Religious Diversity in Australia: Rethinking Social Cohesion

Abstract: This paper argues for a reconsideration of social cohesion as an analytical concept and a policy goal in response to increasing levels of religious ersity in contemporary Australia. In recent decades, Australian has seen a revitalization of religion, increasing numbers of those who do not identify with a religion (the “nones”), and the growth of religious minorities, including Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism. These changes are often understood as problematic for social cohesion. In this paper, we review some conceptualizations of social cohesion and religious ersity in Australia, arguing that the concept of social cohesion, despite its initial promise, is ultimately problematic, particularly when it is used to defend privilege. We survey Australian policy responses to religious ersity, noting that these are varied, often piecemeal, and that the hyper erse state of Victoria generally has the most sophisticated set of public policies. We conclude with a call for more nuanced and contextualized analyses of religious ersity and social cohesion in Australia. Religious ersity presents both opportunities as well as challenges to social cohesion. Both these aspects need to be considered in the formation of policy responses.

Abstract: Australian Soul challenges the idea that religious and spiritual life in Australia is in decline. This fascinating book describes the character of religious and spiritual life in Australia today, and argues that, far from petering out, religion and spirituality are thriving. Gary Bouma, the leading expert on the state of religious life in Australia, provides the most up-to-date facts and figures and compares the 'tone' of Australian religious practices with those of other countries. Australians might be less vocal and more reticent about their religion than Americans are, but their religious and spiritual beliefs are no less potent. Australian Soul describes and analyses our religious and spiritual life in detail as well as providing a series of case studies that illustrate the range of practices and beliefs in Australia today. Abstract: Recent scholarly and media perspectives on religion and youth have often depicted young people as being apathetic when it comes to religion. The methods used in research on religion are also typically informed by outdated, fixed idea of religious identity that are no longer applicable, especially to young people. This paper confronts these issues by applying contemporary theories of religious ersity, including lived religion and religious complexity, to the findings of the Canadian Religion, Gender and Sexuality among Youth in Canada (RGSY) study, the Australian Interaction multifaith youth movement project, and the Worldviews of Australian Generation Z (AGZ) study. These three studies revealed that young people negotiate their worldview identities in complex, critical and caring ways that are far from ambivalent, and that are characterised by hybridity and questioning. We thereby recommend that policies and curricula pertaining to young people’s and societies’ wellbeing better reflect young people’s actual lived experiences of ersity.

Abstract: Melbourne’s religious ersity is increasing. This article reveals distinctive new configurations of ethno-religious ersity arising from immigration and residential mobility at a fine spatial level in different parts of one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities – Melbourne. Using the lens of super- ersity, we see beyond multicultural groups to intersections of ersities, and identify new types of ethno-religious compound in neighbourhoods that were once defined by religious patterns of solidarity. We can no longer use religious labels to describe these evolving groups because they are not defined by any dominant religion instead, we describe them in terms reflecting their other increasingly salient characteristics. At the local level in Melbourne, it is now necessary to refer to the existence not only of religious ersity but of a ‘ ersity of ersities’ in patterns of religious identification.

Abstract: Religious ersity and social cohesion have long been seen to be at odds with each other. Classical sociology, grounded in the Westphalian solution to religious conflict in Europe presumed that a single religion was necessary for social cohesion. The issue of religious ersity and social cohesion has come to the fore as once religiously monochrome societies have become erse through migration and, to a lesser degree, conversion. While European nations question the possibility of multicultural and multi-faith societies living in productive harmony, Australia offers an ex le of a successful multicultural and multi-faith society. Australia has produced a multicultural society through a policy of social inclusion and mutual respect, in contrast to European policies which produce separate community development. This cross-national comparative study reveals demographic and socio-cultural differences that are likely to explain some of the comparative success of Australia in producing social inclusion and avoiding the ‘othering’ of religious minorities, especially of Muslims. Australia has a particular demographic that features multiple substantial minority religious communities living in ways that promote daily encounters among people of different backgrounds.

Abstract: The study of the management of religious ersity has largely proceeded non-comparatively at national and organizational levels. As a result it is not yet possible to declare what promotes and what hinders the emergence of harmonious inter-religious relations in religiously erse societies. This article compares the management of religious ersity at an urban level through a comparison of Melbourne, Australia and Hong Kong. The article first describes the demographic history of these two cities and then explores their social institutions of religion and organizations promoting inter-religious harmony in order to find explanations for the postwar emergence of societies characterized by both religious ersity and inter-religious harmony. Finally, it reflects on the policy implications of these findings.

Abstract: As societies have become religiously erse in ways and extents not familiar in the recent histories of most, the issues of how to include this ersity and how to manage it, that is, questions about how to be a religiously erse society have come to the fore. As a result religion has become part of the social policy conversation in new ways. Abstract: There has been a renewed interest in social institutions and social change. However, most discussions of social change use the terms 'institutions' and 'organisations' almost interchangeably, while a few make a distinction which is then ignored, obscured or lost. Institutions are sets of norms which apply across a variety of specific organisations. Organisations are structures of social relationship, social actors arranged in positions and roles usually, but not always, deliberately arranged and designed to achieve some end. Institutions provide normative environments shaping the activities of organisations. Distinguishing institutions and organisations facilitates discussion of the relationship between them, examining the different contribution each makes in social change and making cross-national comparisons. Using ex les from the institutions of religion, education and patriarchy the relationship between institutions and organisations in social change is explored.
