DEM Study on the Segregation of a Non-Spherical Intruder in a Vibrated Granular Bed

Abstract: The segregation process of a single large intruder in a vibrated bed of small particles has been widely studied, but most previous studies focused on spherical intruders. In this work, the discrete element method was used to study the effects of vibration conditions and intruder shape on the dimensionless ascending velocity (va) of the intruder. The intruder was in a prolate shape with aspect ratio varied but its equivalent diameter fixed. Three equivalent diameters, namely volume-equivalent diameter, surface-area-equivalent diameter, and Sauter diameter, were used. It was found that va increases and then decreases with the rise of the dimensionless vibration litude (Ad) and the dimensionless vibration frequency (fd), and va increases with the decrease of the sphericity of the intruder (Φ). Moreover, the porosity variation in the vibrated bed and the granular temperature were analyzed, which can be linked to the change of va. It was further found that va can be uniformly correlated to Ad·fd0.5, while the critical change of the response of va to Ad and fd occurs at Γ = 4.83, where Γ is the vibration intensity. Based on these findings, a piecewise equation was proposed to predict va as a function of Ad, fd, and Φ.

Abstract: Interactions between nanoparticles is one of the key factors governing their assembly for ordered structures. Understanding such interactions between non-spherical nanoparticles and developing a quantitative force model are critical to achieving the ordered structures for various applications. In the present study, the non-contact interactions of two identical gold nanorods (AuNRs) with different aspect ratios have been studied by molecular dynamics simulation. A new interaction potential and force model for two nanorods approaching side-by-side has been proposed as a function of particle surface separation and their relative orientation. In addition, the interaction potentials of two nanorods approaching in other typical orientation configurations (i.e., crossed, head-to-head and head-to-side) have also been investigated.

Abstract: Understanding transportation and deposition (TD) of aerosol particles in the human respiratory system can help clinical treatment of lung diseases using medicines. The lung airway diameters and the breathing capacity of human lungs normally increase with age until the age of 30. Many studies have analyzed the particle TD in the human lung airways. However, the knowledge of the nanoparticle TD in airways of infants and children with varying inhalation flow rates is still limited in the literature. This study investigates nanoparticle (5 nm ≤ dp ≤ 500 nm) TD in the lungs of infants, children, and adults. The inhalation air flow rates corresponding to three ages are considered as Qin=3.22 L/min (infant), 8.09 L/min (Child), and Qin=14 L/min (adult). It is found that less particles are deposited in upper lung airways (G0–G3) than in lower airways (G12–G15) in the lungs of all the three age groups. The results suggest that the particle deposition efficiency in lung airways increases with the decrease of particle size due to the Brownian diffusion mechanism. About 3% of 500 nm particles are deposited in airways G12–G15 for the three age groups. As the particle size is decreased to 5 nm, the deposition rate in G12–G15 is increased to over 95%. The present findings can help medical therapy by in idually simulating the distribution of drug-aerosol for the patient-specific lung.
