Abstract: The study explored content creation and sharing experiences of local travel influencers in Meishan City, China. A qualitative phenomenological methodology was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 15 local travel influencers based on social exchange theory and its reciprocal principles. Thematic content analysis was used to analyse data. Study findings showed that being a local travel influencer was an emerging occupation requiring comprehensive competence in specific contextual and cultural backgrounds. Although travel influencers’ initial rise to popularity was often serendipitous, supportive policies from the local tourism community could assist travel influencers in achieving sustainable tourism. Local travel influencers face several challenges including staying authentic, monetizing content, dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, avoiding homogenous content, and managing work load. Local travel influencers could serve as a significant liaison between tourists and the local tourism community by collaborating with local tourism stakeholders, building a local multi-layer media matrix, co-creating promotional content, and live-streaming e-commerce. Study findings have theoretical and practical implications for tourism stakeholders in integrating regional tourism community development with local influencer networks.

Abstract: Soap opera is a potent cultural site for Malay women to imagine the meanings of modernity. Initially the Malaysian government promoted non-Western soap operas to circulate the state’s vision of alternative Asian-style modernities. Now the authorities have voiced a concern that some images and discourses of transnational modernity articulated even in non-Western soaps pose a threat to the cultural integrity of Malay women. This paper studies the significance of non-Western soaps to an understanding of gendered expectations and the progressive re-territorialization of the socio-political order in the context of an ethos of mediatized cultural globalization. Our referent is patriarchal Islamist state Malaysia. We conduct an empirical case study exploring Malay Muslim women’s negotiation and understanding of non-Western soap operas in Malaysia. Results from a series of guided in-depth interviews with 12 rural and urban Malay women enable us to understand how they negotiate their position as viewers of these non-Western soaps, given the criticism about the supposed immorality of these programs. We argue that Malay women act as strategic audiences who mobilize sophisticated viewing tactics that we call ‘watching competencies’ to negotiate the pleasures and potential conflicts of their access to non-Western soaps. This research indicates that Malay women are neither passive, vulnerable consumers of foreign soap, nor easily manipulated by those who claim authority rather, they confidently assert their autonomy as consumer-citizens of a modern Islamic state.

Abstract: This article examines the implementation of worldbuilding in the Malaysian animation franchise, BoBoiBoy, through the portrayal of ‘Power Sphera Universe’ across various installments. Worldbuilding refers to the creation of a fictional storyworld in which a set storyline(s) take place. Within the scope of storytelling, worldbuilding plays an integral role as it enables a storyworld to sustain or encompass multiple storylines that were produced for various media platforms. This study will argue that the portrayal of ‘Power Sphera Universe’ in various installments across the BoBoiBoy animation franchise ensures that the encapsulated and uniquely developed stories remain interrelated to one another, allowing the audience to enhance their understanding and comprehension over the overall transmedia storyworld. The discussion will visit the utilization of contextualizing devices as a primary means of worldbuilding across several storylines within the BoBoiBoy animation franchise

Abstract: This article analyzes the discourse of Orientalism in Saladin: The Animated Series for the first episode entitled Rising Star. Edward Said (1978) in his book Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient (1978) opposed Western perspectives on the East and analyzed postcolonial literary works in historical and social contexts, and describes orientalist discrimination in speculating and specifying data sources for particular interests. This study draws on a series of animations directed by Steve Bristow that showcased the leading Islamic figure of the crusade, Sultan Salahuddin al-Ayubi (1137-1193) or known as Saladin by the Western world. Taking the personality of an Islamic character to be the main character in the animated series is something to be proud of, but the fact about Sultan Salahuddin al-Ayubi’s personality has been distorted in Saladin’s character. This study looked at the orientalist attacks on the personality of Sultan Salahuddin al-Ayubi and found that the Saladin’s character was portrayed as physically weak, shallow-minded, and disobedient to his father. The whole of this first episode shows the misrepresentation of facts and the distortion of the image of Salahuddin al-Ayubi.

Abstract: Discussion of Orientalism through Semiotic Analysis in Animation ABSTRACT This study reveals, interprets and understands the oriental influence in Saladin: The Animated Series through the semiotic analysis of Roland Barthes. This study looks at the semiotic elements found in the animated series through a system of signs and this conceptual framework of Barthes is ided into two components, signifier and signified. This sign system is used to look at the symbols through frames in this animation. The analysis of this study examines the changes in the title, poster, use of language, which led to the occurrence of orientalism discourse to disgrace the Islamic figure, Salahuddin al-Ayubi. The findings of the study found that the Westerners used Saladin as a title and not Salahuddin al-Ayubi. Next, the changes in the portrayal of Islamic figure in the poster of the animated film Saladin and Saladin: The Animated Series. There was confusion when the main character of this animated series, Saladin, was not placed in the middle of the poster. Each of the posters shows the influence of orientalism. In terms of language use, the animated series shows the acceptance of external influences such as the use of English as the primary language. The Arabic language is used for the audience in the Middle East and the Malay language is positioned only as a subtitle. The results show that orientalism tarnishes the identity of this Islamic figure. Keywords: Orientalism, semiotic, sign system, signifier, signified.

Incomplete health information, misleading and incomprehensible facts can create a risk to the public. Being responsible, fair and reporting the truth is a fundamental principle of a journalist and is also a Shariah claim. As such, this qualitative study focuses on the practice of Malaysian journalistic professional ethics in health news reporting. The findings reveal a new concept of news reporting among health news journalists, namely civic-oriented journalism. The concept is capable to producing a balanced health story. Therefore, this study urges that civic-oriented journalism practices need to be strengthened in the planning of developing health literacy in the community.

Abstract: Audiences’ shifts to online and interactive engagement have posed numerous challenges to Bangladesh’s media ecology. This descriptive case study examines the current state of digital transition, complexities and competitions faced by the local television industry by putting Ntv Online, one of the first-generation television station’s online portals and convergence pioneers, at the centre of the discussion. It explains how Ntv Online is internalizing and responding to convergence practice from both media market dynamics and organizational perspectives. This study believes that issues other than those raised by media technology are equally important in comprehending the digital transition of Bangladesh’s television industry. The key findings indicate that the hybrid regime’s intervention in free media practices as well as complex market competition from massive tech platforms limit Bangladesh’s trajectory as a competitor in the global digital media arcade. This also implies that existing ownership and corporate structures may not support the required interoperability between management and journalists. However, the digital transitions of the private TV industry may pave the way for the creation of a democratic space for public deliberation, which is essentially demanded in the current hybrid regime’s intervention in actualizing this shift.
