Abstract: We review a body of literature that addresses the incomes of visual artists and their participation in the labour market. It is clear that the level and composition of visual artists’ incomes varies widely, as does their engagement in different forms of employment. The lack of a consistent definition of an artist and a lack of consistency in income sources included in current data collection presents challenges for researchers. The focus of our research is on the economic status of visual artists in Australia, and we identify a number of considerations that might inform policy responses to their financial position.

Ambivalent entrepreneurs: arts-based social enterprise in a neoliberal world

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to consider the social turn in contemporary capitalism and contemporary art through the lens of art-based social enterprises (ASEs) that aim to create positive social benefits for young people experiencing forms of marginalisation, and which trade creative products or services to help fulfil that mission. A growth in ASEs demonstrates a growing interest in how the arts can support social and economic development, and the ways new economic models can generate employment for in iduals excluded from the labour market extend opportunities for more people to participate in art markets and challenge dominant market models of cultural production and consumption. This paper considers a number of challenges and complexities faced by ASEs that embrace a co-dependence of three goals, which are often in tension and competition – artistic practice, social purpose and economic activity. It does so by analysing interviews from staff working with 12 ASE organisation’s across Australia. While the external forces that shape ASEs – including government policy, markets, investors and philanthropy – are interested in the “self-sufficient” economic potential of ASEs, those working in ASEs tend to prioritise social values and ethical business over large financial returns and are often ambivalent about their roles as entrepreneurs. This ambivalence is symptomatic of a position that is simultaneously critical and affirmative, of the conditions of contemporary capitalism and neoliberalism. This paper addresses a gap in social enterprise literature presenting empirical research focussing on the lived experience of those managing and leading ASEs in Australia.

Subtypes of familial breast tumours revealed by expression and copy number profiling

Abstract: Extensive expression profiling studies have shown that sporadic breast cancer is composed of five clinically relevant molecular subtypes. However, although BRCA1-related tumours are known to be predominantly basal-like, there are few published data on other classes of familial breast tumours. We analysed a cohort of 75 BRCA1, BRCA2 and non-BRCA1/2 breast tumours by gene expression profiling and found that 74% BRCA1 tumours were basal-like, 73% of BRCA2 tumours were luminal A or B, and 52% non-BRCA1/2 tumours were luminal A. Thirty-four tumours were also analysed by single nucleotide polymorphism-comparative genomic hybridization (SNP-CGH) arrays. Copy number data could predict whether a tumour was basal-like or luminal with high accuracy, but could not predict its mutation class. Basal-like BRCA1 and basal-like non-BRCA1 tumours were very similar, and contained the highest number of chromosome aberrations. We identified regions of frequent gain containing potential driver genes in the basal (8q and 12p) and luminal A tumours (1q and 17q). Regions of homozygous loss associated with decreased expression of potential tumour suppressor genes were also detected, including in basal tumours (5q and 9p), and basal and luminal tumours (10q). This study highlights the heterogeneity of familial tumours and the clinical consequences for treatment and prognosis.

‘Art is different’: Material practice, learning and co-making at The Social Studio

Abstract: This article examines the relationship between traditional and creative research methods through the case study of The Social Studio (TSS), an art-based social enterprise in Melbourne, Australia. TSS aims to address systemic barriers to employment and education for people from refugee and migrant backgrounds through training and work experience in fashion and textiles. Specifically, the article reflects on the embodied, co-making learning space and model of TSS which addresses some of the barriers faced by migrant and refugee students in accessing formal education. Our research brings together traditional research methods, such as interviews and observation, as well as a creative workshop where both research subjects and researchers were taught a weaving activity. The article reflects critically on the limitations of traditional research methods, the challenges of researching in creative community contexts and also the need to document and analyse how material and embodied experiences impact on social and community development.

A collaborative design model to support hybrid learning environments during COVID19

Abstract: COVID-19 has catalyzed online learning environment design across all university disciplines, including the traditionally practice-based disciplines. As we move from a rapid response triage mode of online learning towards a more sustained engagement with a mix of online and face-to- face learning environments (particularly for practice-based learning) we face some unique challenges. This concise paper explores an ex le of collaborative co-creation and co-design of a resource guide as a response to the challenges of COVID-19 for best practices for designing hybrid learning environments to facilitate distributed learning environments (face-to-face and remote students). The co-creative co-design of the resource guide highlights some of the identified key design principles behind facilitating distributed learning communities.

Novel germlineCDH1mutations in hereditary diffuse gastric cancer families

Abstract: Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) is a recently defined cancer syndrome caused by inactivating, heterozygous germline mutations in the gene for the cell-to-cell adhesion protein E-cadherin (CDH1). Here, we describe the search for CDH1 mutations in 10 newly identified gastric cancer families. Seven of 10 families met the clinical criteria for HDGC. Germline mutations were identified in four of these seven families and one family that was borderline for the clinical criteria. Of the mutations identified in the five new families, four were previously unreported and consisted of two frameshift and two donor splice site mutations. One splice site mutation occurred at the 100% conserved +1 position. The second splice site mutation occurred at the +5 position and was shown to lead to abnormal splicing. Additional CDH1 variants detected include the heterozygous -160 C-->A promoter polymorphism, which has previously been reported to be associated with decreased CDH1 transcription. We, however, found this polymorphism to be common in a control population, suggesting that a major role for this polymorphism in gastric cancer susceptibility is unlikely.

Who is afraid of public space? Public art in a contested, secured and surveilled city

Abstract: In the wake of multiple global crises, fears of terrorism, rising nationalistic sentiments globally and the pervasive impacts of gender-based violence in public spaces, contemporary urban cities are permeated with surveillance, anxiety, fear and ision. In this context, what role can (and should) public art be playing? This article explores this question in the context of Melbourne, a major metropolitan centre in Australia, which has been ruptured by the multiplying effects of highly publicized episodes of street violence, isolated terrorist attacks, high-profile murders and politically driven narratives about youth gangs. Looking at the work of female artists Maryann Talia Pau, Amy Spiers and Catherine Ryan, and artists from African Australian communities including Ez Deng, Atong Atem and Asia Hassan, the article addresses questions about agency and marginalization for artists working in public space, and considers how marginalized community groups may face barriers to creating artworks that engage directly in mainstream public spaces.
