Abstract: Fossil roots with nodular and abbreviated lateral roots are described from the Devils Kitchen locality within the Lower Cretaceous Otway Group. The general morphology of these roots indicates a mycorrhizal association, the oldest such record from Australia. Based on the root morphology and associated megaflora it is considered that the roots are coniferous (Taxodiaceae or Podocarpaceae) an association of the roots with foliage of Geinitzia tetragona sp. nov., which is possibly taxodiaceous, is indicated. The major role of nodular mycorrhizal roots in extant plants is phosphate uptake which enhances minor nitrogen uptake. It is suggested that the fossil roots may have had a similar role. The Devils Kitchen locality is interpreted as a levee or near channel deposit with better drainage andlor a nutrient-poor soil relative to other soils in the sequence. The atypical plant associations of Cladophlebis australis, C. sp. b, and Geinitzia tetragona sp. nov. are a reflection of the above.

Abstract: In 1907 Halle (1911) collected a erse wood assemblage from the organic clays and lignites of the Forest Bed on West Point Island. This wood assemblage provides a reliable basis for determining the local arboreal component of the vegetation comprising the Forest Bed community. Five wood types have been recognised from Halle's collection as belonging to the Cupressaceae and Podocarpaceae. A reinvestigation of the only dicotyledonous angiosperm wood collected from this bed found that it resembled most closely Weinmannia L. of the Cunoniaceae. Together these remains represent an increased ersity of wood types derived from the arboreal component of thc vegetation, relative to previous studies. Gymnosperms are likely to have comprised the overstorey with angiosperms forming a closed canopy, interpreted as a broadleaf-gymnosperm temperate-type rainforest. The results agree with arecent palynological study of the same deposits, which concluded that the vegetative composition of the Forest Bed is a unique variant of the continuum of the Nothofagus Blume-Podocarpaceae rainforests that existed on middlehigh latitude landmasses across the Southern Hemisphere during the Late Tertiary.
Long-read assemblies reveal structural diversity in genomes of organelles – an example with Acacia pycnantha

Abstract: Organelle genomes are typically represented as single, static, circular molecules. However, there is evidence that the chloroplast genome exists in two structural haplotypes and that the mitochondrial genome can display multiple circular, linear or branching forms. We sequenced and assembled chloroplast and mitochondrial genomes of the Golden Wattle, Acacia pycnantha, using long reads, iterative baiting to extract organelle-only reads, and several assembly algorithms to explore genomic structure. Using a de novo assembly approach agnostic to previous hypotheses about structure, we found that different assemblies revealed contrasting arrangements of genomic segments a hypothesis supported by mapped reads spanning alternate paths.
Comparative dating of Acacia: Combining fossils and multiple phylogenies to infer ages of clades with poor fossil records

Abstract: The ubiquitous and highly erse element Australian Acacia makes an ideal candidate for investigating a range of questions about the evolution of the flora of continental Australia. In the past, such efforts have been h ered by a lack of well-supported phylogenies and by the relatively poor macrofossil record, which probably reflects the depositional environment in which Acacia species are predominantly found. However, the broader subfamily Mimosoideae offers several reliably age-constrained fossils that can be used as calibrations in ergence-dating analyses of DNA sequence data. In addition, the microfossil pollen record of Acacia is relatively rich and provides a good age constraint for the entire Acacia clade. By using multiple reliable fossil constraints, we applied a combination of primary calibration points to produce a comprehensive study of ergence dates in Acacia s.s. and related mimosoid legumes. Previous dating studies included very limited s les of the ersity of Australian Acacia and experienced difficulties in identifying appropriate age calibrations for the lineage, leading to considerable variation in their results. We used novel calibration schemes and multiple nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequence markers to produce the first estimates of ergence dates for major lineages within the Australian Acacia s.s. clade and for related lineages across the Mimosoideae subfamily. We estimate average crown ergence dates for Vachellia at 13–17 Ma, Senegalia at 31.0–33.4 Ma and Acacia s.s. at 21.0–23.9 Ma. The timing of radiations within these lineages is consistent with the hypothesis that Miocene aridification in Africa, the Americas and Australia was a driver for the ersificationss of lineages in Acacia s.l.

