Nanoscale differentiation of surfaces and cores for olivine phosphate particles—a key characteristic of practical battery materials

Abstract: We provide a review of our recent studies on the surface chemistries and electronic structures of olivine phosphate cathode materials LiMPO 4 (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni). Li-depletion and mixed oxidation for the transition metal ions have been detected on particle surfaces, across the family of metal phosphate cathode materials. The effects of surface Li-depletion on optical properties and electronic band structures are discussed. LiFePO 4 doped with metals or ions that are reported in the literature as beneficial for rate capability enhancement show more pronounced surface Li-depletion and mixed oxidation compared to undoped material. This outcome, among others, indicates that the dopant resides predominantly on, and influences, the surface of cathode materials.

Abstract: Distinctive Cr-MOF@Da composites have been constructed using chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and diatomite (Da). The new materials have hierarchical pore structures containing micropores, mesopores and macropores. We have synthesized various morphologies of the MOF compound Cr-MIL-101 to combine with Da in a one-pot reaction step. These distinctive hierarchical pore networks within Cr-MIL-101@Da enable exceptional adsorptive performance for a range of molecules, including hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) vapor. Selectivity for H2 or CO2 can be moderated by the morphology and composition of the Cr-MIL-101 included in the Cr-MOF@Da composite. The encapsulation and growth of Cr-MIL-101 within and on Da have resulted in excellent water retention as well as high thermal and hydrolytic stability. In some cases, Cr-MIL-101@Da composite materials have demonstrated increased thermal stability compared with that of Cr-MIL-101 for ex le, decomposition temperatures ℃ can be achieved. Furthermore, these Cr-MIL-101@Da composites retain structural and morphological integrity after 60 cycles of repeated hydration/dehydration, and after storage for more than one year. These characteristics are difficult to achieve with many MOF materials, and thus suggest that MOF–mineral composites show high potential for practical gas storage and water vapor capture.

Abstract: Precise compositional analyses at spatial resolution μ m, combined with structure determination using bulk (i.e. powder XRD) and in idual grain (i.e. EBSD) techniques, show that both β-Fe x Se and δ-Fe x Se form as solids in a two-phase field above and below the apparent peritectic temperature of 457 °C. Microstructures show that β-Fe x Se and δ-Fe x Se form together via exsolution when cooled from this two-phase field evident when annealing time and temperature are optimised. Using a facile one-pot method with elemental Fe:Se reactant ratios ranging from 0.95 to 1.14, β-Fe x Se occurs as the predominant phase in association with hexagonal δ-Fe x Se in the temperature range 330 °C T max 750 °C, where T max is the sintering temperature. Maximum yield of β-Fe x Se occurs after sintering at T max 690 °C with annealing at 420 °C for ∼24 h. We define a modified phase diagram that includes this two phase field with β-Fe x Se and δ-Fe x Se for 1.02 x 0.90 and a second two phase field with β-Fe x Se and α-Fe for 1.08 x 1.02. This revised phase diagram for Fe:Se ∼ 1.0 suggests that the peretectic transition nominally identified at x = 1.04 is not evident.

Abstract: Measurements of the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and Hall mobility from -300 K to -1300 K have been carried out on multiphase hotpressed s les of the nominal composition B 6 Si. In all s les the conductivity and the p-type Seebeck coefficient both increase smoothly with increasing temperature. By themselves, these facts suggest small-polaronic hopping between inequivalent sites. The measured Hall mobilities are always low, but vary in sign. A possible explanation is offered for this anomalous behavior.

