Abstract: Vasectomy is a highly effective male contraception. However, the 2007 to 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Surveys reported no vasectomy cases in Bangka Belitung Islands. This study aimed to identify the number and its barriers to low vasectomy use in the Bangka Belitung Islands. The combination of qualitative and quantitative methods used in this study. This study utilized health clinics’ reports between 2015 and 2018 to identify whether or not vasectomy was executed in Bangka Belitung Islands. In-depth interviews were also carried out for medical practitioners, husbands, and wives to point out other crucial purposes of low vasectomy cases in the area. Vasectomy is regarded as a sexual displeasure contraceptive method. Those husbands had perceptions that vasectomy was similar to castration. They consider it as a sickening procedure. The wives perceived that vasectomy could make their husbands promiscuous. The misconceptions and stigma had been found as barriers for the low practice of vasectomy in the Islands. Reproductive health counseling for both husbands and wives need to be intensified to clarify those misconceptions about vasectomy. Vasectomy-specified c aign messages through various media channels should be conducted for couples in the area.

Abstract: Using contraception is essential for protecting women from the risk of unintended pregnancy. However, contraceptive discontinuation, caused by side effects of contraceptives or health problems, is still high. This study aimed to assess the impact of injectable and pill contraception discontinuation due to side effects or health problems on unintended pregnancy among women aged 15-49 years in Indonesia. This study is based on the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey. As many as 1,613 women who discontinued their oral contraceptives and 5,022 women who discontinued their injectables were followed retrospectively. Pregnancy rates were tested for differences between categories using survival analysis. It was found that one year after stopping contraceptives due to side effects, almost 16-17% of oral/injectable contraceptive users were already pregnant. The pregnancy rate was higher among women aged less than 25 years. Unplanned pregnancy occurred more frequently among women who were not working than women who were working. Counseling services need to be strengthened by improving provider knowledge and skills to give comprehensive information including contraceptives’ side effects.

Abstract: Frequent inter-spousal communication is regarded as an indicator of safe family planning practice. Nevertheless, communication about family planning within couples in Indonesia is still largely unexplored. This study assessed the levels of inter-spousal communication about family planning and its associated determinants, using cross-sectional and nationally representative data from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS), from a randomly selected cohort of 8,925 currently-married couples. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, inter-spousal communication behaviors, and attitudes regarding family planning were collected. The dependent variable in this study is how frequently couples discuss family planning, based on wives’ responses. The analyses were stratified based on the frequency of inter-spousal communication: never, once or twice, or more often. The results of the study were greater husband approval of family planning and communication with family planning field workers, and that those encouraged inter-spousal communication in Indonesia.

Abstract: Although the fertility rate in East Nusa Tenggara Province has decreased over the last 10 years, the birth rate is still higher than other provinces in Indonesia. Interestingly, the infertility index for breastfeeding in East Nusa Tenggara Province is the lowest compared to other provinces in Indonesia, which means that women of childbearing age in East Nusa Tenggara Province breastfeed their children with the longest breastfeeding period. Therefore, this study aims to determine the fertility decomposition and characteristics of breastfeeding mothers in East Nusa Tenggara Province in 2017. The data source of this study uses the results of the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) using women of childbearing age who have given birth. The analysis used in this study included fertility decomposition analysis and continued with univariable, bivariable, logistic regression analysis. The results of this study indicate that breastfeeding as a proxy for infertility towards fertility in the province of East Nusa Tenggara has an index value (Ci) of 0.72 and after controlling for maternal characteristics variables, age, education and work status of mothers are the factors most related to breastfeeding behavior in East Nusa Tenggara in 2017. Promotion of good breastfeeding techniques and the benefits of breastfeeding needs to be improved in order to improve the quality of life of infants, spacing pregnancies and reduce the incidence of tengkes (stunting).

Abstract: This paper evaluates whether mass media exposures, specifically television, radio, newspaper/magazine and internet, were effective tools for utilizing contraception among Indonesian couples. A s le of 8,925 Indonesian couples were selected based on the result of the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey. Logistic regression models were used to predict recent media exposure (television, radio, newspaper/magazine and internet) to family planning messages and its association with contraceptive use among Indonesian couples. Internet exposure was found to be significant, and it had a strong effect on the likelihood that the Indonesian couples uses modern contraceptives. Region and number of living children were also found as significant effects on the modern contraceptive use. As such, internet as a promotion tool in c aigning family planning is more effective than television, radio, and newspaper/magazine) in improving contraceptive use among Indonesian couples.

Abstract: Infant mortality is a sensitive indicator to measure the health condition of a population. Despite large declines in infant mortality rates in Indonesia, the people living in rural areas are the most affected. This study aims to analyze the causes of infant mortality in rural Indonesia and suggested strategies for its reduction. This study is an analytical cross-sectional design based on the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS) dataset for children. The information on infant deaths collected from those mothers who experienced infant deaths. Series of logistic regression models were used to select the significant factors affecting infant mortality in rural Indonesia. Infant mortality is associated with intermediate social determinants such as birth order, birth weight, and breastfeeding status. Socio-demographic factors such as the educational status of mothers, wealth quintile, the smoking habit of the mother, age of mother at first delivery, and sex of the baby are also related to infant mortality. The most crucial factors in rural Indonesia were the age of first-time mothers. As a strategy for addressing the issue of infant mortality in rural areas, the result of the study highlights the need for decreasing adolescent pregnancies among the youngest age groups. Pregnant mothers in the youngest age group should be supported by quality maternal health services to ensure their pregnancies in healthy condition. The focus of breastfeeding promotion programs should be encouraged, particularly on early initiation and duration of breastfeeding.

Abstract: For more than a decade, the adoption of male contraceptive methods in Indonesia was very low compared to female methods. Yet, in some settings family planning programs focused heavily on female contraceptive services, while male contraceptive services tend to be ignorant. Information from both husbands and wives is needed to obtain an accurate understanding of contraceptive use-behavior within married-couples. Hence, the objective of this study is to investigate factors associated with male contraceptive use among Indonesian couples. This study uses the couple-matched data from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). The analytical s le included 8,427 couples. Chi-square tests and binary logistic regression models were utilized for data analysis. Findings from the bivariate and binary logistic regressions indicate that couples lived in urban areas, couples who attained secondary and higher education, couples who do not want another child, couples who discuss family planning with their spouses, and couples whose wives experienced side effect of female contraception were significantly associated with male contraceptive uptake among Indonesian couples. The results suggest that increasing male contraceptive uptake should be encouraged through spousal communication about family planning.
