Abstract: We consider partially directed walks crossing a L × L square weighted according to their length by a fugacity t . The exact solution of this model is computed in three different ways, depending on whether t is less than, equal to or greater than 1. In all cases a complete expression for the dominant asymptotic behaviour of the partition function is calculated. The model admits a dilute to dense phase transition, where for 0 t 1 the partition function scales exponentially in L whereas for t 1 the partition function scales exponentially in L 2 , and when t = 1 there is an intermediate scaling which is exponential in L log L . As such we provide an exact solution of a model of the dilute to dense polymeric phase transition in two dimensions.
Critical scaling of lattice polymers confined to a box without endpoint restriction

Abstract: We study self-avoiding walks on the square lattice restricted to a square box of side L weighted by a length fugacity without restriction of their end points. This is a natural model of a confined polymer in dilute solution such as polymers in mesoscopic pores. The model admits a phase transition between an ‘empty’ phase, where the average length of walks are finite and the density inside large boxes goes to zero, to a ‘dense’ phase, where there is a finite positive density. We prove various bounds on the free energy and develop a scaling theory for the phase transition based on the standard theory for unconstrained polymers. We compare this model to unrestricted walks and walks that whose endpoints are fixed at the opposite corners of a box, as well as Hamiltonian walks. We use Monte Carlo simulations to verify predicted values for three key exponents: the density exponent $$\\alpha =1/2$$ α = 1 / 2 , the finite size crossover exponent $$1/\\nu =4/3$$ 1 / ν = 4 / 3 and the critical partition function exponent $$2-\\eta =43/24$$ 2 - η = 43 / 24 . This implies that the theoretical framework relating them to the unconstrained SAW problem is valid.
The Ability of Ruppia polycarpa to Regenerate from Seed Depends on Seasonal Porewater Salinity Dynamics and Declining Winter Rainfall Could Delay Recruitment

Abstract: For many plants, regeneration from seed is vital for population recovery. Climate change is modifying the global hydrological cycle and a primary factor controlling germination of marine plants: salinity. How altered salinity regimes, and especially altered porewater salinity regimes, will regulate early life history stages of estuarine seagrasses is poorly understood. Here, we quantified the porewater salinity dynamics in two ephemeral estuaries that are dominated by the cosmopolitan genus Ruppia . Seedbank, germlings (germinated seeds) and seedlings were found in salinities ranging from 5 to 110 over an annual cycle. To understand the germination ecology of the dominant species, Ruppia polycarpa , seeds were exposed to treatments simulating current salinity regimes and those predicted under climate change. Seeds underwent a Dormancy treatment (15, 60, 150) followed by a Germination treatment (10, 20, 80). Generally, early life history stages were positively affected by hypersaline dormancy conditions if the subsequent Germination salinity was ≤ 20. Germination success was significantly higher for seeds transferred to 10 (65%) compared to 20 (49%) whilst no seeds germinated in 80 highlighting the risk of lower germination as estuaries become drier and more hypersaline with declining winter rainfall. However, germlings were found in situ in salinities ≥ 80 suggesting aspects of the salinity dynamics, not captured by our experimental conditions, may broaden tolerances. Dormant seeds were continuously present in situ and seedlings were observed throughout the whole of the growing season. These results are indicative of bet-hedging strategies. Future research should explore the capacity of these strategies to afford resilience to R. polycarpa to salinity variability under climate change.

Abstract: The log response ratio, lnRR, is the most frequently used effect size statistic for meta‐analysis in ecology. However, often missing standard deviations (SDs) prevent estimation of the s ling variance of lnRR. We propose new methods to deal with missing SDs via a weighted average coefficient of variation (CV) estimated from studies in the dataset that do report SDs. Across a suite of simulated conditions, we find that using the average CV to estimate s ling variances for all observations, regardless of missingness, performs with minimal bias. Surprisingly, even with missing SDs, this simple method outperforms the conventional approach (basing each effect size on its in idual study‐specific CV) with complete data. This is because the conventional method ultimately yields less precise estimates of the s ling variances than using the pooled CV from multiple studies. Our approach is broadly applicable and can be implemented in all meta‐analyses of lnRR, regardless of ‘missingness’.

