Abstract: Optimal planning of a remote area electricity supply (RAES) system is a vital challenge to achieve a reliable, clean, and cost-effective system. Various components like diesel generators, renewable energy sources, and energy storage systems are used for RAES systems. Due to the different characteristics and economic features of each component, optimal planning of RAES systems is a challengeable task. This paper presents an overview of the optimal planning procedure for RAES systems by considering the important components, parameters, methods, and data. A timely review on the state of the art is presented and the applied objective functions, design constraints, system components, and optimization algorithms are specified for the existing studies. The existing challenges for RAES systems’ planning are recognized and discussed. Recent trends and developments on the planning problem are explained in detail. Eventually, this review paper gives recommendations for future research to explore the optimal planning of components in RAES systems.

Abstract: For the suggested site in the Mal es, this research paper analyzes the possibility of a hybrid renewable microgrid that is dispatch strategy-governed in both off-grid and on-grid scenarios. The planned microgrid’s techno-environmental-economic-power-system responses have been assessed. Both the power system response study and the techno-environmental-economic study of the modelled microgrid were carried out using the software platforms DIgSILENT PowerFactory and HOMER Pro respectively. Cycle charging (CC) dispatch technique had the lowest performance for both on and off-grid modes, according to the research, with cost of energy (COE) of 0.135 and 0.213 dollars per kWh, and net present costs (NPC) of 132,906 and 147,058 dollars respectively. With an NPC of 113,137 dollars and a COE of 0.166 dollars/kWh, the generator order strategy operates optimally while in on-grid mode. On the other hand, load following operates at its finest in off-grid mode, with a COE of 0.024 dollars/kWh and a NPC of 141,448 dollars. The microgrid’s reactive power, different bus voltages and frequency responses demonstrate how the proposed system, which employs the dispatch approach, voltage Q droop, and input mode PQ controller, operates steadily. For the purpose of illustrating the importance of the research effort, a comparison section between the planned HOMER optimizer and other optimization approaches is also included. The research was done with the Mal es in mind, but it offers a general notion for setting up a microgrid anyplace in the world with comparable weather and load circumstances. Abstract: In this paper, two techniques of game theory are considered for sizing and comparative analysis of a grid-connected networked microgrid, based on a multi-objective imperialistic competition algorithm (ICA) for system optimization. The selected networked microgrid, which consists of two different grid-connected microgrids with common electrical load and main grid, might have different combinations of generation resources including wind turbine, photovoltaic panels, and batteries. The game theory technique of Nash equilibrium is developed to perform the effective sizing of the networked microgrid in which capacities of the generation resources and batteries are considered as players and annual profit as payoff. In order to meet the equilibrium point and the optimum sizes of generation resources, all possible coalitions between the players are considered ICA, which is frequently used in optimization applications, is implemented using MATLAB software. Both techniques of game theory, Shapley values and Nash equilibrium, are used to find the annual profit of each microgrid, and results are compared based on optimum sizing, and maximum values of annual profit are identified. Finally, in order to validate the results of the networked microgrid, the sensitivity analysis is studied to examine the impact of electricity price and discount rates on maximum values of profit for both game theory techniques.

Abstract: Efficient transmission of power is a pressing concern in modern power systems as it could relieve additional investments (e.g., right of way) and may improve stability. Non-uniform loading of transmission lines (which normally occurs due to the inefficient transmission of power) may lead to overloading of a few lines. These lines would then be prone to voltage instability. However, this problem would be aggravated under the network contingency condition. This paper focuses on improving the line loadability of the transmission system by considering the benchmark voltage stability index named rapid voltage stability index. The optimal loadability problem is considered using the grey wolf algorithm. The proposed work is implemented on a standard IEEE 30 bus test system using MATLAB software by addressing the problem by using line stability voltage index and grey wolf algorithm in optimal power flow. Minimizations of cost of generation, carbon emissions, voltage deviation, and line losses have been considered as objectives and improve the line loadability of the transmission system. The simulation results show that the proposed method is very effective in improving line loadability, reducing line congestion and fuel cost. Furthermore, the methodology is tested rigorously under various contingency conditions and is shown to be very effective. The proposed method relieves transmission line congestion and reduces fuel costs using the rapid voltage stability index (RVSI) is tested on an IEEE 30-bus standard test system utilizing MATLAB for various contingency lines

