Abstract: The viability of lithium-sulfur batteries as an energy storage technology depends on unlocking long-term cycle stability. Most instability stems from the release and transport of polysulfides from the cathode, which causes mossy growth on the lithium anode, leading to continuous consumption of electrolyte. Therefore, development of a durable cathode with minimal polysulfide escape is critical. Here, we present a saccharide-based binder system that has a capacity for the regulation of polysulfides due to its reducing properties. Furthermore, the binder promotes the formation of viscoelastic filaments during casting which endows the sulfur cathode with a desirable web-like microstructure. Taken together this leads to 97% sulfur utilisation with a cycle life of 1000 cycles (9 months) and capacity retention (around 700 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles). A pouch cell prototype with a specific energy of up to 206 Wh kg −1 is produced, demonstrating the promising potential for practical applications.

Abstract: Molecular simulation techniques have revealed that the incorporation of fullerenes within porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) remarkably enhances methanol uptake while inhibiting water uptake. The highest selectivity of methanol over water is found to be 1540 at low pressure (1 kPa) and decreases gradually with increasing pressure. The adsorption of water is very small compared to methanol, a useful material property for membrane and adsorbent-based separations. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations are utilized to calculate the pure component and mixture adsorption isotherms. The water and methanol mixture simulations show that water uptake is further inhibited above the pure component results because of the dominant methanol adsorption. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations confirm that water diffusivity is also inhibited by strong methanol adsorption in the mixture. Overall, this study reveals profound hydrophobicity in C60@PAF materials and recommends C60@PAFs as suitable applicants for adsorbent and membrane-based separations of methanol/water mixtures and other alcohol/water separation applications.

Abstract: A monoclinic periodic mesoporous Li(x)(Mn(1/3)Ni(1/3)Co(1/3))O(2) spinel has been successfully prepared for the first time using a 'two solvents' pore infiltration methodology on hard silica templates. Hydrogen storage materials for mobile and stationary applications: Current state of the art

Abstract: One of the limitations to the widespread use of hydrogen as an energy carrier is its storage in a safe and compact form. Herein, recent developments in effective high-capacity hydrogen storage materials are reviewed, with a special emphasis on light compounds, including those based on organic porous structures, boron, nitrogen, and aluminum. These elements and their related compounds hold the promise of high, reversible, and practical hydrogen storage capacity for mobile applications, including vehicles and portable power equipment, but also for the large scale and distributed storage of energy for stationary applications. Current understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the interaction of hydrogen with these light compounds is summarized, as well as basic strategies to meet practical targets of hydrogen uptake and release. The limitation of these strategies and current understanding is also discussed and new directions proposed.
Sulfur Cathodes with Self‐Organized Cellulose Nanofibers in Stable Ah‐Level, >300 Wh kg−1 Lithium–Sulfur Cells

Abstract: The realization of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries as an energy storage technology depends on unlocking practical performance at commercially relevant pouch cell scales. Typically, the heterogeneous and porous nature of large scale, high sulfur loading Li–S batteries require increased electrolyte levels and impede electronic conductivity. Improved cathode structures offer a pathway to strong performance at large battery scales. Here, the successful development of a new cathode using highly‐carboxylated and negatively surface charged cellulose nanofibers as a backbone that addresses these issues and delivers an ordered, dense architecture whilst maintaining long term cycle life, is reported. Taken together this leads to an Ah‐level pouch cell with a peak capacity above 1200 mAh g −1 and an areal capacity of around 15 mAh cm −2 , which achieves a high gravimetric energy density of up to 330 Wh kg −1 and volumetric energy density of 480 Wh L −1 . The cell is used to power a drone for 10 min, demonstrating the ability of this discovery to be translated at practical scales.