Synthesis on the effectiveness of soil translocation for plant community restoration

Abstract: Many degraded ecosystems need active restoration to conserve bio ersity and re‐establish ecosystem function, both highlighted targets of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the proposed EU Nature restoration law. Soil translocation, where both plant propagules and their associated soil biota are co‐introduced, has increasingly been proposed as a powerful restoration technique for terrestrial ecosystems. However, a synthesis of the effectiveness of this method across ecosystems is lacking. To address how soil translocation affects restoration success, we performed a meta‐analysis synthesizing data from 46 field experiments and their respective reference ecosystems in 17 countries across four continents. In each experiment, vegetation composition was recorded in response to soil translocation treatments and the resultant vegetational changes ( ersity and composition) were quantified. We found that soil translocation leads to plant community development further away from the control and more towards the reference plant communities compared with treatments where only plant propagules were introduced. However, the variability of effect sizes among experiments was large, suggesting strong dependence of restoration success on restoration context. We found that restoration success was more likely on loamy soils and when translocation treatments were implemented over larger spatial areas ( m 2 ). Furthermore, we found that restoration success either consistently increased or decreased over time depending on the experiment. Not only is this congruent with positive feedbacks between plant and soil communities driving plant community development, but it also suggests that the composition of the translocated plant and soil communities, and initial starting conditions, are critical for long‐term restoration success. Synthesis and applications . Our analysis highlights soil translocation can be a successful restoration method across a broad range of ecosystems. However, its implementation needs to depend on a thorough evaluation of local conditions and the potential added value. Further refinement of soil translocation techniques is needed to increase success rates.

Abstract: Synthesis of primary ecological data is often assumed to achieve a notion of 'generality', through the quantification of overall effect sizes and consistency among studies, and has become a dominant research approach in ecology. Unfortunately, ecologists rarely define either the generality of their findings, their estimand (the target of estimation) or the population of interest. Given that generality is fundamental to science, and the urgent need for scientific understanding to curb global scale ecological breakdown, loose usage of the term 'generality' is problematic. In other disciplines, generality is defined as comprising both generalizability-extending an inference about an estimand from the s le to the population-and transferability-the validity of estimand predictions in a different s ling unit or population. We review current practice in ecological synthesis and demonstrate that, when researchers fail to define the assumptions underpinning generalizations and transfers of effect sizes, generality often misses its target. We provide guidance for communicating nuanced inferences and maximizing the impact of syntheses both within and beyond academia. We propose pathways to generality applicable to ecological syntheses, including the development of quantitative and qualitative criteria with which to license the transfer of estimands from both primary and synthetic studies.

Abstract: On Our Selection is a series of stories by Steele Rudd, the pen name of Arthur Hoey Davis. The stories portray elements of small ‘selector’ farming in federation-era Australia and represent a significant body of literature originating in or ‘about’ the ‘bush’, the ‘outback’, the ‘never-never’ – unspecific appellations attached to regions of non-urban Australia. The stories detail the Rudd family’s experiences after taking up a ‘selection’ in the Australian bush – the arduous processes of early clearing through to their relative prosperity. ‘Dad Rudd’ has been described as ‘Australia’s Everyman’, and his pugnacious attitude of opposition to the ‘squattocracy’ and the cities resonated with audiences. The sketches, periodicals, radio plays, theatre productions and, eventually, films that continued the Rudd legacy made these stories a significant voice in the creation of Australian national identity – or at least the ‘bush’ identity. However, an attempt to update the representation to the 1970s in a television series was unsuccessful. This article considers the interaction between the legislative creation of ‘selection’ of land and the depictions of life on a selection in the creation of the Australian national identity. It then considers the media and social changes that contextualise the failure of the television series.

Abstract: The stress‐gradient hypothesis (SGH) provides a conceptual framework for explaining how environmental context determines the nature of biotic interactions. It may be also useful for predicting geographic variability in the effect of management interventions on biological invasions. We aimed to test hypotheses consistent with the SGH to explain context dependency in bamboo invasion of secondary forests in Japan, and establish a predictive understanding of forest management impacts on invasion. We use a priori physiological knowledge of invasive giant bamboo, Phyllostachys bambusoides , to generate hypotheses consistent with the SGH. We modelled variation in giant bamboo occupancy within 810 secondary forest plots across the broad environmental gradients of Japan using a national vegetation database. Consistent with the SGH, we find that the effect of tree canopy cover on bamboo occupancy depends on interactions between solar radiation and mean annual temperature. In cool regions with high solar radiation—stressful conditions for bamboo—shade cast by dense canopies facilitates invasion. However, in warmer regions that are more benign, dense canopies tend to inhibit spread via competition for light, space and other resources. Synthesis and applications . We provide evidence that the stress‐gradient hypothesis can inform practical recommendations for invasive species control. We characterised geographic variability in the effect of forest thinning, a widespread management intervention used to enhance forest bio ersity, on the risk of bamboo spread into secondary forests in Japan. Thinning forest canopies to increase understorey light radiation should limit bamboo spread in cooler regions, while tree planting to increase canopy shade should limit bamboo spread in warmer regions.

