Abstract: The characterization of multifloral honey regarding the mineral composition, sugar content and basic physicochemical properties has been done. The total of 164 honey s les was collected from six regions of Serbia during 2009 harvesting season. Univariate data analysis (descriptive statistics and analysis of variance), geographic information system and pattern recognition methods (principal component analysis and cluster analysis) have been performed in order to identify geographical origin of honey. The content of Mg, K, and Cu, electrical conductivity, and optical rotation were established as useful indicators in tracing regional differences between honey s les. S les originated from Zlatibor region were clearly distinguished from those from the rest of Serbia showing higher K and Mg content, as well as higher values of optical rotation, electrical conductivity, and free acidity. The influence of the soil composition, and climate conditions, as well as the presence of particular flora on the honey composition is stressed out. The modeling of geographic origin of honey has been attempted by the means of linear discriminant analysis.

Abstract: Surface and buried sediments were analyzed for Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn and V, as well as for total carbon and hydrogen to assess the distribution of sediment pollution due to the vicinity of the petrochemical complex. The s les, collected from 20 locations within the petrochemical complex and from 16 locations outside the complex, were aqua regia extracted and analyzed by ICP/OES. Metals were determined with an acceptable accuracy for certified metals of 82-113%. The precision for the aqua regia extraction was satisfactory, less than 20%, except for Cd where it was 28%. Comparison of the data from the petrochemical with those from the non-petrochemical areas showed different distributions of the metals. Metals that exceeded the baseline range Ba, Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb, were detected in higher concentrations in sediments that were under the influence of the chlor-alkali plant within the petrochemical complex. Comparison with data from the petrochemical complex and its surroundings and their distribution demonstrated that the metal compositions of the sediments were modified by anthropogenic activities.

Abstract: This paper presents the extraction of major and trace elements from a coal s le, in deionized water, by using three different extraction techniques. Rotary mixing and ultrasonic extraction were examined for different extraction times, while the microwave assisted extraction was performed at different temperatures. Metal concentrations (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe, Mn, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, As, Ni, Se, Sb and Pb) in a solution were determined by employing the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry whereas the results obtained for Na, K, Ca and Mg were compared employing ion chromatography. Comparing the rotary and ultrasonic-assisted extraction it is shown that the former is more efficient for the determination of Fe, Na and Pb, whereas the latter one has proven more efficient for the determination of Co and Cr ions. Microwave-assisted extraction has proven the most efficient method for any elements tested in coal. In addition, sequential extraction of elements was done using microwave digestion. The results of sequential extraction experiments indicated associations of investigated elements with a mineral phase and organic matrix. Sequential extraction provided information on possible leaching of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, Fe and Mn in environmental conditions.

Abstract: The sequential extraction procedure of the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) was applied for the fractionation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, and V in the Serbian river sediments. The aim of this paper was to describe a new approach in detection of anthropogenic elements in sediments, related to the Serbian river courses in order to assess their metal contamination. For sediment pollution evaluation, the risk assessment code (RAC) and the secondary phase enrichment factor (KSPEF) were used. Metal fractionation showed more easily mobilized forms predominant for copper, zinc, cadmium, manganese, and lead, which can be one of the indicators for anthropogenic source input. Chromium, nickel, iron, and vanadium found in the residual fraction indicate these metals may be an indicator for natural sources input. Based on RAC classification, results of sediments show no risk (Cr and V), low risk (Ni, Pb, and Fe), medium risk (Cu), high risk (Cd and Zn), and very high risk (Mn). The mean values of KSPEF were Cd > Cu > Zn > Ni > Mn > Pb > Fe > Cr > V, decreasing scale of no to moderately severe enrichment. The sediments were found to be contaminated by heavy metals to various extents, mostly Cd, Cu, and Zn. Research has shown the importance of KSPEF in quantifying degree of metal enrichment in sediments using results of sequential extraction. With the application of this factor, which is not frequently used in the scientific literature, the results obtained with sequential extraction can be used not only for assessment of mobility but also to quantify the metal pollution.

Abstract: The single agent extractions of major and trace metals from soil s le were conducted by means of rotary mixer and ultrasonic bath with sonication time of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 min. The sequential extraction according to the BCR scheme was undertaken. The obtained soil extracts were analyzed by ICP-OES and according to the results the rotary mixer assisted extraction was more efficient in the case of alkaline-earth elements. However, by the use of ultrasound several times higher amounts of matrix elements (Fe, Al and Mn) and heavy metals predominantly associated with Fe, Al and Mn oxyhydroxides were extracted. The increase of the sonication time failed to improve extraction yields. The changes of the conductivity, pH, oxidoreduction potential, particle size diameter and zeta potential of colloid particles, with the sonication time increase were measured. The extraction mechanism and expressed selectivity of ultrasound is discussed and explanation is suggested.

