Tunable enhanced Faraday rotation in a defected plasma photonic crystal under external magnetic field with different declinations

Abstract: Magneto-optical responses and the potential for tunability when changing the variables of a one-dimensional defected magnetized plasma photonic crystal have been studied using a transfer matrix method for operation in the mm-range wavelength region. The effect of the number and dielectric defect layer thickness as well as the intensity and declination angle of magnetic field on transmittance, Faraday rotation, and its ellipticity has been investigated. The results demonstrate the ability to alter the resonant modes frequency at multiple levels of precision. The structures with four, six, and eight defect layers have been investigated. The number of defect dielectric layers changes the number of resonance modes. A single defect mode appears within the photonic bandgap with four defect dielectric layers while two defect modes were observed with six layers, and three modes with eight layers. An increase in magnetic field declination decreased the Faraday rotation intensity and width of Faraday resonance mode.

Abstract: Experimental data are used in theoretical models to study the effects of input voltage and gas flow rate on plasma and background gas parameters in a voltage range where the transition from nondischarge to full‐discharge happens. To this end, a specific methane‐fed dielectric barrier discharge is used as a plasma reactor, and electrical modeling, the Boltzmann equation method, and emission spectrum analysis are employed to calculate plasma parameters and gas heating. The output of this study proves that a uniform plasma with a controllable background gas heating is achievable by the adjustment of input parameters such as voltage and gas flow rate in a well‐designed dielectric barrier discharge.

Impact of cold plasma on the biomolecules and organoleptic properties of foods: A review

Abstract: Cold plasma is formed by the nonthermal ionization of gas into free electrons, ions, reactive atomic and molecular species, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This cold plasma can be used to alter the surface of solid and liquid foods, and it offers multiple advantages over traditional thermal treatments, such as no thermal damage and increased output variation (due to the various input parameters gas, power, plasma type, etc.). Cold plasma appears to have limited impact on the sensory and color properties, at lower power and treatment times, but there has been a statistically significant reduction in pH for most of the cold plasma treatments reviewed ( p 0.05). Carbohydrates (cross linking and glycosylation), lipids (oxidation), and proteins (secondary structure) are more significantly impacted due to cold plasma at higher intensities and longer treatment times. Although cold plasma treatments and food matrices can vary considerably, this review has identified the literary evidence of some of the influences and impacts of the vast array of cold plasma treatment parameters on the biomolecular and organoleptic properties of these foods. Due to the rapidly evolving nature of the field, we have also identified that authors prioritize the presentation of different information when publishing from different research areas. Therefore, we have proposed a number of key physical and chemical cold plasma parameters that should be considered for inclusion in all future publications in the field.

Irradiation methods for engineering of graphene related two-dimensional materials

Abstract: The research community has witnessed an exceptional increase in exploring graphene related two-dimensional materials (GR2Ms) in many innovative applications and emerging technologies. However, simple, low-cost, sustainable, and eco-friendly methods to manufacture large quantities and high-quality GR2Ms still remain an unsolved challenge. To address limitations of conventional wet chemical-based exfoliation methods using graphite resources, the top-down irradiation approach has proven to be an ultrafast, effective, and environmentally friendly technology for scalable exfoliation, production, and processing of GR2Ms providing new properties for emerging applications. Significant advancements have been made for preparation of broad range of GR2Ms from graphite, such as graphene, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide, and their doped, functionalized and modified forms over the past two decades, thanks to the availability of photon and ion irradiation techniques, such as microwave, infrared, ultraviolet, solar, x-ray, gamma, laser, and plasma. This review presents recent advances on the application of these various irradiation techniques and highlights their mechanism, differences in properties of prepared GR2Ms, and their advantages and disadvantages in comparison with other conventional methods. The review provides an insight into the irradiation strategies and their prospective applications to produce, at a large scale, low-cost, high-quality GR2Ms for practical applications in transparent electrodes, optoelectronic devices, sensors, supercapacitors, protective coatings, conductive inks, and composites.

Abstract: The environmental crisis, due to the rapid growth of the world population and globalisation, is a serious concern of this century. Nanoscience and nanotechnology play an important role in addressing a wide range of environmental issues with innovative and successful solutions. Identification and control of emerging chemical contaminants have received substantial interest in recent years. As a result, there is a need for reliable and rapid analytical tools capable of performing s le analysis with high sensitivity, broad selectivity, desired stability, and minimal s le handling for the detection, degradation, and removal of hazardous contaminants. In this review, various gold–carbon nanocomposites-based sensors/biosensors that have been developed thus far are explored. The electrochemical platforms, synthesis, erse applications, and effective monitoring of environmental pollutants are investigated comparatively.