Abstract: While pulsars possess exceptional rotational stability, large-scale timing studies have revealed at least two distinct types of irregularities in their rotation: red timing noise and glitches. Using modern Bayesian techniques, we investigated the timing noise properties of 300 bright southern-sky radio pulsars that have been observed over 1.0–4.8 yr by the upgraded Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST). We reanalysed the spin and spin-down changes associated with nine previously reported pulsar glitches, report the discovery of three new glitches and four unusual glitch-like events in the rotational evolution of PSR J1825−0935. We develop a refined Bayesian framework for determining how red noise strength scales with pulsar spin frequency (ν) and spin-down frequency ($\dot{\nu }$), which we apply to a s le of 280 non-recycled pulsars. With this new method and a simple power-law scaling relation, we show that red noise strength scales across the non-recycled pulsar population as $\nu ^{a} |\dot{\nu }|^{b}$, where $a = -0.84^{+0.47}_{-0.49}$ and $b = 0.97^{+0.16}_{-0.19}$. This method can be easily adapted to utilize more complex, astrophysically motivated red noise models. Lastly, we highlight our timing of the double neutron star PSR J0737−3039, and the rediscovery of a bright radio pulsar originally found during the first Molonglo pulsar surveys with an incorrectly catalogued position.

Abstract: We present results for the generating functions of single fully-directed walks on the triangular lattice, enumerated according to each type of step and weighted proportional to the area between the walk and the surface of a half-plane (wall), and the number of contacts made with the wall. We also give explicit formulae for total area generating functions, that is when the area is summed over all configurations with a given perimeter, and the generating function of the moments of heights above the wall (the first of which is the total area). These results generalise and summarise nearly all known results on the square lattice: all the square lattice results can be obtaining by setting one of the step weights to zero. Our results also contain as special cases those that already exist for the triangular lattice. In deriving some of the new results we utilise the Enumerating Combinatorial Objects (ECO) and marked area methods of combinatorics for obtaining functional equations in the most general cases. In several cases we give our results both in terms of ratios of infinite q-series and as continued fractions.

The influence of abiotic and biotic conditions on lifecycle stages is critical for estuarine seagrass resilience

Abstract: Abiotic and biotic factors influence seagrass resilience, but the strength and relative importance of the effects are rarely assessed over the complete lifecycle. This study examined the effects of abiotic (salinity, temperature, water depth) and biotic (grazing by black swans) factors on Ruppia spp. over the complete lifecycle. Structures were set up in two estuaries ( – 33.637020, 115.412608) that prevented and allowed natural swan grazing of the seagrasses in May 2019, before the start of the growing season. The density of life stage(s) was measured from June 2019 when germination commenced through to January 2020 when most of the seagrass senesced. Our results showed that swans impacted some but not all life stages. Seedling densities were significantly higher in the plots that allowed natural grazing compared to the exclusion plots (e.g. 697 versus 311 seedlings per m-2), revealing an apparent benefit of swans. Swans removed ≤ 10% of seagrass vegetation but a dormant seedbank was present and new propagules were also observed. We conclude that grazing by swans provides some benefit to seagrass resilience by enhancing seedling recruitment. We further investigated the drivers of the different lifecycle stages using general additive mixed models. Higher and more variable salinity led to increased seed germination whilst temperature explained variation in seedling density and adult plant abundance. Bet-hedging strategies of R. polycarpa were revealed by our lifecycle assessment including the presence of a dormant seedbank, germinated seeds and seedlings over the 8-month study period over variable conditions (salinity 2–42 ppt temperatures 11–28 °C). These strategies may be key determinants of resilience to emerging salinity and temperature regimes from a changing climate.

