Abstract: This paper presents crystal chemistry and U-Pb isotopic data for titanite (or sphene, CaTiSiO5) fromPrecambrian granitoid plutons of distinct tectonic settings within the Eastern Brazilian shield. Despite thefact that most titanite ages are related to partial lead-loss, resetting or crystallization during metamorphicevents, chemistry data reflect the magmatic history of the plutons, specially the Ti4+/Al+Fe3+ ratio. It isdemonstrated that for plutons of different crystallization ages (Archean, Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic)the measured Ti4+/Al+Fe3+ ratios of titanite grains are characteristic of the source region from which themagma was extracted, and the ratios remain unchanged during subsequent metamorphic events. HigherTi4+/Al+Fe3+ values ( 9) are found in predominantly mantle-derived granitoid plutons whilst crust-derivedgranitoid rocks have lower ratios. Therefore, titanite crystal chemistry may be used to discriminate magmasources of granitoid rocks regardless their age and metamorphic history.

Abstract: Information about s le adequacy that represents soil chemical attributes distribution are fundamental for a better rationalization of the use of correctives and fertilizers. The objective was to evaluate the variability of these attributes and to size the minimum number of composite s les to represent the fertility of forest soils. The total area planted was 9,101ha, constituted of 265 commercial eucalypt stands. The 687 soil composite s les obtained were for chemical analysis. It was evaluated the performance of two exploratory analysis techniques and six s ling procedures. The attributes P, K, Ca, Mg and S presented higher coefficient of variation ( %). In contrast, the distributions of Al, organic matter and, mainly, pH were the most homogeneous. The s le error was smaller as the amount of composite s les increased. The representative of all chemical attributes (s le error of 5%) was achieved with a minimum of 309 (one each 29ha, 1:29) and 295 (1:31) composite s les from s ling procedures simple casual and stratified by altitude class, respectively. Both procedures were promising for soil s ling, especially, when applying the boxplot for identification and removal of outliers.

COLONIZING VEGETATION DYNAMICS IN THREE AREAS DEGRADED BY MININGIN SOUTHERN SERRA DO ESPINHAÇO ABSTRACT: The evaluation of the process of plant succession in degraded places is an important tool to define recovery strategies. Thus, considering the current situation of degradation in forest ecosystems, the present study aimed to study the dynamics of the floristic composition of the colonizing vegetation, in three degraded areas in the process of natural regeneration, in the Serra do Espinhaço Meridional. In the first inventory, all tree-shrub in iduals with DAS30 ≥ 3 cm were s led. In the second inventory, dead in iduals were recorded, survivors were remeasured and recruited in iduals were measured and identified (DAS30 ≥ 3 cm). The dynamics rates were calculated: mortality, recruitment, gain and loss in the basal area and number of in iduals for each area. The H 'values obtained for the areas were compared in pairs by the Hutcheson t test. The pattern observed in the three areas was similar and the most significant changes during the two inventories were the significant increase in density and the rapid increase in the total basal area. All the structural indicators analyzed showed that the areas are in the process of initial construction, but the area degraded by gold mining is in a more advanced successional stage when compared to the area degraded by the voçorocamento process and the area degraded by diamond mining. Keywords: floristic composition human impacts temporal heterogeneity ecological succession.

Abstract: U-Pb SHRIMP and Sm-Nd isotopic ages were determined for felsic metavolcanic rocks from the Silvânia Sequence and Jurubatuba Granite in the central part of the Brasília Belt. Zircon grains from a metavolcanic s le yielded 2115 ± 23 Ma and from the granite yielded 2089 ± 14 Ma, interpreted as crystallization ages of these rocks. Six metavolcanic s les of the Silvânia Sequence yielded a six-point whole-rock Sm-Nd isochron indicating a crystallization age of 2262 ± 110 Ma and positive epsilonNd(T) = +3.0 interpreted as a juvenile magmatic event. Nd isotopic analyses on s les from the Jurubatuba Granite have Paleoproterozoic T DM model ages between 2.30 and 2.42 Ga and epsilonNd(T) values vary between -0.22 and -0.58. The oldest T DM value refers to a sedimentary xenolith in the granite. These results suggest crystallization ages of Silvânia volcanics and Jurubatuba Granite are the first evidence of a ca. 2.14-2.08 juvenile magmatic event in the basement of the central part of the Brasília Belt that implies the presence of arc/suture hidden in reworked basement of the Brasília Belt.