Biodiversity and terrestrial ecology of a mid-Cretaceous, high-latitude floodplain, Alexander Island, Antarctica

Abstract: The bio ersity and terrestrial ecology of the Late Albian Triton Point Formation (Fossil Bluff Group), Alexander Island, Antarctica is analysed to improve our understanding of polar biomes during the mid-Cretaceous thermal optimum. This formation was deposited on a high-latitude (75°S) floodplain and consists of two facies associations, a lower braided alluvial plain unit and an upper coastal meander-belt unit. Analysis of fossil plants in well exposed palaeosols reveals the existence of spatially complex plant communities. Braidplains supported patchy, low-density (91 trees/ha) stands of podocarp and taxodioid conifers on floodbasin substrates, and conifer–cycadophyte–fern–angiosperm thickets in riparian settings. Coastal meander-belts supported medium density (568 trees/ha) podocarp–araucarian conifer forests on mature floodbasin soils, and fern–angiosperm–ginkgo thickets in riparian settings. Growth-ring analysis indicates plants experienced stressful growing conditions on the braidplain characterized by high-frequency flood events, but more favourable growing conditions on the coastal plain. Additional vegetation disturbances were caused by arthropod–fungal attack, frost and wildfire. In terms of structure, composition, ecology and productivity these predominantly evergreen, broad-leafed conifer forests bear similarities to the extant temperate rainforests of New Zealand.

Abstract: The Marine Mesozoic Revolution (MMR, starting ~200 million years ago) changed the ecological structure of sea floor communities due to increased predation pressure. It was thought to have caused the migration of less mobile invertebrates, such as stalked isocrinid crinoids, into deeper marine environments by the end of the Mesozoic. Recent studies questioned this hypothesis, suggesting the MMR was globally asynchronous. Alternatively, Cenozoic occurrences from Antarctica and South America were described as retrograde reversions to Palaeozoic type communities in cool water. Our results provide conclusive evidence that isocrinid migration from shallow to deep water did not occur at the same time all over the world. The description of a substantial new fauna from Antarctica and Australia, from often-overlooked isolated columnals and articulated crinoids, in addition to the first compilation to our knowledge of Cenozoic Southern Hemisphere isocrinid data, demonstrates a continuous record of shallow marine isocrinids from the Cretaceous-Paleogene to the Eocene/Oligocene boundary.

Testing the Impact of Calibration on Molecular Divergence Times Using a Fossil-Rich Group: The Case of Nothofagus (Fagales)

Abstract: Although temporal calibration is widely recognized as critical for obtaining accurate ergence-time estimates using molecular dating methods, few studies have evaluated the variation resulting from different calibration strategies. Depending on the information available, researchers have often used primary calibrations from the fossil record or secondary calibrations from previous molecular dating studies. In analyses of flowering plants, primary calibration data can be obtained from macro- and mesofossils (e.g., leaves, flowers, and fruits) or microfossils (e.g., pollen). Fossil data can vary substantially in accuracy and precision, presenting a difficult choice when selecting appropriate calibrations. Here, we test the impact of eight plausible calibration scenarios for Nothofagus (Nothofagaceae, Fagales), a plant genus with a particularly rich and well-studied fossil record. To do so, we reviewed the phylogenetic placement and geochronology of 38 fossil taxa of Nothofagus and other Fagales, and we identified minimum age constraints for up to 18 nodes of the phylogeny of Fagales. Molecular dating analyses were conducted for each scenario using maximum likelihood (RAxML + r8s) and Bayesian (BEAST) approaches on sequence data from six regions of the chloroplast and nuclear genomes. Using either ingroup or outgroup constraints, or both, led to similar age estimates, except near strongly influential calibration nodes. Using "early but risky" fossil constraints in addition to "safe but late" constraints, or using assumptions of vicariance instead of fossil constraints, led to older age estimates. In contrast, using secondary calibration points yielded drastically younger age estimates. This empirical study highlights the critical influence of calibration on molecular dating analyses. Even in a best-case situation, with many thoroughly vetted fossils available, substantial uncertainties can remain in the estimates of ergence times. For ex le, our estimates for the crown group age of Nothofagus varied from 13 to 113 Ma across our full range of calibration scenarios. We suggest that increased background research should be made at all stages of the calibration process to reduce errors wherever possible, from verifying the geochronological data on the fossils to critical reassessment of their phylogenetic position.