Abstract: The inherent complexity and multi-causality of nature makes attempts to gain understanding and guidance about critical issues including rates of bio ersity loss, or the effectiveness of actions such as tree planting, wickedly difficult and often subject to poorly-substantiated assertions about their generality. Synthesis of primary ecological data is often assumed to achieve a notion of ‘generality’, through the quantification of overall effect sizes and consistency among studies, and has become a dominant research approach in ecology. Assertions about generality should raise the question: what exactly is generality? Ecologists rarely define either the generality of their findings, their estimand (what is estimated, based on the question of interest) or population of interest. Given that generality is fundamental to the philosophy of science, and the urgent need for scientific understanding and applied conservation actions to curb ecological breakdown, the loose use of the term ‘generality’ is problematic. In other disciplines generality is defined as comprising both generalisability: extending an inference about an estimand from the s le to the population, and transferability: the validity of estimand predictions in a different s ling unit or population. Abstract: We report the detection of FRB20191107B with UTMOST radio telescope at a dispersion measure (DM) of 714.9 pc cm−3. The burst consists of three components, the brightest of which has an intrinsic width of only 11.3 μs and a scattering tail with an exponentially decaying time-scale of 21.4 μs measured at 835 MHz. We model the sensitivity of UTMOST and other major fast radio burst (FRB) surveys to such narrow events. We find that $\\gt 60{{\\ \\rm per\\, cent}}$ of FRBs like FRB20191107B are being missed, and that a significant population of very narrow FRBs probably exists and remains underrepresented in these surveys. The high DM and small scattering time-scale of FRB20191107B allows us to place an upper limit on the strength of turbulence in the intergalactic medium, quantified as scattering measure (SM), of SMIGM & 8.4 × 10−7 kpc m−20/3. Almost all UTMOST FRBs have full phase information due to real-time voltage capture, which provides us with the largest s le of coherently dedispersed single burst FRBs. Our 10.24 μs time resolution data yields accurately measured FRB scattering time-scales. We combine the UTMOST FRBs with 10 FRBs from the literature and find no obvious evidence for a DM-scattering relation, suggesting that IGM is not the dominant source of scattering in FRBs. We support the results of previous studies and identify the local environment of the source in the host galaxy as the most likely region that dominates the observed scattering of our FRBs.

Abstract: Contemporary climate change and biological invasions are two main drivers of bio ersity redistribution. Interactive effects between these drivers have been reported in a variety of studies, yet results are conflicting. Some studies find that contemporary climate change facilitates the spread and success of non‐native species, especially those with broad physiological tolerances. Other studies conclude that non‐natives are vulnerable to current and future changes in climatic conditions. Given that most studies have focused on terrestrial species, here we contribute to this debate by analysing responses of marine native and non‐native fauna and flora to key climate‐related stressors, namely increased temperature (warming) and decreased salinity (freshening). Global. 2002–2019. Marine benthic macrophytes and invertebrates. We conducted a meta‐analysis of experiments investigating the performance (e.g. growth, survival and reproduction) of benthic species in response to warming and freshening. We found that non‐native species tended to respond positively to elevated temperature, whereas the performance of native species declined. Similarly, decreased salinity negatively affected the biological processes of native species, but non‐natives showed neutral or negative overall responses to freshening. We find evidence that non‐native species outperform natives under a wide variety of warming and freshening conditions. The growth and reproduction of non‐natives are enhanced by warmer temperatures, and thus ocean warming is expected to facilitate future spread and success of non‐native species. Increased freshening along future coastal areas, however, will likely have a negative impact in both native and non‐native species and thus is expected to be a driver of significant change in coastal marine ecosystems. Our comprehensive analysis highlighted the need to expand our understanding of climate change effects beyond warming and specifically, studies focusing on salinity changes.
Increased extent of waterfowl grazing lengthens the recovery time of a colonizing seagrass (Halophila ovalis) with implications for seagrass resilience

Abstract: Herbivore distributions and abundance are shifting because of climate change, leading to intensified grazing pressure on foundation species such as seagrasses. This, combined with rapidly increasing magnitudes of change in estuarine ecosystems, may affect seagrass resilience. While the overall resilience of seagrasses is generally well-studied, the timeframes of recovery has received comparatively little attention, particularly in temperate estuaries. We investigated how the recovery time (RT) of seagrass is affected by simulated grazing in a southwestern Australian estuary. Whilst excluding swans, we simulated different grazing intensities (25, 50, 75, and 100% removal from 1 m 2 plots) at four locations in the Swan-Canning Estuary, Western Australia during summer and tracked the recovery of seagrass over 3 months, using seagrass cover as the main measure of recovery. We found that seagrass recovered within 4–6 weeks from the lower grazing intensities (25 and 50%) and 7–19 weeks from the higher grazing intensities (75 and 100%) across the estuary. Increased grazing intensity led to not only longer recovery times (RTs), but also greater variability in the RT among experimental locations. The RT from the higher grazing intensities at one location in particular was more than double other locations. Seagrass recovery was through vegetative mechanisms and not through sexual reproduction. There was a significant grazing treatment effect on seagrass meadow characteristics, particularly belowground biomass which had not recovered 3 months following grazing. As the pressure of climate change on estuarine environments increases, these quantified RTs for seagrass provide a baseline for understanding grazing pressure as a singular disturbance. Future work can now examine how grazing and other potentially interacting pressures in our changing climate could impact seagrass recovery even further.
A magnetar parallax