Abstract: A microporous metal-organic framework [Cu(3)(ipO)(2)(pyz)(2)](n), (ipO = 2-hydroxyisophthalic acid, pyz = pyrazine) was synthesized via an in situ. ligand transformation reaction. The microporous framework displays helical arrays of ipo ligands holding the Cu atoms in 2D sheets, whilst the coordination of pyz molecules acts to arrange these sheets into a microporous 3D structure. Remarkable selective sorption behaviour (>5) for H(2) over N(2) is observed and explained with molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract: The metal-organic framework beryllium benzene tribenzoate (Be-BTB) has recently been reported to have one of the highest gravimetric hydrogen uptakes at room temperature. Storage at room temperature is one of the key requirements for the practical viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles. Be-BTB has an exceptional 298 K storage capacity of 2.3 wt % hydrogen. This result is surprising given that the low adsorption enthalpy of 5.5 kJ mol(-1). In this work, a combination of atomistic simulation and continuum modeling reveals that the beryllium rings contribute strongly to the hydrogen interaction with the framework. These simulations are extended with a thermodynamic energy optimization (TEO) model to compare the performance of Be-BTB to a compressed H2 tank and benchmark materials MOF-5 and MOF-177 in a MOF-based fuel cell. Our investigation shows that none of the MOF-filled tanks satisfy the United States Department of Energy (DOE) storage targets within the required operating temperatures and pressures. However, the Be-BTB tank delivers the most energy per volume and mass compared to the other material-based storage tanks. The pore size and the framework mass are shown to be contributing factors responsible for the superior room temperature hydrogen adsorption of Be-BTB.

Abstract: Engineering different two-dimensional materials into heterostructured membranes with unique physiochemical properties and molecular sieving channels offers an effective way to design membranes for fast and selective gas molecule transport. Here we develop a simple and versatile pyro-layering approach to fabricate heterostructured membranes from boron nitride nanosheets as the main scaffold and graphene nanosheets derived from a chitosan precursor as the filler. The rearrangement of the graphene nanosheets adjoining the boron nitride nanosheets during the pyro-layering treatment forms precise in-plane slit-like nanochannels and a plane-to-plane spacing of ~3.0 Å, thereby endowing specific gas transport pathways for selective hydrogen transport. The heterostructured membrane shows a high H 2 permeability of 849 Barrer, with a H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 290. This facile and scalable technique holds great promise for the fabrication of heterostructures as next-generation membranes for enhancing the efficiency of gas separation and purification processes.
Top-down patterning of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework composite thin films by deep X-ray lithography

Abstract: G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) are one of the most important targets for therapeutics due to their abundance and ersity. The G protein-coupled receptor for thrombin can transactivate protein tyrosine kinase receptors (PTKR) and we have recently established that it can also transactivate serine/threonine kinase receptors (S/TKR). A comprehensive knowledge of the signalling pathways that GPCR transactivation elicits is necessary to fully understand the implications of both GPCR activation and the impact of target drugs. Here, we demonstrate that thrombin elicits dual transactivation-dependent signalling pathways to stimulate mRNA expression of glycosaminoglycan synthesizing enzymes chondroitin 4-O-sulfotransferase 1 and chondroitin sulfate synthase 1. The PTKR mediated response involves matrix metalloproteinases and the phosphorylation of the MAP kinase Erk. The S/TKR mediated response differs markedly and involves the phosphorylation of Smad2 carboxy terminal serine residues and does not involve matrix metalloproteinases. This work shows that all of the thrombin mediated signalling to glycosaminoglycan synthesizing enzyme gene expression occurs via transactivation-dependent pathways and does not involve transactivation-independent signalling. These findings highlight the complexity of thrombin-mediated transactivation signalling and the broader implications of GPCR targeted therapeutics.
Hypercrosslinked additives for ageless gas-separation membranes

Abstract: The loss of internal pores, a process known as physical aging, inhibits the long-term use of the most promising gas-separation polymers. Previously we reported that a porous aromatic framework (PAF-1) could form a remarkable nanocomposite with gas-separation polymers to stop aging. However, PAF-1 synthesis is very onerous both from a reagent and reaction-condition perspective, making it difficult to scale-up. We now reveal a highly dispersible and scalable additive based on α,α'-dichloro-p-xylene (p-DCX), that inhibits aging more effectively, and crucially almost doubles gas-transport selectivity. These synergistic effects are related to the intimately mixed nanocomposite that is formed though the high dispersibility of p-DCX in the gas-separation polymer. This reduces particle-size effects and the internal free volume is almost unchanged over time. This study shows this inexpensive and scalable polymer additive delivers exceptional gas-transport performance and selectivity.
A simple route to full structural analysis of biophosphates and their application to materials discovery

