Integrating andragogical philosophy with Indigenous teaching and learning

Abstract: Recent Australian research has identified that the success of an Indigenous business greatly relies on the business acumen of its owner. Whilst business education offered through Business Schools is seemingly open to all, Indigenous Australian participation in these educational offerings have been low. In contrast the number of Indigenous businesses emerging in Australia over the past decade is building a demand for Indigenous specific business education offerings. The MURRA Indigenous Business Master Class at Melbourne Business School is such an ex le of an Indigenous business education program. We discuss how this program implements an andragogical philosophy into the Indigenous teaching and learning approach of business education to take into consideration an in idual’s cultural and business knowledge to contextualise business learning. This paper identifies a framework of andragogy principles that contributes to the learning environment for Indigenous entrepreneurs. We identify four key learning principles and offer an evidence based model to progress business education. Through well designed Indigenous business education, business education can provide Indigenous entrepreneurs with an effective learning environment that integrates their cultural identity, highlights Indigenous knowledges and allows for the development of skills to support self-determination practices.

Surfacing assumptions via ‘metaxic’ method: an arts-based method for team fieldwork

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present an arts-based method for collaborative research underpinned by the performative turn in ethnography (Denzin, 2003). The article presents the ‘metaxic method’, building on the term metaxis invented by Boal (1995) whereby in iduals feel ‘belonging completely and simultaneously to two different, autonomous worlds’ (1995: 43). Before bringing participants into a research engagement using the metaxic method there is preparation work for the research team to do. We present a process derived from Augusto Boal’s ‘Cop in the Head’ theatre game where the ‘play’ is periodically interrupted to seek insight and critical reflection. This research team preparation process is performative and playful, using role to bring alive the frame of performative research in pursuit of surfacing epistemological assumptions. In doing so, researchers have had a prequalitative fieldwork opportunity to experience difference together. It is at this point that the metaxic method can be introduced. This experience is a critical mirroring of theoretical olitical commitments and an opportunity, through having a partial experience of ‘other’ to consider the potential collective and community dimensions possible through research.

What silence can teach us about race and leadership

Abstract: Silence is laden when it comes to race and leadership. We believe it is critical to reclaim the kind of silence that supports conscious transformation. Our contribution in this endeavor is twofold. Firstly, we distinguish between fear-based silence and sacred silence. Fear-based silence can be a running away from discomfort, a covering up of trepidation and anxiety. It can lead to collective amnesia and willful ignorance, a hoarding of status, privilege, and power, and forge deep ides between people. This is the world of masks and performativity, and at its worst harbors prejudice, hate, and destruction. Leadership tolerant of fear-based silence permits a festering of racism. Sacred silence by contrast heals and raises consciousness. For the kind of leadership required to consistently and indefatigably push for change and disruption to racism, we need a practice of sacred silence. Sacred silence cultivates the courage to look fearlessly within personal shadows and bravely at what is required to make the world a safe, secure, and just place for all. Secondly, we present four themes that emerged from our reflexive inquiry into race, leadership, and silence: listening dialogue, returning to Mother Earth wisdom, honoring potential, and practicing mindfulness in a context of collective wisdom.

The dialectics of leadership identity construction: Case studies from Indigenous women leaders

Abstract: Challenging oversimplified models, the leader identity literature calls for new perspectives of leadership identity construction (LIC). Using a collective leadership lens and narrative methods, this collaborative study explores how Indigenous women’s leadership identities develop within a contest for power and voice. Observations, interviews, and micro-ethnographies helped identify how history, community dynamics and cultural contradictions influence LIC. We find the LIC process to unfold as a dialectical spiral, informed by contradictions experienced when enacting social identities in various spheres of influence. This highlights the intersectionality of salient identities when theorizing LIC, and suggests that minoritized leaders can resignify and ultimately, capitalize on their multiple identities to strengthen their leadership.