Abstract: The angiosperm family Proteaceae is a distinct component of the Cape Floristic Region bio ersity hotspot with 330 endemic species. Phylogenetic analyses of subfamily Proteoideae using sequence data from one nuclear and six plastid loci show that most of this ersity is contained in two distinct Cape floral clades. Molecular dating analyses, using Bayesian and penalized likelihood methods and four phylogenetically supported fossil age constraints, reveal contrasting histories for these two clades. The genus Protea belongs to a lineage that may have been in Africa since the Late Cretaceous but began to ersify in the Cape only 5-18 Myr ago. In contrast, the Leucadendrinae clade presumably arrived in the region no earlier than 46 Myr ago by long-distance dispersal from an Australian ancestor and the extant members of this clade began to ersify in the Cape 22-39 Myr ago. These results join a growing number of case studies that challenge the commonly accepted view that most of the Cape flora radiated synchronously in the Late Miocene and Early Pliocene when a Mediterranean climate settled in the region.

Dicroidium zuberi and D. crassinervis forma stelznerianum occur with Pteruchus dubius and support a Mid to Late Triassic age. A new species of conifer, Pagiophyllum papillatus , is recognized along with an undetermined conifer pollen cone.

Abstract: Taxonomic uncertainty exists regarding the circumscription of the following seven phenotypically similar Australian species: Poa crassicaudex Vickery, P. hookeri Vickery, P. labillardierei Steud., P. phillipsiana Vickery, P. poiformis (Labill.) Druce, P. porphyroclados Nees (including P. serpentum Nees) and P. sieberiana Spreng. Multivariate ordination and clustering analyses of morphological data were conducted and the distribution of morphological ersity among taxa was assessed for congruence with current taxonomic boundaries. One-way analyses of variance and Tukey’s honest significant difference tests were applied to identify continuous characters that differentiate taxa. Utility of morphological characters was assessed in light of the distribution of variation among and within taxa. Revisions of P. labillardierei, P. porphyroclados and P. sieberiana circumscriptions are proposed. Accounting for nomenclatural priority, proposed revisions include recognition of P. porphyroclados vars. acris, labillardierei, porphyroclados, and. serpentum, P. sieberiana var. cyanophylla Vickery at species rank, and P. phillipsiana at varietal rank within P. sieberiana. Species boundaries are supported by leaf, culm, panicle, spikelet and floret dimensions. The present study enables increased accuracy in taxonomic identifications for Poa species that are keystones in a range of grassland vegetation types, including critically endangered natural temperate grassland and eucalypt woody grassland ecosystems, therefore contributing to the effective bio ersity monitoring and management of these ecosystems.