Abstract: The graphene oxide (GO) due to its exceptional structure, physicochemical and mechanical properties is a very attractive material for industry application. Even though, the unique properties of GO (e.g. structure, size, shape, etc.) make the risk assessment of this nanomaterial very challenging in comparison with conventional ecotoxicology studies required by regulators. Thus, there is a need for standardized characterization techniques and methodology to secure a high quality/reliable data on the ecotoxicology of GO, and to establish environmentally acceptable levels. Herein, authors address the crucial quality criteria when evaluating the ecotoxicology of GO using an algae (Raphidocelis subcapitata) and a shrimp (Paratya australiensis). This study provides a detail characterization and modification of the used GO, robust quantification and a suspension stability in different media for ecotoxicology studies. It was observed that under the same exposure conditions the behavior of GO and the estimated outcomes (IC

Abstract: Arsenic reduction in drinking water can include treatment by adsorption, switching to alternative water sources, or blending with water that has a lower arsenic concentration. Commercial sorbents MTM, Greensand and BIRM (Clack Corporation) were modified with zirconium and titanium after activation. The modifications were performed with titanium tetrachloride and zirconium tetrachloride. The modified sorbents were dried at different temperatures. The sorption of arsenate and arsenite dissolved in drinking water (200?g L-1) onto the sorbents were tested using a batch procedure. After removal of the sorbent, the concentration of arsenic was determined by HG-AAS. Zirconium-modified BIRM showed the best performance for the removal of both arsenite and arsenate. Modification of the greensand did not affect arsenic sorption ability. Zirconium-modified BIRM diminished the concentration of total As to below 5 ?g L-1.

Abstract: Arsenic (As) is the world's most hazardous chemical found in drinking water of many countries therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of low-cost adsorbents for its removal. Here, we report a highly versatile and synthetic route for the preparation of a three-dimensional (3D) graphene-iron oxide nanoparticle aerogel composite for the efficient removal of As from contaminated water. This unique three-dimensional (3D) interconnected network was prepared from natural graphite rocks with a simple reaction, without the use of harsh chemicals, which combines with the exfoliation of graphene oxide (GO) sheets via the reduction of ferrous ion to form a graphene aerogel composite decorated with iron oxide nanoparticles. The prepared adsorbent showed outstanding absorption performance for the removal of As from contaminated water, because of its high surface-to-volume ratio and characteristic pore network in the 3D architecture. The performed case study using real drinking water contaminated with As under batch conditions showed successful removal of arsenic to the concentration recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Abstract: The activity of organic selenium against pathogenic molds and its use as a potential selenium source in the production of enriched mushrooms were examined. The effect of commercial selenized yeast on mycelia growth was examined using a method with mycelia disks and a well diffusion method. For mushroom enrichment, different concentrations of selenium were added to a growth substrate. The results presented in this paper suggest that the most suitable concentration of selenized yeast that inhibits the growth of the mycopathogenic molds is 70-100 mg/kg of selenium. With the addition of this concentration to the substrate, mushroom fruit bodies will uptake a high level of selenium, about 100 ?g/g for Pleurotus spp., and 200 ?g/g for Agaricus bisporus in dry weight of the mushroom. Thereby a double effect in the cultivation of mushrooms is achieved.

Abstract: In the present study, concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Co, Mn, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined at 35 river sediments in Serbia. The anthropogenic heavy metals input and quantification of the metal enrichment degree in sediments were estimated by calculating geo-accumulation indices (I(geo)) and enrichment factors (EF). These pollution indices have been calculated using different background values (continental crust and local background values) and different element used for normalization (Al and Fe), followed by result comparison. The EF values calculated with continental crust as background (minor to extremely severe enrichment) were higher than when regional background values were used (minor to moderate enrichment). Significant influence of background values on the I(geo) values is observed. Values of geo-accumulation index (<2) revealed that studied river sediments are remaining unpolluted to moderately polluted with Co, Mn, Cr, and Ni. Significant pollution in the sediments was observed for Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn elements. The results of this study confirm the relevance of precise and accurate determining of local background concentrations while assessing sediment pollution. The values of EFs for studied elements were more influenced by the choice of background values than selection of element used for normalization. Our recommendation would be to use the local and regional background content in quantification of metal contamination in sediments, since these values differ and are site and region dependent.

Abstract: Phenols containing halogens, which tend to deactivate the aromatic nuclei, constitute a significant category of highly toxic and difficult-to-degrade pollutants, which arise from a wide variety of industries. The main purpose of this study was to obtain an inexpensive immobilized enzyme for the removal of phenols. Partially purified potato polyphenol oxidase (PPO) was immobilized onto different commercial and laboratory produced carriers. Three of the obtained biocatalysts, with the highest PPO activities, namely Eupergit C250L-PPO Celite-PPO and Cellulose M-PPO, were tested in a batch reactor for the removal of phenol, 4-chlorophenol and 4-bromophenol. In the case of 2.5 mM substrates with Eupergit C250L-PPO, an around 45% removal of 4-bromophenol was achieved, while the removals 4-chlorophenol and phenol were 35% and 20%, respectively. The reusability of Eupergit C250L-PPO for the removal of 4-chlorophenol was tested. After eight repeated tests, the efficiency of 4-chlorophenol removal by Eupergit C250L-PPO immobilizate had decreased to 55%.

Abstract: Composite material Zr-doped TiO2, suitable for the removal of arsenic from water, was synthetized with fast and simple microwave-hydrothermal method. Obtained material, Zr-TiO2, had uniform size and composition with zirconium ions incorporated into crystal structure of titanium dioxide. Synthetized composite material had large specific surface area and well-developed micropore and mesopore structure that was responsible for fast adsorption of As(III) and As(V) from water. The influence of pH on the adsorption capacity of arsenic was studied. The kinetics and isotherm experiments were also performed. The treatment of natural water s le containing high concentration of arsenic with composite material Zr-TiO2 was efficient. The concentration of arsenic was reduced to the value recommended by WHO.