Abstract: An integrated suite of synthesis and characterisation techniques that includes synchrotron-based single crystal, powder X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance and electron diffraction have been employed to uncover two new distinct structures in the Ca(x)Ba(2-x)P(2)O(7) polymorphic phosphate system. These materials have particular relevance for their application as both biomaterials and phosphors. Calcium barium pyrophosphate, CaBaP(2)O(7), was shown by a combination of spectroscopic and diffraction techniques to have two polymorphs distinct in structure from all of the five previously reported polymorphs of Ca, Sr and Ba pyrophosphate. A high temperature polymorph HT-CaBaP(2)O(7) prepared at 1200 °C is orthorhombic, of space group P(212121) with a = 13.0494 Å, b = 8.9677 Å, c = 5.5444 Å. A low temperature polymorph LT-CaBaP(2)O(7), prepared below 1000 °C, is monoclinic with space group P2(1)/c and dimensions a = 12.065 Å, b = 10.582 Å, c = 9.515 Å, β = 94.609°.

Organic Microporous Nanofillers with Unique Alcohol Affinity for Superior Ethanol Recovery toward Sustainable Biofuels

Abstract: To minimize energy consumption and carbon footprints, pervaporation membranes are fast becoming the preferred technology for alcohol recovery. However, this approach is confined to small-scale operations, as the flux of standard rubbery polymer membranes remain insufficient to process large solvent volumes, whereas membrane separations that use glassy polymer membranes are prone to physical aging. This study concerns how the alcohol affinity and intrinsic porosity of networked, organic, microporous polymers can simultaneously reduce physical aging and drastically enhance both flux and selectivity of a super glassy polymer, poly-[1-(trimethylsilyl)propyne] (PTMSP). Slight loss in alcohol transportation channels in PTMSP is compensated by the alcohol affinity of the microporous polymers. Even after continuous exposure to aqueous solutions of alcohols, PTMSP pervaporation membranes loaded with the microporous polymers outperform the state-of-the-art and commercial pervaporation membranes.

Solvation Effects on the Permeation and Aging Performance of PIM-1-Based MMMs for Gas Separation.

Abstract: Membranes are particularly attractive for lowering the energy intensity of separations as they eliminate phase changes. While many tantalizing polymers are known, limitations in selectivity and stability slightly preclude further development. Mixed-matrix membranes may address these shortcomings. Key to their realization is the intimate mixing between the polymer and the additive to eliminate nonselective transport, improve selectivity, and resist physical aging. Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) have inherently promising gas transport properties. Here, we show that porous additives can improve transport and resist aging in PIM-1. We develop a simple, low-cost, and scalable hyper-cross-linked polymer (poly-dichloroxylene, pDCX), which was hydroxylated to form an intimate mixture with the polar PIM-1. Solvent variation allowed control of physical aging rates and improved selectivity for smaller gases. This detailed study has allowed many interactions within mixed matrix membranes to be directly elucidated and presents a practical means to stabilize porous polymers for separation applications.

Abstract: CO2 uptake in zirconium MOF UiO-66 almost doubles with post-synthetic exchange of Zr by Ti. This was due to smaller pore size and higher adsorption enthalpy, with good complementarity between experiment and simulation. Furthermore, the full effect is obtained with ~50% Ti loading, precluding the need to fully substitute frameworks for CO2 capture.

