and the dielectric permittivities were estimated at the microwave region. The variations of the intrinsic dielectric response of both systems with RE ion substitution are discussed in terms of changes in their dielectric polarizabilities. It is proposed that the covalency of the RE–O bonds play an important role in the evolution of dielectric permittivity as well as in the sign of the temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency.

Abstract: Complex perovskite-type Ca5−xSrxA2TiO12[A=Nb,Ta] (0⩽x⩽5) ceramics were prepared by conventional solid-state ceramic route. The crystal structure, microwave dielectric properties, and vibrational spectroscopic characteristics of these materials are reported. The structure and microstructure were investigated by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The microwave dielectric properties were measured in the 3–5-GHz frequency range by the resonance method. Structural evolutions from orthorhombic to an averaged pseudocubic phase, with associated changes in dielectric properties, were observed as a function of composition. The structure-property relationships in these ceramics were established using Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic techniques. Raman analysis showed characteristic bands of ordered perovskite materials, with variation in both intensity and frequency as a function of composition.

Abstract: The effect of dopants with different valencies and ionic radii on the densification, structural ordering, and microwave dielectric properties of Ba(Mg1∕3Ta2∕3)O3 (BMT) is investigated. It is found that dopants such as Sb2O5, MnO, ZrO2, WO3, and ZnO improve the microwave dielectric properties of BMT. Addition of trivalent dopants is detrimental to the cation ordering and dielectric properties of BMT. A correlation between the microwave dielectric properties of BMT and ionic radii of the dopant has been established. The variation of the dielectric properties of pure and doped BMT at cryogenic temperatures is also discussed.

Abstract: Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-silver composites were prepared and the influence of conductivity, particle size, and interfacial area of Ag particle on the percolative behavior were investigated. Silver particles of two different grain sizes (3.5 and 5 μm) were in idually mixed with PTFE and the corresponding variations in the dielectric properties were studied. The composite containing Ag particles of size 3.5 μm showed the percolation at 7 vol %, while for Ag particles of size 5 μm, the percolation is at 10 vol %. In both cases near the percolation, the interparticle distances were in the range of ∼3.3–3.8 μm.

Abstract: MgTe 2 O 5 ceramics were prepared by solid-state route. These materials were sintered in the temperature range of 640–720 °C. The structure and microstructure of the compound was investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The dielectric properties of the ceramics were studied in the frequency range 4–6 GHz. The MgTe 2 O 5 ceramics have a dielectric constant (ϵ r ) of 10.5, quality factors ( Q u × f ) of 61000 at 5.3 GHz, and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τ f ) of −45 ppm/°C at the optimized sintering temperature of 700 °C. The microwave dielectric properties of these materials at cryogenic temperatures were also investigated.

Abstract: La 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 1−x Ni x O 3−δ (0⩽ x ⩽0.6) ceramics were prepared using a conventional solid-state ceramic route. The thermal properties—thermal conductivity and heat capacity—of these ceramics were measured by the photopyroelectric technique. The thermal conductivity was found to increase with increasing Ni content. These materials were also found to exhibit a metallic-type variation of thermal conductivity with temperature, and no metal-insulator (M-I) transition was found to occur in any of the s les prepared by this route. However, a M-I transition was found to occur in La0.5Sr0.5CoO3−δ s les prepared by hot pressing. The difference is attributed to variations in oxygen content in the s les.

Abstract: The present communication investigates the dielectric response of the Sr9Ce2Ti12O36 ceramics loaded high density polyethylene and epoxy resin. Sr9Ce2Ti12O36 ceramic filled polyethylene and epoxy composites were prepared using hot blending and mechanical mixing, respectively. 40 vol % ceramic loaded polyethylene has relative permittivity of 12.1 and loss tangent of 0.004 at 8 GHz, whereas the corresponding composite using epoxy as matrix has permittivity and loss tangent of 14.1 and 0.022, respectively. The effective medium theory fits relatively well for the observed permittivity of these composites.

Abstract: Temperature-stable, low-loss Ca5−xAxB2TiO12 (A=Mg, Zn, Ni, and Co B=Nb and Ta) dielectrics suitable for microwave telecommunication applications were prepared by the conventional solid-state ceramic route. Investigations were made on the structure and microstructure of the ceramics employing x-ray and scanning electron microscopic techniques. The dielectric properties were measured in the 3.5–7GHz frequency range. The time domain simulation of electromagnetic wave interaction with dielectric materials, using three-dimensional transmission line matrix modeling methods, is presented. Excellent agreement between experimental and simulated values of microwave dielectric properties was observed. The materials are potential candidates for applications in filters, oscillators and high efficiency low-loss dielectric antennas working especially at millimeter wave region.

Abstract: Ca 5 A 2 Ti 1− x Zr x O 12 (A = Nb, Ta) ceramics were prepared through conventional solid-state ceramic route for 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 1. The crystal structures of the ceramics were studied by x-ray diffraction techniques, and dielectric properties were measured at microwave frequencies. In the Ca 5 Nb 2 Ti 1− x Zr x O 12 system as x increases from 0 to 1, ϵ r decreases from 48 to 25, Q u × f from 26,000 to 19,000 GHz, and τ f from +40 to −21 ppm/°C. In Ca 5 Ta 2 Ti 1− x Zr x O 12 ceramics, ϵ r varies from 38 to 22, Q u xf from 33,000 to 24,000 GHz, and τ f from +10 to −26 ppm/°C as x is changed from 0 to 1. The variation of microwave dielectric properties with bond valence and electronegativity in the two systems were also investigated. Ca 5 Nb 2 Ti 0.2 Zr 0.8 O 12 and Ca 5 Ta 2 Ti 0.7 Zr 0.3 O 12 dielectric ceramics were found to have stable resonant frequency with temperature and are potential candidates for applications in personal and satellite communication systems in the S and C band (2–8 GHz).

Abstract: A temperature stable low loss substrate based on 0.83ZnAl2O4–0.17TiO2 (ZAT) was developed as a substitute to Al2O3 for possible applications in microelectronic industry as substrates and packaging materials. The thermal conductivity of ZAT is 59Wm−1K−1 which is more than twice as that of Al2O3. The thermal-expansion coefficient of this dielectric is 6.3ppm∕°C which is comparable to that of silicon used in microelectronic circuitry. Furthermore, 0.83ZnAl2O4–0.17TiO2 dielectric is chemically inert with silicon, which increases its applicability in microelectronic packages.

Abstract: The influence of conducting phase characteristics on dielectric properties of insulator-conductor composites was demonstrated by studying composites of polytetrafluoroethylene and different volume fractions of La0.5Sr0.5CoO3−y (LSCO). LSCO was prepared as coarse grained powder by solid state reaction and as fine powder by citrate gel method. The composites with fine powder of LSCO showed a rapid increase in dielectric constant and conductivity at 30%, while the corresponding value for coarse powder was 50%. The percolative behavior was found when the interparticle distance reduced to ∼250nm in both cases. The permittivity and conductivity of the composites were found to increase with the interfacial area.