Abstract: XTE J1810−197 (J1810) was the first magnetar identified to emit radio pulses, and has been extensively studied during a radio-bright phase in 2003–2008. It is estimated to be relatively nearby compared to other Galactic magnetars, and provides a useful prototype for the physics of high magnetic fields, magnetar velocities, and the plausible connection to extragalactic fast radio bursts. Upon the rebrightening of the magnetar at radio wavelengths in late 2018, we resumed an astrometric c aign on J1810 with the Very Long Baseline Array, and s led 14 new positions of J1810 over 1.3 yr. The phase calibration for the new observations was performed with two-phase calibrators that are quasi-colinear on the sky with J1810, enabling substantial improvement of the resultant astrometric precision. Combining our new observations with two archival observations from 2006, we have refined the proper motion and reference position of the magnetar and have measured its annual geometric parallax, the first such measurement for a magnetar. The parallax of 0.40 ± 0.05 mas corresponds to a most probable distance $2.5^{\\, +0.4}_{\\, -0.3}$ kpc for J1810. Our new astrometric results confirm an unremarkable transverse peculiar velocity of ≈200 $\\rm km~s^{-1}$ for J1810, which is only at the average level among the pulsar population. The magnetar proper motion vector points back to the central region of a supernova remnant (SNR) at a compatible distance at ≈70 kyr ago, but a direct association is disfavoured by the estimated SNR age of ∼3 kyr.

Abstract: Ecologists routinely use statistical models to detect and explain interactions among ecological drivers, with a goal to evaluate whether an effect of interest changes in sign or magnitude in different contexts. Two fundamental properties of interactions are often overlooked during the process of hypothesising, visualising and interpreting interactions between drivers: the measurement scale – whether a response is analysed on an additive or multiplicative scale, such as a ratio or logarithmic scale and the symmetry – whether dependencies are considered in both directions. Overlooking these properties can lead to one or more of three inferential errors: misinterpretation of ( i ) the detection and magnitude (Type‐D error), and ( ii ) the sign of effect modification (Type‐S error) and ( iii ) misidentification of the underlying processes (Type‐A error). We illustrate each of these errors with a broad range of ecological questions applied to empirical and simulated data sets. We demonstrate how meta‐analysis, a widely used approach that seeks explicitly to characterise context dependence, is especially prone to all three errors. Based on these insights, we propose guidelines to improve hypothesis generation, testing, visualisation and interpretation of interactions in ecology.

Abstract: Monte Carlo simulations, using the PERM algorithm, of interacting self-avoiding walks (ISAW) and interacting self-avoiding trails (ISAT) in five dimensions are presented which locate the collapse phase transition in those models. It is argued that the appearance of a transition (at least) as strong as a pseudo-first-order transition occurs in both models. The values of various theoretically-conjectured dimension-dependent exponents are shown to be consistent with the data obtained. Indeed the first-order nature of the transition is even stronger in five dimensions than four. The agreement with the theory is better for ISAW than ISAT and it cannot be ruled out that ISAT have a true first-order transition in dimension five. This latter difference would be intriguing if true. On the other hand, since simulations are more difficult for ISAT than ISAW at this transition in high dimensions, any discrepancy may well be due to the inability of the simulations to reach the true asymptotic regime.