Abstract: Coniferous foliage from the Albian of Alexander Island, Antarctica, is assigned to the Araucariaceae, Podocarpaceae, and Taxodiaceae based on attached or associated fertile remains. Araucarian foliage represented by Araucaria alexandrensis sp. nov. and A. chambersii sp. nov. is associated with ovulate cone scales described as Araucarites wollemiaformis sp. nov. and A. citadelbastionensis sp. nov., respectively. The Podocarpaceae is represented by Bellingshausium willeyii sp. nov. and the Taxodiaceae by Athrotaxites ungeri, both with attached cones. Sterile foliage is widespread belonging to the form genera Podozamites, Elatocladus, Brachyphyllum and Pagiophyllum. The conifers in this Albian southern high-latitude flora make up ca. 15% of the species ersity. Evidence from leaf litter distribution on palaeosols and leaf morphology suggest that the majority of conifers were large canopy-forming trees, although a few were probably small understorey shrubs.
Transfer of the New Caledonian genus Boronella to Boronia (Rutaceae) based on analyses of cpDNA and nrDNA

Abstract: As currently circumscribed, Boronia (Rutaceae) is a large Australian genus of 148 species distributed in all states and mainland territories, and Boronella is confined to New Caledonia and contains ~four species. We present molecular phylogenetic analyses of these genera, based on chloroplast (trnL–trnF) and nuclear (ITS, ETS) DNA sequences, to assess their relationships and infrageneric classification. Analyses strongly support the monophyly of a Boronia+Boronella clade and that Boronella is nested within Boronia. They also support the monophyly of Boronella and Boronia sections Algidae, Valvatae and Cyanothamnus, and ser. Pedunculatae (sect. Boronia), but resolve sect. Boronia and ser. Boronia as polyphyletic. On the basis of these results, we propose a new classification wherein Boronella is transferred to Boronia and recognised at the rank of section, and a new name and two new combinations in Boronia are provided for the following three species: Boronia hartleyi Duretto & Bayly, Boronia pancheri (Baill.) Duretto & Bayly and Boronia parvifolia (Baker f.) Duretto & Bayly. A revised circumscription is presented for Boronia sect. Boronia, and Pedunculatae is elevated from a series to a section. The relationships and classification of some taxa require further clarification, either because of limited taxon s ling, or because some nodes in phylogenetic analyses are poorly resolved or supported.

Abstract: Proteaceae subfamily Persoonioideae, as presently circumscribed, consists of the monogeneric tribe Placospermeae (Placospermum) and the tribe Persoonieae. The latter comprises the erse genus Persoonia and monospecific genera found in New Zealand (Toronia), New Caledonia (Garnieria) and south-western Western Australia (Acidonia). Persoonia has 101 species distributed across Australia and has been classified into 11 informal groups. Using data derived from plastid DNA (trnL–trnF region), nuclear rDNA (ITS) and morphological characters, we constructed a phylogeny of Persoonioideae and compared the results to the existing classification. Bayesian and parsimony analyses indicated that Persoonia, as currently defined, is non-monophyletic. The molecular data and combined molecular and morphological data place Toronia in a moderately well supported clade with the monophyletic Rufiflora group of Persoonia from Western Australia. This clade is sister to Acidonia, Garnieria and the remaining Persoonia species. Of the other informal groups in Persoonia, the Teretifolia, Quinquenervis, Laurina, Arborea, Graminea and Chapmaniana groups are supported as monophyletic. The Lanceolata group can be re-circumscribed to be monophyletic by the addition of P. elliptica R.Br. (Longifolia group) and the Dillwynioides group. Relationships within this large, geographically widespread clade are largely unresolved and low DNA-sequence variation within it suggests a recent radiation followed by isolation in south-western and eastern Australia. All endemic Tasmanian Persoonia (Gunnii group taxa) are unresolved at the second-most basal node of the Persoonieae. Our results suggest that the Rufiflora group should be treated as a new genus and that the infrageneric taxonomy of Persoonia requires minor amendment.