Lipase production by solid-state cultivation of thermomyces lanuginosus on by-products from cold-pressing oil production

Abstract: This study shows that by-products obtained after cold-pressing oil production (flex oil cake, hemp oil cake, hull-less pumpkin oil cake) could be used as substrates for the sustainable and cost-effective production of lipase when cultivating Thermomyces lanuginosus under solid-state conditions (T = 45 °C, t = 9 days). Lipase showed optimum activity at T = 40 °C. The produced lipase extract was purified 17.03-folds with a recovery of 1% after gel chromatography. Three different batch experiments were performed in order to test the possibility of using the lipase in biodiesel production. Experiments were performed with a commercial, unpurified enzyme, and partially purified lipase with sunflower oil and methanol as substrates in a batch reactor at 40 °C. During the experiments, the operational stability of the enzyme was studied. The obtained results clearly showed that produced crude and purified lipase can be used for biodiesel production, but the process needs some additional optimization. As for operation stability, it was noticed that the commercial enzyme was deactivated after 30 h, while produced crude enzyme remained 8.25% of its activity after 368 h.

Continuous-Flow Extraction of Adjacent Metals—A Disruptive Economic Window for In Situ Resource Utilization of Asteroids?

Abstract: For the in situ resource utilization (ISRU) of asteroids, the cost-mass conundrum needs to be solved, and technologies may need to be conceptualised from first principals. By using this approach, this Review seeks to illustrate how chemical process intensification can help with the development of disruptive technologies and business matters, how this might influence space-industry start-ups, and even industrial transformations on Earth. The disruptive technology considered is continuous microflow solvent extraction and, as another disruptive element therein, the use of ionic liquids. The space business considered is asteroid mining, as it is probably the most challenging resource site, and the focus is on its last step: the purification of adjacent metals (cobalt versus nickel). The key economic barrier is defined as the reduction in the amount of water used in the asteroid mining process. This Review suggests a pathway toward water savings up to the technological limit of the best Earth-based processes and their physical limits.

Abstract: By using a multispecies fluid model, the tunability and controllability of plasma parameters such as distributions of electron density, electron energy, ion density, and electric field in a microdielectric barrier discharge (DBD) with a charge injector electrode and driven by negatively polarized nanosecond pulsed voltage superimposed on a positive DC bias voltage are investigated. To this end, the effects of changing features of pulsed voltage like pulse rise time (10–20 ns), pulse peak width (10–15 ns), and pulse fall time (20–30 ns) on characteristics of argon plasma formed inside the reactor are studied. The results show that with the increase in pulse width and pulse rise time, the density of electron and ion increases, while fall time change does not significantly affect the plasma parameters. Generally, the results of this study explicitly prove the possibility of controlling plasma formed inside DBD reactors driven by negative pulse voltage combined with a positive DC voltage, which is very important in waste gas conversion applications.

Abstract: Graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) material with a single atomic crystal structure of carbon that has the potential to create next-generation devices for photonic, optoelectronic, thermoelectric, sensing, wearable electronics, etc., owing to its excellent electron mobility, large surface-to-volume ratio, adjustable optics, and high mechanical strength. In contrast, owing to their light-induced conformations, fast response, photochemical stability, and surface-relief structures, azobenzene (AZO) polymers have been used as temperature sensors and photo-switchable molecules and are recognized as excellent candidates for a new generation of light-controllable molecular electronics. They can withstand trans-cis isomerization by conducting light irradiation or heating but have poor photon lifetime and energy density and are prone to agglomeration even at mild doping levels, reducing their optical sensitivity. Graphene derivatives, including graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO), are an excellent platform that, combined with AZO-based polymers, could generate a new type of hybrid structure with interesting properties of ordered molecules. AZO derivatives may modify the energy density, optical responsiveness, and photon storage capacity, potentially preventing aggregation and strengthening the AZO complexes. They are potential candidates for sensors, photocatalysts, photodetectors, photocurrent switching, and other optical applications. This review aimed to provide an overview of the recent progress in graphene-related 2D materials (Gr2MS) and AZO polymer AZO-GO/RGO hybrid structures and their synthesis and applications. The review concludes with remarks based on the findings of this study.