Abstract: Crystalline Ni2B, Ni3B, and Ni4B3 are synthesized by a single-step method using autogenous pressure from the reaction of NaBH4 and Ni precursors. The effect of reaction temperature, pressure, time, and starting materials on the composition of synthesized products, particle morphologies, and magnetic properties is demonstrated. High yields of Ni2B ( %) are achieved at 2.3–3.4 MPa and ~670 °C over five hours. Crystalline Ni3B or Ni4B3 form in conjunction with Ni2B at higher temperature or higher autogenous pressure in proportions influenced by the ratios of initial reactants. For the same starting ratios of reactants, a longer reaction time or higher pressure shifts equilibria to lower yields of Ni2B. Using this approach, yields of ~88% Ni4B3 (single phase orthorhombic) and ~72% Ni3B are obtained for conditions 1.9 MPa Pmax 4.9 MPa and 670 °C Tmax 725 °C. Gas-solid reaction is the dominant transformation mechanism that results in formation of Ni2B at lower temperatures than conventional solid-state methods.

Synthesis of Magnesium Nickel Boride Aggregates via Borohydride Autogenous Pressure

Abstract: We demonstrate synthesis of the ternary intermetallic MgNi3B2 using autogenous pressure from the reaction of NaBH4 with Mg and Ni metal powder. The decomposition of NaBH4 to H2 and B2H6 commences at low temperatures in the presence of Mg and/or Ni and promotes formation of Ni-borides and MgNi3B2 with the increase in temperature. MgNi3B2 aggregates with Ni-boride cores are formed when the reaction temperature is °C and autogenous pressure is .7 MPa. Morphologies and microstructures suggest that solid–gas and liquid–gas reactions are dominant mechanisms and that Ni-borides form at a lower temperature than MgNi3B2. Magnetic measurements of the core-shell MgNi3B2 aggregates are consistent with ferromagnetic behaviour in contrast to stoichiometric MgNi3B2 which is diamagnetic at room temperature.

Abstract: Zeolite N is a synthetic zeolite of the EDI framework family from the more than 200 known zeolite types. Previous experimental laboratory and field data show that zeolite N has a high capacity for exchange of ions. Computational modelling and simulation techniques are effective tools that help explain the atomic-scale behaviour of zeolites under different processing conditions and allow comparison with experiment. In this study, the ion exchange behaviour of synthetic zeolite N in an aqueous environment is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The exchange mechanism of K+ extra-framework cations with alkaline and alkaline-earth cations NH4+, Li+, Na+, Rb+, Cs+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ is explored in different crystallographic directions inside the zeolite N structure. Moreover, the effect of different framework partial charges on MD simulation results obtained from different DFT calculations are examined. The results show that the diffusion and exchange of cations in zeolite N are affected by shape and size of channels controlling the ion exchange flow as well as the nature of cation, ionic size and charge density.

Abstract: The microstructure of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ (YBCO) materials, melt-textured in air and quenched from the temperature range 900– °C, has been characterized using a combination of x-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry. BaCu 2 O 2 and BaCuO 2 were found to coexist in s les quenched from the temperature range 920–960 °C. The formation of BaCu 2 O 2 preceded the formation of YBCO. Once the YBCO had formed, BaCu 2 O 2 was present at the solidification front filling the space between nearly parallel platelets of YBCO. Large Y 2 BaCuO 2 particles at the solidification front appeared ided into smaller ones as a result of their dissolution in the liquid that quenched as BaCu 2 O 2 .

Abstract: We present three systematic approaches to use of Density Functional Theory (DFT) for interpretation and prediction of superconductivity in new or existing materials. These approaches do not require estimates of free parameters but utilize standard input values that significantly influence computational resolution of reciprocal space Fermi surfaces and that reduce the meV-scale energy variability of calculated values. Systematic calculations on conventional superconductors show that to attain a level of resolution comparable to the energy gap, two key parameters, Δk and the cut-off energy, must be optimized for a specific compound. The optimal level of resolution is achieved with k-grids smaller than the minimum reciprocal space separation between key parallel Fermi surfaces. These approaches enable estimates of superconducting properties including the transition temperature (Tc) via (i) measurement of the equivalent thermal energy of a phonon anomaly (if present), (ii) the distribution of electrons and effect on Fermi energy (EF) when subjected to a deformation potential and (iii) use of parabolic, or higher order quartic, approximations for key electronic bands implicated in electron–phonon interactions. We demonstrate these approaches for the conventional superconductors MgB2, metal substituted MgB2 and boron-doped diamond.