Abstract: In a photovoltaic (PV)-battery integrated system, the battery undergoes frequent charging and discharging cycles that reduces its operational life and affects its performance considerably. As such, an intelligent power control approach for a PV-battery standalone system is proposed in this paper to improve the reliability of the battery along its operational life. The proposed control strategy works in two regulatory modes: maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode and battery management system (BMS) mode. The novel controller tracks and harvests the maximum available power from the solar cells under different atmospheric conditions via MPPT scheme. On the other hand, the state of charge (SOC) estimation technique is developed using backpropagation neural network (BPNN) algorithm under BMS mode to manage the operation of the battery storage during charging, discharging, and islanding approaches to prolong the battery lifetime. A case study is demonstrated to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme which shows only 0.082% error for real-world applications. The study discloses that the projected BMS control strategy satisfies the battery-lifetime objective for off-grid PV-battery hybrid systems by avoiding the over-charging and deep-discharging disturbances significantly.

Abstract: With the rapid increase of renewable energy generation worldwide, real‐time information has become essential to manage such assets, especially for systems installed offshore and in remote areas. To date, there is no cost‐effective condition monitoring technique that can assess the state of renewable energy sources in real‐time and provide suitable asset management decisions to optimize the utilization of such valuable assets and avoid any full or partial blackout due to unexpected faults. Based on the Internet of Things scheme, this paper represents a new application for the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor a hybrid system comprising photovoltaic, wind, and battery energy storage systems. Electrical parameters such as voltage, current, and power are monitored in real‐time via the ThingSpeak website. Network operators can control components of the hybrid power system remotely by the proposed SCADA system. The SCADA system is interfaced with the Matlab/Simulink software tool through KEPServerEX client. For cost‐effective design, low‐cost electronic components and Arduino Integrated Development Environment ATMega2560 remote terminal unit are employed to develop a hardware prototype for experimental analysis. Simulation and experimental results attest to the feasibility of the proposed system. Compared with other existing techniques, the developed system features advantages in terms of reliability and cost‐effectiveness.

Abstract: In this paper, an innovative switching scheme named simultaneous space vector modulation (SSVM) is proposed for integrating various AC sources in the energy industry using a unified multiport converter. The proposed SSVM technique is applied to the multileg topology of a multiport converter, which is an encouraging option for the grid integration of renewable energy sources and multimachine drives. Considering the shared leg in the multileg converter, the proposed SSVM can utilize the utmost simultaneous switching states between different ports, resulting in lower switching loss and better DC‐link voltage utilization compared with the conventional sequential space vector modulation approach. A novel decision matrix concept is introduced to identify the simultaneous switching states. For this aim, according to the number of ports of the multileg converter, decision matrices containing valid simultaneous switching states are first calculated. Then, they are defined as look‐up tables in the proposed SSVM to be retrieved and exploited in every s ling period. The effectiveness of the proposed SSVM for a seven‐leg version of the multileg converter is assessed using the simulation analysis and real‐time validation. The capability of the proposed SSVM‐based multiport converter in grid integration of AC renewable energy sources is also verified considering two permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)‐based wind turbines with real wind speed patterns. The simulation results confirm that the proposed SSVM is properly able to manage the power flow between different ports and improve the DC voltage utilization and switching loss compared with the sequential SVM.

Abstract: Wind farms can contribute to ancillary services to the power system, by advancing and adopting new control techniques in existing, and also in new, wind turbine generator systems. One of the most important aspects of ancillary service related to wind farms is frequency regulation, which is partitioned into inertial response, primary control, and supplementary control or automatic generation control (AGC). The contribution of wind farms for the first two is well addressed in literature however, the AGC and its associated controls require more attention. In this paper, in the first step, the contribution of wind farms in supplementary/load frequency control of AGC is overviewed. As second step, a fractional order proportional-integral-differential (FOPID) controller is proposed to control the governor speed of wind turbine to contribute to the AGC. The performance of FOPID controller is compared with classic proportional-integral-differential (PID) controller, to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed control method in the frequency regulation of a two-area power system. Furthermore, the effect of penetration level of wind farms on the load frequency control is analyzed.

