Abstract: The USA and China have been engaged in a trade war since 2018—an economic tussle that has had repercussions for not only the two countries directly involved but also for their trading partners participating in the industrial global value chains (GVC). To assess the gravity of the dispute, we measure the impacts of the US‐China bilateral tariff hikes on the participants, as well on their trading partners linked by global supply chains, whose structure is estimated using the OECD Inter‐Country Input–Output Model. Our assessment relies on two metrics: the effective rate of protection (ERP) and total factor productivity (TFP). We calculate ERPs following a methodology that reflects the globally fragmented production linkages. From our assessments, the tariff increases raised the ERPs of the warring countries but lowered those of their trading partners. Moreover, the bilateral tariff hikes significantly raised the input tariffs of many major trading partners through the transmission of GVCs. Consequently, the TFPs of the major trading countries are likely to fall by 0.16 to 0.41 per cent.

Abstract: The management of marine waste is an increasingly complex issue facing the world today. Our study provides an interesting take on the issue of marine waste by examining how Indonesian indigenous communities can deal with plastic marine pollution. While there is an obvious need for mitigating plastic use, for effective legislative policies regulating plastic waste management, and to do more to develop sustainable waste management practices there are also opportunities for indigenous communities to take an innovative approach by using plastic waste in a manner that drives economic development from both non-market and neoliberal theoretical ideologies. As part of this assessment, alongside Indonesian ex les we include ex les of plastic re-use by indigenous communities of the Philippines and Australia. Moreover, our study highlights some of the areas in which this is being done in the fields of art and infrastructure development.

Abstract: Although many scholars have acknowledged inconsistencies in the use of the retail brand term within the existing empirical literature, no one has conducted a systematic study to clarify the confusion of terms. Aiming at unifying the use of terms, this study aims to explore the terms that best express each retail brand concept, and discusses the definitions of proposed terms that can distinguish the connotation of different retail brand concepts. Through a systematic review, 463 articles were obtained, from which retail brand terms and their definitions were further extracted. Semantic analysis and content analysis were adopted to analyze terms and definitions, respectively. Semantically, the terms that best express four levels of retail brand concepts are own product brand, store brand, platform brand and retailer brand. Six key elements to distinguish different levels of a retail brand are identified through the content analysis of definitions, and on this basis, four proposed terms are defined. Noting that no study focuses on the conceptual confusion of retail brands in recent decades, the findings are expected to clarify the confusion of terms and unify the use of terms, hence facilitating the communication between scholars and the sharing of research results.

Abstract: Urban planners, government leaders, and the farming community have noted the important role cities play in producing their own food to manage higher levels of domestic demand, food insecurity, environmental concerns and affordability. To better understand these issues our research examines urban farming in particular, the use of vertical farming methods. Such approaches can be used to overcome not only food safety and land resource issues, but also better manage the threats posed by rapid urbanisation. With technological developments in hydroponics, aeroponics and aquaponics, vertical farming has become a much more efficient and affordable means of farming in urban spaces. Overall, these high-tech systems signify a shift in the ways farming and food production can be operationalised. The results from our analysis show that Singapore, a tropical city in Asia, is making significant strides in vertical farming with substantial public and private investment in R& D through high-tech, high-yielding, land-limited farms in high-rise buildings. Despite these initiatives, Singapore faces a highly constrained urban environment where land scarcity is exacerbated by a complex regulatory land use framework.

Abstract: This study examines the way in which economic and non-economic factors impact the outcome of international FTA negotiations from an industrial sector perspective. This study demonstrates that the result of negotiations, as measured by the share of duty free tariff lines, is significantly affected by both non-economic and economic factors. The results from the study showed that five of the eight variables tested were statistically significant, of which two were non-economic (union membership and ruling party ideology) and three were economic (import penetration, industrial sector unemployment rate and the most favoured nation rate of duty free tariff lines) in nature. This empirical study also draws a number of conclusions as to the implications of these findings.

Abstract: This study examines the intra-industry trade relationship that China has with its 20 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation partners during the 2000–2014 period. By providing both a developing and developed country focus this research examines both the trends and determinants of these trade relationships from inter-industry trade, vertical inter-industry trade, horizontal inter-industry trade, and inter-industry perspectives. This study found that China’s highest levels of inter-industry trade are with Japan, Korea, and Taiwan and that these relationships have been trending upwards from both horizontal inter-industry trade and vertical inter-industry trade perspectives since 2000. While our empirical assessment using country- and industry-specific variables showed that tariff rates, market size, and factor endowments play an important role within the make-up of inter-industry trade. Finally, from a policy perspective, our study highlights the need for China to not only push forward with its Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership trade negotiations, but also branch out by gaining additional support from other Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation partners so as to further enhance its role in the region.

Abstract: The WTO dispute settlement mechanism (DSM) is now facing a crisis of paralysis. Given such a challenging environment, this study examines factors affecting the participation of the WTO DSM by using bilateral data of WTO members from 1995 to 2017. Moreover, we provide a comparative analysis of the factors affecting the filing of cases at the WTO DSM between developed and developing countries across this period. By conducting the rare-event logistic regression method, we find that the export intensity, retaliation capability, economic power and economic threat are the main factors determining the initiation of trade disputes by WTO members. Moreover, the results from seemingly unrelated regressions suggest that economic power, proxied by the complainant country’s gross national income, is not a vital issue of importance that developed countries need to consider when deciding to initiate trade disputes however, in contrast, developing countries still see it as an important factor affecting the use of DSMs, especially when the target countries are developed countries. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that in the later stage of the WTO, the impact of economic power no longer has any differential influence. On balance, these results reflect the efforts of the WTO to build a fair and rule-based DSM while also highlighting the urgent practical significance of maintaining a solid and effective mechanism for handling international trade disputes.

Abstract: No longer simply a fad, social media-based technologies are used by organizations to create innovative ideas that can enhance both a firm’s product offerings and the ways in which it conducts its business activities. Despite its many apparent uses and benefits, there are several barriers associated with their use, including legal, security, and privacy risk. Grounded in the technology adoption theory, the purpose of this study is to understand how businesses perceive the benefits of and barriers to social media and its effects on adoption. Employing the partial least squares method, a research model was developed and tested via a survey of 117 senior employees from organizations in South Korea and New Zealand. The results suggest that the benefits due to social media, such as brand affinity, sales opportunities, and customer support, positively affect social business adoption whereas a lack of social media strategy and security concerns negatively affect social business adoption. The results of the study have important implications for business managers and researchers.