Abstract: Detailed analytical electron microscope (AEM) studies of yellow whiskers produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) 1 show that two basic types of whiskers are produced at low temperatures (between 1200°C and 1400°C) and low boron to carbon gas ratios. Both whisker types show planar microstructures such as twin planes and stacking faults oriented parallel to, or at a rhombohedral angle to, the growth direction. For both whisker types, the presence of droplet-like terminations containing both Si and Ni indicate that the growth process during CVD is via a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism.
Anomalous Seebeck coefficient in boron carbides

Abstract: Boron carbides exhibit an anomalously large Seebeck coefficient with a temperature coefficient that is characteristic of polaronic hopping between inequivalent sites. The inequivalence in the sites is associated with disorder in the solid. The temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient for materials prepared by different techniques provides insight into the nature of the disorder.

Abstract: Raman and synchrotron THz absorption spectral measurements on MgB2 provide experimental evidence for electron orbital superlattices. In earlier work, we have detected THz spectra that show superlattice absorption peaks with low wavenumbers, for which spectral density evolves and intensifies after cooling below the superconducting transition temperature for MgB2. In this work, we show how these observations indicate a direct connection to superconducting properties and mechanisms. Bonding–antibonding orbital character is identified in calculated electronic band structures and Fermi surfaces consistent with superlattice structures along the c-axis. DFT calculations show that superlattice folding of reciprocal space generates Brillouin zone boundary reflections, Umklapp processes, and substantially enhances nesting relationships. Tight binding equations are compared with expected charge density waves from nesting relationships and adjusted to explicitly accommodate these linked processes. Systematic analysis of electronic band structures and Fermi surfaces allows for direct identification of Cooper pairing and the superconducting gap, particularly when the k-grid resolution of a calculation is suitably calibrated to structural parameters. Thus, we detail a robust and accurate DFT re-interpretation of BCS superconductivity for MgB2.
A comparison of calculated and experimental HRTEM images of twinned boron carbide

Abstract: High resolution TEM images of boron carbide (B 13 C 2 ) have been recorded and compared with images calculated using the multislice method as implemented by M. A. O'Keefe in the SHRLI programs. Images calculated for the [010] zone, using machine parameters for the JEOL 2000FX AEM operating at 200 keV, indicate that for the structure model of Will et al. , the optimum defocus image can be interpreted such that white spots correspond to B 12 icosahedra for thin specimens and to low density channels through the structure adjacent to the direct inter-icosahedral bonds for specimens of intermediate thickness (-40 t -100 nm). With this information, and from the symmetry observed in the TEM images, it is likely that the (101) twin plane passes through the center of icosahedron located at the origin. This model was tested using the method of periodic continuation. Resulting images compare favorably with experimental images, thus supporting the structural model. The introduction of a (101) twin plane through the origin creates distortions to the icosahedral linkages as well as to the intra-icosahedral bonding. This increases the inequivalence of adjacent icosahedral sites along the twin plane, and thereby increases the likelihood of bipolaron hopping.

Imaging fluid solid interactions in hydrocarbon reservoir rocks

Abstract: The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) has been used to image liquid hydrocarbons in sandstones and oil shales. Additionally, the fluid sensitivity of selected clay minerals in hydrocarbon reservoirs was assessed via three case studies: HCl acid sensitivity of authigenic chlorite in sandstone reservoirs, freshwater sensitivity of authigenic illite/smectite in sandstone reservoirs, and bleach sensitivity of a volcanic reservoir containing abundant secondary chlorite/corrensite. The results showed the suitability of using ESEM for imaging liquid hydrocarbon films in hydrocarbon reservoirs and the importance of simulating in situ fluid‐rock interactions for hydrocarbon production programmes. In each case, results of the ESEM studies greatly enhanced prediction of reservoir/borehole reactions and, in some cases, contradicted conventional wisdom regarding the outcome of potential engineering solutions. © 1993 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
