Abstract: A Portuguese cultural manifestation with a long tradition, the Zés Pereiraslanded in Rio de Janeiro, around the middle of the 19th century, along with the massive immigration of Portuguese to Brazil. The Zés Pereiras played a fundamental role in the Carioca Carnival for at least 60 years (1850-1910) and are considered by Brazilian historiography to be the forerunners of the streetand popularCarnival in the country. This article aims to analyse the transposition of Zés Pereiras, from the North of Portugal pilgrimages and processions to the Brazilian Carnival, in addition to discussing the characteristics of this carnivalesque Zé Pereira

Abstract: Surgido na folia carioca em data incerta, por volta da metade do século XIX, o Zé Pereira quando aparece na imprensa já é considerado como algo tradicional e característico deste Carnaval. Seu introdutor teria sido o sapateiro português José Nogueira de Azevedo Paredes. O propósito do artigo é dissertar sobre a trajetória do Zé Pereira durante as seis décadas (1850-1910) em que teve relevância no Carnaval carioca, analisando a tentativa de alguns cronistas – em especial, França Júnior – de “tradicionalizar” este folguedo. Para isto, trabalharemos com os conceitos de invenção da tradição e fabricação da autenticidade. Ademais, o texto pretende discutir o pioneirismo e a própria existência de José Nogueira, utilizando o conceito de mito fundador.