Highly-Efficient Sulfonated UiO-66(Zr) Optical Fiber for Rapid Detection of Trace Levels of Pb2+

Abstract: Lead detection for biological environments, aqueous resources, and medicinal compounds, rely mainly on either utilizing bulky lab equipment such as ICP-OES or ready-made sensors, which are based on colorimetry with some limitations including selectivity and low interference. Remote, rapid and efficient detection of heavy metals in aqueous solutions at ppm and sub-ppm levels have faced significant challenges that requires novel compounds with such ability. Here, a UiO-66(Zr) metal-organic framework (MOF) functionalized with SO3H group (SO3H-UiO-66(Zr)) is deposited on the end-face of an optical fiber to detect lead cations (Pb2+) in water at 25.2, 43.5 and 64.0 ppm levels. The SO3H-UiO-66(Zr) system provides a Fabry–Perot sensor by which the lead ions are detected rapidly (milliseconds) at 25.2 ppm aqueous solution reflecting in the wavelength shifts in interference spectrum. The proposed removal mechanism is based on the adsorption of [Pb(OH2)6]2+ in water on SO3H-UiO-66(Zr) due to a strong affinity between functionalized MOF and lead. This is the first work that advances a multi-purpose optical fiber-coated functional MOF as an on-site remote chemical sensor for rapid detection of lead cations at extremely low concentrations in an aqueous system.

Abstract: Groundbreaking research over the past 15 years has established metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbents capable of unprecedented gas adsorption capacity. This has encouraged the contemplation of their use in applications such as increasing the storage capacity in natural gas fuel tanks, or the capture of carbon dioxide from coal-fired flue gas streams. However, while the gas adsorption capacity of MOFs is large, not all stored gas can be readily released to realize the efficient regeneration of MOF adsorbents. This leads to an increase in energy requirements, or working capacities significantly lower than the amount of gas adsorbed. This requirement for low energy means to efficiently release more stored gas has motivated the research in our group toward the triggered release of the stored gas from MOFs. Using CO
Metal-organic frameworks impregnated with magnesium-decorated fullerenes for methane and hydrogen storage

Abstract: A new concept is described for methane and hydrogen storage materials involving the incorporation of magnesium-decorated fullerenes within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The system is modeled using a novel approach underpinned by surface potential energies developed from Lennard-Jones parameters. Impregnation of MOF pores with magnesium-decorated Mg(10)C(60) fullerenes, denoted as Mg-C(60)@MOF, places exposed metal sites with high heats of gas adsorption into intimate contact with large surface area MOF structures. Perhaps surprisingly, given the void space occupied by C(60), this impregnation delivers remarkable gas uptake, according to our modeling, which predicts exceptional performance for the Mg-C(60)@MOF family of materials. These predictions include a volumetric methane uptake of 265 v/v, the highest reported value for any material, which significantly exceeds the U.S. Department of Energy target of 180 v/v. We also predict a very high hydrogen adsorption enthalpy of 11 kJ mol(-1) with relatively little decrease as a function of H(2) filling. This value is close to the calculated optimum value of 15.1 kJ mol(-1) and is achieved concurrently with saturation hydrogen uptake in large amounts at pressures under 10 atm.

Gas-separation membranes loaded with porous aromatic frameworks that improve with age

Abstract: Porosity loss, also known as physical aging, in glassy polymers h ers their long term use in gas separations. Unprecedented interactions of porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with these polymers offer the potential to control and exploit physical aging for drastically enhanced separation efficiency. PAF-1 is used in the archetypal polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM), PIM-1, to achieve three significant outcomes. 1) hydrogen permeability is drastically enhanced by 375% to 5500 Barrer. 2) Physical aging is controlled causing the selectivity for H2 over N2 to increase from 4.5 to 13 over 400 days of aging. 3) The improvement with age of the membrane is exploited to recover up to 98% of H2 from gas mixtures with N2 . This process is critical for the use of ammonia as a H2 storage medium. The tethering of polymer side chains within PAF-1 pores is responsible for maintaining H2 transport pathways, whilst the larger N2 pathways gradually collapse.