Abstract: Energy consumption is increasing rapidly hence, the energy demand cannot be fulfilled using traditional power resources only. Power systems based on renewable energy, including solar and wind, are effective and friendly for the environment. Islanded hybrid microgrid systems (IHMS) are relatively new in this industry and combine two or more sustainable sources, such as wind turbines, solar photovoltaic (PV), and other renewable alternatives, ocean, wave, and geothermal energy, etc. While sustainable, long-lasting power sources are the best choice to satisfy the growing energy demands, they are still not yet ready to be used on a large scale due to their stochastic characteristics. Furthermore, integrating these sources into the existing energy system can cause high technical difficulties, due to the stochastic nature of solar and wind in the conventional grid system and common stand-alone framework. A review of research and applications of the effective hybridization of renewable energy sources is therefore essential to address those technical and economic issues and ensure system stability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This article discusses the challenges that might arise when a PV plant and a wind power station are combined to produce power for the conventional main grid or in a stand-alone system. In addition, this analysis provides light on optimization approaches for improving power quality and cost-effectiveness in a solar and wind integrated IHMS. Voltage fluctuation, frequency deviation, and the uncertain nature of solar irradiation and wind sources are significant challenges for both grid-connected and standalone hybrid systems. This study then provides an overview of the control strategies which might help enhance the integration of the IHMS in producing electricity for distribution to the grid-connected load and the islanded load. In this study, the possible issues that can hinder the smooth integration of these renewable sources have been discussed. Finally, this study discusses the recent platforms being used in IHMS as well as the potential of dispatch strategies on solar and wind-integrated IHMS.

Abstract: The extensive development of renewable energies in power systems causes several problems due to intermittent output power generation. To tackle the challenge, demand response contribution to ancillary service is currently well recognized under the smart grid infrastructure. The application of the heat pump water heater (HPWH) as a controllable load in primary frequency control is well presented in the literature however, the motivation of this paper is to use HPWHs for secondary frequency control. To this end, a model predictive control (MPC) method for a two-area power system incorporating HPWHs to contribute to secondary frequency control is proposed in this paper. A detailed model of HPWH is employed as a controllable load to control the power consumption during water heating. The MPC method predicts the future control signals using a quadratic programming-based optimization. It uses the system model, past inputs and outputs, as well as system control signals to predict the next signals. The effective performance of the proposed method for the two-area power system with HPWH is demonstrated for different scenarios of load changes, intermittent renewable power generation and parameter variations as the sensitivity analysis.

Abstract: Virtual power plants (VPPs) are an effective platform for attracting private investment and customer engagement to speed up the integration of green renewable resources. In this paper, a robust bidding strategy to participate in both energy and ancillary service markets in the wholesale electricity market is proposed for a realistic VPP in Western Australia. The strategy is accurate and fast, so the VPP can bid in a very short time period. To engage customers in the demand management schemes of the VPP, the gamified approach is utilized to make the exercise enjoyable while not compromising their comfort levels. The modelling of revenue, expenses, and profit for the load-following ancillary service (LFAS) is provided, and the effective bidding strategy is developed. The simulation results show a significant improvement in the financial indicators of the VPP when participating in both the LFAS and energy markets. The payback period can be improved by 3 years to the payback period of 6 years and the internal rate of return (IRR) by 7.5% to the IRR of 18% by participating in both markets. The accuracy and speed of the proposed bidding strategy method is evident when compared with a mathematical method.

Abstract: The electrification of transportation has been developed to support energy efficiency and CO2 reduction. As a result, electric vehicles (EVs) have become more popular in the current transport system to create more efficient energy. In recent years, this increase in EVs as well as renewable energy resources (RERs) has led to a major issue for power system networks. This paper studies electrical vehicles (EVs) and their applications in the smart grid and provides practical solutions for EV charging strategies in a smart power system to overcome the issues associated with large-scale EV penetrations. The research first reviews the EV battery infrastructure and charging strategies and introduces the main impacts of uncontrolled charging on the power grid. Then, it provides a practical overview of the existing and future solutions to manage the large-scale integration of EVs into the network. The simulation results for two controlled strategies of maximum sensitivity selection (MSS) and genetic algorithm (GA) optimization are presented and reviewed. A comparative analysis was performed to prove the application and validity of the solution approaches. This also helps researchers with the application of the optimization approaches on EV charging strategies. These two algorithms were implemented on a modified IEEE 23 kV medium voltage distribution system with switched shunt capacitors (SSCs) and a low voltage residential network, including EVs and nonlinear EV battery chargers.