Abstract: This study presents a molecular phylogeny of Zieria Sm., a genus of shrubs and small trees, with 59 species in Australia and one endemic to New Caledonia. The phylogeny is based on four cpDNA markers and 116 s les representing all species of Zieria except one, and the monotypic outgroup Neobyrnesia suberosa. The New Caledonian species, Z. chevalieri, was resolved as sister to a well supported clade of all Australian taxa. There was widespread incongruence between the cpDNA tree and species-level taxonomy, with 14 species shown as polyphyletic or paraphyletic. These included widespread species (e.g. Z. smithii and Z. arborescens, each falling in at least four well supported clades) and some with narrow geographic ranges (e.g. Z. alata and Z. oreocena). No species represented by three or more s les was resolved as monophyletic. We suggest that a combination of factors explains this incongruence, including regional cpDNA introgression (chloroplast capture), incomplete lineage sorting and inappropriate taxonomic boundaries. The cpDNA phylogeny provides useful insight into the evolution of Zieria but, because of its complexity, does not provide a clear basis for assessing phylogenetic relationships and monophyly of taxa. Better understanding of relationships, taxon limits and evolutionary processes in Zieria will require comparisons with nuclear DNA markers and critical assessment of morphological and genetic variation in widespread species.

Abstract: Dating Jurassic terrestrial floras in the Antarctic Peninsula has proved problematic and controversial. Here U–Pb series dating on detrital zircons from a conglomerate interbedded with fossil plant material provide a maximal depositional age of 144 ± 3 Ma for a presumed Jurassic flora. This is the first confirmed latest Jurassic-earliest Cretaceous flora from the Latady Basin, and represents some of the youngest sedimentation in this basin. The presence of terrestrial sedimentation at Cantrill Nunataks suggests emergence of the arc closer to the Latady Basin margin in the south compared to Larsen Basin in the north, probably as a result of the failure of the southern Weddell Sea to undergo rifting.

Abstract: Dating the Tree of Life has now become central to relating patterns of bio ersity to key processes in Earth history such as plate tectonics and climate change. Regions with a Mediterranean climate have long been noted for their exceptional species richness and high endemism. How and when these biota assembled can only be answered with a good understanding of the sequence of ergence times for each of their components. A critical aspect of dating by using molecular sequence ergence is the incorporation of multiple suitable age constraints. Here, we show that only rigorous phylogenetic analysis of fossil taxa can lead to solid calibration and, in turn, stable age estimates, regardless of which of 3 relaxed clock-dating methods is used. We find that Proteaceae, a model plant group for the Mediterranean hotspots of the Southern Hemisphere with a very rich pollen fossil record, ersified under higher rates in the Cape Floristic Region and Southwest Australia than in any other area of their total distribution. Our results highlight key differences between Mediterranean hotspots and indicate that Southwest Australian biota are the most phylogenetically erse but include numerous lineages with low ersification rates.

Abstract: Although the Australasian grass genus Austrostipa is species rich, abundant and ecologically significant, the subgeneric classification of its 62 species has not been comprehensively tested with molecular data. We used three molecular markers from 51 species to determine a phylogeny of the genus and found strong support for the following seven of the existing subgenera: Falcatae, Austrostipa, Aulax, Lobatae, Bambusina, Lancea and Longiaristatae. The molecular data do not support Tuberculatae and Eremophilae, which could be combined with subgenus Austrostipa. The data are equivocal or insufficient regarding monophyly of Ceres, Arbuscula, Petaurista and Lanterna. Data from the nuclear internal transcribed spacer region appear to be suitable for phylogenetic analysis of this group, and the degree of sequence variability resolves species-level relationships with good levels of support. In contrast, chloroplast sequence data from the matK and rbcL genes do not resolve most relationships at the species level, and the inferred phylogeny hints at gene duplication, chloroplast capture, or deep coalescence in the evolutionary history of Austrostipa.
A new stratigraphy for the Latady Basin, Antarctic Peninsula: Part 2, Latady Group and basin evolution