ZONING ENVIRONMENTAL FRAGILITY OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPIZED ECOSYSTEMS BY MULTICRITERIA EVALUATION ABSTRACT: Fragmentation of ecosystems is one of the implications of the land use and the occupation process, especially in landscapes altered by agricultural or forestry crops. In this context, the present study aimed to determine the environmental fragility of the Capelinha municipality, Jequitinhonha Valley, Minas Gerais, Brazil, by a multiple criteria evaluation technique using ArcGIS ™ software 10.3.1 and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). After generating maps of slope classes, soils, river hierarchy, geological domains, rainfall and current land use, weights of fragility were assigned to each of the factors, established based on classical methodology, those being: (I) (II) Slightly Low, (II) Medium, (IV) High and (V) Extremely High. Through Weighted Linear Combination and map algebra, maps of potential and emergent environmental fragility were generated. The methodology was commensurate to the task, which was supported by the AHP method and observation of the characteristics occurrences of the variables that corroborated with the sites of greater or lesser fragility. The maps generated here may support and enhance land use strategies for environmental restoration, as well as providing insights on spatial planning and management of environmental services. Keywords: ecosystem management environmental planning environmental restoration map algebra geographic information system.

Abstract: Geographic Information System tools, combined with mathematical methods for complex geospatial scientific investigations, are essential for environmental zoning. Among these tools, environmental fragility models evaluate criteria related to the physical attributes of the landscape to ensure multi-disciplinarity of the information plans used in a study. However, questions are raised on the priority allotted to each criterion or environmental factor within a multi-criteria analysis model. In this sense, the analytic hierarchy process is another mathematical model that is used in decision theory, which sorts criteria hierarchically. This study aims to use the AHP method as a tool to support multi-criteria decision making as applied to environmental fragility mapping, using the Jequitinhonha River Basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil, as a case study. The application of the AHP method provided a hierarchy of five important environmental criteria for the environmental fragility mapping. The use of AHP allowed the modeling of empirical evaluations in mathematically consistent results, to provide better conciseness in geospatial processes. Therefore, it is an adequate method to minimize subjectivity in environmental and territorial planning. It can also help the management of priority zones for conservation, preservation, or ecological restoration.

Abstract: The theory of landscape ecology applied to the methods of spatial analysis helps to understand changes in the structure of forest remnants. In view of this theory, the objective of the present study was to analyze the structure of a fragmented area between the years 1979 and 2015 through calculation of landscape metrics for arboreal, shrubby and herbaceous vegetation classes. Vegetation classes were classified with visits to the field, interpretation of aerial photographs from 1979 and supervised classification of Landsat 8 from 2015. The metrics calculated for each class were area and total number of fragments, total edge and average connectivity among the fragments. The analysis of structure found that it changed negatively due to an increase in the number of small fragments, which increased the intensity of edge effects and reduced connectivity between fragments for all classes.

ABSTRACT: Crystallochemical standards of garnet from rocks in different metamorphic grades generated duringthe Brasiliano Orogeny were investigated. Four kinds of rocks containing garnet were selected: ultrahightemperature granulite, granulitized granites, paragranulites and kyanite-garnet-muscovite schist.End-member calculations indicate significant variations in Fe and Mg contents, and little variation in Caand Mn. All analyzed garnet s les belong to the almandine-pyrope series. Garnet from micaschistpresents the highest amount (%) of Fe molecules (alm76py15gro6sp2), followed by garnet of granulitizedgranites (alm69-66py20-26gro6-9sp2-3), paragranulites (alm62-52py42-32gro4-6sp1-2) and UHT granulite(alm63py23gro13sp1).In all analysed garnet grains rims have higher iron content than cores. Mg and Ca contents in UHTgranulite garnet present a negative correlation with Fe, showing gradual decrease of these elementstowards the crystal rim. On the other hand, in granulitized granites, Ca and Mg remain constantthroughout the crystal. Garnet crystals of UHT granulite and granulitized granites, which have the oldestSm-Nd isochron ages (633-625 Ma), display the highest values of Mg/(Mg+Fe). Garnet from paragranulite, with Sm-Nd isochron age of 606 Ma, presents high values of Ca/(Ca+Mg). The dispersion seems toindicate that the isotopic system garnet in s les of paragranulite was opened due to retrometamorphicand/or deformational events.