The UTMOST survey for magnetars, intermittent pulsars, RRATs, and FRBs – I. System description and overview

Abstract: We describe the ongoing ‘survey for magnetars, intermittent pulsars, rotating radio transients, and fast radio bursts’ (SMIRF), performed using the newly refurbished UTMOST telescope. SMIRF repeatedly sweeps the southern Galactic plane performing real-time periodicity and single pulse searches, and is the first survey of its kind carried out with an interferometer. SMIRF is facilitated by a robotic scheduler which is capable of fully autonomous commensal operations. We report on the SMIRF observational parameters, the data analysis methods, the survey’s sensitivity to pulsars, techniques to mitigate radio frequency interference, and present some early survey results. UTMOST’s wide field of view permits a full sweep of the Galactic plane to be performed every fortnight, two orders of magnitude faster than previous surveys. In six months of operations from 2018 January to June, we have performed ∼10 sweeps of the Galactic plane with SMIRF. Notable blind redetections include the magnetar PSR J1622−4950, the RRAT PSR J0941−3942 and the eclipsing pulsar PSR J1748−2446A. We also report the discovery of a new pulsar, PSR J1659−54. Our follow-up of this pulsar at an average flux limit of ≤20 mJy, categorizes this as an intermittent pulsar with a high nulling fraction of & .002.

Abstract: The use of functional information in the form of species traits plays an important role in explaining bio ersity patterns and responses to environmental changes. Although relationships between species composition, their traits, and the environment have been extensively studied on a case-by-case basis, results are variable, and it remains unclear how generalizable these relationships are across ecosystems, taxa and spatial scales. To address this gap, we collated 80 datasets from trait-based studies into a global database for metaCommunity Ecology: Species, Traits, Environment and Space “CESTES”. Each dataset includes four matrices: species community abundances or presences/absences across multiple sites, species trait information, environmental variables and spatial coordinates of the s ling sites. The CESTES database is a live database: it will be maintained and expanded in the future as new datasets become available. By its harmonized structure, and the ersity of ecosystem types, taxonomic groups, and spatial scales it covers, the CESTES database provides an important opportunity for synthetic trait-based research in community ecology.

Population‐specific resilience of Halophila ovalis seagrass habitat to unseasonal rainfall, an extreme climate event in estuaries

Abstract: Extreme climate events are predicted to alter estuarine salinity gradients exposing habitat‐forming species to more frequent salinity variations. The intensity and duration of these variations, rather than the mean salinity values ecosystems are exposed to, may be more important in influencing resilience but requires further investigation. Precipitation, including the frequency, intensity and timing of occurrence, is shifting due to climate change. A global analysis on the timing of rainfall in estuarine catchments was conducted. In 80% of the case studies, the maximum daily rainfall occurred in the dry season at least once over the 40‐year period and could be classified as an extreme event. We selected an estuary in southwestern Australia and investigated the effects of an extreme rainfall event in 2017 resulting in an excess discharge of freshwater on seagrass Halophila ovalis . Adapting an approach applied for marine heatwaves using salinity data, we quantified metrics and characterised the event along the estuarine gradient. We assessed seagrass resilience by calculating resistance times based on the comparisons of biomass and leaf density data prior to, and during the event, and recovery times through assessment against historical condition. Where salinity is historically more variable, reductions in biomass were lower (higher resistance via plasticity in salinity tolerance) and meadows recovered within 9–11 months. Where salinity is historically more stable, loss of biomass was greatest (low resistance) post‐event and recovery may exceed 22 months, and potentially due to the rapid decline in salinity (−3 PSU/day). As estuaries become more hydrologically variable, these metrics provide a baseline for retrospective and future comparisons. Our results suggest seagrass resilience to hyposalinity is population specific. This understanding enables more accurate predictions about ecological responses to climate change and identifies which populations may ‘future proof’ ecosystem resilience. Synthesis . Following an extreme rainfall event, we found seagrass populations that are exposed to variable salinities recovered while those from a stable salinity environment were unable to recover within the study time frame. These findings expand upon existing evidence, derived primarily from other ecosystems, that show new sources of resilience may be uncovered by accounting for between‐population variation.

Abstract: We have studied self-avoiding walks contained within an L × L square whose end-points can lie anywhere within, or on, the boundaries of the square. We prove that such walks behave, asymptotically, as walks crossing a square (WCAS), being those walks whose end-points lie at the south-east and north-west corners of the square. We provide numerical data, enumerating all such walks, and analyse the sequence of coefficients in order to estimate the asymptotic behaviour. We also studied a subset of these walks, those that must contain at least one edge on all four boundaries of the square. We provide compelling evidence that these two classes of walks grow identically. From our analysis we conjecture that the number of such walks C L , for both problems, behaves as C L ∼ λ L 2 + b L + c ⋅ L g , where (Guttmann and Jensen 2022 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. ) λ = 1.744 5498 ± 0.000 0012, b = −0.043 54 ± 0.0005, c = −1.35 ± 0.45, and g = 3.9 ± 0.1. Finally, we also studied the equivalent problem for self-avoiding polygons, also known as cycles in a square grid. The asymptotic behaviour of cycles has the same form as walks, but with different values of the parameters c , and g . Our numerical analysis shows that λ and b have the same values as for WCAS and that c = 1.776 ± 0.002 while g = −0.500 ± 0.005 and hence probably equals − 1 2 .