Abstract: Recent detailed mapping, section logging and an improved understanding of the geological evolution of the Antarctic Peninsula provide a robust framework for an improved lithostratigraphic sub ision of the Latady Basin, eastern Ellsworth Land. Within the Latady Basin we recognize two main groups: Ellsworth Land Volcanic Group and Latady Group. The focus of this paper is the Latady Group, which is formally sub ided into five formations: Anderson Formation, Witte Formation, Hauberg Mountains Formation, Cape Zumberge Formation and Nordsim Formation. Middle Jurassic, shallow marine deposits of the Anderson Formation are overlain by quiet anoxic deposits assigned to the Witte Formation. The start of the Late Jurassic is marked by the deposition of higher energy deposits of the Hauberg Mountains Formation, sub ided into three members (Long Ridge, Mount Hirman and Novocin members) that reflect varying lithological and environmental characteristics. Thermal subsidence during the latest Jurassic led to deposition of the basinal Cape Zumberge Formation, while uplift of an active continental arc along the Antarctic Peninsula led to deposition of the terrestrial Nordsim Formation in the latest Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous. The evolution of the Latady Basin reflects early extension during Gondwana break-up, from the Early Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous, and is consistent with a shift in the underlying forces driving extension in the Weddell Sea area from intracontinental rifting related to a mantle plume, to active margin forces in response to subduction.

Abstract: The Cretaceous Fossil Bluff Group on Alexander Island, on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula, contains a remarkably complete record of the evolution of a forearc basin. The latest (Aptian–Albian) stages in the basin history are recorded in a well-exposed succession at the southern end of the island, where a series of nunataks provide exposure of over a thousand metres of shallow marine and continental deposits. An abrupt facies shift from upper shoreface marine facies to braided fluvial deposits is interpreted as the record of regional uplift in the volcanic arc. This event coincides with the Palmer Land deformation event which may be related to a mid-Cretaceous mantle plume. A gradual reduction in depositional gradient and a return to shallow marine conditions towards the top of the exposed section is interpreted as a consequence of erosion of the arc and subsidence within the basin. Palaeocurrent data and facies distributions indicate that the continental deposits formed a fan-shaped wedge at least 30 km in diameter in the southern part of the forearc basin. Fossil plants indicate that the palaeoclimate was warm and humid throughout the period of deposition. Mapping and facies analysis of the upper part of the Fossil Bluff Group in southern Alexander Island has resulted in a revision of the stratigraphic terminology for the area. The Triton Point Member, formerly part of the Neptune Glacier Formation, has been raised to formation status and two members (the Citadel Bastion Member and the Coal Nunatak Member) and a Bed (the Upper Coal Nunatak Sandstone Bed) are defined here within the formation.

Abstract: This study presents a phylogeny of Zieria Sm. (Rutaceae) based on sequences of internal transcribed spacer and external transcribed spacer regions of nrDNA, and using Neobyrnesia suberosa J.A.Armstr. as the outgroup. The phylogeny includes 109 s les, representing 58 of the 60 currently recognised species of Zieria, with multiple accessions of most. Ten species were resolved as monophyletic on the basis of two, or in one case four, s les. Monophyly of four species was neither supported nor rejected, and all other species with more than one accession were resolved as polyphyletic or paraphyletic. Results showed that ergent paralogues of nrDNA are present in some in iduals, although the underlying evolutionary process that gave rise to those paralogues is uncertain. Divergent paralogues within genomes could predate speciation and be variably retained or variably detected within the species s led here alternatively, they could represent novel nrDNA combinations formed through hybridisation after speciation. There was no strong evidence for recombination between paralogues or that paralogues represent pseudogenes. Variation of nrDNA sequences was clearly incongruent with previously published cpDNA variation, with the nrDNA potentially providing a better indication of species relationships in Zieria. Evidence for this comes from the greater level of congruence, in some species at least, between nrDNA and existing species-level taxonomy than between cpDNA and taxonomy. Incomplete lineage sorting is proposed as a plausible cause for much of the conflict between nrDNA and cpDNA in Zieria, although, in most cases, there was insufficient information to identify the underlying causes with confidence. Implications for species-level taxonomy are discussed.