Abstract: Metamorphic garnet from the Anápolis-Itauçu Complex (AIC), central Brazil, were investigated by electron microprobe analyses and Mössbauer spectroscopy, in order to contribute on their geological history. The data were further extended by magmatic s les from complex and simple pegmatites, as reported by Eeckhout et al. (2002). Three clear chemical tendencies within garnets from AIC rocks were revealed. From Mössbauer spectroscopy data it is obvious that ferrous iron is present at dodecahedral site. Very small amounts of ferric iron at octahedral site of garnet structure are additionally present in garnets from s le of ultra-high temperature (UHT) granulites from AIC, implying slightly oxidizing conditions during this metamorphicevent. In addition, a higher degree of structural disorder has been discerned in these s les. Keywords: Garnet, petrogenetic indicator, hydroxyl, Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Abstract: Targeted selective treatment (TST) requires the ability to identify the animals for which anthelmintic treatment will result in the greatest benefit to the entire flock. Various phenotypic traits have previously been suggested as determinant criteria for TST however, the weight gain benefit and impact on anthelmintic efficacy for each determinant criterion is expected to be dependent upon the level of nematode challenge and the timing of anthelmintic treatment. A mathematical model was used to simulate a population of 10,000 parasitologically naïve Scottish Blackface lambs (with heritable variation in host-parasite interactions) grazing on medium-quality pasture (grazing density=30 lambs/ha, crude protein=140g/kg DM, metabolisable energy=10MJ/kg DM) with an initial larval contamination of 1000, 3000 or 5000 Teladorsagia circumcincta L3/kg DM. Anthelmintic drenches were administered to 0, 50 or 100% of the population on a single occasion. The day of anthelmintic treatment was independently modelled for every day within the 121day simulation. Where TST scenarios were simulated (50% treated), lambs were either chosen by random selection or according to highest faecal egg count (FEC, eggs/g DM faeces), lowest live weight (LW, kg) or lowest growth rate (kg/day). Average lamb empty body weight (kg) and the resistance (R) allele frequency amongst the parasite population on pasture were recorded at slaughter (day 121) for each scenario. Average weight gain benefit and increase in R allele frequency for each determinant criterion, level of initial larval contamination and day of anthelmintic treatment were calculated by comparison to a non-treated population. Determinant criteria were evaluated according to average weight gain benefit ided by increase in R allele frequency to determine the benefit per R. Whilst positive phenotypic correlations were predicted between worm burden and FEC using LW as the determinant criterion provided the greatest benefit per R for all levels of initial larval contamination and day of anthelmintic treatment. Hence, LW was identified as the best determinant criterion for use in a TST regime. This study supports the use of TST strategies as benefit per R predictions for all determinant criteria were greater than those predicted for the 100% treatment group, representing an increased long-term productive benefit resulting from the maintenance of anthelmintic efficacy. Whilst not included in this study, the model could be extended to consider other parasite species and host breed parameters, variation in climatic influences on larval availability and grass growth, repeated anthelmintic treatments and variable proportional flock treatments.

TEMPORAL ANALYSIS OF HEAT FOCI AT ESPINHAÇO RANGE BIOSPHERE RESERVE ABSTRACT: The object of this paper was to evaluate the use of the Kernel density method in the spatial and temporal analysis of heat foci in integral protection conservation units of the Espinhaço Range Biosphere Reserve. For that, vector images of the years 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2017 were analyzed and processing was performed by QGIS software 2.18.16, from the overlapping of these with the records of heat sources. The heat foci density was calculated using the Kernel estimator and five levels of classification were used: very low, low, medium, high and very high. It was demonstrated the heat sources representation for the cited years and their relation to the concentration of fire risks in areas of the RBSE, leading to the perception of the simulations over the years, corroborating with forest fire records. The Kernel Density estimation showed the ability to indicate the distribution and intensity of the foci, constituting an interesting tool to guide prevention and surveillance activities. Keywords: Kernel density, geoprocessing, forest fires, environmental monitoring.

Abstract: Invasive macrophytes are considered problematic in natural environments and hydroelectric reservoirs. Climate changes, the occurrence of watercourses, and biotic interactions influence the biological invasion of macrophytes. Native species can correlate with invasives positively or negatively. Urochloa subquadripara is an invasive in natural or disturbed habitats co-occurring with the natives Eichhornia crassipes and Salvinia minima. Aquatic plant communities can be altered by climate change, so species distribution models (SDMs) are important tools for predicting in-vaded areas. This work aimed to make an SDM for U. subquadripara correlating with the poten-tial distribution of native species E. crassipes and S. minima. Occurrence data for U. subquadripara, E. crassipes, and S. minima were collected from databases and in consultation with the published literature. Parameters encompassing biological information of the species were entered into the CLIMEX software and used to generate the Ecoclimatic Index (EI). The species co-occurrence was performed based on multicriteria decision-making (MCDM), and weights were assigned using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). It was observed that U. subquadripara, E. crassipes, and S. minima have a higher occurrence in tropical and subtropical regions however, it is predicted that, from climatic changes, these species may move to high latitudes. According to climate change, the risk of invasion by U. subquadripara in the northern hemisphere is mainly in lakes, while in the southern hemisphere, the areas conducive to invasions are rivers and reservoirs. In general, emerging and floating macrophyte species such as U. subquadripara, E. crassipes, and S. minima will be favored, causing suppression of submerged species. Therefore, identifying the potential distribution of these species allows the creation of pre-invasion intervention strategies.