A Robust Metal–Organic Framework for Dynamic Light-Induced Swing Adsorption of Carbon Dioxide

Abstract: Adsorbents for CO2 capture need to demonstrate efficient release. Light-induced swing adsorption (LISA) is an attractive new method to release captured CO2 that utilizes solar energy rather than electricity. MOFs, which can be tailored for use in LISA owing to their chemical functionality, are often unstable in moist atmospheres, precluding their use. A MOF is used that can release large quantities of CO2 via LISA and is resistant to moisture across a large pH range. PCN-250 undergoes LISA, with UV flux regulating the CO2 desorption capacity. Furthermore, under UV light, the azo residues within PCN-250 have constrained, local, structural flexibility. This is dynamic, rapidly switching back to the native state. Reusability tests demonstrate a 7.3 % and 4.9 % loss in both adsorption and LISA capacity after exposure to water for five cycles. These minimal changes confirm the structural robustness of PCN-250 and its great potential for triggered release applications.
Hyper-Cross-Linked Additives that Impede Aging and Enhance Permeability in Thin Polyacetylene Films for Organic Solvent Nanofiltration

Abstract: Membrane materials with high permeability to solvents while rejecting dissolved contaminants are crucial to lowering the energy costs associated with liquid separations. However, the current lack of stable high-permeability materials require innovative engineering solutions to yield high-performance, thin membranes using stable polymers with low permeabilities. Poly[1-(trimethylsilyl)-1-propyne] (PTMSP) is one of the most permeable polymers but is extremely susceptible to physical aging. Despite recent developments in anti-aging polymer membranes, this research breakthrough has yet to be demonstrated on thin PTMSP films supported on porous polymer substrates, a crucial step toward commercializing anti-aging membranes for industrial applications. Here we report the development of scalable, thin film nanocomposite membranes supported on polymer substrates that are resistant to physical aging while having high permeabilities to alcohols. The selective layer is made up of PTMSP and nanoporous polymeric additives. The nanoporous additives provide additional passageways to solvents, enhancing the high permeability of the PTMSP materials further. Through intercalation of polyacetylene chains into the sub-nm pores of organic additives, physical aging in the consequent was significantly hindered in continuous long-term operation. Remarkably we also demonstrate that the additives enhance both membrane permeability and rejection of dissolved contaminants across the membranes, as ethanol permeability at 5.5 × 10

Abstract: This paper reports on a systematic method--called PLUXter--developed for screening and data mining of large numbers of potential metal-organic framework compounds that have been synthesized then subsequently analyzed with high throughput synchrotron radiation X-ray powder diffraction. The first part of the method utilizes principal components analysis (PCA), which allows materials to be ranked in order of crystallinity so that undesirable amorphous materials may be identified and eliminated. The second part allows structural grouping within and between s les to be observed using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). Classification using a single linkage distance produced unsatisfactory clusters however the dendrogram's structural relationships were used to establish and guide the boundaries of groups. The resultant grouping identities allowed further structure-property studies to be undertaken on representative structures from the clusters, significantly reducing time and the use of resources.

Abstract: Aging in super glassy polymers such as poly(trimethylsilylpropyne) (PTMSP), poly(4-methyl-2-pentyne) (PMP), and polymers with intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) reduces gas permeabilities and limits their application as gas-separation membranes. While super glassy polymers are initially very porous, and ultra-permeable, they quickly pack into a denser phase becoming less porous and permeable. This age-old problem has been solved by adding an ultraporous additive that maintains the low density, porous, initial stage of super glassy polymers through absorbing a portion of the polymer chains within its pores thereby holding the chains in their open position. This result is the first time that aging in super glassy polymers is inhibited whilst maintaining enhanced CO2 permeability for one year and improving CO2/N2 selectivity. This approach could allow super glassy polymers to be revisited for commercial application in gas separations.

Abstract: Oxygen is a critical gas for medical and industrial settings. Much of today's global oxygen supply is via inefficient technologies such as cryogenic distillation, membranes or zeolites. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) promise a superior alternative for oxygen separation, as their fundamental chemistry can in principle be tailored for reversible and selective oxygen capture. We evaluate the characteristics for reversible and selective uptake of oxygen by MOFs, focussing on redox‐active sites. Key characteristics for separation can also be seen in MOFs for oxygen storage roles. Engineering solutions to release adsorbed oxygen from the MOFs are discussed including Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA), Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) and the highly efficient Magnetic Induction Swing Adsorption (MISA). We conclude with the applications and outlooks for oxygen capture, storage and release, and the likely impacts the next generation of MOFs will have on industry and the broader community.