Abstract: This paper presents an evaluation of the optimized design of an off-grid hybrid microgrid for alternative load dispatch algorithms with the determination of the most optimal sizing of each equipment, analyzing the voltage and frequency outputs and various costs of the proposed microgrids. Kushighat and Rajendro Bazar, two geographical locations in Bangladesh have been taken as test sites. The proposed microgrids incorporating diesel generator, renewable resources, storage device, and 23.31 kW of demand have been optimized for five conventional load dispatch methodologies: HOMER predictive dispatch, Load Following, Generator Order, Cycle Charging, and Combined Dispatch to reduce the system’s net present cost, gas discharge and cost of energy. HOMER (Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Electric Renewables) software has been used for the analysis to determine the optimal sizes and costing and the voltage-frequency performances of the microgrids are analyzed using MATLAB/Simulink. From our analysis, load following is determined as the superior approach with a minimum operating cost of 3738 USD, net present cost of 152,023 USD, CO2 discharge of 3375 kg/year and cost of energy of 0.208 USD /kWh along with a steady voltage-frequency output. Combined dispatch is determined as the worst strategy for the proposed microgrids with the highest energy cost of 0.532 USD /kWh, the operational cost of 15,394 USD, net present cost of 415,030 USD, and high CO2 discharge. At the end of this work, a comparative analysis between the proposed design, another hybrid, and traditional generation plant is also presented. The findings of this work will be appropriate for any location with an identical demand profile and meteorological estate.

Abstract: Optimal sizing of hybrid energy systems has been considerably investigated in previous studies. Nevertheless, most studies only focused on providing AC electric loads by renewable energy sources (RESs) and energy storage systems (ESSs). In this paper, a hybrid energy system, including photovoltaic (PV) system, ESS, fuel cell (FC), natural gas (NG) boiler, thermal load controller (TLC), and converter is optimized for supplying different load demands. Three scenarios are introduced to investigate the feasibility of the energy system. Environmental aspects of each system are analyzed, as there are NG-consuming sources in the system structure. A sensitivity analysis is conducted on the influential parameters of the system, such as inflation rate and interest rate. Simulation results show that the proposed hybrid energy system is economically and technically feasible. The net present cost (NPC) and cost of energy (COE) of the system are obtained at $230,223 and $0.0409, respectively. The results indicate that the TLC plays a key role in the optimal operation of the PV system and the reduction in greenhouse gas emission productions.

Abstract: An intriguing question is how the capacity of non-shivering thermogenesis (NST)-a special mechanism supporting endothermic thermoregulation in mammals-is affected by selection for high exercise metabolism. It has been proposed that high NST could be a mechanism to compensate for a low basal production of heat. On the other hand, high basal or activity metabolism is associated with physiological characteristics such as high performance of the circulatory system, which are also required for achieving a high NST. Here we tested whether selection for high aerobic exercise performance, which correlates with an increased basal metabolic rate, led to a correlated evolution of maximum and facultative NST. Therefore, we measured the NST of bank voles, Myodes (= Clethrionomys) glareolus, from lines selected for 13-14 generations (n=46) for high aerobic metabolism achieved during swimming and from unselected, control lines (n=46). Open-flow respirometry was used to measure the rate of oxygen consumption (V(·)O2) in anesthetized bank voles injected with noradrenaline (NA). After adjusting for body mass, maximum NST (maximum V(·)O2 recorded after injection of NA) did not differ between the selected (2.38±0.08 mLO2min(-1)) and control lines (2.36±0.08 mLO2min(-1) P=0.891). Facultative NST (= maximum NST minus resting metabolic rate of anesthetized animals) did not differ between the selected (1.49±0.07 mLO2min(-1)) and control lines (1.50±0.07 mLO2min(-1) P=0.985), either. Therefore, our results suggest that NST capacity is not strongly linked to maximum activity-related aerobic metabolic rate.

Abstract: This paper assessed the small-signal stability performance of a multi-converter-based direct current microgrid (DCMG). The oscillation and potential interactions between critical modes are evaluated. First, the complete analytical model of the DCMG is developed with the converter and associated controllers. Three methodologies, impedance scanning, eigenvalue analysis, and time-domain simulation, along with the fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis, have been used to comprehensively investigate the oscillations and interactions. The simulation results show inherent weak modes, with a wide range of oscillations in the studied DCMG, which may destabilize the system under disturbances. Based on the sensitivity analysis, controller gains and DC-link capacitance are identified as the most critical parameters and substantially influence the weak modes leading to oscillations, interactions, and resonance. Finally, the performance of the various control synthesis methods is compared. This examination would help the researchers, planning, and design engineers to design and stably operate a multi converter-based DC microgrid.