SPACE-TEMPORAL ANALYSIS OF VEGETABLE COVERAGE IN A HYDROGRAPHIC BASIN OF THE REGION OF MATOPIBA, BRAZIL ABSTRACT:The hydrographic basin of the Uruçuí-Preto river, Piauí, with an area of 15.777 km², has been characterized over the last 30 years by agricultural expansion, integrating the agricultural frontier of MATOPIBA, composed of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia. The objective of this study was to evaluate the change in the vegetation cover in this basin from 1984 to 2015. Images of the TM and OLI sensors of the Landsat 5 and 8 satellites, respectively, were used to elaborate mosaics and vegetation enhancement through the Vegetation Index (IVDN), to obtain the evolution of the change in land cover. The supervised classification (Maximum Likelihood) was carried out in five classes: exposed soil, anthropic area, sparse vegetation, sparse vegetation and dense vegetation. The results showed intense anthropization in the analyzed area. In 1984, the exposed soil class corresponded to 390.3 km² of the total basin area, with an increase in 2015 to 1,498.20 km². In 1984 there were 7,743.2 km² of original vegetation cover, reduced in 2015, to 3,487.40 km², with a reduction of 45.03% of the class of dense vegetation. Abstract: The degradation of natural ecosystems triggers global environmental, economic, and social problems. To prevent this, it is necessary to identify the aptitude of priority areas for conservation or use by considering land fragility from multiple environmental and spatial perspectives. We applied the concept of environmental fragility to a hydrographic basin in southeastern Brazil that establishes (i) potential fragility levels according to slope, soil classes, geological domains, drainage hierarchy, and rainfall information using an algebraic map, and (ii) emerging fragility levels via the addition of the land-use parameters. The methodological approach involved the integration of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and weighted linear combination (WLC) into a geographic information system (GIS). The medium and slightly low fragility classes predominated in terms of potential (~60%), and emerging (~70%) environmental fragility models used to model the basin. The model indicated that high and extremely high potential fragilities were concentrated in the upper basin, a region that is considered a global bio ersity hotspot. The areas with high/extremely high classes of emerging fragility in the upper basin decreased, indicating that the natural cover classes and land-use types are not in danger. We also introduce acceptable conservation practices for land management and use according to the environmental fragility categories established in the present work. The methodology applied in this study can be replicated in other global ecoregions. It provides low-cost territorial and environmental zoning and flexible replication and can be adjusted by administrators who are interested in land-use planning.

Abstract: The present study aims to analyze the potential of areas for the implementation of ecological corridors. The study area represents a transition between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado domains and is extensively fragmented. Geographic Information System was used to determine suitable areas for the implementation of ecological corridors based on their ecological and structural potential, while multi-criteria classification was used to generate a final ecological map of the area. Weights and notes were assigned to vegetation class, river width, elevation and declivity in their respective maps, which were overlaid using ArcGis 10.3 software. Structural analysis of the area used the landscape metrics mean area, mean shape and total edge of fragments and mean connectivity among fragments in Fragstats software. The results indicated an ecologically and structurally suitable area for the implementation of ecological corridors in the study area.

Abstract: The objective of this study was to model the spatio-temporal distribution of Digitaria insularis (D. insularis) and analyze the risk of selection of glyphosate-resistant biotypes in eucalyptus cultivation in Brazil. Global data on the distribution of the specie were collected and associated with their ideal growth characteristics. The models were generated using Climex software, providing a predictive modeling technique. Biological data, species distribution, and climatic parameters were used to predict and map potential areas for the species of interest through the combination of growth and stress indices, giving rise to the Ecoclimatic Index (EI). The spatial distribution of D. insularis is predominantly in South and Central America and southern North America. The model had a good fit with the collected data and predicted higher EI values for tropical and subtropical regions, as was the case in Brazil. Species growth can occur throughout the year, with lower rates in winter, mainly in the country’s southern regions. Brazil has high climatic suitability for the occurrence of Digitaria insularis. Due to the climate suitability evidenced by the models and the expressive use of the same active ingredient, there is a risk of selecting glyphosate-resistant Digitaria insularis biotypes in eucalyptus cultivation areas.