Abstract: Dedicated surveys using different detection pipelines are being carried out at multiple observatories to find more fast radio bursts (FRBs). Understanding the efficiency of detection algorithms and the survey completeness function is important to enable unbiased estimation of the underlying FRB population properties. One method to achieve end-to-end testing of the system is by injecting mock FRBs in the live data stream and searching for them blindly. Mock FRB injection is particularly effective for machine-learning-based classifiers, for which analytic characterization is impractical. We describe a first-of-its-kind implementation of a real-time mock FRB injection system at the upgraded Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (UTMOST) and present our results for a set of 20 000 mock FRB injections. The injections have yielded clear insight into the detection efficiencies and have provided a survey completeness function for pulse width, fluence, and dispersion measure (DM). Mock FRBs are recovered with uniform efficiency over the full range of injected DMs however, the recovery fraction is found to be a strong function of the width and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). For low widths (≲20 ms) and high SNR (≳9) the recovery is highly effective with recovery fractions exceeding 90 per cent. We find that the presence of radio-frequency interference causes the recovered SNR values to be systematically lower by up to 20 per cent compared to the injected values. We find that wider FRBs become increasingly hard to recover for the machine-learning-based classifier employed at UTMOST. We encourage other observatories to implement live injection set-ups for similar testing of their surveys.

Abstract: One of the consequences of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an increased risk of early development of cardiovascular diseases. Pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) is a new potential marker of endothelial dysfunction. The aim of the study was to assess PTX3 and other markers of endothelial dysfunction in PCOS women. The study enrolled 99 stable body mass PCOS women (17 normal weight, 21 overweight and 61 obese). Anthropometric measurements and serum lasma levels of glucose, insulin, lipids, estradiol, testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin, 17-OH progesterone, free androgen index, pentraxin-3 (PTX3), soluble intercellular (sICAM-1) and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (sVCAM-1), endothelin-1 and total nitric oxide metabolites (tNO) concentrations were assessed. Groups were ided into tercile-subgroups according to PTX3 serum levels. Serum PTX3 tercile-subgroups significantly differed in respect to tNO, endothelin-1 and sVCAM-1, but not sICAM-1. Abstract: We analyse a directed lattice vesicle model incorporating both the binding-unbinding transition and the vesicle inflation-deflation transition. While many efforts have been devoted to this issue, in the absence of a chemical/electrochemical potential the open‐shell character is generally lost in contact with the metallic electrodes. Herein, single‐molecule devices incorporating a 6‐oxo‐verdazyl persistent radical have been fabricated using break‐junction techniques. The open‐shell character is retained at room temperature, and electrochemical gating permits in situ reduction to a closed‐shell anionic state in a single‐molecule transistor configuration. Furthermore, electronically driven rectification arises from bias‐dependent alignment of the open‐shell resonances. The integration of radical character, transistor‐like switching, and rectification in a single molecular component paves the way to further studies of the electronic, magnetic, and thermoelectric properties of open‐shell species.

A broadband radio view of transient jet ejecta in the black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1535–571

Abstract: We present a broadband radio study of the transient jets ejected from the black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1535–571, which underwent a prolonged outburst beginning on 2017 September 2. We monitored MAXI J1535–571 with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) at frequencies from 119 to 186 MHz over six epochs from 2017 September 20 to 2017 October 14. The source was quasi-simultaneously observed over the frequency range 0.84–19 GHz by UTMOST (the Upgraded Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope) the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA). Using the LBA observations from 2017 September 23, we measured the source size to be $34\\pm1$ mas. During the brightest radio flare on 2017 September 21, the source was detected down to 119 MHz by the MWA, and the radio spectrum indicates a turnover between 250 and 500 MHz, which is most likely due to synchrotron self-absorption (SSA). By fitting the radio spectrum with a SSA model and using the LBA size measurement, we determined various physical parameters of the jet knot (identified in ATCA data), including the jet opening angle ( $\\phi_{\\rm op} = 4.5\\pm1.2^{\\circ}$ ) and the magnetic field strength ( $B_{\\rm s} = 104^{+80}_{-78}$ mG). Our fitted magnetic field strength agrees reasonably well with that inferred from the standard equipartition approach, suggesting the jet knot to be close to equipartition. Our study highlights the capabilities of the Australian suite of radio telescopes to jointly probe radio jets in black hole X-ray binaries via simultaneous observations over a broad frequency range, and with differing angular resolutions. This suite allows us to determine the physical properties of X-ray binary jets. Finally, our study emphasises the potential contributions that can be made by the low-frequency part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA-Low) in the study of black hole X-ray binaries.
Four-dimensional polymer collapse: Pseudo-first-order transition in interacting self-avoiding walks

