Abstract: We report the first observation of electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) from PbS quantum dots (QDs). Different ECL intensities are observed for different ligands used to passivate the QDs, which indicates that ECL is sensitive to surface chemistry, with the potential to serve as a powerful probe of surface states and charge transfer dynamics in QDs. In particular, passivation of the QD surfaces with trioctylphosphine (TOP) increases ECL intensity by 3 orders of magnitude when compared to passivation with oleic acid alone. The observed overlap of the ECL and photoluminescence spectra suggests a significant reduction of deep surface trap states from the QDs passivated with TOP.

Abstract: Conducting polymer electrodes are developed on a flexible substrate for electroencephalography applications. These electrodes yield higher quality recordings than dry electrodes made from metal. Their performance is equivalent to commercial gel-assisted electrodes, paving the way for non-invasive, long-term monitoring of the human brain.

Prevention of the foreign body response to implantable medical devices by inflammasome inhibition

Abstract: Implantable electronic medical devices (IEMDs) are used for some clinical applications, representing an exciting prospect for the transformative treatment of intractable conditions such Parkinson’s disease, deafness, and paralysis. The use of IEMDs is limited at the moment because, over time, a foreign body reaction (FBR) develops at the device–neural interface such that ultimately the IEMD fails and needs to be removed. Here, we show that macrophage nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activity drives the FBR in a nerve injury model yet integration of an NLRP3 inhibitor into the device prevents FBR while allowing full healing of damaged neural tissue to occur.

Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Clinical Applications

Abstract: The ability of organic electrochemical transistors is explored to record human electrophysiological signals of clinical relevance. An organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) that shows a high (>1 mS) transconductance at zero applied gate voltage is used, necessitating only one power supply to bias the drain, while the gate circuit is driven by cutaneous electrical potentials. The OECT is successful in recording cardiac rhythm, eye movement, and brain activity of a human volunteer. These results pave the way for applications of OECTs as an lifying transducer for human electrophysiology.

Pulsed transistor operation enables miniaturization of electrochemical aptamer-based sensors

Abstract: By simultaneously transducing and lifying, transistors offer advantages over simpler, electrode-based transducers in electrochemical biosensors. However, transistor-based biosensors typically use static (i.e., DC) operation modes that are poorly suited for sensor architectures relying on the modulation of charge transfer kinetics to signal analyte binding. Thus motivated, here, we translate the AC “pulsed potential” approach typically used with electrochemical aptamer-based (EAB) sensors to an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT). Specifically, by applying a linearly sweeping square-wave potential to an aptamer-functionalized gate electrode, we produce current modulation across the transistor channel two orders of magnitude larger than seen for the equivalent, electrode-based biosensor. Unlike traditional EAB sensors, our aptamer-based OECT (AB-OECT) sensors critically maintain output current even with miniaturization. The pulsed transistor operation demonstrated here could be applied generally to sensors relying on kinetics-based signaling, expanding opportunities for noninvasive and high spatial resolution biosensing.

Abstract: A biosensing platform based on an organic transistor circuit for metabolite detection in highly complex biological media is introduced. The sensor circuit provides inherent background subtraction allowing for highly specific, sensitive lactate detection in tumor cell cultures. The proposed sensing platform paves the way toward rapid, label-free, and cost-effective clinically relevant in vitro diagnostic tools.