Abstract: The Jurassic Mount Poster Formation of eastern Ellsworth Land, southern Antarctic Peninsula, comprises silicic ignimbrites related to intracontinental rifting of Gondwana. The identification of less voluminous basaltic and sedimentary facies marginal to the silicic deposits has led to a reclassification of the volcanic units into the Ellsworth Land Volcanic Group. This is formally sub ided into two formations: the Mount Poster Formation (silicic ignimbrites), and the Sweeney Formation (basaltic and sedimentary facies). The Mount Poster Formation rhyolites are an intracaldera sequence greater than 1 km in thickness. The basaltic and sedimentary facies of the Sweeney Formation are consistent with deposition in a terrestrial setting into, or close to, water. The geochemistry of the Mount Poster Formation is consistent with derivation of the intracaldera rhyolites from a long-lived, upper crustal magma chamber. The basalts of the Sweeney Formation are intermediate between asthenosphere- and lithosphere-derived magmas, with little or no subduction-modified component. The basalt could represent a rare erupted part of the basaltic underplate that acted as the heat source for local generation of the rhyolites. U–Pb ion microprobe zircon geochronology of s les from the Mount Poster Formation yield an average eruption age of 183.4±1.4 Ma. Analysis of detrital zircons from a Sweeney Formation sandstone suggest a maximum age of deposition of 183±4 Ma and the two formations are considered coeval. In addition, these ages are coincident with eruption of the Karoo-Ferrar Igneous Province in southern Africa and East Antarctica. Our interpretation of the Ellsworth Land Volcanic Group is consistent with the model that the Jurassic volcanism of Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula took place in response to intracontinental extension driven by arrival of a plume in that area.

Abstract: Fossil angiosperm wood from Upper Cretaceous sediments of Livingston Island and James Ross Island in the northern Antarctic Peninsula region is identified as having the combination of anatomical characters most similar to modern Cunoniaceae. The material is characterised by predominantly solitary vessels, opposite to scalariform intervessel pitting, scalariform perforation plates, heterocellular multiseriate and homocellular uniseriate rays, diffuse axial parenchyma. Anatomically, the specimens conform most closely to the fossil organ genus Weinmannioxylon Petriella which has been placed within the Cunoniaceae. The presence of Weinmannioxylon in Late Cretaceous sediments suggests that taxa within or stem taxa to the Cunoniaceae might have been a notable component of the forest vegetation that covered the Antarctic Peninsula during the Late Mesozoic and may therefore represent the earliest record of this family.

Abstract: To infer relationships between populations of the semi‐arid, mallee eucalypt, Eucalyptus behriana , to build hypotheses regarding evolution of major disjunctions in the species' distribution and to expand understanding of the biogeographical history of southeastern Australia. Southeastern Australia. Eucalyptus behriana (Myrtaceae, Angiospermae). We developed a large dataset of anonymous genomic loci for 97 s les from 11 populations of E. behriana using double digest restriction site‐associated DNA sequencing (ddRAD‐seq), to determine genetic relationships between the populations. These relationships, along with species distribution models, were used to construct hypotheses regarding environmental processes that have driven fragmentation of the species’ distribution. Greatest genetic ergence was between populations on either side of the Lower Murray Basin. Populations west of the Basin showed greater genetic ergence between one another than the eastern populations. The most genetically distinct population in the east (Long Forest) was separated from others by the Great Dividing Range. A close relationship was found between the outlying northernmost population (near West Wyalong) and those in the Victorian Goldfields despite a large disjunction between them. Patterns of genetic variation are consistent with a history of vicariant differentiation of disjunct populations. We infer that an early disjunction to develop in the species distribution was that across the Lower Murray Basin, an important biogeographical barrier separating many dry sclerophyll plant taxa in southeastern Australia. Additionally, our results suggest that the western populations fragmented earlier than the eastern ones. Fragmentation, both west and east of the Murray Basin, is likely tied to climatic changes associated with glacial‐interglacial cycles although it remains possible that major geological events including uplift of the Mount Lofty Ranges and basalt flows in the Newer Volcanics Province also played a role.

