Seawater sulphate heritage governed early Late Miocene methane consumption in the long-lived Lake Pannon

Abstract: Sulphate deficiency makes lake environments a key source of atmospheric methane because sulphate-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane (SD-AOM) is hindered. Miocene to Pliocene Lake Pannon was the largest European lake, although the extent of its methane production remains unclear. When sulphate is available, SD-AOM occurs commonly in anoxic sediments and is recorded by authigenic iron sulphides. Here we identify abundant tubular pyrite and greigite aggregates from Lake Pannon sediments, which record brackish early lake conditions at ~11.3 Ma. The iron sulphides are morphologically similar to those reported elsewhere from methane seep and gas hydrate environments. Microscale sulphur isotope analysis and multiple sulphur isotope patterns of iron sulphides, and elevated sedimentary Ba/Al and Mo/Al ratios, are consistent with their derivation from SD-AOM under marine conditions. These results indicate substantial methane consumption in early Lake Pannon, and that sulphate was the dominant oxidant for AOM, which reduced the release of sedimentary methane to the atmosphere. SD-AOM signals archived by iron sulphides are valuable for evaluating methane consumption in lacustrine sediments.
Geophagy Is Associated with Growth Faltering in Children in Rural Bangladesh.

Abstract: To determine the relationship between geophagy (mouthing of dirt, sand, clay, or mud) and growth faltering in young children. We examined linear growth as height and weight standardized by age and sex, and weight standardized by height, in a cohort of children aged 6-36 months in rural Mirzapur, Bangladesh. We determined geophagy behavior at baseline through caregiver report. Anthropometric measurements were assessed at baseline and at a 1-year follow-up. We found that among children not stunted at baseline, those with caregiver-reported geophagy at baseline grew less over 1 year compared with their peers, with a difference in the change of standardized height for age and sex of -0.31 (95% CI, -0.61 to -0.01). These findings show that caregiver-reported geophagy was associated with growth faltering in a pediatric population in rural Bangladesh. Future studies are needed to learn more about this exposure pathway and its relevance to child growth.

Association between peri‐operative angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin‐2 receptor blockers and acute kidney injury in major elective non‐cardiac surgery: a multicentre, prospectiv

Abstract: The peri-operative use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin-2 receptor blockers is thought to be associated with an increased risk of postoperative acute kidney injury. To reduce this risk, these agents are commonly withheld during the peri-operative period. This study aimed to investigate if withholding angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin-2 receptor blockers peri-operatively reduces the risk of acute kidney injury following major non-cardiac surgery. Patients undergoing elective major surgery on the gastrointestinal tract and/or the liver were eligible for inclusion in this prospective study. The primary outcome was the development of acute kidney injury within seven days of operation. Adjusted multi-level models were used to account for centre-level effects and propensity score matching was used to reduce the effects of selection bias between treatment groups. A total of 949 patients were included from 160 centres across the UK and Republic of Ireland. From this population, 573 (60.4%) patients had their angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin-2 receptor blockers withheld during the peri-operative period. One hundred and seventy-five (18.4%) patients developed acute kidney injury there was no difference in the incidence of acute kidney injury between patients who had their angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin-2 receptor blockers continued or withheld (107 (18.7%) vs. 68 (18.1%), respectively p = 0.914). Following propensity matching, withholding angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin-2 receptor blockers did not demonstrate a protective effect against the development of postoperative acute kidney injury (OR (95%CI) 0.89 (0.58-1.34) p = 0.567).