Abstract: Photovoltaic (PV) energy systems have found erse applications in fulfilling the increasing energy demand worldwide. Transformer-less PV inverters convert the DC energy from PV systems to AC energy and deliver it to the grid through a non-isolated connection. This paper proposes a new transformer-less grid-connected PV inverter. A closed-loop control scheme is presented for the proposed transformer-less inverter to connect it with the power grid. The proposed transformer-less inverter reduces extra leakage current and holds the common-mode voltage at a constant point. To eliminate extra leakage current, as well as achieve constant common-mode voltage, a midpoint cl ing method is utilized to operate the inverter. The proposed transformer-less inverter is formed of seven insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) employing a unipolar sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) technique for switching purposes. An LCL filter is employed to reshape the two-level inverter output voltage and current to obtain closer sinusoidal waveforms. The output voltage and current total harmonic distortion (THD) of the proposed transformer-less inverter were found to be 1.25% and 0.94%, respectively, in the grid-connected mode. The leakage current elimination mechanism with the proposed transformer-less inverter is deeply analyzed in this paper. The performances of the proposed transformer-less inverter were evaluated with MATLAB/Simulink simulation and validated in a laboratory scale experiment.

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) plays an indispensable role in present-day household electricity management. Nevertheless, practical development of cost-effective intelligent condition monitoring, protection, and control techniques for household distribution systems is still a challenging task. This paper is taking one step forward into a practical implementation of such techniques by developing an IoT Smart Household Distribution Board (ISHDB) to monitor and control various household smart appliances. The main function of the developed ISHDB is collecting and storing voltage, current, and power data and presenting them in a user-friendly way. The performance of the developed system is investigated under various residential electrical loads of different energy consumption profiles. In this regard, an Arduino-based working prototype is employed to gather the collected data into the ThingSpeak cloud through a Wi-Fi medium. Blynk mobile application is also implemented to facilitate real-time monitoring by in idual consumers. Microprocessor technology is adopted to automate the process, and reduce hardware size and cost. Experimental results show that the developed system can be used effectively for real-time home energy management. It can also be used to detect any abnormal performance of the electrical appliances in real-time through monitoring their in idual current and voltage waveforms. A comparison of the developed system and other existing techniques reveals the superiority of the proposed method in terms of the implementation cost and execution time.

Abstract: Rural electrification is necessary for both the country’s development and the well-being of the villagers. The current study investigates the feasibility of providing electricity to off-grid villages in the Indian state of Odisha by utilizing renewable energy resources that are currently available in the study area. However, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, it is highly improbable to ensure a continuous electricity supply to the off-grid areas. To ensure a reliable electricity supply to the off-grid areas, three battery technologies have been incorporated to find the most suitable battery system for the study area. In addition, we evaluated various demand side management (DSM) techniques and assessed which would be the most suitable for our study area. To assess the efficiency of the off-grid system, we applied different metaheuristic algorithms, and the results showed great promise. Based on our findings, it is clear that energy-conservation-based DSM is the ideal option for the study area. From all the algorithms tested, the salp swarm algorithm demonstrated the best performance for the current study.

Abstract: The electricity market has increasingly played a significant role in ensuring the smooth operation of the power grid. The latest incarnation of the electricity market follows a bottom-up paradigm, rather than a top-down one, and aims to provide flexibility services to the power grid. The blockchain-based local energy market (LEM) is one such bottom-up market paradigm. It essentially enables consumers and prosumers (those who can generate power locally) within a defined power network topology to trade renewable energy amongst each other in a peer-to-peer (P2P) fashion using blockchain technology. This paper presents the development of such a P2P trading-facilitated LEM and the analysis of the proposed blockchain-based LEM by means of a case study using actual German residential customer data. The performance of the proposed LEM is also compared with that of BAU, in which power is traded via time-of-use (ToU) and feed-in-tariff (FiT) rates. The comparative results demonstrate: (1) the participants’ bill savings (2) mitigation of the power grid’s export and import (3) no/minimal variations in the margins of energy suppliers and system operators and (4) cost comparison of Ethereum versus Polygon blockchain, thus emphasising the domineering performance of the developed P2P trading-based LEM mechanism.