Abstract: Silicified conifer woods are very common in the mid-Cretaceous (Late Albian, 100Ma) Triton Point Member of the Neptune Glacier Formation (Fossil Bluff Group), SE Alexander Island, Antarctica. These occur as up to 7m high in situ tree trunks and stumps rooted in carbonaceous palaeosols and as allochthonous logs and wood fragments in fluvial channel and sheet sandstone facies. Sixty-eight wood s les were examined in this study and were classified in terms of five form taxa using a quantitative approach. Araucarioxylon (1.5% of specimens) is characterised by dominantly multiseriate, alternately arranged bordered pitting on radial tracheid walls and by 1-4 araucarioid cross-field pitting. Araucariopitys (11.8% of specimens) is characterised by dominantly uniseriate tracheid pitting with subordinate biseriate, alternate tracheid pitting and by 1-4 araucarioid cross-field pitting. Podocarpoxylon sp. 1 (63.1% of specimens) is characterised by contiguous, uniseriate tracheid pitting and 1-2 podocarpoid cross-field pits. Podocarpoxylon sp. 2 (22.1% of specimens) is similar to P. sp. 1, differing only in that ray height is lower, tracheid pits are dominantly spaced more than one pit diameter apart and abundant axial parenchyma is present. These first four taxa all possess growth rings with subtle boundaries. Taxodioxylon (1.5% of specimens) is characterised by 1-2 seriate, oppositely arranged, bordered tracheid pitting, 1-2 taxodioid cross-field pitting and very marked ring boundaries. These woods were derived from large trees with basal stump diameters of up to 0.5m and probable heights of up to 29m. Data from leaf traces suggest that Araucariopitys and Podocarpoxylon sp. 1 and sp. 2 (97% of specimens) were evergreen with leaf retention times of >5years. These predominantly evergreen conifer forests grew in a mild, high latitude (75 degrees S) environment during the mid-Cretaceous greenhouse climate phase.

Abstract: A macroflora from John Peaks, Powell Island, contains Sagenopteris nilssoniana, Cladophlebis oblonga, Brachyphyllum sp., Elatocladus confertus , and Sphenopteris sp. The macroflora is best correlated with the Botany Bay Group flora, suggesting an Early to Middle Jurassic age for the Powell Island Conglomerate. This age supports new interpretations for the geological evolution of the Antarctic Peninsula that suggest the initial phase of Gondwana break-up was manifested as small rift grabens with continental deposits.

Molecular phylogenetics provides new insights into the systematics of Pimelea and Thecanthes (Thymelaeaceae)

Abstract: Pimelea Banks & Sol. ex Gaertn. is a genus of flowering plants comprising an estimated 90 species in Australia and ~35 species in New Zealand. The genus is economically important, with the inflorescences of some species having floricultural applications, and the presence of toxic compounds in several species proving poisonous to livestock. Pimelea grows in a variety of habitats ranging from arid to alpine, suggesting a complicated biogeographic history. The relationships within Pimelea remain largely uncertain, despite previous attempts at clarification using molecular phylogenetics. However, it is clear that Pimelea is closely related to Thecanthes Wikstr., with the two genera comprising the subtribe Pimeleinae. We used Bayesian and maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analyses of four plastid markers (matK, rbcL, rps16, trnL–F) and one nuclear ribosomal marker (ITS) to examine the evolutionary relationships within Pimeleinae. We found strong support for the monophyly of Pimeleinae but, similar to previous studies, Pimelea was paraphyletic with respect to Thecanthes. Our results also indicated that P. longiflora R.Br. subsp. longiflora and P. longiflora subsp. eyrei (F.Muell.) Rye are best considered as distinct species. Therefore, we reduce Thecanthes to synonymy with Pimelea, making the necessary new combination Pimelea filifolia (Rye) C.S.P.Foster et M.J.Henwood (previously Thecanthes filifolia Rye), and also reinstate Pimelea eyrei F.Muell.