Abstract: The early neoproterozoic evolution of eastern Minas Gerais is characterized by a history of a continental margin activity, including the accretion of suspect terranes. The Manhuaçu Terrane is one of those and is represented by a granitic continental plutonic arc and terrigeneous metasediments that reflect a continental margin. A metasedimentary gneiss belt at this margin with shallow to deep marine clastic lithologies as well as metavulcanic and metaplutonic mafic rocks was interpreted as an extensive tectonic segment with suspect development in a back-arc setting. Fragments of a volcanic arc are identified and interpreted as an evidence for a probable island-arc domain. In the studied region the Juiz de Fora and Paraiba do Sul Complexes are domains of these terranes. The distribution of magmatism in the studied region shows from west to east three different suites : 1) tholeiitic, 2) a medium to high-K cal-alkalic and 3) a high-K calc-alcalic/shoshonitic(?) magmatism which attests the evolution of early magmatism arcs (volcanic and plutonic) initially relates to ocean-plate subduction, followed by a continent-continent collision. Petrological, structural and geochemical data of mesoproterozoic/neoproterozoic metamorphic and magmatic suites of rocks are in agreement with the development of an accretionary orogeny. After a vulcanic-(island-arc) and a back-arc basin formation (by rifting of a continental margin with no spreading) in connection with eastward subduction, the island arc was accreted to a continental margin. Further subduction beneath it and a mechanism of flattening of the slab during the subduction process was responsible for the development of as granitic continental plutonic-arc (Andean-type batholith) eastwardly in a compressional setting. Continental plates became sutured and all intervening oceanic lithosphere was subducted beneath one of the converging masses. This resulted in the accretion of the Manhuaçu Microplate to the São Francisco Craton Domain. Plates continued to converge and the inversion of subduction polarity occurs resulting in a new subduction system (westward subduction) to the back of the Manhuaçu Microplate, in a easternward of the Espírito Santo state, with the establishment of a new magmatic arc of late neoproterozoic to eopaleozoic age. In this paper, only the probable early neoproterozoic volcanic (tholeiitic magmatism transitional between N-type MORB and island are basalts) and the plutonic (early continental calc-alkalic magmatism) arcs characterized by rocks with a very particular geochemistry and the back-arc basin setting will be discussed. Two alternative hypotheses to explain the evolution of these terranes may be postulated: 1) an island arc orogeny related to a westward subduction followed by a cordillerean type orogeny. With the advance of the island-arc and continent with offshore sediments, in different plates, a collision between these domains occurred. The old subduction zone was replaced by another one, eastward directed and the development of a continental magmatic arc occurred. Continental plates became sutured and all intervening oceanic lithosphere was subducted beneath one of the converging masses. Against this model are the presence of metavulcanic basic and intermediate rocks intercalated with marine and continental margin 2) an extensional ensialic setting (aborted marginal basin) in the continental margin formed during the opening of a rapidly subsiding basin, with moderately rapid mantle upwelling, pronounced thinning of the continental crust and slight crustal contaminanton, without formation of oceanic crust or an island-arc may explain the association of basic metavulcanic rocks with marine and continental metasediments. Here, the low potassium contents of a few studied metavulcanic basic rocks and theire oceanic tholeiitic affinity are not well in agreement with this setting where continental basalts (flood basalts), or rocks ( basalts or basaltics andesites) belong to the high-K calc-alkaline series are expected to occur. Nevertheless, our evidences are not unequivocal enough for theire disapprovals.

AbstractThe central region of Minas Gerais state, specifically the Iron Quadrangle and the Southern Espinhaço Range, has a unique occupation history due to mineral riches such as diamond and gold. Furthermore, it has significant ecological relevance, which has led to the declaration of the Espinhaço Range Biosphere Reserve by Unesco in 2005. To characterise and analyse the historical processes of environmental degradation of this region, the travel literature of foreign naturalists who travelled throughout the region in the 19th century was investigated. The research involved studying scripts produced from reading works, with a focus on the understanding of the landscape. Evidence of environmental degradation by gold and diamond extractivism is presented in several areas of the Estrada Real, characterised by the suppression of native vegetation by anthropic burning, change of river courses and use of mercury for mineral processing, in addition to a significant occurrence of invasive monotypic species, such as molasses grass and fern. From the analytical description in reports of travelling naturalists, the analysis of the reserve territory of the present study allows the recovery of part of a memory that binds human to nature as part of its environmental history. Keywords: travellers’ accounts, mining, mercury, burning, molasses grass.
