Abstract: Space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGINs) are key elements for facilitating high-speed seamless connectivity to the devices/users in infrastructure-less environments, where the traditional terrestrial networks are critically infeasible or uneconomical to be fully deployed. This article comprehensively surveys the advanced computing technologies that support the utilization of SAGINs for infrastructure-less environments. The advanced computing technologies refer to the emerging computing techniques, tools, and the processes that can be utilized to support SAGINs in handling the increasing computing tasks. The main contents include: (1) background of SAGINs, (2) typical use cases of SAGINs in infrastructure-less environments, (3) advanced computing technologies to assist SAGINs to meet the requirements of various services in infrastructure-less environments, (4) the related practical initiatives, and (5) the open research challenges and the future research directions.

Abstract: The poor durability of ordinary Portland cement concrete and the corrosion of conventional steel reinforcement have a major impact on the viability, safety and serviceability of reinforced concrete structures, particularly in marine environments. Geopolymer concrete (GPC) reinforced with corrosion-free glass-fibre-reinforced polymer bars is ideal for projects such as bridge piers in coastal zones where corrosion is severe. This paper reports on an examination into the behaviour of this novel construction material under axial, combined and flexural loading and validation of a numerical model of the material. To this end, 11 GPC specimens constructed with various stirrup spacings were subjected to a range of loading conditions. The concrete was modelled using the widely used concrete damage plasticity model and linear elastic behaviour was used for the fibreglass bars and stirrups. The predicted axial load–deflection responses were in close agreement with the experimental data, especially for concentrically loaded columns. The load capacities of eccentrically loaded columns and beams were slightly overpredicted by the model due to a tendency of the fibreglass stirrups to open up prematurely.

Abstract: With the continuous expansion of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and the increasing connectivity among the various intelligent devices or systems, the control of access and fusion in smart factory networks has significantly gained importance. However, the contradiction between the high Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of massive data and the limited network bandwidth and the heterogeneous network is becoming deeper and deeper. The heterogeneity of smart factory networks brings many challenges to unified access and fusion, real-time transmission, and centralized control and management. This article provides a survey on heterogeneous networks in smart factories. We first study and discuss the heterogeneity of smart factory networks, and then discuss the existing mainstream wired and wireless network technologies, as well as promising future technologies, including 5G, OLE for Process Control Unified Architecture (OPC UA), and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). In addition, we also analyze current heterogeneous network fusion architecture and discuss the enabling technologies of heterogeneous network fusion in view of the shortcoming of the current solutions. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of open challenges and future research directions towards the effective realization of the smart factory.

Abstract: The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) as an integrated sensing and communication platform is emerging for surveillance and tracking applications, especially in large infrastructure-deficient environments. In this study, we develop a multi-UAV system to collect data dynamically in a resource-constrained context. The proposed approach consists of an access platform called Access UAV (A_UAV) that stochastically coordinates the data collection from the Inspection-UAVs (I_UAVs) equipped with a visual sensor to relay the same to the cloud. Our approach jointly considers the trajectory optimization of A_UAV and the stability of the data queues at each UAV. In particular, the Distance and Access Latency Aware Trajectory (DLAT) optimization for A_UAVs is developed, which generates a fair access schedule for I_UAVs. Moreover, a Lyapunov-based online optimization ensures the system stability of the average queue backlogs for dynamic data collection while minimizing total system energy. Coordination between I_UAV and A_UAV is achieved through a message-based mechanism. The simulation results validate the performance of our proposed approach against several baselines under different parameter settings.

Abstract: In the manufacturing industry, there are claims about a novel system or paradigm to overcome current data interpretation challenges. Anecdotally, these studies have not been completely practical in real-world applications (e.g., data analytics). This article focuses on smart manufacturing (SM), proposed to address the inconsistencies within manufacturing that are often caused by reasons such as: (i) data realization using a general algorithm, (ii) no accurate methods to overcome the actual inconsistencies using anomaly detection modules, or (iii) real-time availability of insights of the data to change or adapt to the new challenges. A real-world case study on mattress protector manufacturing is used to prove the methods of data mining with the deployment of the isolation forest (IF)-based machine learning (ML) algorithm on a cloud scenario to address the inconsistencies stated above. The novel outcome of these studies was establishing efficient methods to enable efficient data analysis.

Abstract: Children with low‐grade gliomas have excellent long‐term survival outcomes. The development of therapies targeted to the driver mutations along the Mitogen Activated Protein (MAP) kinase signalling pathway are providing long‐term stability for many patients with these tumours. Given the frequency of these tumours residing within or near the suprasellar region, our patients commonly suffer from hormone deficiencies. In Australia, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme currently restricts growth hormone therapy to patients who are not being actively treated for cancer, including those receiving targeted therapies. This viewpoint hopes to facilitate an important discussion amongst our colleagues as to whether this should be changed to allow growth hormone to become available to children on chronic tumour suppressive therapy.