Abstract: In an earlier work we provided the first evidence that the collapse, or coil-globule transition of an isolated polymer in solution can be seen in a four-dimensional model. Here we investigate, via Monte Carlo simulations, the canonical lattice model of polymer collapse, namely, interacting self-avoiding walks, to show that it not only has a distinct collapse transition at finite temperature but that for any finite polymer length this collapse has many characteristics of a rounded first-order phase transition. However, we also show that there exists a "straight theta point" where the polymer behaves in a simple Gaussian manner (which is a critical state), to which these finite-size transition temperatures approach as the polymer length is increased. The resolution of these seemingly incompatible conclusions involves the argument that the first-order-like rounded transition is scaled away in the thermodynamic limit to leave a mean-field second-order transition. Essentially this happens because the finite-size shift of the transition is asymptotically much larger than the width of the pseudotransition and the latent heat decays to zero (algebraically) with polymer length. This scenario can be inferred from the application of the theory of Lifshitz, Grosberg, and Khokhlov (based upon the framework of Lifshitz) to four dimensions: the conclusions of which were written down some time ago by Khokhlov. In fact it is precisely above the upper critical dimension, which is 3 for this problem, that the theory of Lifshitz may be quantitatively applicable to polymer collapse.

Abstract: The set of random walks with different step sets (of short steps) in the quarter plane has provided a rich set of models that have profoundly different integrability properties. In particular, 23 of the 79 effectively different models can be shown to have generating functions that are algebraic or differentiably finite. Here we investigate how this integrability may change in those 23 models where in addition to length one also counts the number of sites of the walk touching either the horizontal and/or vertical boundaries of the quarter plane. This is equivalent to introducing interactions with those boundaries in a statistical mechanical context. We are able to solve for the generating function in a number of cases. For ex le, when counting the total number of boundary sites without differentiating whether they are horizontal or vertical, we can solve the generating function of a generalised Kreweras model. However, in many instances we are not able to solve as the kernel methodology seems to break down when including counts with the boundaries.

Abstract: Meta-analysis is a quantitative way of synthesizing results from multiple studies to obtain reliable evidence of an intervention or phenomenon. Indeed, an increasing number of meta-analyses are conducted in environmental sciences, and resulting meta-analytic evidence is often used in environmental policies and decision-making. We conducted a survey of recent meta-analyses in environmental sciences and found poor standards of current meta-analytic practice and reporting. For ex le, only ~ 40% of the 73 reviewed meta-analyses reported heterogeneity (variation among effect sizes beyond s ling error), and publication bias was assessed in fewer than half. Furthermore, although almost all the meta-analyses had multiple effect sizes originating from the same studies, non-independence among effect sizes was considered in only half of the meta-analyses. To improve the implementation of meta-analysis in environmental sciences, we here outline practical guidance for conducting a meta-analysis in environmental sciences. We describe the key concepts of effect size and meta-analysis and detail procedures for fitting multilevel meta-analysis and meta-regression models and performing associated publication bias tests. We demonstrate a clear need for environmental scientists to embrace multilevel meta-analytic models, which explicitly model dependence among effect sizes, rather than the commonly used random-effects models. Further, we discuss how reporting and visual presentations of meta-analytic results can be much improved by following reporting guidelines such as PRISMA-EcoEvo (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Ecology and Evolutionary Biology). This paper, along with the accompanying online tutorial, serves as a practical guide on conducting a complete set of meta-analytic procedures (i.e., meta-analysis, heterogeneity quantification, meta-regression, publication bias tests and sensitivity analysis) and also as a gateway to more advanced, yet appropriate, methods.
